Perhaps she was being overly eager, balancing nearly twelve books in her arms while she busied herself searching for another to add to the collection. She hadn’t been to the bookstore in weeks and the newest stock of books was far too plentiful to only choose one. Or two. Or three. In truth, she would consider it a crime if she were to return home with any less than a dozen new volumes, so she didn’t intend to put any of the ones she’d drawn back. Her arms, however, were more than happy to relieve themselves of the weight and before she could shift her weight enough to catch her balance, the stack of books fell to the ground with an awful clatter. Discouraged but far from defeated, Pen knelt down to begin collecting her scattered cluster of tomes. As she reached for one of the heftier publications, all she could do was hope no one had seen her make such a cake of herself.

It was supposed to be a quick in and out for the young author, a routine dropoff, a practiced choreography of movements. She'd slip inside the print shop to do the exchange of goods before anyone could notice something out of place. With her hood up and only a bit of her hair visible, it was easy to pass herself off as an Irish servant girl. And such a girl garnered no excess attention, which is exactly what she desired. She'd done it before, dozens of times, but the weather had always seemed charming enough when it was time to deliver the newest edition of everyone's favorite gossipmonger. Normally, there was no need for anything more than her light cloak to shield her identity. Today, however, was proving to be her unlucky day.

"Damn," Pen muttered under her breath, glancing outside the shop windows into a landscape of mist. The horses were fine to travel in rain and wind, they'd done it before, but with such a thick fog blanketing the streets of London, her carriage would be stalled until the weather cleared up. "And thus, there go my hopes of returning at a reasonable hour."
