The Jewish Bollywood Star: Esther Abraham
She was India's first female film producer
Esther Abraham was a Jewish Bollywood superstar and the first female film producer in India. She was a proud observant Jew even while shaping modern Indian culture.
Esther was born in Calcutta in 1916 to an Orthodox Jewish family. The Abrahams were Baghdadi Jews who had emigrated from Iraq in the 19th century. In school Esther excelled academically and athletically. She was a talented hockey player with a roomful of trophies. Esther was also an artist who attended Cambridge University after high school and majored in art.
After university, Esther became a kindergarten teacher at a Jewish school in Calcutta, but she yearned to be a performer. Her first job in the entertainment industry was as a dancer for a silent movie theater. Esther’s job was to entertain the audience during a pause in the film while the reel were changed.
Many members of Esther’s family were talented musicians and performers. She went to visit an actress cousin in Bombay who was appearing in a theater production. The director noticed tall, beautiful Esther and gave her a screen test.
Esther did so well on the test that she soon appeared in her first movie, Bhikaran, in 1936. Around this time she was given the screen name Pramila. Audiences fell in love with Pramila and she quickly became one of the most famous actresses in India. She also worked as a model and appeared on many magazine covers. In 1947, at age 31, Esther won the first Miss India contest – while pregnant with her fifth child.
At that time in India, the movie industry was controlled by a handful of extremely wealthy producers who exploited their actors and crew members and paid them only a measly salary. Esther Abraham decided to change that. She defied the studio system by becoming the first female producer of Bollywood feature films. Esther formed her own production company, Silver Productions, and produced sixteen feature films. She treated her cast and crew with respect and paid them well.
Esther starred in 30 films. In addition to being an actress and producer, she did her own stunts and worked as a stunt double for other performers. Esther also designed her own costumes and jewelry for every production.
Famous for her enchantingly beautiful eyes, audiences didn’t know that her eyesight was very poor and she did dance moves by counting the steps. Audiences also were likely unaware that she was Jewish – and probably wouldn’t have cared. Unlike so many countries with Jewish communities, India has no history of antisemitism.
Esther’s daughter Naqi Jahan was crowned Miss India in 1967, and they are the only mother and daughter who both won the title. Her son Haidar Ali is a successful Indian actor and screenwriter. Haidar described his mother: “A woman who was gifted by God with internal power and strength… she magnetized power…. One the home front she kept us together [clenching his fist] like this.”
Esther Abraham appeared in her last film in 2005, at age 90, playing a grandmother in the movie Thaang. She died a few months after its release. Until the end of her long life, Esther remained a practicing Jew. Her funeral was at the Maghen David synagogue, and her son Maurice read Psalms in Hebrew. Esther was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Mumbai.
For entertaining audiences for seventy years, and for being the first female film producer in India, we honor Esther Abraham, aka Pramila, as this week’s Thursday Hero.

268: Laxmikant-Pyarelal // Dosti
Dosti Laxmikant-Pyarelal 1964, Angel
Composing partners Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma worked together for 35 years and, per Hindustan Times, composed about 2,900 songs for 750 different films during that span—a level of productivity basically unfathomable outside of the specific context of the insanely prolific Bollywood studio system. 1966’s Dosti soundtrack was their artistic and commercial breakthrough, and as such it occupies a significant place in Indian music history. I’ve never seen the film, though its cover features two crying boys hugging so it may be up my alley. The Wikipedia synopsis makes it sound like a melodrama without parallel (aside from several hundred others made by Bollywood that same year). The movie opens with a boy’s father dying in an industrial catastrophe, his mother fainting and falling down the stairs (to her death), and then the boy getting disabled in an accident of his own. He then makes friends with a homeless blind boy, and the two chums are then rigorously wedgied by life itself for the next three hours until a happy ending imposes itself.
