ECD: What’s your latest book Iron Scars about? CF: Iron Scars is about a big family of adopted kids living on an island in the Pacific Northwest who get caught up in a war between the witches and fairies. It's an open-ended, rambling story. My goal was to create a world that I could play around in for a while, and I was inspired by other long-form comics series like Jeff Smith's Bone, Tove Jansson's Moomins, and Mike Mignola's Hellboy. Iron Scars is inspired by my childhood/early adulthood living on McNeil Island, which was also the subject of my book Prison Island. The family in the book is loosely based on a family I nannied for, as well as families I babysat for, as a teenager living on the island. Besides being home to a prison, McNeil was also a wildlife preserve, so the woods around our house were dense and full of animals, both cute and dangerous. You could easily replace the imps in Iron Scars with raccoons that were always lurking, the larger fairies with coyotes that would menace our pets, the Sea Witch with harbor seals whose weird snorty-barking noises would wake me up at night, etc. ECD: What's next for you? CF: I recently signed with Susan Hawk of @upstartcrowlit, and most of my time now is working with her on refining some pitches so that she can send those to editors. One is a fairy tale teen romance, the other is a non-fiction book about my library obsession (libraries are So Cool!) For my self-published comics, I'm putting together a 10th Anniversary Edition of my Ignatz Award winning comic Woman King that should be out this summer.
