WC: 1827 - Rated: T for some swearing, child welfare discussions, failure to thrive - Written for @loceitweek, a continuation of last year's story. - After a very special story, Patton settles into bed and our three get the chance to talk.
After one more trip to the bathroom, Patton was finally brushed and scrubbed and clad in soft pajamas. Toddling back to the office-turned playroom, he clutched what was formerly Janus’ yellow scarf in one hand and gripped Logan’s hand in the other.
Emerging from the conference room as they approached, Janus bowed and gestured broadly toward the office, both invitation and prevention. He’d positioned himself to block the path to the conference room where Grace and her relief were in a deep discussion. It likely was unnecessary, though, as the transformation of Logan and Janus’ office had successfully captured the little boy’s full attention.
Soft music played from Remus’ phone in one corner of the room, one of Beethoven’s more subdued pieces. Remus had also made adjustments to the room’s ordinarily bright lighting. The overhead lamps were off and shades drawn down over the tall windows facing street lights. The room was far from completely dark, though. Muted light spilled out from underneath each of their desks and from under the small pull-out couch where Remus had apparently wedged their desk lamps.
He hadn’t opened the sofa bed and instead had constructed a nest for Patton on top of the plush cushioned seats, sheets tucked in and a fluffy blanket imprinted with SpiderMan swinging between buildings spread over the top. A small stuffed owl with big round eyeglasses and what might pass for a necktie sat next to the pillow.
Patton looked up and waited for Logan's nod, then ran to the bed and hugged the stuffie to his chest. His happy hum and the brilliant smile pulling up his cheeks brought a welcome warmth to Logan’s chest and he smiled at Remus. “Where did you find that?” he whispered.
Turning to wave at Janus as he rejoined the discussion in the conference room, Remus grinned and bumped Logan’s shoulder. “Unadulterated luck. It was by the checkstands on clearance. Think it was supposed to be for graduation or some sh—thing,” he quickly censored. Head tilted, he watched Patton climb up onto the couch. “Can’t deny the resemblance,” he teased, looking at Logan and adjusting imaginary eyeglasses.
I suppose not,” he chuckled, then crouched next to the sofa, smiling at the drowsy toddler. “You look quite tired, Patton. You should rest for the night. We will be right across the hall if you need anything.”
Patton frowned at him, one tiny hand darting out to grab his sleeve as he shook his head, curls bouncing.
Remus laughed good naturedly and squeezed Logan’s shoulder. “You didn’t actually think that was going to work, did you?” He had one more magic trick to pull from the red Target bab and, with a flourish, he pressed a large picture book into Logan’s hands.
The little boy’s eyes were immediately drawn to the colorful picture on the cover. The riot of clashing colors that somehow still fit each other, reminding Logan of the ‘tattoos’ Patton had left on his arms. He’d temporarily rolled down his sleeves before helping Patton brush his teeth, protecting the washable ‘art,' and even now they seemed to glow in the half-lit room.
“Try reading him that,” Remus murmured to Logan before bowing his head at Patton. “G’night, Bud. See ya in the morning.”
Patton waved at Remus with the stuffed owl’s wing before turning back to Logan with wide eyes.
Chuckling, Logan nodded and settled himself on the floor with the book, back pressed to the side of the couch and holding it up so they could both see the words and pictures. “‘A House for Hermit Crab,’” he read aloud, setting aside his concern at the oversimplified personification of the little sea creature. Not every book meant for a young audience needed to be perfectly scientifically accurate, even one of his favorite book series when he was a child had included species inaccuracies in the differences between frogs and toads.
He continued reading and was immediately impressed with the more scientific explanation on the inside cover. “‘Hermit Crabs live on the ocean floor. Their skin is hard, except for the abdomen,’” Logan patted his own belly, smiling when Patton copied him with a giggle. “‘Which is soft. To protect this soft spot, the hermit crab borrows a shell…’”
The little boy was transfixed, curled on his side and staring at the pictures as he listened to Logan’s slow, low reading voice. Nodding, Logan turned the page and paused, looking up to see Remus had been watching him read from the hallway. He winked and gave him one more wave before joining Janus and the social workers in the other room.
Logan swallowed, steadying his voice before he spoke the next words aloud. “‘“Time to move,” said Hermit Crab one day in January. “I’ve grown too big for this little shell.”’” He glanced at Patton, whose big eyes had grown even wider. With Janus’ scarf and the stuffed owl hugged to his chest, he tangled his fingers in Logan’s sleeve, keeping him close. Logan smiled and went on with the story. “‘He had felt safe and snug in his shell. But now it was too snug…’”
Together, they followed the little hermit crab through his journey of finding a new home, gathering together new friends to help keep safe and comfortable in his shell. As the story progressed and the hermit crab became more comfortable with his new home, Patton’s eyelids grew heavier, each blink a little slower than the last. Until finally, his eyes slipped shut when the hermit crab joyfully declared his new home was perfect.