youtube
Working with lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri (a notable leftist poet), Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s songs are strongly credited with Dosti’s enduring success, and while I’m neither an expert in their oeuvre nor Bollywood music as a whole, I can tell you this is beautiful music any fan of adventurous vintage pop should adore. The songs all strike my ear as happy, but with a tear welling in their eyes. It’s more subtle stuff than I associate with contemporary Bollywood: “Gudiya Kab Tak Na Hasogy” twinkles and minces to a gentle dance rhythm, leaving room for soulful flute and harmonium (or accordion?) solos and the melancholy lilt of a mandolin. Both members of the duo had a strong education in Western and Indian classical music, and these sentimental songs find the sweet spot between the traditions, with vigorous tabla rhythms and droning strings meeting melodies that evoke spaghetti western scores (“Janewalo Zara”) or practically quote “Ode to Joy” (“Rahi Manwa”).
It was the convention at the time for a reliable cadre of vocalists to dub over the singing voices of the lead actors, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal established long-standing relationships with their favourites. Dosti features two of their standbys, with Mohammed Rafi handling five of the six songs on the 10” soundtrack I own, and Lata Mangeshkar taking the other. Both absolute legends on the subcontinent, while Rafi and Mangeshkar were each well into adulthood by the time they recorded these songs they give such naively haloed performances that if you can squint (your ears?) just a little it’s easy to imagine they might have originated from the lips of children.
The scope of my expertise in this area is extremely limited, but if it’s not clear, Dosti gets my highest recommendation. If you should come across a ‘60s record with the Laxmikant-Pyarelal imprimatur at your local used shop, give it a shot.

Comfort movies
Tagged by the adorable @strwbi-laces !
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara: one of my Absolute Favourites of All Time. I will sit down and watch every day if given the chance. It's about the trials of friendship, life, career and self growth, and it's a literal gem.
3 Idiots: also one of the Absolute Favourites of All Time. I love literally everything about this one. It addresses the problems with the colossal expectations of the Indian education system and how it leads to the destruction of the mental health of students.
Taare Zameen Par: I always cry whenever I watch this movie, every time. The third- and last- one of my Absolute Favourites. The highlighting of dyslexia and the way society treats it is so relatable and real; that's what makes me love it so much.
Coco: Yes, the animated movie. There is so much about this movie that I love, it's honestly so amazing. I don't think I need to say much about it.
Bajirao Mastani: it's my comfort film because of the fashion, the set, the songs, etc. Basically, I love it for the artistic direction. My favourite character is Kashibai, obv.
Raazi: Gods I love this one. I've been trying to get the book this was inspired by— Calling Sehmat— for such a long time. I hope I get it this year. The story follows a 19yo girl turned spy for India during the Indo Pak war, and it's so riveting. 10/10 always recommend.
Moana: legit most of the non-Bollywood films on here are gonna be animated lol. But Moana is just so so dear to my heart, and if it gets a sequel, it had better be as awesome as Frozen 2 was, which brings us to..
The Frozen Franchise: all of it. Songs, plot, characters, the effort they put into the animation. Just. All of it.
Faster Fene: this is a Marathi film. A murder mystery/thriller that deals with the corruption in the Education system of India. The main character is just so smart (and he's one of my favourite Marathi actors) and everything comes together so well. In love with this one.
Legally Blonde: I would never, ever leave out the most iconic feminist film of all time. Elle Woods is who I aspire to be. Uhh.. with a little less pink. I have nothing against pink— in fact, I quite like it— it's just that my favourite colour is blue
I don't watch many movies, but yeah, here's my top 10, in no particular order. Tagging my darling, awesome @padfootastic and anyone else who wants to!

Hey Gina!! I was just scrolling thru your blog and all I'm saying is that I totally agree with the anon that said that they don't want H&L to come to India.
I'm Indian too and trust me the objectification and judgement faced by celebrities is crazy here. The homophobia here is absolutely mind blowing too.
Celebrities are treated as if they're just objects for people's entertainment and nothing else. You don't like what a celebrity wears? Fuck them. You don't like that two celebrities wanted their marriage to be private? Fuck them.
