Jean Dessès | 1953⠀ ———⠀ Jean Dessès began his fashion career designing for a small couture house, Maison Jane, in 1925, where he was hired on the strength of his original design drawings. He opened his own maison de couture in 1937 but received his greatest recognition following World War II, having successfully built an international clientele. Dessès gained a particular reputation for evening gowns of intricately pleated and gracefully draped sheer silks, which became signature features of his collections beginning in the late 1940s. These fabrics, whose fragile nature necessitates expert handling, offered a pliancy that allowed Dessès to create endless variations of form, drawing inspiration from a range of historical sources. Here, the influence of 1860s ball gowns is revealed in the dress’s grand proportions and swagged drapery. Although Dessès captured the expressive opulence of the era of haute couture’s birth, he modernized and softened the nineteenth-century paradigm with his fluid draping and airy textiles. pics i took in the “in pursuit of fashion” the Sandy Schreier collection exhibit at @metmuseum exactly a week ago. fashion collecting was once described by former curator in charge of the costume institute Richard Martin as an “alien endeavor”. this remarkable archive by private american collector Sandy Schreier stands as a pioneering example. the exhibit runs until may 17th 2020 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #inpursuitoffashion #sandyschreier #fashion #themet #metmuseum #archive #collector #exhibit #fashionhistory #nyc #newyork #latergram #exhibition (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8wIWJ0H-4e/?igshid=1x67l0k5qkedi

The Costume Institute's fall 2019 exhibition features promised gifts from Sandy Schreier, a pioneering collector, who over the course of more than half a century assembled one of the finest private fashion collections in the United States. The show explores how Schreier amassed a trove of twentieth-century French and American couture and ready-to-wear, not as a wardrobe, but in appreciation of this form of creative expression. The gift is part of The Met's 2020 Collections Initiative celebrating the Museum's 150th anniversary. In Pursuit of Fashion features approximately 80 of the 165 promised gifts, including womenswear, accessories, and fashion illustrations dating from a 1908 pochoir album, Les Robes de Paul Poiret, developed in collaboration with Paul Iribe to a 2004 Phillip Treacy butterfly hat. #InPursuitofFashion #metropolitanmuseumofart @MetCostumeInstitute (at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8QIYjJD2er/?igshid=1j0b0po3xf4cb

Evening Dress | 1925⠀ ——⠀ Anytime I think of the perfect ensemble to ring in a new year I always think of the 1920s silhouette - carefree, decadent and literally made for dancing. This exquisitely embellished dress perfectly captures the era with its haute deco layers. The glittering constellation of beads is all held together by a delicate layer of chiffon. If you have a chance you must see this amazing piece in person at “In Pursuit of Fashion: The Sandy Schreier Collection” at the Met Museum. It’s absolutely incredible up close. ⠀ ⠀ (@metmuseum accession no. Court Dress | 1926⠀ ———⠀ The use of woven metal lamé fabric percolated in fashion throughout the early twentieth century, finding particular use in the theater and increasingly entering high fashion throughout the 1920s. This robe de style-type gown makes ample use of the costly textile, with applied lamé trim that borders cutouts in the skirt and a lengthy train that is composed entirely from the material. Feminine touches like the open wreaths of flowers that encircle the shoulders and populate the train, and the delicate beads that rim the edges of each bloom, exemplify the romantic strand that remained present throughout 1920s fashion. These nostalgic styles were presented in the designs of French houses like Boué Soeurs, who were known for their use of artificial flowers, and Jeanne Lanvin, who continually promoted the wide-hipped robe de style silhouette throughout the decade. They were extensively imitated by American designers and department stores in both sanctioned and illegal copies. The removable train of this dress, which drapes from shoulder to floor, indicates that it was intended for the most formal of occasions and would have been suitable for a young woman to wear for presentation at court.(via @metmuseum accession no. L.2018.61.38a, b)⠀ ⠀ The last pic is one I took at the “In Pursuit of Fashion” exhibition at The Met Museum. This dress is unbelievable in person. I couldn’t stop staring at it and inspecting it. If you’re in NY be sure to check it out before it closes May, 17. ⠀ ———⠀ #inpursuitoffashion #fashion #1920s #20s #costume #dress #style #design #history #couture #mode #mode #gold #courtdress #sandyschreier #metmuseum #glam #beauty #floral #lamé https://www.instagram.com/p/B6OJ0TzABGX/?igshid=109b5uwgpxa0d