When it became clear the little boy was asleep, Logan read ahead silently, the story's bittersweet ending about the impermanence of even good things tightening his throat as he quietly closed the book and set it on the end table next to the sofa.
“Gets ya right here, huh?” Remus whispered from the doorway, tapping his own sternum.
Clearing his throat, Logan nodded and tried to blink away the heat growing behind his eyes. “Indeed,” he whispered back and patted the floor next to him. Patton’s grip on his shirt had barely loosened and, if asked, he would explain he intended to wait until the child was more deeply asleep before attempting to extricate himself.
If Logan were to be completely honest, though, he’d have to admit that wasn’t the only thing keeping him at Patton's side.
“A remarkable attention span for a toddler,” he said once Remus had sat beside him. “Not at all what I would expect from one so young.”
“It’s not,” Remus agreed. He took a deep breath and paused before speaking again. “Y’know… I don’t think he’s a toddler, Lo. He’s fully potty trained and he’s already gotten fillings on his second molars,” he explain, voice low. “Did you see when we brushed his teeth?”
Logan frowned, recalling the silver at the back of his mouth. “I… Well, yes. Frankly I assumed it was the result of parental neglect. Poor hygiene.” He hugged his knees to his chest, the memory of his own hours in dentists’ chairs tinting his thoughts.
Nodding, Remus leaned to his side until their heads rested against each other’s. “Yeah, it’s pretty fucked up for a kid his age to already have cavities. But those back teeth don’t come in until they’re at least two. I’d…” Remus shrugged and looked up over the top of Logan’s head, watching Patton sleep. “You saw the way he holds a marker? And his speech? He’s closer to four, I think.”
“Four years old? He’s…” Logan swallowed against the lump in his throat. The pajama set Remus had purchased was sized for an 18-month old toddler. “But he’s so small.”
“He is.” They both looked up at Janus’ silhouette in the doorway and Logan beckoned him in. Janus slid down onto the floor next to him, casually letting their thighs touch. The closeness was a comfort and, sandwiched between the two of them, Logan leaned in. "Grace will be back in the morning and Norman figured we had things covered well enough here. They're both gone."
All three relaxed for a moment, absorbing a bit of stolen time where they didn't need to be careful. After a while, though, Janus sighed. “I’m afraid Re’s correct. About his age." He stroked his cheek when Logan turned to him, shock stealing his voice. "I found a scan of his birth certificate at the back of his initial removal paperwork. He was born in 200 8.” He sighed again, turning with him to look at the toddler-sized child curled up behind them. “Patton is three and half years old.”
“Of course,” Logan muttered under his breath. His usual pleasure at learning something new crackled and ached in his chest. “Failure to thrive?” He didn't really need to ask.
Janus nodded.
Logan’s hands fell to his lap, an odd emptiness dragging down his arms. His stomach suddenly dropped, a cold block of lead at his next realization. “How long has this poor child been in foster care? A contested TPR takes years.”
Letting out a slow breath, Janus hung his head and covered Logan’s hand with his own. “He was first removed at three months when his mother entered rehab as part of a plea bargain.”
“Fuck,” Remus swore, adam’s apple bobbing.
With his other hand, Logan threaded their fingers together. “Indeed,” he said again, shaky.
“He was in and out of kinship care for the next two years. Maternal grandparents.” Patton shifted in his sleep and Janus smiled when he noticed the little boy had hugged the yellow scarf close. “They declined to care for him further.”
“He’s their grandchild,” Logan frowned, struggling to keep his voice down.
Janus looked like he’d eaten something rancid. “And I quote, ‘Kelly’s made her bed, she needs to lie in it.’”
Logan scoffed and shook his head. “And where’s his father in all this?”
“Some putz out of state,” Janus sneered. “Demanded a paternity test until they told him he’d have to pay for it himself. Signed away any rights faster than the social worker for the first removal could hang up the phone.”
The hushed cry at the back of Logan’s mind grew louder and he drew each of their hands close to his chest. “I can't be Patton’s GAL,” he announced, a radical idea growing in strength even as he struggled to find the words to explain his desire. “No judge would allow a GAL to serve dual roles.”
Mouth slack, Janus narrowed his eyes. “Are you suggesting what I think you are?”
He nodded slowly and Janus turned to look at Patton.