The objectification of women here, oh my god. Every single fucking thing they wear is objectified, every single fucking thing they do is faced by judgement.
Once an actress went to her husband's cricket game here, and the team didn't really perform very well. Guess whose fault it was? The actress's.
(Not that the celebrities are all innocent either. A celebrity ran over 5 homeless people sleeping on the street once. One died. The worst thing is that he never really faced any repercussions. And he also poached two blackbucks once.)
Ed Sheeran came here once, as the anon mentioned, and all the Bollywood actors treated him like he was their ticket to fame, and not a real person.
Don't get me wrong, I love my country, but sometimes the people here act rally shitty.
I'd love to see Harry and Louis one day but I really don't want them to experience this shit.
Sorry, I was trying to tell that I don't want them too come here but it soon turned into a rant about my country😅
TL;DR- I love my country but also hate the situation in here and I really don't want the boys to come here. I also wholeheartedly agree with the anon. And also love your blog.
Hi sweetheart. Oh wow. I honestly can’t even imagine how it would be if they went there. It really would be so nice if more artists did live streams so that countries who rarely get tours could experience these shows.

Exploring the vibrant worlds of the Gujarati, Bhojpuri, and Marathi film industries.
Among the oldest and biggest cinema industries around the globe is found in India. A public screening of an Indian movie occurred at the beginning of 1913. It was called Raja Harischandra. Finding someone to play female characters at the time was quite difficult. It has only recently been questioned whether the middle and lower classes still associate acting with a decline in virtue, female chastity, and credibility.
Gujarati Film Industry
Among the important regional and popular film industries in Indian cinema is Gujarati Cinema. The business has reached its best point over the past ten years thanks to sane and competent directors who have won the audiences' high praise. The movies have original stories, excellent acting, beautiful music, and a wide range of genres, including Family, Tragedy, Comedy, Mystery, Sports, Sci-Fi, Historical Drama, Action, and Relationship.
At the 64th National Film Awards, the movie "Wrong Side Raju" won the National Film Award for Best Motion Picture in Gujarati. The next film, "Reva," took up the 66th National Film Award for Best Motion Picture in Gujarati.
The Gujarati film industry's most admirable quality is that it consistently embraces Bollywood stars who are not Gujarati (Bollywood). Amitabh Bachchan, a Bollywood celebrity, and Jaya Bachchan both had cameo appearances in "Carry On Kesar."
The Gujarati film sector has produced numerous films filmed outside of India, demonstrating the sector's rapid expansion. The industry supports artistic filmmaking and its promotion across various media.
More than 8 crore Gujaratis and a global audience have been reached by Gujarati cinema thanks to innovation and art over the years. Gujaratis are wealthy, and the Gujarati movie business will soon reach new heights of development. There are several Gujarati actors in Bollywood as well.
Bhojpuri Film Industry
In recent years, Bhojpuri cinema has seen a significant evolution. This has enticed numerous prominent Bollywood actors to join the Bhojpuri film industry.
Bhojpuri film was fighting for its life and was on the verge of extinction until lately. However, the collaborative effort of the Bhojpuri film industry's creators, directors, and producers brought the sector back to life by turning it profitable once more.
Bhojpuri cinema has established a niche today, and its popularity on the international market has skyrocketed. There is a worldwide audience for Bhojpuri films, not just in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. The Indian diaspora living in Brazil, Fiji, South Africa, Guyana, Suriname, Mozambique, and Trinidad & Tobago enjoys watching Bhojpuri films. To know more about this in detail you can log into our Bhojpuri film industry app.
Marathi Film Industry
The Marathi film industry has continuously produced works of art. The business has developed a reputation for being content-centric and important thanks to movies like Fandry, Court, and Kaasav. A few years ago, the phenomenal box office success of Marathi films like Sairat, Natsamrat, and Lai Bhaari gave the impression that the industry was prosperous. But, the reality of Marathi cinema's box office performance could be better. 2019 witnessed 11 weeks where three or more Marathi films were released on the same day, which is unusual in an industry where even a solo movie struggles to maintain at the box office. This gives these movies no chance at the box office.
