2020 Vanity Clean Out

I always try to clean out my vanity areas (places where I would keep my skincare, makeup, body care, & hair care products). This year I was a little late. I’ve had this stored in a bag for a really long time I just never got around to writing this up and taking pictures, because these posts tend to be long as I do like to talk a bit about them and the reason why I’m discarding them. Going forward, I would be adding these to my empties and clearing whatever I don’t want every month rather than doing it yearly.

HAIR CARE

1. Chi Silk Infusion (12oz / 300ml) Honestly, I don’t style my hair with heat tools that often enough to be using this. I’ve had this in my stash for a really long time. It does break my heart that I’m wasting this product since it’s practically still full. I would give this away but I’ve had this for so many years and there’s some weird sediments on the bottom that I don’t feel comfortable giving it away.

2. Aveda smooth infusion style-prep smoother (3.4oz / 100ml) I got this when I went and got a haircut at the Aveda school, which was a long time ago. Honestly, I didn’t find that it did much for my hair. There’s only a little left but I just don’t really reach for it.

3. Aveda invati scalp revitalizer (0.34oz / 10ml) I got this for free with a shampoo and conditioner. I’m not sure if it really did anything for my scalp and there was a strong herbal scent to it, which I’m not a big fan of. This product was also another that I didn’t reach for. There is only a little left but it is a very old sample.

SKIN CARE

4. Huxley Secret of Sahara Sleep Mask; Good Night (30g / 1.06oz) Honestly, I’m not a big fan of sleeping masks. I believe this one you can also use it as a moisturizer as well. I didn’t really like it, but packaging and product consistency are on point. I’ve only used it about 1-3 times, before it expired.

5. Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Hydrating Toner (15ml) I tried using this but I can’t get past the scent of this. It does smell very natural, but strong as well. I’m going to keep the bottle as it’s glass and will be nice for travels. I also found the formulation sticky/oily as well. It does say to shake it before use each time.

6. Frienvita Peeling N Deadcell Sauna Godness Pad These were my worst purchase ever. I did bring a few of these on one of my travels but it was horrible. The pad fell apart so easily and the rice/ exfoliation product was so lumpy that it was super hard to spread, yet alone exfoliate with.

BODY CARE

7. The Face Shop smile foot Relaxing Patch These are amazing when your legs or feet are sore. I’m only getting rid of these because they have expired since 2018 and have lost its effectiveness. I did try them prior to putting it in my dispose bin.

8. Miniso Winter Lovers Hand Cream: Sweet Orange (0.7oz / 20g) I bought this on a whim since the store was closing and had a sale. The pack did come with 3 and I do know that I have used one up not sure about the second one. This one does smell pretty good but the formulation is very bad. It leaves a slight stickiness with a powdery residue. Also when I rub my hands I’m just rubbing the dirt and the cream itself off.

9.  LAVANILA The Healthy Deodorant: Vanilly Summer (57g / 2oz) This was my favourite deodorant for a long time. I really like the round shape as I never feel the plastic hitting my skin compared to the typical oval ones. I love the scent of this, this was a limited edition scent. This is just really old to the point that the actually product falls out now, plus the scent is no longer as strong as it was before. I’m a little sad that Sephora no longer carries this brand. I have also tried the Vanilla Passionfruit which is another one of my favourite scents.

10. Rocky Mountain Soap Co. Liquid Crystal Deodorant: Lemongrass (60ml) I wasn’t a big fan of this. I didn’t like how grainy it felt. And like a lot of their products there is a strong scent. Not a big fan of liquid deodorants.

MAKEUP

11. Skin Food Pearl Creamy Under Eye Pencil This was one of the first ever eye product that I ever bought. I loved how creamy it was and the color pay off was excellent. I wished they still had this. I wasn’t able to find it when I went back in 2018. I have found that Skin Food seemed to be fading away in Korea and on the market.

12. LABIOTTE Wine Angle Mascara 02 Volume Fixer  I wanted a mascara that would help with volume. I found that this one did give me volume but when I bat my eyes the product would transfer. I would not get this again. Packaging is very cute though.

13. The Face Shop Make Me Star waterproof gel liner 02 I didn’t really use this that much. Thought I would just have it on hand if I ever wanted to line my eyes. This has now become hard/ dried.

14. the Saem Cover Perfection Tip Concealer 01 I really liked using this concealer, but nowadays I just use my cushions as concealer as well. This one is just old and has separated now.