Remus watched them both, eyebrows pinched in confusion. “Hey, hot nerds, fill me in,” he said, scooting closer, eyes bouncing between each of them. “What do you mean, ‘dual roles?’”
Logan took a deep breath and smiled shakily at each of them. “I mean… Legally I cannot be both his GAL… and his foster parent.”

Going back to your post about calculating BTR showverse ages (first of all it was amazing btw) I was wondering, did you believe that the years were accurate? Like did it all take place in the year of when the episodes premiered or did they have different canonically years like some tv shows do?
Ahhh thank you!! 💖✨To be honest, I don’t think the years were completely accurate, but I think it can go both ways depending on how you look at it. When I was making the BTR showverse ages post, I was basing it off of the episode release dates—call it chronological order if you will—mainly because it made the most sense to me. After all, growing up I thought I was just watching a bunch of “high school” hockey players from Minnesota making music while getting into wacky hijinks.
And for some episodes, the chronological thing kinda worked! In “Big Time Tests”, which was released on June 27, 2013, Logan takes the MCAT exam. According to this website, the summer session for the MCAT takes place between June and July. Although, assuming that Logan was “graduating” from high school, I don’t think one can go straight to med school from high school without earning a bachelor’s degree first class (unless there are special programs out there that do offer that, but then again, idk jack abt anything and that’s just my overthinking brain for you lol). Chronological order should make the most sense, because it’s easier for our brains to comprehend/its what our brain defaults to, right?
But then we hit a point in the BTR showverse where chronological order gets questioned, and I get confused and ask myself, “so are the guys still in high school or....?” I mean, I know the guys were in their 20s when they were casted to play 15-16 year olds, but season 4/a little bit of season 3 hit a point where they all looked like borderline college students. Maybe it was around the time James and Kendall had similar haircuts. And apart of me sometimes questioned whether or not they were (at least at the time season 3 and 4) still in high school.
Thus, here are some reasons (not saying that they’re good ones) why I think BTR could’ve had different canonical years:
In “Welcome Back Big Time”, the guys are to perform at Rocktoberfest, which judging by the name, we could infer that it takes place in October. According to the BTR wiki, the original air date for this episode was September 25, 2010 (USA) and January 28, 2011 (CAN).
The last time the show has shown the guys in a school setting was “Green Time Rush”. And for the rest of the show (minus Big Time Prom Kings i guess?), the guys are never shown in school/doing school activities again. Did they finish their high school studies early? Were we supposed to assume that the showverse guys were continuing their studies behind the scenes? I don’t know, chief! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Either way, we really got deprived of a “Big Time Graduation” episode 😔
In the How To Rock crossover episode with BTR, “How to Win an Election” (which aired about two months before season 3 of BTR premiered), main protagonist Kacey asks the guys, “Don’t you guys remember what high school was like?” Later on towards the end of the episode one of the guys (I think it was Logan?) said, “We talked it over and we ended up sharing our embarrassing high school stories.” This implies the guys have finished their high school studies and are no longer attending school. Whereas, in their show, the guys are still (questionably) portrayed as high schoolers. But then again, we don’t know if the guys were playing their showverse characters or as their irl selves.
At the end of a day, I’m just an overthinker of a fan over-analyzing one of my favorites TV shows lol. So who’s to say what’s right and what’s wrong? What’s canon and what’s theory? I just find it fascinating to find the logic in a show that has left me with many unanswered questions. Like how come Carlos was affected by Gustavo’s shock system in “Big Time Strikes”, but in “Big Time Break Up” the metal plate in his head makes him immune to the shocks from Logan and Kelly? Or what happened to Stephanie King and why did no one acknowledge her disappearance after “Big Time Dance”? And just like the amount of licks it gets to the center of a tootsie pop: no one really knows.

congratulations logan, aries is now dane ducios with the faceclaim santiago segura
APPLICATION
Character Sign: Aries
Character name: Dane Duclos Birthday: 04/01/1997 Sexuality: Straight-Curious Gender: Male Moon Sign: Capricorn Faceclaim: 1) Santiago Segura  or 2) Alexander Koch Power:  Combustion Inducement: Users can increase the kinetic of atoms and molecules causing them to ignite. This process creates heat, that user can use. Personally I see Dane’s ability as a hindrance than something he has mastered or something the others seem to be gifted with. I like the idea of tying his aggressive and passionate side into his power. As much as him controlling flames seemed cool, that didn’t seem volatile enough—aka why I liked the idea that his anger could stem multiple minor explosions through the air or an object around him causing fires or miniature explosions (like a firework). His ability SHOULD NOT be confused with controlling flames, causing massive explosions, or something along the lines of thermodynamics/control. His ability is simple able to cause atoms to spontaneously spark to the point of causing friction, heat, flames, or a volatile mixture of both. I want him to use this ability a lot in the beginning as signs that he’s pissed off…since I wanted him to come across as passionate and headstrong but has a killer facade. Like can you imagine him getting into an argument and he just accidentally causing a candle to burst into flames but then can put it out? I just find that funny.