The Marathi movie business has its work cut out for it as the pandemic effect on the box office fades over time, and the box office throughout languages starts to rebound. It must address some fundamental structural issues for more sustained success at the box office. To know more about this in detail, you can log into our Marathi film industry app.
Bollywood is acknowledged as having the biggest global film production sector. In all, 2961 films were made in India, including 1602 features in 2012. India offers some of the lowest prices in the planet for movie tickets.

Entrepreneur and acclaimed producer Imtiaz Khatri has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in the Indian Entertainment Business. Dynamic in his contributions to Bollywood, impassioned about cinema, and a dedicated philanthropic worker, the name Imtiaz Khatri has become synonymous with both artistic and social accomplishment. This enterprising young man, born on September 9, 1989, in Mumbai, has skilfully balanced his entrepreneurial spirit with an intrinsic love for film, offering the industry with newer insights while taking time out for causes close to his heart.
Early Life and Entry into Cinema
Imtiaz Khatri’s journey into the world of cinema began at a young age. Raised in a family where creativity and ambition were encouraged, he developed an early interest in film. His father, Nizar Khatri, has been a major influence in his life, instilling in him the values of hard work and vision. Imtiaz Khatri completed his schooling at St. Theresa’s High School in Bandra before earning his degree from the University of Mumbai in 2004.
Imtiaz was always fascinated by movies, but he wished to enter the entertainment industry to make films that would strike a chord with the masses on a deep emotional level. He was firm about making entry into this industry as an active player, not a viewer, a producer who would push the boundaries and tell new stories. He initially started off as a backstage player in the industry, though his entrepreneurial approach distinguished him and helped him create a niche for himself in Bollywood.
Establishing VVIP Universal Entertainment
Imtiaz Khatri entered the world of film production in the year 2017 by launching his production company, VVIP Universal Entertainment. The aim was vivid-to introduce fresh meaningful cinema to the Indian audience while keeping a high focus on quality. In no time, VVIP Universal Entertainment earned its fine reputation for producing films combining art and commerce.
The company’s first major project was the Marathi film Hrudayantar (2017), a romantic drama directed by Vikram Phadnis. The film received widespread acclaim for its emotional depth, and Khatri’s involvement in the production process helped elevate its success. Hrudayantar starred actors Subodh Bhave and Mukta Barve and featured a special cameo by Bollywood super star Hrithik Roshan. Imtiaz Khatri’s efforts as a producer were instrumental in the film’s positive reception, which resonated with both critics and audiences alike.
Success with Hrudayantar confirmed his position as a producer who could effectively balance both critical and box-office successes. VVIP Universal Entertainment, under Imtiaz Khatri, has concentrated on producing films with convincing narratives and entertaining performances, marking an identity for itself in the competitive Bollywood.
Expansion into Bollywood with Innovative Projects
Ever since Hrudayantar, Imtiaz Khatri continued to expand his footprint in Bollywood with a growing body of works that exhibit a commitment to quality filmmaking. He focuses not only on producing mainstream films but also supports independent films, which may never find an outlet to wide audiences. Khatri's production house works in tandem with talented directors and fresh faces, in the process helping to groom the next generation of filmmakers and actors.
Imtiaz Khatri’s mantra as a producer is to choose stories that are innovative yet relevant and ensure the content connects with the different strata. Khatri says that, whether for commerce or art, he believes in filmmaking that makes a difference-in stories that linger long after one has left the cinema.
The fact that Imtiaz Khatri has been able to choose the right projects has not gone unnoticed in the film fraternity. He has developed an eye for quality and is more often than not seen in tandem with directors that show enthusiasm for telling a story. Having invested in the creative and business aspects of filmmaking, Khatri ensures that each project gets the required attention from pre-production to its release.