15. e.l.f Powder Brush This was my favourite brush. The handle actually came off, I did repair it but then it came off again. Hence I’m calling it quits for this brush now because I can always get another one since it’s inexpensive, but for now I will be using what is in my stash.

16. IOPE Air Cushion XP N21 Ice Vanilla I bought this on a whim and to test it out. This cushion is very old, back when cushions just started to become popular. Honestly, this was too light for my skin and felt very heavy, but gave a very dewy finish. I’m actually getting rid of the compact and a refill that I never opened. This cushion was quite expensive at the time like $40-50 CAD for a university student.

17. Laniege BB Cushion Light  This was my first cushion. I’ve actually used. I did finish it, I just kept the case which I am now getting rid of. 

18. moonshot Micro Correctfit Cushion 201 Beige This cushion was okay I still prefer the Microfit version. But the compact of this one is so pretty, sadly I dropped it on the ground and it’s broken. Hence, I’m discarding it. I did finish the product.

19. Mamonde Blossoming High Cover Cushion Perfect Liquid #21 Ivory This cushion was different in that it had a mesh part instead of a sponge. Coverage was high but I found it a bit cakey on my skin and heavy. I also found that it accentuated my dry areas.

20. Tarte energy LipSurgence skintuative lip tint I believe I got this through Sephora Birthday gifts. This is super old, hence why I’m discarding it. I loved this as it gave my lips the perfect amount of color and shine. Too bad they no longer have this. I was going to purchase/ find something similar but I have bought so many lip products over the years that I will have to hold off for now.

Home sweet Parisian home, whether you live in Paris or not. 

Ines de la Fressange is stepping into the sanctuary with her new book Maison: Parisian Chic at Home (see my profile posts of her previous style books here, here and here), and along with her co-author Marin Montagut, they are both taking readers inside their own homes in Paris as well as inside 13 other Parisian apartments (the founder of Sézane, the duo behind the French decor and candle company Astier de Villatte, just to name a few).

With the opportunity to review a copy prior to its release just this past Tuesday, my decor curiosities are deeply inspired as while there are many reoccurring themes that must be Parisian go-to decor ideas, there was much  reaffirming of the ideas I saw this past summer both in Paris, but also throughout the countryside. Many of which are simple and inexpensive ways to add your signature style to your sanctuary whether you rent or own. 

I have created a list of 21 decor ideas found throughout the book, and if more than just a couple of these ideas speak to you, I highly recommend picking it up as the photography by Claire Cocano is intimate and brilliant, and the insights from the home's inhabitants are insightful and offer even more creative ideas. 

Most importantly, and this was something I spoke with a handful of people while I was in France, the goal with Parisian and even French decor, is not about achieving perfection. Rather it is about creating a sense of bienevue (welcome) to whomever enters, a sense of ease and the ability to live and live well amongst the four walls (and perhaps a terrasse). From the details of essentials in the kitchen, to the touch of the outdoors with ubiquitous bud vases, simple, thoughtful decor takes time and is unique to each individual who lives in a space. 

1.Welcome a variety of textiles

Velvet, linen, hemp, damask silks are recommended by Ines de la Fressange for use on cushions, mattress toppers and other details about the home. 

2. Add the light of candles

Recently a reader asked about my favorite candles, and I am happy to share. I couldn't agree more with this decor suggestion as while having flattering and welcoming light from lamps is a wonderful idea, the natural movement of a flame is a lovely complement. I am gradually adding to my collection, and loving what I am finding. And even better, it saves money as you don't have to buy a full bouquet.

Perhaps it is an old farm door to add to your kitchen épeicerie or tiles for a backdrop. You never know when a unique and signature find will be discovered. 

8. Create a backdrop for everyday life

I saw many demijohns during my trip this past summer, and three of them were beautiful arranged in Sharon Santoni's cottage in which I stayed. Often they are sold with their wicker cover, but after removing the wicker, the green brilliance (there are many sizes) adds a touch of life and elegance, as well as simplicity to a room.

11. Welcome handmade or handcrafted items into your home, especially your kitchen

Gracianna Winerys Trini Amador Is Driven by the Gift of Gratitude

José Trinidad “Trini” Amador III and his wife, Lisa Amador, are co-owners of Gracianna Winery located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. Together, they pay tribute to Trini’s maternal grandmother, Gracianna Lasaga, who was French-Basque and emigrated to the U.S. after World War II. Her story of hard work and gratitude is reflected in the wine and culture at Gracianna.