If that power seem too over powered or less controlled—since I know you wanted balance, so I had a back power or secondary if you don’t like the first.
Fire Absorption:  The ability to absorb fire and utilize it in some way. It’s fairly straight forward, like fire negation, but I like the idea of his sign being under the house of fire that instead of destroying or dismissing fire—he could instead absorb it. I imagine him quench accidental fires, magical explosions, or generally take fire in a way to enhance him. Personally the only enhancement I’d want is when he absorbs fire he has a stamina boost. Like a extra shot of espresso or something. I know most absorption powers can be too wonky making the person invinicble the more than can absorb but for me… I just want it to be a leveling ability that can minor cancel problems while being minorly effective or influential for Dane.
What do they study: Architecture, I like the idea of him being in the department or school of design at Durham. For him architecture is this unlimited space to create something long lasting, to have a physical imprint on history. In high school is when he learned that creating homes to bridges, to the newest or most advance buildings gave him this passion he never expected to have. Before that his family assumed he’d go into law or politics, but the way he spoke about design made them lenient on letting him explore that.
Biography:              (TW: Abortion, TW: Pregnancy )
Etched from the finest marble, details were in the hands of your master on that day since you would become their perfect creation. Son of a diplomat and a lawyer, he was shoved into a light he had to learn to soak up. For Dane, every moment from the age of nine until now has had a plan, a certain design to be finished out. His schooling, his friends, down to his extracurricular choices would pave the way to what he thought was his goals. His parents weren’t that overbearing as most would think, they were firm but supportive yet in the eyes of their son they were two of the hardest people to make proud. His mind clouded love as a test to pass. He took strides in everything he did to be the best—to climb the rankings as the one to look at. In his heart he believed he could do anything, that all the compliments and congratulations as a child were fabricated into the crown he wears on his head this day. He’d be royalty, he’d be the golden ichor that the gods spoke of.
                                  He’d be unstoppable.
However one thing almost derailed that for him, the outlier to his future—the one girl that would have halted it all. Lillian Alcott was the one thing that he never expected. She was an angel with a vixen’s heart, she spoke in riddles, and caused every minute that Dane was with her to be complicated but intriguing. The straight forward, overachiever had met the one that didn’t fit into his world—which then became the one thing that couldn’t be unhinged from it either. For three years they dated, loved, and spent every moment working a way to have her in his life forever. Days would become months and Dane’s design for himself grew into a design for them. However The Fates were always fickle women, as it seemed he was destined for something else, as a choice; no a forced decision would cause the two to break. It was four months before graduation, before Dane would head to Durham on early scholarship and Lilian would attend a university close to him, when they found out she was pregnant. The news was tough at first but he grew to love the idea—as such  Lilian grew on him. Once again he began to edit his plans for the future, until his parents got hold of what was happening. “How could you? Were you even thinking? You are too young!”; They’d argue and try to berate him onto their view points, yet Dane stood his ground. He wanted the child, wanted her, and didn’t give a damn about how he’d do it all—but he would. Disappointingly though, his parents with their wealth and connections would make that reality into a fantasy.
Graduation rolled around and Dane found himself alone across the stage. Months before Lilian would have found herself up state, losing the only reason that would tether their lives together any longer, and a promise to never come back at the price of his father’s bank account. Broken, confused, and bitter he tried to live out his last few weeks in his home town. with his family acting like nothing happened, until he could escape to college. To a fresh start. That was when he promised himself that nothing—no one—would cause him to give up everything he wanted ever again. His parents were distant from him, he continued to excel at what he did with pride and hard work, yet as every superficial accomplishment he gained his heart grew harder and harder. He began to replace dates with screwing others, replacing committed to casual, and focused on a life he thought he needed….a life solely about him and his ambitions. An empty one at that….
Five interesting facts about your character:
Dane is multilingual as he knows Canadian-French, Arabic, English, and Spanish
At a young age he was the youngest fencer to be nationally ranked in the top five in over 30 years. He was fourth in Canada before the age of sixteen, and won several championships.
Thanks to his father’s possession he has a clean record, not even a speeding ticket. Thanks to the little more than a decade of diplomatic immunity he and his family received. Dane is very much like a golden boy or boy-scout, cause he only pushes the envelope just enough to not break it but get what he wants.
