Raster: Pixels, good for images with lots of photo detail that do not need to be scaled to a high level.
Vector: Infinitely scaleable, not made of pixels so can be zoomed in on without losing fidelity of image. Ideal for solid colours, simple graphics, typography.

Some very helpful resources here! If I may add another, for those of you would like to make digital art, but struggle to use a pen / tablet, or have tremors/shaking, vector art may be more accessible to you. The learning curve can be a bit steep, but you can make amazing works of art without ever having to draw a line. All of my vector art is made with a mouse and is much less hard on my hands and wrists than more traditional drawing methods. As a bonus, vector art looks very clean and is infinitely scaleable. Work as small or as large as you would like
Art Hacks for Physical Disabilities!!
I know art can be inaccessible to physically disabled people for a lot of reasons, and I think art should be accessible to everyone, so here’s a couple of the things I found to help for a few different issues you may face that stop you participating!
I have a link to all these items (UK) in my link tree!!
IMAGE DESCRIPTION
Slide one: illustration of a white woman with pink hair, wearing a pink outfit, sitting in a power wheelchair, looking at the viewer with thumbs up. Text Reese “hacks to make art more accessible”
Slide two: illustration of three different kinds, using three different types of pencil grips. One hand uses a circular grip. 100 is a large, rectangular grip. Another uses a grip that is ergonomic and fit into the hand. Main text reads “Paul, grip, strength and dexterity”. Subtext reads “there are loads of different types of pencil, grips or design for different disabilities and conditions. Increasing the width of the pencil can give more texture for a better grip using a pencil with a thicker with also reduces the amounts of pressure needed to hold a pencil you can make your own using items like pool noodles. KT tape an air dry clay. You can also put these groups on things like paint brushes.“
Slide three: illustration of a hand using a tool that looks like a wrist support with a paintbrush connected to it text next to it reads “this talk next a paintbrush to your hand in a way that means you don’t need to hold the paintbrush with your fingers and you will need to move your arm around“ on the bottom right hand corner is in photograph of a guided hand device. Text read “regarded hand as a tool designed to reduce the need for moving your hands and fingers and relies on the movement of your shoulder and upper arms and can be used with different materials like paintbrushes, pencils, pens and styluses.
Slide four: main header reads “when in bed“. Illustration of an iPad pillow with a iPad in it is next to text that reads “iPad pillows, put your tablet at an easier to access level when sitting or lying down“. In the bottom left hand corner is an illustration of a girl sitting in bed in her pyjamas with a pillow behind her and a bed table as she is drawing. On the left hand side is a photograph of a bed table with the text reading “bed tables are used to give you a flat tire up surface while in bed, and are often height adjustable”. In the bottom right hand side is a bedsit, a pillow with the text underneath, reading “ bedsitters of specially shaped pillows that you put behind you in bed to help you set up and give you a soft surface to lean back on”.
Slide five: maisie had a read out “at a desk left”. On the left hand side is a photograph of the document holder with the text “document holders put your paper at an angle to help prevent crane in your neck down”. On the right hand, middle side is an illustration of someone using a armrest and on the bottom left hand side is a photograph of the armrest. Text next to them reads “economic arm rests clip onto your table or desk and give you a surface you lean you’re forearms or elbows on. This can be used to steady your arm and reduce pain and fatigue while sitting at a desk”.
Slide six: maisie reads “foot and mouth painters” . on the right hand side is an photograph of swapping Augustine, an Indian woman with no arms, wearing a sari painting with her left foot. In the bottom left hand corner is an illustration of a woman with green hair painting using her mouth. Swapna Augustine is a foot painter who has painted with her feet and participated in multiple exhibitions of foot and mouth painters. Her art is stunning and I would definitely recommend checking some of help work out.“
Slide seven: main text reeds “art without brushes and pens”. On the left-hand side is a photograph of a spin art device. Text next to read it reads “spin out involves using bottles of ink and squirting them onto a spinning piece of paper to create spiral art. Flash animation is mostly based on vector images, which can take up a lot less data if they are very simple, which means that if you do go back to the original files, they are infinitely scaleable and you can play stuff that was originally made to be shared on the internet in 2003 in crisp 8K if you want. Many people have, in the service of archiving, rendered the original files at high resolutions so you don't have to be stuck with fuzzy 240p screenrips, but those high resolution renders are frozen at that resolution, while if you have the original, you could scale it to the size of a building and still have it come out crisp if you have the appropriate display hardware.

Random question, but I'd be interested to hear your biggest DV hot take.
You might expect me to say something about accessory quality control rules, but no! I just really want a fighting system.
