In 39th match of their career, Nadal took early 3-1 lead over Federer. Swiss champion broke back immediately with some aggressive brand of tennis. Thiem took 4-2 lead in 3rd set before Serbian great broke back. Thiem single handed backhand helped him control the ball better in breezy conditions. Djokovic struggled with double handed backhand in this breeze conditions. Thiem broke Djokovic again to win the 3rd set 7-5. It looked like Thiem would win in 4 sets but Djokovic levelled the match by winning it 7-5. Thiem took 4-1 lead in final set but Djokovic broke back to level the match.It looked like he would take control and win the match but Thiem broke Djokovic in 12th game to win the set 7-5 and the match. This has been great to see Thiem hold his nerve on big stage. He has reached SF twice and finals twice in last 4 years. Can he go one up and beat Nadal in finals? That would definitely  be start of new era !! In finals, Thiem started off brilliantly. He even unsettled Nadal’s serves to move ahead 3-2. Nadal fought back like a champion to level the set and won next 3 games to win it. In 7th game, Thiem had his chances but Nadal held nerve in a 100 odd minute game. That took steam of Thiem. He was tired after playing long SF. He kept his nerve in 2nd set. He could find any inroads in Nadal’s serve early on but his serve game was getting better. In 12th game, Thiem showed class in breaking Nadal. Match was on. Thiem had to start 3rd set well but he won only 1 of first 13 points as Nadal took double break. He zoomed ahead to win it 6-1. He won first 2 games of 4th set too.  Thiem had chance to break back in 3rd game but Nadal showed his class once again. That was literally end of Thiem’s resistance.  Nadal had break points in 4th game to make it 4-0 but Thiem finally found some touch back to hold serve. Nadal eventually won it 6-1. This was Nadal’s 18th slam and 12th French open. He has completed hat-trick of hat-tricks in French open (won 3 times French open consecutively 3 times ). What a legend !!! In sport , facing Nadal in French open in best of 5 sets should the most difficult hurdle to cross.  If there is a record which might never be broken, Nadal’s tally of 12 wins in French open could be at the top of the list.  If there is one player who deserves to win a slam in current gen it is Thiem in French open. He has been exceptional this week and should augur well for the future.  In ladies finals, Australia’s Barty outclassed Vondrousova 6-1 6-3 to win maiden slam. She became first Australian winner in French open since Maragret Court in 1973.

Forgotten Domestic Cricketers XI

The Sheffield Shield has been bolstered recently with an influx of Australian representative players bringing renewed interest into the competition.

The introduction of T20 cricket, along with other factors, saw the public’s interest in the domestic four day competition dwindle throughout the mid 2000’s.

For many, the Sheffield Shield will always be the ‘Pura Milk Cup’ where aspiring young cricketers would test themselves against seasoned and established veterans.

It was state vs state and the competition that was used as a measuring stick for players, selectors and public to judge if you had earned the right to wear the baggy green or not.

It was where we formed the long held belief that the Australian selectors had a bias toward NSW players, a dig that simply doesn’t resonate with the younger generation of cricket fans today.

In a hope to revitalize, remember and recall those important cricketers of our youth we give you the Forgotten Domestic Cricketers XI.

1. Michael Di Venuto

State: Tasmania

First Class Batting Average: 45.90

Michael Di Venuto is a name that resonates with many cricketing fans of the 90s especially those from the Apple Isle.

Born in another era, he would have had a long and successful career in the baggy green but alas Di Venuto still brought plenty of joy to those that saw him play.

2. Jamie Cox

State: Tasmania

First Class Batting Average: 42.69

Jamie Cox opened the batting plenty of times with our first selection in this Forgotten Domestic Cricketers XI in what was a golden era of Tasmanian cricket.

Cox hit 10,821 in the Sheffield Shield which is the second most of any batsman since 1980 (behind Darren Lehmann) which included 30 cnturies.

Just like Di Venuto he did not play a single Test Match for his country.

He is currently the General Manager of Football Performance at the St Kilda Football Club.

3. Ryan Campbell (WK)

State: Western Australia

First Class Batting Average: 36.41

Ryan Campbell was an unorthodox batsman who was before his time with his ability to create shots to beat the field.

There were many kids attempting this crazy new ramp shot that they had seen Campbell produce during his innings and there is no doubt that he had an impact on the way the game is played today.

It is a real shame that T20 cricket was not invented while he was playing although he did represent Hong Kong at the 2016 World T20 at the age of 44.

4. Martin Love

State: Queensland

First Class Batting Average: 49.57

Martin Love had a long and successful career in the Sheffield Shield including being a part of the Invincibulls team that delivered Queensland their first Shield victory in 1994/95.

He became a hero in the Sunshine State when he made 146 in the final and despite his five Test Matches for his country we are making the decision that this is his biggest achievement.

He scored 219* in his final Test Match for Australia and 109* in his final Shield game for Queensland.

5. Richard Chee Quee

State: New South Wales

First Class Batting Average: 28.58

Richard Chee Quee doesn’t have the credentials of a few others on this list in terms of talent but the nostalgia is through the roof and he gets a spot in the middle order.

He managed one century and six 50s but is possibly better known for being a part of Brett Lee’s rock band ‘Six and Out’.