He’s allergic to pears and white chocolate. Something he hated as a kid but now barely affects him. Though at times have asked girls to not where certain perfumes cause even the scent of pears makes him sneeze
Is an only child but swear that Kelly James may have been his long-lost-sister, since they are so eerily alike but different that when he first began to hang out he was taken back by it.
Character Quote:  “Got hands like an ocean, push you out, pull you back in”
If your character had a patronus what would it be? and why?: Probably would be a hawk. Hawks are clever creatures but their precision to detail and focus is what makes me feel like Dane would inevitably muster up this corporal sign. Focused, executing plan lethally and effectively….yeah, reminds me of my boy a lot.
WRITING SAMPLE
“God damn it Imogen can you just shut up!” he screamed, causing his magic to lunge behind the girl—igniting, torching the lamp post. It was a long night and being forced with the girl caused his blood to finally boil over. At first spark, the fire caused her to jump on her heels and away from the accident.
“What the fuck Dane, control yourself.” she replied, like a viper, while her eyes cut deeply into him.
Seeing her judge him like that almost caused him to scorch another object around them, yet he took a breath instead. Almost as hot as he felt he exhaled while turning away. You’d think both signs, both ruled under their elemental house would have had a stronger bond—yet it was opposite. Their hearts and soul might burn with the same passion fueled by fire, but their minds were too differential.Sporadic, popular, care free…a child through and through, while Dane’s was fabricated, steely focused on the next task, aggressive. They were frankly oil and water, hell even gasoline and an open flame. Combustible, volatile, the two’s presence could cause others around them to feel the pressure and heat from the fire and vigor they could muster. Dane’s glances were still out and away from her, but with another breath he turned to look at her—more calculated and reserved. “I am under control, but I don’t think you understand how important it is to realize what’s happening to us; to all of us.” he started, her smug grin only making him want to smear it across her features. “This isn’t just ooooh we are witches or some shit, this isn’t fucking Harry Potter…what we have, what we can do!” his hand pointing behind her as the post was barely smoldering at that point. “We are dangerous….so fucking grow up.”
Would his words change her? Would they form chains of reason that would bind her to their world and not whatever world she vacationed to? Probably not but since  the twelve had met things have been escalating, their powers were magnificent yet deeply strong. Some were more passive than the others but like Dane’s they were active, aggressive and made him worry. Was he the only one taking things seriously? Since most have been acting like they were still college students, still going to Frat parties, and cramming for studies. However his mind was clouded, his plans were altered, and this architect needed things to go as he envisioned them.
“Dane seriously, you need to stop worrying. All you do is bitch, brood, or suck any fun out of everything. This is a gift not some responsibility, so worry about that than all of us. You aren’t our babysitter.” she responded with such an air that it teetered or the truth and arrogance, “Even so, I think you are the one that needs more control.” smiling before she walked passed him and back into the party.

Welcome back college football fans! This is our final Campus Hot Takes for the 2018 season. Logan & Scott would like to thank all of our loyal readers for sticking with us all year and for enjoying the journey through this college football season. So whether your a fan from Tuscaloosa, Clemson, South Bend or Norman (or none of those) we hope your team had a great season. Some surprised us, some disappointed us. So here we go, Scott & Logan’s Top 3 surprises & disappointments. Then the picks for the 5 bowl games they’re most looking forward to (and some of them may match!)
SURPRISES:
SCOTT
1) Central Florida (12-0): Josh Heupel strolls in to replace Scott Frost and nothing changes. Another perfect season, and I know everyone will say “It’s the AMERICAN”. Still, 12-0 is 12-0. Do they belong in the Top 4 over Oklahoma? No, because if there was a “play-in” game, the Sooners would win, although it would probably go like that Chiefs/Rams Monday night game. In other words, the first to 60 wins. I didn’t expect them to go undefeated for a second straight year. Now having said that. UCF should consider joining a conference if they don’t want to be construed as crying over spilled milk that they didn’t make the Playoff. Oklahoma plays in the Big 12, maybe UCF should too.
2) Notre Dame (12-0): I knew that the Irish were going to improve from last season, as the defense got better and they had solid QB’s in Wimbush & Book. Well early on ND’s running game got them victories as Wimbush would be…ok. They caught Michigan on an off night, and then continued to rack up wins. Then, realizing Wimbush is a good but not great, Brian Kelly started Ian Book against Wake Forest and the Irish scored 56 points. That was it, save for a Wimbush start on Senior Day against Florida State Book kept the ND train moving. But it wasn’t just the throws that made Book stand out. It was the gutsy bootlegs on third and long and all the hits he took. Even in sub-par efforts against Pitt and in particular USC Book gutted out the slumps and have put ND on the verge of history. Can they beat Clemson? It will take a VERY tall order, but with this team anything is possible.
