You know what? Now that I think about it, it's a really good thing we didn't see Mummy getting really really really pissed off, not just because of the hidden powers he could have as an undead monster, but because it is very well know that when a peruvian gets really angry, HELL WILL FOLLOW CLOSE

sometimes btvs has a really fucking good idea for an episode with lots of nuance and shit to unpack but then chickens out at the last moment. what if buffy was so convinced something was wrong with her moms new boyfriend but he was a normal human and buffy was just trying to justify the fact that she was upset about the replacement of her dad. what if buffy had to deal with the guilt of murdering an innocent person because she couldn't deal with her mom moving on. what if being the slayer meant that you risk accidentally killing people every time you hit them because you were made to fight vampires and not a man who slapped you. what if being the slayer colored your every interaction with people and you couldn't escape the constant paranoia and can never form meaningful relationships with people who don't know about you being the slayer. actually the boyfriend was a creepy obsessed murder robot everythings fine
#buffy the vampire slayer#btvs#s2e11 ted#also the inca mummy girl episode would have been an interesting moral dilemma but the mummy solves it by just being evil

Eight Mummies and Pre-Inca Artifacts Discovered in Peru
Peruvian gas workers made an astonishing discovery beneath the ancient streets of Lima this week — uncovering eight mummies and a number of Pre-Inca artifacts.
“We are recovering those leaves of the lost history of Lima that is just hidden under the tracks and streets,” said Jesus Bahamonde, an archaeologist with Calidda, the company that distributes natural gas to the 10 million residents of Peru’s capital city.
Since the company began expanding its gas line system nearly two decades ago, they’ve racked up more than 1,900 archeological finds — including mummies, pottery, and textiles, Bahamonde said.
In the most recent discovery, the eight mummified males were found bundled up in the trench, wrapped in cotton cloth and tied with ropes braided from vines. Workers found the bodies about a foot below the ground.
Archeologists with the gas company believe the men belonged to a pre-Inca culture called Ichma, which formed around A.D. 1100 and flourished in the valleys around Lima until it was absorbed into the Inca Empire in the late 15th century.
Roberto Quispe, an archeologist who worked in the trench, sad the mummified bodies are likely two adults and six minors.
Lima, now an urban economic hub, has been occupied by humans for more than 10,000 years, from the Pre-Incan cultures to the Spanish conquistadors who claimed the land in the 16th century.
Many archeological finds have proven to be from more recent times.
In 2018, Quispe and other archaeologists working in the La Flor neighborhood found wooden coffins holding three Chinese immigrants buried in the 19th century.
The bodies were found alongside opium pipes, hand-rolled cigarettes, shoes, Chinese playing cards, a Peruvian silver coin minted in 1898 and a certificate of completion of employment contract, written and Spanish and dated 1875.
The eight mummies were found amidst braised chicken restaurants and a road that leads to Peru’s only nuclear power station.
“When the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century they found an entire population living in the three valleys that today occupy Lima … what we have is a kind of historical continuation,” Bahamonde said.
Most of the archaeological sites uncovered by Calidda have been burial sites discovered on flat ground, Bahamonde said.
Aso scattered throughout the urbanized city are more than 400 larger archeological sites, known in the indigenous Quechua language as “huacas,” which are sacred adobe constructions typically found on hilltops.

BTVS inadvertently trans-ish canon quotes:
So, Ampata. You're a girl. Yes. For many years now.
(part 1 / ?) from 2x04 Inca Mummy Girl
#btvs#totally canon#inca mummy girl#text post#this is a canon show quote#inadvertently trans#ep: 2x04 inca mummy girl#i say inadvertent#bc i don't think the show in general or the writers specifically really considered trans people#also in case in wasn't clear this is a pro trans blog#and while this quote was played for mild laughs in the show#i really do think Ampata's sincere delivery and her attempt to be normal bc she's actually not a 16 year old foreign exchange student#makes this more trans

Rewatching with someone who has totally fresh eyes can be really enlightening sometimes. My partner and I reached Inca Mummy Girl last night - an episode I've previously written off as not having much to say - and they were talking about how much they liked Ampata, and that she was their favourite villain so far specifically because they had the most sympathetic motive. Which I hadn't really appreciated before, but it's true - Ampata is one of the first villains in this stretch of the series, along with Spike, Drusilla, Ford, Ethan, etc, that are more Characters with Motivations than they are pure symbols of some metaphorical challenge that Buffy is facing, all of whom set the stage for Angelus. And as the first villain we see that is clearly a version of Buffy that makes different choices under similar circumstances, she sets the stage for Drusilla, Faith, and Glory too.

Well, on the bright side, Mummy Inca Girl introduces Oz! Who I'm already preferring with Willow over Xander. Willow deserves better than Xander. Everyone deserves better than Xander. Even the mummy girl.

random 'Inca Mummy Girl' thoughts:
In the museum, Buffy is disappointed her friends think she solves all her problems with violence. Then later, Giles agrees to let her go to the dance to end their training session, because when she trains while angry she unintentionally hurts him. Her response: "Yay! I win :)". Don't know if I have anything to say about that, but I'm definitely paying more attention to Buffy's characterisation on this rewatch, and noticing more of her Faith-like traits.
I think of Xander's jealousy over Buffy as a Season One thing, but it seems to be sticking around, and I am extremely tired of it. Hope it doesn't last much longer.
The Scoobies' assumption that Ampata can translate an ancient Incan relic just because they're South American is so wild I struggle not to read it as a joke at their expense. (Though given the show's approach to other cultures - as exemplified by this episode especially - it almost certainly isn't.)
It's interesting that this episode doesn't try to play itself as a mystery - the audience is never kept in the dark about what's happening, even as the Scoobies are. It's much to the episode's benefit - it allows Ampata to be an actual character, where a mystery would likely keep her at too much of a distance. It doesn't just make her sympathetic - it makes her a viewpoint character, which makes the Buffy parallels much more tangible.
Speaking of which, this episode has a Garth Marenghi approach to subtext, but honestly I kind of like that. It's nice to have subtext even I can notice sometimes.
I didn't remember going in that Oz first appeared in this episode, so that was a nice surprise. But then seeing Jonathan was even more of one - I really wasn't expecting to see him so soon. Strange that such a small role became a recurring character when so many Sunnydale students appear in one episode and then are immediately forgotten about, but I guess he does give a good, distinctive performance.
Sorry Buffy, but "I'll say one thing for you Incan mummies - you don't kiss and tell," is just a terrible quip. And you can tell Buffy was thinking of it on the journey - as she runs to the museum she's thinking to herself 'I need to say something funny about kissing, I guess?', and she does a bad job. I think she needs to take some improv classes or something if she's gonna keep doing this.
#there's no particular reason i'm doing this for this episode#just felt like jotting down my thoughts#btvs#btvs rewatch#btvs s2#notes#Inca Mummy Girl

Read Tintin, they said. It's for kids, they said.
Every night for the next 4-5 years I lay petrified in my bed unable to get to sleep because there were mummies crawling about in my room ready to grab me if I moved. Thanks, Hergé.