I know the Devs want zero violence. But just re-skinning a pokemon-style battle system (like FR and FV have) into something harmless would be like zero extra effort.
For crying out loud, make it a cook-off! Your WH or pet cooks dishes every round, which the opponent has to counter with dishes of their own. HP bars can be crowd appeal/popularity, weapon equips can be recipes for the dishes you make in battle. Infinitely scaleable since coming up with new foods is about as easy as coming up with new weapons.
Wanna tie it into current systems? Stat requirements for equipping certain recipes. Pets can help with the cooking. Generally just use your WH stats to boost the success of your equipped recipes. Cook-off against the NPCs as bosses to win items from or spins in their shop. All of them already have a food associated with them!!
Potions/usable items? Present a pre-made Conecake or NPC food in a round to recover some popularity or for some other effect. Eat a stat food to temporarily raise your stats for the battle (raising your success with certain recipes).
It really, really would be fun to have something engaging to do on the site. Something that doesn't have a daily cap, pays out fairly and isn't slow af. Better recipes/equips would be a longer-term goal while finding creative builds to beat bosses could be a short-term one. And you would have a sort of money sink built in because of the buffs from consumable items!
Please Devs, if you hear me, you have my full permission to use any part of this. Just make the site less boring!

So, I’m seeing a lot of people on FB real mad about the FDA limiting how many they can run. Those people aren’t being stupid, but there’s a likely sensible reason for the limit that, unless you work in medical manufacturing and/or quality control, you might not have much reason to ever have needed to think about. Since I do work in quality control at a medical manufacturing facility, it’s something I’m familiar with. It’s called Process Validation. Basically, any time we use a new process or change an existing process in a way that might potentially alter the results (including scale-up, because not all processes are infinitely scaleable without detriment to effectiveness), we have to make sure that the change won’t adversely affect product quality. That very often means temporarily doing smaller and/or fewer batches, in a way that will functionally demonstrate that the new change doesn’t cause problems, before going into full production. That way, if “in theory” turns out to differ significantly from “in practice” and the resulting end products aren’t satisfactory, there isn’t as large a waste of materials and labor. The quote from the FDA in the article strongly suggests to me that that’s the purpose of the limit:
Battelle is authorized to decontaminate up to 10,000 compatible N95 respirators per day, consistent with the data provided to FDA. Battelle shall provide FDA weekly reports, including data according to a testing plan for scale-up reviewed by FDA, regarding the decontamination of compatible N95 respirators, including any reductions in decontamination ability.
Weekly reports including data according to a testing plan for scale up.... including any reductions in decontamination ability? Sounds like process validation for sure! In that case, the limits would be temporary, to be relaxed once data comes in proving that the process is still effective at this scale, and doesn’t cause damage or degradation to the masks themselves that would interfere with their functionality and/or fit. While I can’t say with 100% certainty that this is the case, it certainly seems likely. Anyway, if that’s something you’ve seen and wondered about, or if you know people who are being ranty about it, go ye forth informed!

If I were infinitely rich, I'd be curious to try intuitive eating. Just spend a couple months DoorDashing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted it. Of course this wouldn't be a scaleable nor ethical solution, but I'd be curious.
Prescriptive diet culture, especially (but not exclusively) the sort aimed at losing weight, is ableist and sizeist, with frequent undertones of racism, classism, and sexism. It relies on the premise that all bodies can and should fit into a certain size and a certain range of “health” and ability, that fat and disabled bodies are inherently lesser, and frequently relies on patronizing or limiting the options of poor people for their alleged “own good,” stigmatizing or patronizing the food choices of non-European cultures, and judging women’s and perceived-women’s bodies more harshly than men’s bodies.
In response to this, various fat liberation, body positive, and health-at-every-size movements have arisen to challenge this narrative to varying degrees. One of the alternatives often promoted in these contexts is “intuitive eating,” in which people eat what their bodies crave, whenever they’re hungry, instead of following a prescriptive diet or schedule. This is framed as radical, liberatory rebellion and self-actualization against diet culture.
Intuitive eating is great for some people. However, there are some problems with promoting it as a universal solution.
First of all, “Everyone should eat intuitively” is just as prescriptive as any other prescriptive diet. It still frames food choices as something with a right and a wrong answer. What superficially sounds like “Eat whatever you want” actually becomes “You must eat whatever you want, and examine carefully whether you actually want it, and defend your choices accordingly.”
Secondly, intuitive eating is fundamentally inaccessible to the majority of the world’s population. Perhaps if we lived in a Star Trek universe where we could just command a replicator to create food and have it instantly ready for us, then most, if not all people, could eat intuitively. But in our own world, our food choices are constrained by time, money, and availability, as well as restrictions like allergies and sensitivities.