Gracianna Winery is known for its award-winning Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Zinfandel. While the Amadors appreciate the accolades, those who speak to them will learn they focus more on the experience of visitors to their estate — especially those wine lovers who share the family’s philosophy of having something to be grateful for.

In the following interview, Trini discusses the origin of his wine journey, how Gracianna Winery stayed resilient during the pandemic and California wildfires, and why he remains grateful for his business in hard times.

1. You have had a successful consulting business since 1999. Why did you decide to get into the wine industry?

Good question. Lisa and I are both full time in our careers — marketing and healthcare philanthropy. Our son’s passion sparked the entire family. After we caught our son making wine at 15 years old in the garage, we decided to throw the wine that he made away. Our challenge to him, if he was serious, was to get training in the form of an internship. Three months later he had an internship and then things got serious [grins]. People started asking to buy the wine and one night at Sunday night dinner I said, “If one more person asks us to buy this wine we have to get in the wine business.” The family bootstrapped it starting small and growing organically with 50 cases of Pinot and 50 cases of Zinfandel. Both won gold at the 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. That was our 2007 vintage. 14 years later, we are as hungry as that first day.

2. There is a floral and metal sculpture of a gift that’s located in the front of your winery’s driveway. What does this gift represent?

Gratitude. My grandmother was Gracianna. When I was a boy, she used to talk about being grateful and thankful. Not the easiest concept to grasp when you are 4 or 5 years old, but it stuck with me. It took me nearly 50 years to get to the bottom of her need to ensure that being grateful was the front-and-center value for our family. Our dear friend Bob Emmons, the world’s preeminent authority on gratefulness at University of California at Davis [professor of psychology and founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Positive Psychology] would say that “gratitude is boundless.” He has a way of keeping our hands on the gratitude touchstone and unofficially operates as our “gratitude north.” For Gracianna, we are grateful for an endless bounty of intimacy with our members, friends, and family. We share what is real. But I know I’m grateful for creating a platform for seeking more meaning. That discovery process will never end.

3. How has Gracianna Winery adapted during the Covid-19 pandemic and California fires?

Being resilient is not an option, but a necessity. It started with the Northern California fires in 2017. Then we were hit with a flood and another fire in 2019, and recently the pandemic in 2020 to 2021. It has been rough. But we all need to be resilient, not only in our business but in our frame of mind, our relationships, and caring for one another. I am grateful that we have an established model in which we sell 99 percent direct-to-consumer. Gracianna has over 800 wine club members with about 10,000 names on our mailing list which remained steady. However, our sales were up 15 percent, so in other words, our club helped us through … and we must say that they told us we have helped them, too. We are here for one another.

4. What do you say to the person visiting Gracianna who is new to wine?

“Welcome!” There are many great wineries with a similar narrative [as Gracianna that are] “family-owned” or “award-winning” — but that says more about what they are, not who they are. Gracianna is intimate. It’s real, [it’s] friendly — we seek to connect on a human level.

5. You have Hispanic and French-Basque ancestry. What are your thoughts on the lack of diversity in the wine industry?

I think there are two sides of that coin. On the producer side, it takes a lot of capital to start a winery. Even if one buys fruit and uses a custom-crush facility, there are still a lot of sunk costs. It leaves anyone without financial means little opportunity to break through. It can be done, of course, but it is more of the exception than a rule. From the consumer side, fine wine is not inexpensive. The rituals and overall language of wine make for an intimidating entry. At Gracianna we shun the artifice and suggest to folks they start with, “Do I like this or not?” and then explore the flavors to express how they feel when tasting our wines. Also, when I hear someone say “forest floor” I try hard not to roll my eyes [laughs].

6. You will open up in April for the season. What will you ‘gift’ visitors this year?

Our 2019 Pinot Noir is named Resilience, which reflects the spirit of Gracianna and all of our guests. We lost most of our 2020 vintage due to the fires and then the pandemic forced us to close just as the season was beginning in April last year. Things have been difficult for many, and Gracianna saw a chance to remind us of how strong we all have been. Thus, Resilience was born.

7. What’s next for Gracianna?

Always something coming… Next is our first Napa Cab. It’s made in the Russian River style: juicy, elegant, low- alcohol, and not over-extracted. We chose the name “Lutèce” for our Cabernet Sauvignon to honor my great grandmother’s dream to come to America from the Pyrenees. Her first step was Lutèce [the medieval name for Paris], and “Lutèce” represents our first step into Napa Valley Cabernets.