A Champion of New Talent
Along with production, Imtiaz Khatri is also a strong propagator of new and fresh talent in the entertainment world. Under the banner VVIP Universal Entertainment, he has given opportunities to fresh faces by offering new actors, writers, and directors a platform to showcase their skills. Through this kind of promotion, Khatri plays a major role in giving a face to the next generation of filmmakers in Bollywood.
This goes beyond the sets of films as, quite often, Imtiaz works with budding filmmakers by providing guidance, resources, and mentorship necessary to make it big in a highly competitive industry. In talent development, his method combines nurturing the creative powers of upcoming stars along with professional growth, and so far, it has clicked wonderfully to bring in the next wave of Bollywood talent.
Philanthropy: Cancer Patients and Social Causes
Despite his successful venture in film production, Imtiaz Khatri has remained humble and conscious about giving back to society. His philanthropic works largely engage in the service of cancer patients, which he has been passionate about for many years. Of his most noted charity initiatives is working with the Celebrity Cricket Team participating in the INK Cricket Blast tournament. This event, unique in kind, offers support for cancer treatment through the money it raises from the evening.
The celebrity tournament is a congregation of who's who in the entertainment world, united for one cause of awareness and fundraising for cancer patients. To that aspect, this initiative by Imtiaz Khatri does prove his commitment to leveraging influence in the entertainment world for social change. Through association with a cause that has touched the lives of millions, Imtiaz Khatri is helping raise awareness about just how essential cancer treatment is while making tangible differences in the lives of those fighting the disease.
Besides cancer awareness, Imtiaz extends his support to other philanthropic projects for healthcare, education, and welfare improvement of the underprivileged in India. His charity basically testifies to the fact that he believes true success is not correctly estimated by professional achievements but by the positive impact one can bring about in society.
Vision for the Future
According to Imtiaz Khatri, the future still retains its commitment to professional success coupled with social commitment. As he sees his vision for the future, he hopes to produce such works in the field of cinema that have dared conventional narratives and pushed the creative envelope. He strives to make films which will entertain, educate, inspire, and leave an indelible mark on the culture. His philanthropic work will also always be growing to support causes close to his heart, which include health and education. This way, Imtiaz also hopes to be able to expand his work with charities as a force for good, mirroring any successes that may come in the world of entertainment.
Conclusion
The sojourn of Imtiaz Khatri in the world of entertainment testifies to his passion, vision, and commitment to both creativity and social change. As a producer, he has brought new meaning to impactful filmmaking: supporting innovative projects while providing opportunities for emerging talent. Further still, philanthropy carried out by him testifies to his belief that success is not just about personal achievement but rather about the effort one puts into improving others' lives using one's platform.
Imtiaz Khatri is one of Bollywood's leading pioneers and definitely has a very bright future ahead in both cinema and philanthropy. The Evolution of Indian Music Through Legends
The Indian music industry is a rich tapestry of melodies and rhythms that have evolved over centuries, shaped by the genius of legendary artists. From the haunting strains of classical ragas to the pulsating beats of contemporary hits, the journey of Indian music is a story of transformation and innovation. Legends such as A.R. Rahman, Ilaiyaraaja, Bhimsen Joshi, and others have played pivotal roles in bridging the gap between tradition and modernity, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.
The Roots: Classical Foundations
Indian music has its roots deeply embedded in classical traditions that date back thousands of years. The structured framework of Hindustani and Carnatic music laid the foundation for all subsequent genres. Legends like Pandit Ravi Shankar, who took the sitar to global audiences, and M.S. Subbulakshmi, whose devotional renditions captivated millions, are pivotal figures in this era. Their mastery of classical techniques combined with their innovative approaches set a high standard for musicians across generations.
The Golden Era of Film Music
The mid-20th century marked a turning point for Indian music with the rise of film music as a dominant force. Bollywood became a melting pot where classical influences merged with folk and Western styles to create a unique soundscape. Legendary composers like R.D. Burman, Naushad, and Madan Mohan redefined music with their memorable scores.