When I think about what food I want to eat, I have to think about what I already have. What I can afford to buy. What I have the time and energy to prepare. I might “intuit” that I crave a steak, but what I have readily on hand is a bowl of cereal. Intuition won’t help someone with chronic fatigue who can’t stand at a stove for long or chop vegetables, or someone on food stamps who has to stretch their budget, or someone who works long shifts and comes home exhausted, or a parent of three children with food allergies who only feeds themself leftover scraps from feeding them. Who has time and energy to cook a meal from scratch? Who has money to go out to a restaurant? Whose invisible and underpaid labor -- farm workers, grocery workers, restaurant cooks, homemakers -- does this system rely upon?
The third problem with promoting intuitive eating as a universal solution is that many foods are manufactured in such a way as to sensorily mislead the eater about their properties. The idea that “artificial” or “processed” foods are somehow “worse” than “natural” foods -- or that those are meaningful categories -- is ridiculous and baseless. However, it is a fact that many foods are made to mimic the look, taste, smell, and texture of foods they do not actually contain. This makes it harder for eaters to “intuit” a food’s properties by the usual means. Eaters may have to rely on ingredients lists and nutritional information rather than sensory input alone. This is especially true for people who have specific nutritional needs, like allergies or nutrient deficiencies, to either avoid or seek out specific food attributes.
Finally, even if all other obstacles were eliminated, some people are just not good at intuiting their own food needs. People with executive functioning disabilities may forget that they’re hungry, or not recognize their bodies’ hunger signals. Not everyone is naturally good at piloting a meat suit. Food is difficult, and it’s okay to need external reminders to refuel.
Intuitive eating rhetoric can sound suspiciously similar to the common rhetoric of the “natural” “wellness” movement, stemming from the premise that all bodies are born with a natural alignment to a certain standard of “health” and normative ability, and only external factors and individual choices can “corrupt” it. In reality, there are no normative bodies or abilities. Plenty of people are born with food-related disabilities, whether difficulty remembering to eat, anxiety, susceptibility to nutrient deficiency, allergies, diabetes, or all kinds of other conditions. Food is hard. Harder for some people than others. And that’s okay.
There’s nothing wrong with intuitive eating, but it’s not a universal solution to everyone’s food difficulties. We need affordable, accessible food for everyone. We need everyone to have the free time and support they need to perform all activities of daily living. We need living wages for everyone at every part of the food supply chain. We need clearly labeled food ingredients and nutritional values. We need a society where everyone has the resources, time, and support to eat whatever they want, and the information to know what they’re eating. And then, maybe, intuitive eating can be a more attainable goal for people who want it.
We also need a society in which bodily autonomy is respected, and people’s food choices and other health and bodily choices are rightly regarded as no one else’s business. We need widespread recognition that there’s no standard of health or ability that anyone “should” have and no way that anyone “should” eat, and that what matters is ensuring that everyone has equitable access to resources, which each individual can choose how to use, whether that’s eating frozen dinners every day, growing vegetables for fun, eating only purple things, or using a timer to remember when it’s time to eat. But until we achieve that society, “intuitive eating” might as well mean “let them eat cake.”

