A Fort with a view. . Fort Barrington was (re)built in 1779 and served as a military signal outpost for the island of Antigua. At the time the British were enforcing the ‘Navigation Acts 1651 - 1849’ prohibiting trade with the empires of Netherlands, Spain and France as well as imposing duties on other colonies’ exports. Economic historians found the sugar duties for goods bound to America although small, disproportionately affected the politically active merchants there and this contributed to the start of the American Revolution. #informativeinstagrams #fort #barrington #deep #bay #beach #antigua #there #is #a #great #snorkelable #shipwreck #just #out #of #shot #freetrade #vs #mercantilism (at Deep Bay (vik i Antigua och Barbuda))

“Made it! Here we are Fort Zeelandia, the Fort protecting the Dutch Parliament, slave auction house and gold reserves. Situated in the Essequibo Estuary it is surrounded by cannons and built almost 275 years ago. The Co-operative Republic of Guyana is only 51 years old so gives a bit of context to how long the Europeans were meddling in affairs prior to independence.” #history #lesson #from #Daisy #fort #island #essequibo #estuary #guyana #informativeinstagrams (at Fort Zeelandia (Guyana))

Back to some Georgetown architecture - with this Brutalist adaptation of the Centre Pompidou. Guyana’s links with socialism and the USSR throughout the late ‘60s and ‘70s probably led to this architectural influence. \nI don’t think they could afford the escalator…\n\n#architecture #georgetown #pompidou #brutalism #guyana #informativeinstagrams (at Gecom Headquarters, Kingston)
