Diwali, the festival of lights, is a time of joy, family, and celebration. While traditionally celebrated in India with grandeur, many are now choosing to experience Diwali abroad for a unique blend of cultural festivities and international travel. If you're considering a getaway during Diwali 2024, here’s why an international vacation is the best way to celebrate, and the top destinations to enjoy this festive season.
Why Celebrate Diwali Abroad?
Escape the Crowds: Major cities in India become quite crowded during Diwali, making an international escape a peaceful alternative. Instead of facing traffic and noise, you can unwind in scenic, serene locations while still cherishing the essence of Diwali.
Cultural Exploration: Experiencing Diwali abroad allows you to blend Indian cultural traditions with the customs of another country. Some places, such as Dubai and Singapore, celebrate Diwali on a grand scale, providing a fusion of Indian traditions and their own unique culture.
Unforgettable Family Bonding: An international vacation gives families the chance to spend quality time together. Sharing special Diwali moments in a new country—whether it's lighting diyas by the beach or enjoying a cultural show—creates memories that will last a lifetime.
Exclusive Festivities Abroad: Certain countries hold large Diwali celebrations with stunning fireworks, light displays, and cultural programs. Whether it's the Diwali lights in Singapore’s Little India or the grand celebrations in Dubai, the festive cheer is alive and well abroad!
Shop, Dine, and Relax: International destinations offer the chance to indulge in global shopping and dining experiences. You can enjoy Diwali sales abroad, along with local and international cuisine at some of the world’s finest restaurants.
Where to Celebrate Diwali Abroad in 2024?
1. Dubai: A Fusion of Tradition and Luxury
Known for its lavish Diwali celebrations, Dubai is a top destination for Indians looking to celebrate abroad. Punctuation Day
I took a recent story from my drafts and looked for punctuation mistakes and made it better
Across ASEAN: A Year in Every School
Tara had always known her life would be different. While her friends in their hometown stayed in one school, in one country, her world was an open map. Her mother, Ms. Rivera, was an international school teacher whose passion for education took them across the vibrant tapestry of ASEAN countries. Every year, they packed their bags, said goodbye, and stepped into a new chapter in a new place.
Tara’s journey began in Brunei, a peaceful, green country where the air felt cool and everything seemed to move a little slower. She was nervous on her first day at Jerudong International School, where she started nursery, but she quickly learned how warm the people were. Her classmates came from all over the world, and soon, Tara found herself sharing her lunch with a girl from New Zealand and learning phrases in Malay from a boy from Malaysia. In Brunei, she discovered the beauty of stillness and the power of nature’s silence during a visit to the pristine Ulu Temburong rainforest.
After Brunei, Tara moved to Cambodia, where she experienced a deeper connection to history. Her mother taught at Westview Cambodian International School, where Tara attended preschool, and she quickly fell in love with the countrys rich culture. She visited the ancient temples of Angkor Wat, learning about the Khmer Empire. Though Cambodia was still healing from its tragic past, Tara admired the strength and resilience of its people.
Next was Indonesia, specifically Jakarta. The city’s energy was intense, and Tara initially found it overwhelming. But ACG School Jakarta had a strong sense of community at kindergarten, and soon she felt at home again. She joined lots of fun days at school. During the holidays, her mother would take her to Bali and Surabaya, where Tara found peace by the ocean, surrounded by the island’s unique spirituality.
Tara then attended the International School of Laos. Laos had a more laid-back, traditional way of life. She enjoyed peaceful boat rides along the Mekong River and was captured by the golden temples scattered around Vientiane. The simplicity of life in Laos gave Tara time to reflect and appreciate the slower pace. The people were kind, and Tara formed close bonds with her 1st-grade classmates, spending weekends exploring waterfalls and caves in the countryside.
Malaysia was next, where Tara’s mother taught at Taylor's International School in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia was a beautiful mix of cultures, and Tara adored the colorful festivals. She celebrated Hari Raya with her 2nd-grade friends, tasted traditional satay and nasi lemak, and was fascinated by the blend of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences in the country. During weekends, she and her mom would visit the Batu Caves and sometimes even take short trips to Langkawi or Penang.