6. James Brayshaw

State: Western Australia and South Australia

First Class Batting Average: 42.53

We now know him as a cricket and Aussie Rules commentator as well as the former Chairman of the North Melbourne Football Club but James Brayshaw was once a pretty handy cricketer.

He won the Shield twice as a player for two different states in 87/88 for W.A and 95/96 for S.A.

7. Ashley Nofke

State: Queensland

First Class Batting Average: 26.77

First Class Bowling Average: 28.58

Ashley Nofke played for the Bulls from 1998-2009 and was a more than handy bowling all rounder.

He played a single ODI for his country in 2008 against India and made the Aussie squad that went to England for the 2001 Ashes series however he was injured in the field in the final tour game and never received a baggy green.

He made a diamond duck in his only T20 International as well as 3/18.

8. Brad McNamara

State: NSW

First Class Batting Average: 27.78

First Class Bowling Average: 26.82

In an era where just about every cricketer that donned the light blue cap in Shield cricket exchanged it for a baggy green one, Brad McNamara plugged away for his state in their absence.

Plenty of summers were spent watching Brad McNamara run in off a very modest run up to trouble batsman with his change of pace and accuracy.

He still holds the Blues record 10th wicket partnership of 138 that he made with Phil Alley during the 1999/00 season.

He was the best man at Steve Waugh’s wedding and is the second member of this particular squad to play in the band ‘Six and Out’.

9. David Saker

State: Victoria

First Class Batting Average: 19.77

First Class Bowling Average: 30.10

David Saker was a popular state cricketer in the late 90s and early 00s playing the majority of his career with the Victorian Bushrangers.

Very handy with the ball but also managed four half centuries and even opened the batting at times in limited overs games.

He also bowled one of the most vicious deliveries of all time in Hobart during the 2001/02 season.

10. Adam Dale

State: Queensland

First Class Batting Average: 15.05

First Class Bowling Average: 20.75

Adam Dale was an extremely versatile and difficult medium pace swing bowler for the Queensland Bulls from 1995 to 2003.

He played 15 ODI and two Tests for his country.

He also took the greatest catch in the history of cricket.

11. Jo Angel

State: Western Australia

First Class Batting Average: 12.26

First Class Bowling Average: 25.10

Jo Angel was a staple in the Western Australia bowling attack for the majority of the 1990s and early 00s finishing his career with a record 419 Sheffield Shield wickets for Western Australia.

He played four Test Matches for Australia and on debut he managed to hit Desmond Haynes in the face with a short ball forcing him to retire hurt.

Wasn’t bad at a good ol fashion send off either.

Anderson broke Isner in 3rd to take 4-3 lead. Isner broke back immediately. 3rd set also went to tiebreakers. Both players had chances but it was 33rd year old American who won it 11-9. Anderson broke Isner in 4th set early and went onto win 6-4. Final set was battle of nerves. But both hardly showed any. Aces came and gone, games came and gone and winners came and gone. Both had chances but served themselves out of trouble. It needed 50 games to decide final set. Anderson won it 26-24. Match lasted 6 hours 36 min. It was 2nd longest match and longest in Wimbledon SF. Isner featured in longest match too and he won agsinst Mahut 70-68. Hearbreak for Isner and ecstasy for Anderson. He has reached his 2nd slam final in last 10 months. This match had 102 aces, 247 winners and a mammoth 568 points. Time has come for Wimbledon to add tiebreaker in final set. If not at 6-6, then move to 10-10 or 12-12.

If match was all about booming serves, 2nd match was all winners from all angles, jaw dropping drop shots and mouthwatering long rallies. Djokovic was hardly troubled in first set which he won 6-4. Nadal broke Djokovic in 3rd game of 2nd set, Djokovic bounced back which was followed by Nadal breaking again. Nadal won the set 6-3. His serve was getting better. 3rd set didn’t have any breaks and went to tie breaker. Nadal had 3 set points but it was Djokovic who won it 11-9. Match was suspended at this point as time limit of 11PM UK time was reached. Nadal had to bounce back early on Saturday and he did. He struggled to hold serve in first game but broke Djokovic next game. He eventually won the set 6-3. Final set was exhilarating stuff. Djokovic was serving ahead which helped him. Nadal had chance in 9th game and 15th game to break as Djokovic was 15-40 in both the games. But Djokovic found his first serve these occasions to bail him out. Nadal gave it all but Djokovic had answers. Djokovic had 0-30 situation in 2 games vs Nadal too. He even had match point in 16th game. But Nadal held on. It came down to 18th game when Djokovic broke Nadal to love to reach Wimbledon final. It was epic match. Nadal played champion stuff but it was heartening to see Djokovic back at his best. For the first time since 2017 US open, slam final will not feature Nadal or Federer. Serena’s serve was poor again. Kerber broke Serena in 6th game to take 4-2 lead. She served for the championship at 5-3.  She won it 6-3 to grab her 3rd slam and 3rd different slam. She won Australian open and US open in 2016. She had beaten Serna in 2016 Australian open finals too. Only Venus and Henin has beaten Serena more than once in slam finals.  It was a bad day for Serena but she is a true inspiration and would be a force to reckon with in US open.

In 2nd ODI vs England, it was familiar tale. Bairstow and Roy made merry in first 10 overs.
