Kashi Vishwanath is a place filled with the order of cosmic chaos. Every now and then, you'll encounter a logic defying event, and yet it will all make sense to the soul. It is a place where devotees of Hindu religion, go to die, so that can be free from the Sansarik cycle of incarnations and rebirth. At the same time, it is believed that Kashi being the beloved city of Shiva is epicenter of life energies on the planet. Believers call it the naval of the Earth due to this. But, for my camera it is beyond life and death. Varanasi, Banaras, Kashi all are the names of the oldest continously living city on the planet. A place with roots in legends and history. It is believed to be the most loved city of Shiva, and thus is privileged with a status in indian culture, that no other city enjoys. On the other hand, its strategically strong location on the banks of Ganga, explains the historical importance this city still maintains. According to Indian constitution, Ganga is not just a river, she is a living entity, a person, mother of the indian civilization and society. Mother Ganga, is often referred to as Ganga Ji, where the word Ji signifying respect for someone higher in status. Ganga Ji was hard to pronounce for English and other occidental geographer and historians, so they broke the word to River Ganges (Ganga Ji) taking away the very soul of the civilization. Whether the act was deliberate or an innocent mistake due to language barrier, is often discussed in sociopolitical lobbies and debates. A conversation is what makes a photo. I often say that, but sometimes it is difficult for a rational mind to understand, that all conversations are not verbal. The camera makes any person bilingual. Holding a camera, we start talking in a language which doesn't need sounds or grammar. And, no I am not talking about visual language of imagery. That comes later when the photo is presented to an audience. The language I refer to is more abstract. It works through vibrations and energy. To a rational brain I would say that it works through intuitions and being one with the place. Culture is not something visual to photograph and present. Culture is a living entity just like any other person on the planet. To portray a person through photography, there must be a certain level of curiosity, interaction and respect. Otherwise, the photo will not align with the personality of the subject that is being portrayed. The same can be said about a culture. When a photographer lands at a place with a camera, but without curiosity, respect and a desire to interact and understand the roots of that society, they only bring out visual sensations justifying their prejudices. Have you ever wondered why black and white photos are so magical? How the most common scenes turn into something interesting when presented in monochrome? I guess it is because for the eyes, black and white in itself is an anomaly. It shocks the brain, although ever so gently. And, that makes it interesting from the very first moment it is presented to us. On the other hand, monochrome takes us back to the melancholic era. The times when photos were monochromatic anyway. In the end, all life forms devote to only two goals, survival and leaving their offsprings in better circumstances than theirs. To reach their various paths are taken. Some act on material or physical aspects, some walk through spiritual labyrinth. But, eventually any life form with some sort of consciousness take one or both of the aforementioned paths. And, street photography is a mere documentation of this colorful process in its various stages, without interfering or disturbing the delicate balance.
