Images Cinema- A small theater with a big cause
Images Cinema is an independent movie theater located in Williamstown, MA of the Berkshires. Images Cinema is the “only year-round nonprofit, independent theater in the Berkshires area.” The theater first opened on November 30, 1916, and was first called the Walden Theater. The Walden theater boasted a 400 seat venue, quickly becoming a cultural hubspot and emblem of the community. From the silent films of the 1920′s to the romanticized true crime detectives of the 1940′s to the Western’s of the 1950′s, Images Cinema prides itself on showcasing an incredible plethora of film content of the globe. Images are further regarded as a “permanent film festival” by the local Berkshire Eagle.
Images also offer the chance to volunteer to work at the theater doing housekeeping, selling food and drink, and special event set up.
Unlike many of its competitors, Images Cinema has survived after facing many historical and cultural barriers. Images Cinema understands the hardships of independent cinema amongst an industry swarmed by the multiplexes. Without the prestige or wealth of many larger distribution companies, it is much more difficult for small-town independent theaters to obtain films. Aside from the battle with large well-known distribution sites, Images Cinema also discusses its competition with the home video, television, and internet industries, yet stresses its mission of “allowing movie-goers and the chance to experience the very best in the art of film, while exploring film as an art form, educational tool, and source of entertainment.”
Images Cinema provides a wide selection of foreign, classic, and independent films all year and stands as one of the last few single-screen independent theaters running. More specific types of films the theater focuses on are contemporary movies and documentaries, art and international films. Images Cinema showcases a wide variety of Independent cinema, rather than focusing on one subsection.
Due to the extent of the COVID-19 pandemic, Images Cinema is currently closed to the general public. To offset the loss of funding and to keep the theaters alive, Images Cinema offers its virtual cinema library. On their website, the theater provides a link to their own streaming site, where site visitors can rent the film and watch it directly from their TV or computer at home. All rental profits go to benefitting the organization while closed to the public. These featured films also incorporate brand new independent releases. Rental costs range from $12 to $15 for non-members and a reduced price for members. Rental dates last a whole week after purchase and are also located on a calendar to access. Featured films currently available include The Man Who Sold His Skin (2020), Oscar Nominated film shorts, and Shiva Baby (2021).
The theater also has its own online store, where visitors can purchase totes, shirts, and gift cards. Home delivery is an option based on location, and mail delivery is factored in too. Actual donations are also encouraged to support the theater as well.
Images also offer private theater rental space where quarantine pod groups of up to 20 people can watch films safely but together. The venue offers concessions, and members of the theater receive $75 off their rental cost.
Before the strike of COVID-19, Images Cinema offered Red Carpet Parties, movies under the stars, and free outdoor movies In the Summer. The theater also leads free events, often collaborating with Willams College to delve deeper into more niche topics.

These are the written scripts from the two skits Lisa Carver had our group perform on the high elevated karaoke stage at Peter D's last night. The tick marks are next to the parts I played: the detective in the Weremonkey skit, and the killer dentist's brother in The Killer Dentist script. Now I believe I've had an epiphany. Lisa Carver needs to be discovered by indy Hollywood -- some smart deep-pocketed producer should snatch her up to produce a 90s' style version of American Graffiti! #lisacarver #iloveart #indyhollywood #independenttheater #acting #peterds #modernfilmmaking (at Peter D's) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzWEuYygQIk/?igshid=redvo8yyrn2x