The playback singing legends of this era, such as Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, became household names. Their ability to convey emotion through their voices brought depth to cinematic storytelling. Lata's ethereal voice captured love, loss, and longing, while Kishore's versatility ranged from soulful ballads to peppy numbers.
Folk Meets Modernity
India's diverse cultural fabric is reflected in its folk music, which has been a source of inspiration for many legendary artists. Bhupen Hazarika, known as the "Bard of Brahmaputra," blended Assamese folk music with global influences, creating timeless compositions. Similarly, Gurdas Maan's Punjabi folk songs carry the essence of rural life while addressing contemporary issues.
The integration of folk elements into mainstream music became a hallmark of legendary composers like Ilaiyaraaja, whose work seamlessly wove Tamil folk traditions with orchestral arrangements. This synthesis not only preserved India's rich heritage but also brought it to the forefront of popular music.
The Global Ambassadors
The 20th century also saw Indian musicians making their mark on the international stage. Pandit Ravi Shankar’s collaborations with The Beatles introduced Indian classical music to the West, sparking a wave of global interest. Zakir Hussain, with his unparalleled tabla skills, furthered this legacy by collaborating with artists across genres, from jazz to world music.
A.R. Rahman emerged as a modern-day global ambassador for Indian music. With his Oscar-winning compositions for Slumdog Millionaire and a string of successful collaborations, Rahman brought Indian music to international acclaim. His ability to blend classical ragas with electronic music, rock, and global influences has redefined the industry.
The Regional Powerhouses
While Bollywood often dominates discussions, regional music industries across India have produced legends who have significantly contributed to the evolution of Indian music. Ilaiyaraaja, often referred to as the "Mozart of Madras," revolutionized Tamil cinema music with his intricate compositions and pioneering use of technology. His music transcends language barriers, resonating with audiences worldwide.
In the realm of Kannada music, Dr. Rajkumar's contributions as a singer and actor are legendary. Similarly, Manna Dey's Bengali compositions and Yesudas's work in Malayalam and other South Indian languages showcase the richness of regional music traditions.
Contemporary Innovators
As the digital age dawned, Indian music underwent another transformation. New legends emerged, embracing technology and global trends while staying rooted in their heritage. Shreya Ghoshal and Arijit Singh are two such icons, whose versatility and emotive singing have made them the voices of a new generation.
Amit Trivedi, known for his innovative approach to film scores, has carved a niche by blending Indian and Western styles. His work in films like Dev.D and Queen demonstrates how modern legends are pushing boundaries, keeping Indian music fresh and relevant.
Bridging Generations
One of the hallmarks of Indian music legends is their ability to bridge generations. Artists like A.R. Rahman and Lata Mangeshkar have collaborated with younger musicians, fostering an exchange of ideas and ensuring the continuity of their legacies. Platforms like Coke Studio India and MTV Unplugged have also played a crucial role in this evolution, providing a stage for traditional and contemporary musicians to collaborate.
The Impact of Technology
The advent of streaming platforms and digital technology has significantly influenced the music industry. Legends of the past are now accessible to a global audience, and their timeless works continue to inspire budding musicians. The digitization of archives ensures that the contributions of legends like Bhimsen Joshi, R.D. Burman, and others remain relevant for future generations.
Conclusion: A Legacy of Innovation
The evolution of Indian music is a testament to the vision and creativity of its legends. From the soulful strains of Bhimsen Joshi’s classical renditions to the groundbreaking compositions of A.R. Rahman, these artists have not only preserved India's musical heritage but also propelled it into the future. As the industry continues to evolve, the influence of these legends serves as a guiding light, ensuring that Indian music remains a vibrant and dynamic force on the global stage.
Their legacy reminds us that innovation and tradition are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary forces that drive artistic excellence. With each generation building on the foundations laid by these legends, the journey of Indian music promises to be as inspiring and transformative as its storied past.
