The Inca Trail isn’t just a hike; it’s a journey through history. The trail follows ancient pathways laid by the Incas centuries ago, connecting sacred sites, settlements, and agricultural terraces. As you walk these historic paths, you’ll be immersed in the ingenuity of Incan engineering and the rich cultural heritage of Peru.
The trail is dotted with archaeological sites like Wiñay Wayna and Runkurakay, where you can pause to marvel at ancient stonework and imagine life during the Inca Empire. Each step feels like a connection to the past, adding depth and meaning to your adventure.
Tumblr media
Spectacular Natural Beauty at Every Turn
The Inca Trail offers some of the most stunning natural scenery in South America. Hikers pass through diverse ecosystems, each with its unique beauty. As you ascend, the terrain shifts to misty cloud forests filled with exotic orchids, moss-covered trees, and colorful birds.
Reaching Dead Woman’s Pass, the trail’s highest point at 13,828 feet, offers breathtaking panoramic views of snow-capped mountains and deep valleys. The constantly changing landscapes keep the trek exciting and visually captivating, ensuring every day feels like a new adventure.
A Test of Endurance and Resilience
The Inca Trail is as physically challenging as it is rewarding, making it a true adventure for those seeking to push their limits. The trek involves steep ascents and descents, narrow pathways, and high altitudes, requiring a reasonable fitness level and mental determination.
However, the sense of accomplishment when you conquer each section of the trail is unmatched. The camaraderie with fellow hikers and the support of experienced guides add to the experience, making even the most demanding stretches enjoyable.

The Grand Finale: Sunrise at Machu Picchu
The highlight of the Inca Trail is undoubtedly reaching Machu Picchu. The Inca Trail - Parte Dos
Day 3 was only 6 miles but felt loooong as it incorporated over 3,000 steps downward. When we began, the clouds were laying between the mountains and rapidly moving. Just before lunch, we climbed up to the beautiful Inca site of Phuyupatamarca which aptly translates to "Village in the Clouds".
Tumblr media
Again, we had a lovely 3 course lunch, adorned with animal food-based replicas. We took a brief tarp nap before continuing down. At one point, the rain began and we became poncho people. Luckily, the rain let up just in time for us to arrive at the Ruins of Intipata. Each Inca site we visited was increasingly more spectacular.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On our way from Intipata to our campsite we were greeted by a few trail llamas. At camp, the chef surprised us with a birthday cake he made on the trail for Vale! We had our last well-made camp dinner before the goodbye ceremony where we thanked and tipped our porters or "bebeees".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before we knew it, the day we'd all been hiking for had arrived. We had a brutal 3 AM wakeup call so we could get to the checkpoint before the seats filled up. We actually got the last seats left and waited there until the trail opened at 5:30 AM. Luckily, we had some nice stars to observe as we waited.
We arrived at Inti Punku, or the Sun Gate, by 6:30 and caught our first glimpse of Machu Picchu!! Then, the photoshoots began. As we descended, we continued to get new and more spectacular views of the ruins.
Tumblr media
After all the impressive Inca sites we saw along the trail, I expected Machu Picchu to be anti-climactic. It most certainly was not. The main questions that came to mind were how and why? Our guide talked us through a lot of the history but the truth is, most of it is quite a mystery. That makes the site even more special in my eyes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bess, Josh, Junior, and I departed the group to begin our hike of Huayna Picchu Mountain which is on the list of the 20 most dangerous hikes in the world. With 1,000 ft of elevation gain in less than 1 mile, the hike was challenging but not impossible. It only took us about 45 minutes to reach the summit which had rewarding views of the Andes, Machu Picchu Mountain, and Machu Picchu itself.
Tumblr media
On our way back, we walked through Machu Picchu again and were almost trampled by two crazy llamas! We thought, wouldn't it have been crazy to survive one of the worlds most dangerous hikes just to have been killed by llamas when we finished?
We ended the trip with a relaxing lunch in the scenic town of Aguas Calientes before venturing back to Cusco.

How to Hike the 4-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu: A Complete Guide
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic treks in the world, drawing adventurers, history buffs, and nature lovers from across the globe. This 4-day trek leads to the ancient Incan citadel of Machu Picchu, passing through stunning mountain landscapes, cloud forests, and impressive archaeological sites along the way. In this complete guide, we'll cover everything you need to know to hike the 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, from preparation and packing to the trek itself.
What is the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu?
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a 26-mile (42 km) trek through the Andes that takes you through breathtaking scenery and ancient ruins. The trail follows the steps of the ancient Incas, ending at the famous Machu Picchu, one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. The trek is typically completed over four days, and hikers can enjoy scenic views, learn about Incan history, and experience the unique flora and fauna of the region.
Why Hike the Inca Trail?
Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu offers a truly immersive experience that combines history, culture, and natural beauty. Here are a few reasons why you should consider taking on this adventure:
Historical Significance: The Inca Trail is part of a vast network of ancient roads used by the Incas to connect their empire. Hiking the trail gives you a direct connection to this rich history.
Stunning Scenery: From misty cloud forests to snow-capped peaks, the landscapes you'll encounter on the Inca Trail are nothing short of spectacular.
Physical Challenge: The 4-day trek is physically demanding but accessible for most hikers in good health. It’s a rewarding challenge that pushes your limits and offers a sense of accomplishment at the end.
Sense of Discovery: Unlike many other treks, the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is filled with ancient ruins and sacred sites, allowing you to uncover hidden gems as you hike.
Preparation: What to Know Before You Go
Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu requires careful preparation. Here’s everything you need to do before you hit the trail.
1. Book Your Trek in Advance
Due to its popularity, the Inca Trail has limited access, with only 500 permits issued daily, and these fill up quickly, especially during peak seasons. It’s important to book your trek several months in advance, ideally six months ahead. A licensed tour operator will secure your permits, and you’ll hike with a guide and porters.
2. Get Acclimatized
The Inca Trail begins at a high altitude (starting around 8,000 feet / 2,400 meters) and reaches over 13,800 feet (4,215 meters) at the highest point, Dead Woman's Pass. To avoid altitude sickness, you should arrive in Cusco at least 2-3 days before your trek to acclimatize. During this time, drink plenty of water, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol.
3. Physical Preparation
While the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is not a technical climb, it’s still a challenging hike that requires stamina and physical fitness. The trek involves long days of hiking on uneven terrain, often at high altitudes. Consider doing endurance exercises like hiking, cycling, or running, and practice walking with a heavy backpack to prepare for the trek.
4. Packing Essentials
Here’s a packing list for the 4-day Inca Trail trek:
