Giving you an excuse to info dump about the magical girl au all you want bc I think it’s so cool and wanna hear ur inspiration for the designs
Okay here is the info dump I promise. Also thank you for all the tags they were all very nice, and they really push me to create more :)
Normal: As I always say with his design its winx and cheerleader inspired, I already dweled on the first one in a previous post so I'm gonna skip that.
I really wanted to incorporate a star motive in his costume (thus the star top which I adore but was a pain to choose colors for), because I just think it fits him very well, he does lose some of the teenie memorabilia (without the SD for san dimas and the T's in his design) because I thought it is reminicent of his departure from the costume, yet it comes after his "trying not to be himself" phase (the third outfit) so it does bring back the previous colors.
He has teal as his main color because I really like the idea of the Oaks being green, but because ge doesn't quite fit (and because he is the new generation pc) he gets mix of blue and green which is teal (also because blue and white are the schools colors but i only found that out later).
His "trying not to be himself" costume brings in elements of the others costumes, with the chunky shoes and wings from Normal, he is trying to his friends yet pieces of himself still poje through. It has red and blue for Taylor, purple for Scary and yellow and white from Link.
I imagine this look comes after his confrontation with his dad (I want him to try to not be a magical girl for a while, like with the dance arc, and when he tries to transform after his outfit glitches and his powers malfunction, later it turns into this when fightning before he has his realization and it goes to the powerup version).
The last outfit is just his everyday (I considered drawing the teenie suit but It didn't fit on the page unfortunetly lol), I imagine he wears a lot off school merch because he still misses teenie (and yes it still very much stinks).
I think he looks the most like the classic magical girl, I really enjoy the poofy skirt because I didn't draw a lot of skirts here (it either defies logic or has shorts underneath because a skirt is not practical)
Scary: again I think I talked about the first outfit previously, I did tweak the colors and design a little bit (I struggled with the hair color a bit) but nothing very major changed.
She has purple and red (classic villian colors because she is cool and edgy). I think I started this before the betrayl but the second powerup outfit definitly happens after the reveal.
She has a lot of punk and rock influance in her outfit (and yes the platforms are impractical but they do add to the vibe). She gets cool chains but no wings. Also the prop is the Kellog knife.
Her everyday outfit is one I designed a while ago yet really like (I actually made a Scary doll and She wears the same one).
Taylor: god this was such a hassle for color choices it was terrible, just hard to draw in general and I did the Hermie powerup too many details abomination.
He gets flaiming hair like his dad, its also blue like his dad. Its definitly sailor moon inspired (I'm debating whenether Hero hates super gero Taylor or likes him, either way she does point out the sailor moon similarities either as an insult for being unoriginal or as an admiration thing because she does like sailor moon) (I just realized if I make Hero a superhero she gets the tuxedo mask inspired design for sure).
There was samurai inspiration in this (thanks Usagi chronicles you have ridden my mind) and his second outfit has a very faint flower pattent which I really like.
I think apart from power up link he has the most armor. He does get wings but they are tiny and don't really work at first but then do in his power up. Which he might get after going to hell. He does get a tail which I forgot to draw and his ears get pointer (he does also have fangs which Scary is jealous of).
He gets a staff in classical magical girl fashion (and because of his sword staff) and a katana which he does summon and do cool anime stuff with, and it does catch in flames. I really enjoy the Taylor is disabled headcanon thus the staff and i do think he has compressors in his costume.
Hermie: my boy changes designs way too aften, there is his everyday pre magic (he does get the joker stuff still).
He is a magical girl that kinda just joins the gang and is kinda a trickster, Taylor and Normal don't realize he is actually Hermie for a while (Normal doesn't know the longest) while Link and Scary know very quickly (Link is annoyed at Normal for not realizing it and it becomes a gag).
There is his 1 magical girl outfit (its practiclly the same to my previous drawings of him as nothing really changed), then there is his accident outfit (he gets it after the cheese accident), his two-face arc (also talked and shown this one previously), his after the accident everyday and then his power up.
God does it have many details, there is joker, poison ivy and two-face as inspiration in it (his hat has leaves for ivy and coins for two-face). He gets two eyes in his mask and more trickstery look in ode to his father scam. I was really inspied by court jesters and harlequins. I like how he ends up looking like a fea. Oh also question marks for riddler.
He is a silly little guy and I adore him but drawing that again will be a pain.
Link: finally my boy, after Normal he was the second finished drawing. I had a slight problem with his colors, finally picking almost white, yellow and really light green.
His norma outfit is the most practical and soccer players inspired. He gets cool lightning and angel imagery (I really enjoy his contrast with Scary with her purple and black and his yellow and white). He gets cool glowing eyes because I am a sucker for inhuman traits.
His second outfit is very palladin-y, I think the lightning kinda looks like corruption which I really enjoy, he also probablly gets it after Scary's betrayl.
There is gold and copper in his design as accents. The wing shoes were hermies inspired. He gets a glowing sword. I really enjoy some of the biblical imaginery he looks connected to.
Like I said I might honestly make more refrence sheets (I am working on kiddads designs and some other charakters, escpecially villains, but that is a bit harder for me to design so we'll see). Anyway hope this wasn't too ranty and feel free to ask anything or add ideas.

Destiny 2 - The Open Beta
A bad tech demo for a game that should have broken boundaries, but instead alienates its new playerbase by expanding to the PC games market.
The Destiny 2 Beta has come to PC and it looks greater than ever, boasting higher framerates, enhanced texture quality, postprocessing and particle effects. If I were to judge Destiny 2’s debut on PC just on its graphics, I’d say it was a rousing success. Having been liberated from the dreaded 30 FPS lock on consoles, people with a more competitive edge will welcome the higher refresh rates and lower response times in the predominantly PvP focused open beta with open arms. PvE players also get a taste for what is to come with an intro mission, revealing a new threat to the players and the new antagonist - Dominus Ghaul; along with a new strike - “The Inverted Spire”. Due to the linear nature of strikes, it does not offer a lot of replayability and therefore you could expect only about an hour or so of content to get your feet wet, if you’re not interested in partaking in PvP. Considering that the original Destiny featured a semi-expansive open world with procedural questing, which are weirdly not present in the current build, leaves the beta looking like more of a tech demo for the PC crowd, rather than a representation of a game that is set to come out in less than a month. The original had hub spaces where you could meet other players, visit vendors, socialize and go off on missions, while the beta for the sequel finds having an expansive open world MMO completely unnecessary and forces you to play either with your friends over Battle.NET or with random players similar to World of Warcraft’s group finder, completely killing any involvement in the games story and world. Bungie and Activision seem to be unaware that expanding their horizons to PC involves selling this new playerbase the world of Destiny and not just pertaining to the people that have bought and played the original on console. On multiple accounts I’ve seen people refusing to part with $60 in order to play, what they think is a full AAA game, consisting of just a single strike and two PvP modes with no word of the game’s story or open world. The game itself gives you a choice of three classes, each with their own unique abilities and exotic weaponry – the Titan, the Hunter and the Warlock. Each class also features two sub-classes, which change up the abilities almost entirely. During my time with the beta, I managed to try all but the Titan, which is the designated tank of the three, boasting higher health and resistances, along with a small deployable shield or a charge, which makes him a preferred class for many players interested in PvP. Both the Hunter and the Warlock class seem to share a general damage dealer archetype, where the Warlock is seemingly more focused on using abilities, rather than the high mobility gunslinging of the Hunter.
Upon choosing your flavor of character, you are given an exotic weapon according to your class and you are thrown into the intro mission, where you are attempting to save the day and protect “our” home from that pesky Red Legion, determined to destroy “us” all, as if the writers are begging you: “Please empathize with our world and like our characters!”. Speaking of the characters, in the intro you are introduced to three plot significant individuals, representing the three player classes. Weirdly enough, I struggle to remember even their names, due to two thirds of them feeling like the brownest of cardboard cutouts, which are yet again begging you to empathize with the tragedy that is befalling “your” home, despite making no effort to explain anything at all and promptly disappearing in a cloud of smoke, never to be seen again. The other third of the cast is composed of the overly quirky comic relief character - Kay, who is always about two seconds before breaking the fourth wall and play opposition to the really serious and life-changing events about to unfold before your eyes, as if the writers are making a desperate attempt for their characters to have any appeal at all.
As you are taken by surprise by Ghaul, who strips you of your “light” and proceeds to reveal his genetic superiority by beating you to a pulp and eventually kicking you off the platform of his spaceship, you are magically launched into orbit by way of falling to your death, just after being shown how completely limp and powerless you are. I suppose the marketing team couldn’t be bothered to show any of the European Dead Zone, where I would suppose you would fall right after the intro. Instead of that you are sent to what I could only describe as a mission select screen, where you are again given the rich assortment for three entire modes.
PvP is divided into a “low intensity” and “high intensity” variant. The former of which is a supposedly casual capture points experience, which oddly enough isn’t all that low intensity. The latter competitive mode, called “Countdown” puts you in a “cops and robbers” scenario where one team has to set off an explosive, while the other team has to stop that from happening by either disarming the bomb or killing the entire enemy team. There is of course the caveat that upon dying in this high intensity mode, you are left waiting for upwards of thirty seconds in order to see if anyone is going to revive you or will the entire team get wiped out, trying to save a single dead member, which in term leaves you waiting a lot, rather that the quick kill – quick respawn action of the supposed lesser intensity mode. Despite that, it seems that Hunters get a very slight advantage, since both modes often take place in close quarters, and every hunter has increased maneuverability and gets an exotic hand cannon, which is more of a miniature shotgun, rather than a pistol.
The included PvE strike is a little bit more interesting, by featuring some colorful writing and actually showing a bit of the world this game inhabits. The Inverted Spire sets you on a investigation of a mining site where the Red Legion have apparently unearthed something ancient and terrible. Night Trap Research Report
Historical Context
Night Trap was one of two full games (the other being Sewer Shark) developed for a project codenamed the Hasbro NEMO (Never Ever Mention Outside).
Hasbro thought Nintendo’s extremely successful NES would cannibalize their toy market and scouted for a video game project to compete.