In Myanmar, Tara’s mother taught at Yangon Academy International School. Tara was fascinated by the ancient temples of Bagan, with their golden spires glinting in the sunlight. Life in Myanmar was a blend of history and tradition. At school, she joined a service-learning group that worked with local communities, and through that experience, she grew to love Myanmar’s deep culture and resilient spirit. Tara often found herself on the streets of Yangon, wandering the markets and tasting the unique flavors of Burmese cuisine, like mohinga and tea leaf salad.
After Myanmar, Tara and her mother moved to the Philippines, a place of incredible warmth and laughter. At Aguinaldo International School Manila, Tara found the Filipino spirit infectious. People were always smiling, and her classmates from 5th to 6th grade were quick to include her in everything. She learned traditional dances for school events, and karaoke nights with her friends became a weekly tradition. Tara’s mom, who grew up in the Philippines, showed her the beaches of Palawan and the mountains of Baguio. Here, Tara felt the closest to her roots and family.
The next destination was Singapore, a bustling city-state. Life was fast-paced here, and HWA International School was huge. Tara really enjoyed her 7th and 8th grade there. The clean streets and efficient MRT were a stark contrast to the lush greenery of Brunei, but Tara found herself enjoying both the cosmopolitan feel of Singapore and the peaceful walks around Gardens by the Bay.
In Thailand, her 9th and 10th-grade life was vibrant and full of adventure. Tara enrolled at the XCL American School of Bangkok and was immediately taken by the country’s friendliness. The bustling markets, the flavorful food, and the intricate temples gave her a sense of wonder every day. Tara and her mother stayed in a local village and learned how to cook traditional Thai dishes. Thailand’s warm spirit matched its tropical weather, and Tara felt like she could stay there forever.
Finally, they arrived in Vietnam, the last stop on their ASEAN journey. Tara’s mother took a position at Hanoi Academy. Vietnam was a blend of old and new, with its buzzing motorbikes and peaceful rice fields. Tara joined a photography club, capturing the intricate details of daily life in Hanoi—the street vendors, the ancient temples, and the lively markets. She learned to appreciate the delicate flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, from pho to banh mi. By the time she was ready to graduate, she felt a deep connection to the ASEAN region.
Each country had given Tara more than just a new school. From Brunei’s quiet beauty to Vietnam’s rich culture, she had woven herself into the fabric of Southeast Asia. She had friends in every corner, memories tied to every place, and a heart full of stories that stretched across borders. As she stood at the airport, waiting for her flight to university, she realized her adventure was only just beginning.

Nestled at the northern tip of Sumatra, Aceh boasts a rich cultural heritage and a vibrant culinary scene that’s sure to tantalize your taste buds.
The Essence of Aceh Cuisine
Acehnese cuisine is a delightful fusion of indigenous ingredients and spices, influenced by Indian, Arab, and Malay culinary traditions. This blend results in unique flavors that set Acehnese dishes apart from the rest of Indonesia.

Imagine thick yellow noodles swimming in a spicy, aromatic curry broth, topped with your choice of beef or seafood. Whether you prefer it as Mie Aceh Goreng (fried noodles) or Mie Aceh Kuah (noodle soup), this dish is a burst of flavor in every bite. Garnished with crispy fried shallots, fresh lime, and emping (melinjo crackers), it's a meal you won't forget.
Roti Canai
Roti Canai, also known as Roti Cane, is a popular Acehnese flatbread. This flaky, buttery bread is perfect for dipping into savory curry sauces or enjoying on its own. The skillful dough stretching and folding make it crispy on the outside and soft on the inside – a true delight!
Kuah Pliek U
This traditional vegetable curry is made with a blend of local herbs and spices, simmered in a rich coconut milk broth. The addition of pliek u, a fermented coconut paste, gives it a distinctive deep, earthy flavor. It's a hearty and wholesome dish featuring vegetables like eggplant, long beans, and jackfruit.
Ayam Tangkap
Crispy, aromatic chicken marinated in traditional Acehnese spices and deep-fried with pandan leaves, curry leaves, and lemongrass – that's Ayam Tangkap for you. Served with steamed rice and sambal (spicy chili paste), it's a flavorful feast for the senses.
Sie Reuboh
A unique preserved meat dish, Sie Reuboh is made with beef or buffalo, cooked with vinegar, salt, and spices, and then left to marinate for days. The result? A deliciously sour and spicy meat that pairs perfectly with rice and vegetables.
Adding Aceh to Your Bali Tour Packages
