this is, you realise, something you don’t know how to have. it’s been given to you, now, maybe even without the expectation of recompense, but you don’t know how to hold it. how to let your fingers curl against the soft edges of it. you keep expecting the outside of it to rot away, leaving you with sharp, cruel spikes that dig into your skin. this is, you realise, something you don’t know how to keep. the eyes slip under the tender hollows of cheekbones at the breaking point and you feel it take you as a clump of fraying bones, worse for wear at the street-corner. do not mistake this for a sharp siren-scream as the lights streak past the train carriage windows. having slept for twenty two hours all the nights have turned real and dreamy, a cigarette to the cure. you feel it again when the camera shifts focus with the film roll wound tight and the season of space time headaches takes a step back. you realise you don’t know how to have this because no one’s eyes are holding you down when you look away. imagination is a flaw that fractures every scene where you hold out your hand, expecting a heart. this is something you can’t be sure exists, for all the pain of living as the stem of all things cracked open and blossoming froth at the mouth. you want to exchange a poem for an answer, a night alone to a night spent on the other side of the world. you want the rain to wash in the blood so that you can learn to keep a confession like a promise. you want everything to string tightly at the breaking point so that the instance of fragile can turn to an instance of forever. you don’t know what to do with this, how to hold it so that neither of you break. but you think you’d like to try.