The NEMO project began around 1986 and would have been released in 1989 under the name Hasbro Control-Vision, except it was cancelled two months before because executives thought its $299 price tag wouldn’t be competitive against the NES (which seems to have cost only $79 at the time).
They were probably right, but if I was Hasbro I wouldn’t have bothered and would have just made NES games instead.
The Control-Vision was envisioned as the first console capable of streaming video and would have used VHS tapes. The VHS tapes could hold several video streams running simultaneously alongside game code. The game code’s primary function would be to switch video streams. This console would have seen little use outside of FMV titles.
Sewer Shark cost $3 million and Night Trap cost $1.5 million. Both were shot in 1987 but were placed into storage for several years after the Control-Vision was cancelled. Tom Zito, main developer of the Control-Vision, founded Digital Pictures and purchased the video game rights from Hasbro so that they could be released on the then-new Sega CD.
The Turbografx-16 was actually the first console to utilize CD for video games. It was released in Japan in 1987 (known there as the PC-Engine) and America in 1989 where it failed to break the US market. It was technically capable of FMV, but was seldom used for such. It seems FMV was largely an American concept (Hollywood I suppose).
The Sega CD (known as Mega-CD outside of America) was the first console to popularize CD-based games in America, and therefore the first that would be viable for Digital Pictures’ backlog.
Tom Zito/Digital Pictures fervently believed in their FMV technology as the future of video gaming. There’s an interview with Tom Zito from October 1995 in Next Generation magazine issue #3 dated March 1995 that really demonstrates his viewpoint at the time (which would turn out to be dead wrong). Night Trap was released on October 15, 1992, five years after its filming. It in fact shares the same release date as Sewer Shark (and also the Make My Video series, though I don’t know when they were filmed).

In 2014, ex-Digital Pictures founders attempted to kickstart an HD re-release of Night Trap on modern consoles. They claim that Night Trap was shot on 35mm film, so it could quite easily be remastered to at least HD. Unfortunately the Kickstarter was poorly promoted and suffered several problems that made backers suspicious, so it was ultimately unsuccessful.
Controversy
In 1993, Night Trap and Mortal Kombat (both games on Sega consoles; the SNES version of Mortal Kombat was heavily censored) were the center of a Congressional hearing concerning mature/violent content in video games. Most of the Night Trap controversy centered around “the bathroom scene” (roughly 13 minutes into the game) where Augers capture a character and kill her if you don’t intervene and save her. Senators appear to confuse her death as the game’s objective.
The concern was largely based on the fact that throughout the 80s, video games were predominantly played by children. Senators disregard the idea that by 1993, those children could be late teens or even adults, and also the fact that the average age of a Sega CD owner was 22.
Nintendo appears to use the controversy as an opportunity to disparage Sega and position themselves as the more family friendly of the two. A reporter claims that Nintendo was often the one providing media with footage of Night Trap. Nintendo would later allow Mortal Kombat 2 to be released on the SNES uncensored, so I guess it didn’t work but then again Sega barely exists anymore so who’s the real winner
Digital Pictures remains butthurt about this to this day, promising in their Kickstarter that their HD remake would never appear on a Nintendo console. Grow up guys, even Sega got over that.

For my video I wanted to insert the game’s plot cutscenes but had trouble finding them unaltered. There was an “all cutscenes” collection from 10 years ago on YouTube but they were low quality. There were several “movie edits” that processed the cutscenes for upscaling and cut them together to resemble a film more closely but I didn’t want to use those. I just wanted the game to speak for itself.
While I used a longplay for some clips, longplays of Night Trap don’t contain every cutscene because the nature of the game requires you to leave the plot to catch Augers, especially during a perfect playthrough. Rather than play the game several times to capture the plot, I chose to extract the cutscenes directly from the disc - made possible by an existing tool called SGA Conversion and Analysis Tool (SCAT). This has the added benefit of excluding the “miss” sound, which is played separately by the game (old Night Trap movie edits that captured from the game were forced to retain them prior to the release of this tool).
I used the 32X port of Night Trap to extract cutscenes from, but recorded the Sega CD port for gameplay footage because it’s by far the most recognizable version. It seems the 3DO port’s video is considered the highest quality (even higher than the DOS port), but also the frame rate is lower (3DO is 12fps, 32X is 15). The tool worked pretty flawlessly, and claims to work on all Digital Pictures games for all platforms. The tool transcodes to uncompressed RGB24 video and PCM audio which is good but a little overkill. Its interface is also pretty terrible, but the VB.NET source code is provided which is nice.
There were 119 SGA files that I needed to convert so I could edit them. SCAT featured no bulk import/export feature so I opted to modify the source code to include one. In actuality it probably would have been faster to just transcode each file individually, but hey if you ever need a project to bulk transcode SGA to AVI, it can be downloaded here:

As a random sidenote, it’s fascinating to see the video palette working in SCAT. The Sega CD could only support 64 colours on screen at a time, so every couple frames, the palette changes to better accommodate whatever’s on screen at that time. While the FMV produced by the console is infamously crude, there’s a tremendous amount of intelligence in getting it to look as good as it does.