3) Washington State (10-2): All the hoopla in the state of Washington when the season started was on Jake Browning & the Huskies. Certainly not the Cougars & their mustachioed QB Gardner Minchew and his 4,477 yards passing. They overcame the early loss to USC and rolled through all the ranked Pac-12 teams (Stanford & Oregon in particular) and was ready to book tickets to Pasadena (or maybe even a CFP game). Then the dreadful Apple Cup performance and Browning again got the last laugh. Browning finished 4-0 in his career against Washington State. Now instead of a Big 6 bowl, they will go to San Antonio for an Alamo Bowl date with Iowa State. Should be a fun one, but in what was Mike Leach’s final season he made Wazoo fans happy.
LOGAN
1) Kentucky (9-3): No one came as out of nowhere this year than the Kentucky Wildcats. Lead by RB Benny Snell Jr., the Wildcats have won 9 games this season, something they haven’t done in quite sometime. They will meet the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Citrus Bowl to get to the 10 win mark, which will be an amazing feat for head coach Mark Stoops and his team to have accomplished.
2) Florida (9-3): Florida is a team who made a coaching change this past year, bringing in Dan Mullen from Mississippi State. While I had full belief that he would get things turned around, I had no idea how quickly he would make an impact. He was able to guide the Gators to 9 wins and a berth in the Peach Bowl against Michigan. While work needs to be done to overtake the Georgia Bulldogs atop the SEC East, this first season for Mullen in Gainesville is a good sign of things to come.
3) Syracuse (9-3): Like with my other two surprise the Syracuse Orange were able to win 9 games. This team was only team to beat Clemson last year in the regular season, and came pretty damn close to doing it again. They were pretty much the only team to give Clemson a battle when it came to ACC play. Eric Dungey lead the Orange to 9 wins as I said before and will face West Virginia in the Camping World Bowl.
DISAPPOINTMENTS:
SCOTT
1) Penn State (9-3): Now, 9-3 is nothing to sneeze at. But James Franklin was expecting big things in Happy Valley this year. Sure Saquon Barkley’s gone but they still had Trace McSorley and a really good defense that should have competed for a Big 10 title and a playoff spot. Instead they blew a lead at home to Ohio State and laid stinkers against the two Michigan teams. By then McSorley’s bloom fell off the rose. The Nittany Lions played out the string with wins, and will face Kentucky New Year’s Day. But you feel they should have finished better.
2) Miami, Part 1 (7-5): Logan & I both need to pounce on Mark Richt’s mediocre campaign that definitely should have ended better than a Pinstripe Bowl appearance. Were they better than Clemson going into the season? No, but they were expected to at least make them sweat and pounce on the other teams in the conference. Even losing the opener to LSU wasn’t that big a deal, but then after five straight wins they slumped through four weeks of utter misery, including losses to Virginia & Duke. They rebounded to defeat Pitt in the season finale, the team that took what should have been Miami’s spot in the ACC Championship. QB play was inconsistent and the Red Zone offense was atrocious. So they head to the Bronx instead of to Dallas or Miami.
3) UCLA (3-9): I have no idea what the hell happened here. Chip Kelly probably shouldn’t still have a job, but Justin Frye was promoted to Offensive Coordinator after this Bruins team opened the year 0-5 and other than a 7 point loss to Washington none of the games were close. They did win the annual Battle of LA with USC, so there was a silver lining to this abysmal season. However, tensions will be high in Westwood this season as Kelly’s job is definitely on the line.
LOGAN
1) Mississippi State (8-4): This year in Starkville was supposed to be something special. While winning 8 games (possibly 9) is nothing to complain about, the team that Joe Moorehead inherited was one that was thought to challenge Alabama for the SEC West. The defense didn’t disappoint as they were statistically the best defense in the country. The offense is where this team struggled. In the games that the Bulldogs lost, the offense seemed to disappear, only mustering 16 points across the 4 losses they suffered. As a Bulldogs fan I will never cry over 8 or possibly 9 wins but it just feels like this season could’ve been so much more.
2) Miami, Part 2 (7-5): The season didn’t get off to a great start for the Hurricanes, as they were whipped from pillar to post by the LSU Tigers. While LSU ended up being a good team, that isn’t why this Miami team was a disappointment. They were heavy favorites in the ACC Coastal, with no real competition other than Virginia Tech on the horizon. Once they suffered for losses in a row in late October and early November, the division title dreams were all but gone. And while they were able to still win 7 games and finish the season on a 2 game win streak, this season was one where they were expected to be division winners and playoff contenders so all in all it ended up being a disappointment.