"Somewhere during human history magic lost to technology. Technology came to dominate our mindshare while magic was relegated to superstition. I, like many, assumed magic lost because it turned out not to be real. As a young techno-capitalist I was ok with this; I was into computers and the whole world needed an upgrade. But eventually I found challenges that technology wasn’t addressing: broken minds, violence, depression. I don’t just mean somewhere out there among the homeless or mentally ill but in my own life too, successful as I appeared. I went looking for ways to transform myself, and found many wondrous things. I found the keys to self-actualization. I found ways of entering altered states of consciousness that conferred uncommon understanding. I found ways of uncovering painful memories, repressed but not forgotten, and ways of re-experiencing those memories differently, thereby changing the effects of the past on my present. I discovered the meaning of synchronicity and how to use them to navigate my life’s course. Then after years of this it finally hit me… magic is real. Now, I don’t mean that everything that’s ever been called magic by everyone is real. But are there attitudes, actions, and understandings that can result in intense, unordinary, and significant experiences inside one’s self, between our selves, and around us? Yes. Are there ways of growing in their skillful wielding? Yes. Are there ways of guiding, influencing, or stimulating in others these peculiar effects? Absolutely. And after you’ve experienced enough of it you just sort of acquiesce and say to yourself, “Ah, so this is magic.” You simply have no reasons left not to call it that. Perhaps you, like many moderns, are prejudiced against magic and biased toward technology. Well I have news for you: Not only is magic real, but magic is technology. Magic is just a type of technology with un-obvious system requirements. Like? Subtlety. Rather than electricity or software, magic requires the ability to access and observe the delicate sensations and observations arising within and around one’s self. Magic is subtle technology. Over time the Western mind lost it’s acquaintance with the subtle, which is why magic seemed to disappear. We lost it during the rise of organized religions, when navigating subtle experiences and altered states came under the control of sanctioned authorities. We lost it during the Enlightenment and Scientific Revolution when we regained personal authority through rationalism and empiricism but threw the magic out with the religious bathwater. We lost more of it during the industrial revolution, where subtle sensations were only a distraction in the drudgery of the assembly line. And we lost still more during the Information Age, dominated by industrial educations, where the pressure to learn standardized curricula forced us to routinely suppress our intuition. The other thing about magic is that it doesn’t scale as easily as manufactured goods and services. This is because market adoption tends to be inversely proportional to skill. So the products that scale most quickly are those that require the user to know or do as little as possible. Magic doesn’t work that way, at least not in its current stage of development. Magic requires a skillful user to navigate internal experiences that others cannot see and to shift and focus attention onto indescribable objects. The duplicability is poor. The instruction manual difficult to write. The onus on the user, great. Because of all this, the word “technology” now tends to mean just all the the fundable, scaleable, shippable, stuff that anyone can buy and with the push of a button get some effect. Missing are the technologies that require subtle sensations to be masterfully directed, expanded, and amplified. But things are beginning to change. What is the mind? What is the Self? What can we become? What is our greatest destiny? It is just these sort of questions that are coming to matter most to a people who have for decades binged on easy access to every material want. And without skillfully navigating the subtle, these questions are impenetrable. You can see it happening most obviously with the increasing popularity of meditation. Think about it: here we are in this glitzy, gadgety, gluttonous society full of streaming high-def video, all-you-can-eat buffets, and amusement parks. Yet people en-masse are starting to say, “Well, I like those things sometimes but you know what? I think I’m going to just sit here with my eyes closed.” And they’re having a wild time. And what is meditation? I’ll tell you. Meditation is the skillful immersion of the self in the subtle. Which means that meditation is magic — literally, the attempt to cast a state-altering spell on one’s self. This is why the results from person to person are so varied. We can see the return of subtle technology in many other places too: in the unprecedented popular interest in psychology and yoga, in the revitalized psychedelic movement, in the renewed respect for indigenous medicine and ceremony. We can see it in our language, with the appearance of concepts such as “ego death” in the vernacular. And just about every other person I meet these days, whether engineer or venture capitalist, seems to at some point confide in me that they’ve been getting into “energy work”. We are a people becoming less interested in having things and more interested in having experiences. Less interested in becoming rich and more interested in becoming whole. Less interested in information and more interested in states — states of peak performance and flow, states of seeming union with the infinite, states of elevated perspective that disillusion us of our fears and anxieties and reveal them as baseless in the face of our true nature. Magic will return, understood this time as subtle technology. It will be integrated with the obvious technology of today. Together they will give rise to the next great industries, and to new jobs and livelihoods that we can once again believe in, which will not enslave or ensnare us but rather heal us and make us whole."

Studio Mortazavi to build "world's first 3D-printed school" in Madagascar
Studio Mortazavi has designed a 3D-printed school made from concrete and locally-sourced construction materials in Fianarantsoa, Madagascar.
Designed for non-profit organisation Thinking Huts, the solar-powered school will be made from pods that can serve different functions – as classrooms, science labs and dance studios, for example – and be expanded as needed.
Each pod will be constructed from a 3D-printed concrete aggregate, which Studio Mortazavi said can be made from recycled materials to reduce CO2 emissions.
A roof made from galvanised metal covered with native grass will help the buildings blend into their surroundings.
The school will have 3D-printed walls
When is it is complete Thinking Huts believes the structures will be the first 3D-printed school in the world.
"From our knowledge, we will be building the first 3D-printed school in Madagascar," Thinking Huts founder Maggie Grout told Dezeen. "There is a possibility that a 3D-printed school exists in the world, though we have not uncovered where it may be."
"3D printing technology has been used in various building projects; the most similar would be NewStory who are building 3D-printed houses in Latin America," she added.
Thinking Huts eventually aims to expand beyond the pilot project and build schools in partnership with communities throughout Madagascar.
