I swear, I feel like I’m such a random fangirl when it comes to my interests, especially since COVID started.

I’ve been rewatching Elementary and have fallen ass of tea kettle into those old feels, to the point where I’m very tempted to write fanfic for it.

The plot bunny that’s been growing in my head is the idea of an AU where Joan came to Sherlock not as a sober companion but as an Irregular. I feel like the show is so amazing with its progression of their platonic relationship, I wouldn’t want to miss that up by trying to rework canon for a more romantic angle.

I’m not disappointed that they didn’t have a romance. Again, I adore where they ended up and how they got there. That’s why there’s fanfiction: to explore other possibilities. Plus I’ve been researching other characters in the Sherlock Holmes canon, and one person in particular, Alec MacDonald, has jumped out at me as a potential starting point. I’ve already reworked him to be an inspector/mentor for Sherlock, maybe even worked on his mother’s case, which is how they met. I also love the idea of him being queer and in a relationship with Alastair. (Perhaps Sherlock even introduced them?) I have this scene brewing in my head of Sherlock showing up on their doorstep in NYC not unlike the story Alistair told Joan in 1x06 and this prompting the pair to contact Morland. Perhaps even staging an intervention with Morland’s (financial) support. (I loathe that man, regardless of how the show tried to tidy up their relationship. He doesn’t get off that easy with me.)

With Joan, I’d really like to explore her as being a former member of the military, possibly with her own struggles with addiction. Perhaps she and Sherlock could have an encounter at a meeting that she leads? Somehow they end up working a case together, and he has adds her to his little network. I love the idea of Sherlock keeping in contact with Alec and Alistair and constantly bringing up “this Irregular” he’s found to be quite useful as of late. The gay papas find this very encouraging but given what they know about Irene, they try not to push anything too hard, so as not to spook Sherlock.

I don’t know, it just sounds like a fun idea. It’s all very random, much like my re-entering a fandom after a show has ended. 😅

I’ll defo post if anything comes of this. I’ve been trying to get back into writing for pleasure on a more regular basis, this might be just the ticket!