3) Wisconsin (7-5): Like Miami above, Wisconsin had high aspirations of not only winning their conference but going on to be in playoff and contend for a national title. A surprising early September upset to BYU derailed the Badgers season, as they weren’t every really able to recover. Again like Miami above they were still heavy favorites in their conference division, but fell victim to an incredibly hot Northwestern team. They will be playing the Miami Hurricanes in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, but it may as well be the Disappointment Bowl because both sides know if they had lived up to the hype this could’ve been a playoff semifinal.
Scott’s Bowl Picks to watch: 1) Mitsubishi Motors Las Vegas Bowl: Fresno State vs. Arizona State (Looking forward to seeing the Bulldogs end their fun season on a high note) 2) Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl: Houston vs. Army (When was the last time Army won 11 games in a season? It could happen if they beat the Cougars) 3) New Era Pinstripe Bowl: Miami vs. Wisconsin (As stated above, Mark Richt needs to end the year on a high note) 4) Camping World Bowl: West Virginia vs. Syracuse (Fun game with two fun offenses, when they’re on) 5) College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: No. 2 Clemson vs. No. 3 Notre Dame (Well duh)
Logan’s Bowl Picks to watch: 1) Fiesta Bowl: Central Florida vs. LSU (UCF going up against another SEC team in a bowl game again will be interesting) 2) Outback Bowl: Iowa vs. Mississippi State (Two of the best defenses in country and two powerful ground games should make this one interesting to see who overpowers who) 3) Orange Bowl: Alabama vs. Oklahoma (As if this one being a playoff semifinal doesn’t make this one exciting enough, we have the two top Heisman finalist in the same game and I’m sure Tua will be in the mindset to prove the voters they chose the wrong guy. 4) Camping World Bowl: Syracuse vs West Virginia (This is a matchup of two incredibly high powered offenses and should feature a lot of points) 5) Quick Lane Bowl: Minnesota vs Georgia Tech (This is Paul Johnson’s last game with the Yellow Jackets, so it should interesting to see if he pulls out anything crazy with his already incredible option attack)

Well didn’t we have a busy weekend in college football! We saw one playoff team slide and one we least expected move up. We are in November, which means every game matters. So before we give you the latest standings & this weekend’s morsels, let’s check out the scorching Hot Takes!
LOGAN:
Georgia Clinches the East: Georgia and Kentucky entered this game with everything on the line. The winner would be SEC Eastern Division champions and would stay alive in the playoff race. Kentucky, who has been incredibly impressive and a huge surprise all season, welcomed the Dogs to Lexington with the all their home fans hyped out of their minds. The Dogs though, were able to squash any hype or hope for Kentucky to make this a dream season. Georgia took 28-10 lead into the fourth quarter and that was just too much to overcome for Kentucky. Georgia would win 34-17 in the end and are headed back to Atlanta in December for another battle against the team I will talk about next for the SEC Championship.
Alabama Dominates…..Again: As with the game above, the Western Division of the SEC was also on the line on Saturday. Alabama could lock the West up with a victory, while LSU could put themselves in at least the driver’s seat to the division title. This game though, like the one above, was never particularly close. Alabama was able completely shut down any offense LSU could muster, only amassing 196 total yard (only 12 of those were rushing yards). As usual Tua was his incredible self and Bama’s defense was impressive as always, as the Tide shutout the Tigers 29-0. Alabama will meet Georgia in the SEC Championship after the regular season ends in what will basically be a playoff qualifier.
UCF Passes Their First Test: As I’ve discussed in previous weeks, the American Conference is one that I’ve been become incredibly interested in. UCF is the class of the conference, as they are riding a 20+ game winning streak from last year and the only undefeated team left in the conference this year. This past week was the start of the most difficult part of UCF schedule facing the other top teams in the conference. Their first test came at the hands of the Temple Owls, who had recently knocked off previously undefeated Cincinnati. While Temple lead at the half of this shootout of a game, UCF was able to hold Temple to only one score in the second to come away with the 50-42 victory. UCF welcomes in Navy next week before finishing the season with Cincinnati and USF.
