[ad_1] Sumit Antil and Swapnil Kusale’s medals For any athlete competing in an Olympic or Paralympic sport, the ultimate goal is to win a medal at the highest level. The Olympic or Paralympic medal becomes their most cherished possession once they achieve that feat. Ahead of the Paris 2024 Games, there was significant excitement surrounding the medals, as the central metal piece of each medal featured a fragment of the iconic Eiffel Tower. Athletes would not only be winning a medal, but also a unique piece of the Eiffel Tower for themselves. For a country like India, Olympic medals hold even more value. With limited success on the global stage, those who win medals are celebrated like superstars — and rightfully so. However, over the past two days, the news and social media have been flooded with reports that the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic medals are starting to deteriorate, with more than 100 athletes already sending their medals to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for replacement. One of those athletes is Manu Bhaker, who made history by winning two medals for India in a single Games. Team USA skateboarder Nyjah Huston also shared on social media that his bronze medal had already shown signs of wear, saying it “looks like it went to war and back”, with even the front beginning to chip, all while the Games were still ongoing. Months after the Games, other athletes have also revealed the condition of their medals. French swimmers Clément Secchi and Yohann Ndoye-Brouard have both shared images of their medals, with Secchi’s gold looking like “crocodile skin”, and Ndoye-Brouard’s bronze showing significant deterioration. When speaking to Swapnil Kusale, we found that he had experienced the same issue. He said, “One week into our return from Paris, the shine started to wear off.” The condition has only worsened since. “If you look at it now, only bits of the shine coating are left, and it looks bad,” added Kusale. “Yes! I’ll send it back for replacement.” Danish badminton player Viktor Axelsen also shared a photo of his gold medal from Paris 2024, comparing it to his Tokyo 2020 gold. He noted that the older medal was much shinier in appearance. To further understand the issue, RevSportz spoke with Sumit Antil, who won back-to-back gold medals at the Paralympics — Tokyo and Paris. He expressed his frustration, saying, “I would want to send it for replacement as well.” Antil, like many other athletes, put in years of hard work to earn this prestigious medal and is understandably upset that its condition has deteriorated so quickly. “It feels bad that such a big accolade’s colour is fading away,” he said. “Even if the Tokyo medal’s shine is now less with time, it’s still in a better condition than the Paris one.” The Monnaie de Paris, the mint responsible for producing these medals, has been grappling with this issue for at least 15 months before the start of the Games. According to reports, one of their major clients, the Chinese telecom giant Huawei, returned a batch of 12,000 medals due to the same problem, as reported by the French daily La Lettre. It Is believed that the deterioration is due to the absence of a varnish component, chromium trioxide, which was banned by European authorities. The replacement material used has not been adequately tested. Currently, a Lyon-based industry expert is assisting the Mint in finding a sustainable solution and working on the replacement process for the Olympic medals. Regardless of the cause, the handling of this situation by the organisers should have been more efficient. Athletes devote years of their lives to reaching the pinnacle of their sport, and their medals, which represent that hard work, should be synonymous with the respect and care they deserve. India’s para-athletes made history at the Paris Paralympics 2024, winning 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. This remarkable performance exceeded their pre-set target of 25 medals and showcased India’s growing prowess across various sports such as athletics, badminton, shooting, archery, and judo. Indian athletes secured medals every day from Day 2 to Day 10, underscoring the country’s commitment to excellence.
From just 12 medals in the first 11 editions of the Paralympics to an impressive 48 medals in the last two, India’s para-athletes have come a long way. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India sent a record 54 athletes and returned with 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes, setting high expectations for the Paris Games. In Paris, the Indian contingent expanded to 84 athletes, setting an ambitious target of 25 medals.
Highlights of India’s Medal-Winning Journey
India’s first medal came from Avani Lekhara, who successfully defended her title in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1, winning gold. Lekhara’s win marked the first time an Indian woman athlete won multiple medals at the Paralympics. On the same day, Mona Agarwal secured a bronze in the same event, while Manish Narwal earned a silver in men’s 10m air pistol SH1, and sprinter Preethi Pal won a bronze in women’s 100m – T35.
Day 5 to Day 7 of the competition was a golden period for India, with 17 medals won in just three days. The surge began with a silver in men’s discus throw – F56 by Yogesh Kathuniya, followed by gold for Nitesh Kumar in men’s singles SL3 badminton. Badminton continued to bring success with four additional medals, including silvers for Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas LY and bronzes for Manisha Ramadass and Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivam.
The athletics events continued to deliver medals, with Sumit Antil winning gold in the men’s javelin throw – F64 and the archers securing a bronze in the mixed team compound open event. On Day 6, India experienced another surge in medals with five podium finishes in athletics, including a gold-silver finish for Dharambir and Pranav Soorma in the men’s club throw – F51. Archer Harvinder Singh also made history by winning India’s first archery gold at the Paralympics.