A relief pattern will decorate the walls
For the initial pilot, a single-storey building will be printed for the university campus of Ecole de Management et d'Innovation Technologique (EMIT) in Fianarantsoa, which will measure 230 square metres and house up to 20 students.
This design can then be expanded by adding new pods to the first Thinking Huts school.
"The beauty of the pods is that we can build an infinite campus with them as needed by the students and school," Studio Mortazavi founder Amir Mortazavi told Dezeen.
"Since the 3D printer is limited in terms of the diameter it can print, the pod technique is the most efficient way to be flexible and to be able to grow as needed."
Thinking Huts' school will be powered by solar panels
The design of the pods, which have one concave, one convex and two straight sides, was chosen because it suited the surroundings and was scaleable.
"We designed the school after doing a great deal of research on the printing constraints and capabilities, the vernacular architecture of Madagascar and geometric shapes that are the most conducive for creating modular pods," Mortazavi said.
"We began with trying various different pod configurations using circles, hexagons, pentagons and octagons, and decided on a hybrid between a purely faceted shape and an organic shape."
The exterior of the school will consist of two narrow walls with a hollow or honeycombed centre, which reduces the amount of cement used and can be insulated if needed.
Studio Mortazavi designed a relief pattern for the exterior walls, which will be printed by the 3D-printer and repeated on the interior walls.
"We found a Malagasy print that was used on textiles and repeated that pattern on the skin of the building," Mortazavi said.
"We also thought about integrating colour into the aggregate that is used in the printing to have the building adapt to the natural colours that exist within the landscape of Madagascar," he added.
"Something akin to a 3D-printed rammed-earth technique."
The facade will also feature a climbing wall and pockets that the children can use for a vertical farm.
Solar panels on the roof will power the school, which will have water catchment systems, energy-efficient lighting and compostable toilets."For the initial project in Madagascar we won't need heating as the average temperature rarely dips below room temperature," Mortazavi said.
"However, we will add fans to cool the buildings and we also have ventilation surrounding the top of all of the pods. When we do print these schools in climates that demand heating, I envision radiant heating to be used as the most efficient and comfortable heating source."
Materials for the school will be sourced from local companies, and Thinking Huts and Studio Mortazavi hope to eventually also develop commercially available products to support the local craftsmen and industry.
"We are working with a construction and material supply company called Holcim in Madagascar," Mortazavi said. "We will make a reconnaissance trip to Madagascar to work with sustainable wood and local craftsman to design and build the furniture."
The school will be built in collaboration with Finnish 3D technology company Hyperion Robotics, and Thinking Huts is currently fundraising to help fund the first school. It plans to start building the school in July or August 2021.
Other recent community-driven 3D-printed projects include one by Yves Béhar that focuses on building houses for farming community in Latin America and a series of rentable concrete houses in Eindhoven.

IXD302 Digital Product Research
As young designers there are ways that we can make money from our work online. This is be creating and selling a digital product. When we were told to think about a digital product we wanted to create I started with a mind map of different types of digital products that exist today.
From my previous projects I know that I am a very capable and strong designer that would be able to create such products and sell them online.
There are many positives to creating a digital product over a physical one:
-They’re Infinitely Scaleable: there is no limit to the volume of products that you can sell.
-There are low upfront costs: there is very little cost in creating the digital products.
Before creating my product it is important to identify the target market and if it is viable. It will be designers, business owners and developers that will buy my digital products. Why designers buy existing digital products online:
Buying a digital product such as web wireframes may be bought by a designer for a number of reasons. One example could be showing these to clients allowing them to have a visual example of the digital product, this quickly allows the client and designer to establish what they want while saving time and money. What could take a designer many hours/days to create they could purchase online instead. This is called a Buy in and would be purchased by the company as an expense of the project.
I also created a mind map to identify existing online platforms for selling digital products. This will help me later on when I go to do this.
So as I am a young designer wanting to sell my products to make a little income I have to consider the price of the product. There are a number of ways I can make my product appear as good value. When selling digital products its important that they are marketed in the best way possible. There are easy ways that we can do this starting with the language. We don’t call something the cheap or less content package we use words such as essential instead. Another example is using problem/solution language. “Most design courses are missing the mark” suggesting that existing courses aren’t as good as this one. Following that statement saying, “we’re not like that we’re doing something different/better,” leads the client to believe that they are getting a better product.
Business model:
-Reduced price: makes people believe that they are getting a better deal on the product
-bundle: eg. 3 for 2, getting products for better value makes them more desirable
-Free: this may be because you want to gain an audience rather than money for a project.
-Freemium: basic services are provided free of charge while more advanced features must be paid for.
The next step now is to identify what digital products I will be creating.