West Virginia Outlasts Texas: Two weeks ago, Texas was riding high. They had just defeated rival Oklahoma, they were ranked number 6, and were very much in a position where they could roll all the way to the Big 12 title game. Oh how times have changed? Coming off upset loss to Oklahoma State, Texas had a big opportunity to get their mojo back against fellow Big 12 favorite West Virginia. This game was quite the offensive showcase and might have very well been the game of the week. In the end with 16 seconds left to go WVU’s QB Will Grier not only threw a touchdown but scored a game winning two point conversion to lead his team to a 42-41 victory. This doesn’t knock Texas out of the race but they need some help if they hope to win the Big 12.
Mississippi State Rolls Ahead of Huge Test: Mississippi State’s offense has been a huge question mark and source of much worry among their fans this season. It seems like when they play the better defenses in the SEC they just can’t seem to muster much on the offensive side of the ball, despite playing stellar on defense. Well, for at least the last two weeks the offense seems to have found its stride. Granted one of those games was this week’s game against Louisiana Tech, but being able to move the ball that effectively on offense only goes to build the confidence of the entire offense and QB Nick Fitzgerald. They were able to dominate La Tech on the way to a 45-3 victory. Mississippi State now travels to Tuscaloosa to take on the seemingly unbeatable Crimson Tide. While I don’t see any chance the Bulldogs pull off the upset, it will be interesting to see if the offense at least is able to stay somewhat effective or if it seemingly disappears like it has in all of their losses so far this season.
SCOTT:
ND clears another hurdle: No. 3 Notre Dame looked as if it was running away with another victory, leading by 17 points early in the fourth quarter. Well it turned out the Fighting Irish needed one more big dash to secure it. Ian Book threw two touchdown passes and ran 23 yards for a score in the closing minutes to lead Notre Dame to a 31-21 victory over Northwestern on Saturday night. ND remained in line for a playoff spot and continued to build on their best start since the 2012 team went undefeated and went to the last BCS Championship Game. Book has been incredible since starting, and this week is a chance for ND to really pour salt into another teams wound when they host crippled Florida State Saturday.
Wait…that Michigan?: When I watched Michigan’s ugly season opening loss to Notre Dame, I thought it would be a rough year for Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines. Well, turns out that was just a “slow start”. After Saturday’s 42-7 win over Penn State, Michigan has won eight straight and is in the Playoff discussion. Shea Patterson accounted for three touchdowns and the Wolverines put together a dominant performance on defense. The Wolverines moved a step closer toward their goals of winning a conference championship for the first time since 2004 and earning their first spot in the College Football Playoff. The team is following their head coach’s swagger, alluding to the fact they’d run up the score on PSU. The win streak should continue Saturday against putrid Rutgers.
Tigers trucking along: As for #2 Clemson, they just keep trucking along after throttling Louisville 77-16 Saturday to stay undefeated. There’s clearly a personal grudge between Nick Saban & Dabo Swinney, and many feel they want that game for the third year in a row for all the marbles. Clemson has a tough one this week up in Chestnut Hill against #17 Boston College. Speaking of Boston College, when was the last time they were relevant? Glenn Foley? This game does smell a lot like last year’s trip Clemson took to Syracuse. Swinney hopes for a better result.
Is there a clear cut team in the Pac-12?: Washington State’s 19-13 win over California has made the Cougars the clear cut team in the Pac-12. Not that it matters really. The league is full of mediocrity, with 4 and 5 loss teams all over the place. The Cougars have a tricky one this week at Boulder against Colorado, who’s struggled mightily but can get a win here. On the other side of the coin, Will Chip Kelly last long at UCLA? 2-7 is awful, and they’ve looked pretty terrible at times. And 5-4 isn’t a record that USC fans (or school officials) can be happy with either.
Academies Update: Air Force couldn’t seal the deal for the Commander In Chief’s trophy, losing 17-14 to Army at West Point. If Army beats Navy, they win the trophy. However if Navy wins (They already lost to Air Force), each team would have one win. What happens there? The Marines take it? The Coast Guard? An interesting conundrum to have. This week Army has Lafayette at home, Navy is at #12 UCF, and Air Force is home to New Mexico.
So here’s the up to date College Playoff Standings:
IN THE PLAYOFF 1. Alabama 2. Clemson 3. Notre Dame 4. Michigan
IN THE HUNT 5. Georgia 6. Oklahoma 7. LSU 8. Washington State 9. West Virginia 10. Ohio State
Now a look at the important games this weekend. Remember at this point every win and loss matters:
Noon: TCU at #9 West Virginia Noon: #10 Ohio State at #18 Michigan State 3:30pm: #18 Mississippi State at #1 Alabama 3:30pm: Oklahoma State at #6 Oklahoma 7pm: #24 Auburn at #5 Georgia 7:30pm: Florida State at #3 Notre Dame 8pm: #2 Clemson at #17 Boston College