India’s Historic Medal Haul
India set a new record by winning its 25th medal with a bronze in men’s -60kg J1 judo by Kapil Parmar. High jumper Praveen Kumar won India’s sixth gold in the men’s T64 final, and Hokato Hotozhe Sema earned a bronze in men’s shot put – F57. Navdeep Singh added a seventh gold with his victory in the men’s javelin throw – F41, and Simran earned bronze in the women’s 200m – T12. With another gold and a bronze on the final day, India concluded its best-ever Paralympics campaign with seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals.

India Ends Paris Paralympics 2024 With 29 Medals. Pakistan, China Got…
The Paris Paralympic Games 2024 concluded for India on Sunday, with Pooja Ojha the final athlete in action. Ojha failed to qualify for the women's kayak 200m final and bowed out of the competition. As a result, India's medals tally at the Paris Paralympics ended at 29 -- seven golds, nine silvers and 13 bronze, making it the most rewarded campaign for the country. Courtesy of the 29 medals, India stood at the 18th position in the points table. Pakistan, who were also competing win the event, ended the campaign joint-bottom at the 79th position, with just a solitary bronze to its name.
Tumblr media
India did very well in the 2024 campaign, beating top nations like Switzerland, Belgium, South Korea, Turkey, Argentina, etc. to finish the Paris Para Games among the top 20 countries in the world
In comparison to India, the traditional heavyweights at the Paralympic Games -- China, Great Britain, USA, Italy, etc. did very well gain, finishing among the top 10 nations. India, having shown significant progression in Paris, would be keen to produce an even better show in the 2028 LA Para Games.
On Saturday, India earned its 29th and final medal of the Paris Paralympic Games through Navdeep Singh who clinched gold medal in men's javelin throw F41 classification.
Navdeep, who competes in the classification meant for athletes of short stature, originally ended with a silver after he upstaged world record holder Sun Pengxiang of China with a 47.32m throw.
However, that was upgraded to an unprecedented gold after Iran's Sadegh Beit Sayah was disqualified for repeatedly displaying an objectionable flag. Pengxiang (44.72m) finished with a silver.
Sayah had managed to nose ahead of the field with a new Paralympic record of 47.64m in his penultimate throw but lost the medal owing to his antics.
The International Paralympic Committee rules bar athletes from making any political gestures at the event and Sayah was thrown out of the final results for unsporting/improper conduct.
At the same venue, Simran, accompanied by her guide Abhay Singh, clocked an impressive personal best of 24.75sec to finish with a bronze in the women's 200m (T12) event.
The 24-year-old from Delhi, who was found to be visually impaired at the time of her premature birth, is the reigning world champion in this event. She had finished fourth in the 100m competition of the ongoing Games and Saturday's medal helped her redeem her campaign.
Track-and-field has contributed 17 medals to this tally, four of them gold. The country is placed 15th in the overall standings, led by China with a whopping 208 medals, including 90 gold.
For Navdeep, the gold makes up for the fourth-place heartbreak he endured in the Tokyo Games.
An inspector in the Income Tax Department, Navdeep has medalled five times at the national level since taking to the sport in 2017. He won a bronze in the para-world championships earlier this year.
Simran, on the other hand, won two silver medals at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou last year and secured three gold medals in the 100m, 200m, and long jump at the inaugural Khelo India Para Games last December.

Tumblr media
Khilari, जो shot put के world champion हैं, ने पहली बार यह रिकॉर्ड Japan में हुए World Para-Athletics Championships में gold जीतते समय बनाया था। Sharad Kumar और Mariyappan Thangavelu ने men's high jump T63 में क्रमशः silver और bronze medals जीते, जबकि Ajeet Singh और Sundar Singh Gurjar ने javelin throw F46 final में दूसरे और तीसरे स्थान पर कब्जा किया। [ad_1] Yogesh Kathuniya with his Paris Paralympics 2024 Silver medal (PC: Rohan Chowdhury) The Delhi High Court has directed the selection committee for the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award to reassess the nomination of Paralympian Yogesh Kathuniya. This decision comes after concerns were raised regarding his exclusion from the final list of awardees despite his remarkable achievements in para-athletics. Yogesh Kathuniya, a Paralympic discus thrower, has represented India on the international stage and brought glory to the nation with his stellar performances. Notably, he clinched a silver medal at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 and has consistently been a top contender in his sport. The court emphasised the importance of fairness and inclusivity in recognising athletes who have displayed exceptional dedication and skill. It noted that the process for selecting awardees must be transparent and account for all eligible candidates’ contributions. This directive follows a petition filed on behalf of Kathuniya, which argued that his accomplishments deserved recognition at the highest level. The plea pointed out that overlooking such an athlete would send the wrong message about inclusivity and support for para-athletes in the country. The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna is India’s highest sporting honor, awarded annually to athletes who have demonstrated extraordinary performances at the international level. The High Court’s intervention underlines the growing acknowledgment of the need to honour para-athletes on par with their able-bodied counterparts. The court has asked the selection committee to reconsider Kathuniya’s case and provide a detailed justification for their final decision. This move has sparked discussions within the sports community about the need for more equitable recognition of all athletes, regardless of physical challenges. The outcome of this reassessment will be closely monitored by sports enthusiasts and advocates for para-sports across the country.
