pondering the very strange treasure island play from 1964 that I found recently and exactly what it would have been like to see the single performance of this thing where there is no smollett at all (trelawney gets most of his lines?) and silver dies at the end and also there is a song about cheese

#thinking thoughts about it.#treasure island #the copy I found was Expensive so I only have the bits of it that I read very quickly for a reference but even so it is So Much #(it's 'the buccaneers' by david magee if anyone's interested)#as a gentlemen liker I really do not know where I stand on this thing #the lack of smollett immediately sets me toward disfavor but I do really like what I read of the portrayal of the other two #in my experience it's rare to see a well-developed trelawney in adaptation and this version of him is quite fun #and being the guy that I am of course I can't ignore all the 'my dear'-ing between them #and the sheer amount of stage directions where they're just ambiently touching each other #and these little interactions where trelawney is giving livesey Boat Advice... it's giving me aubreyad reminiscings...#and did I mention that it's a musical. the cheese song. the cheese song.#my bafflement and confusion and amusement over this thing #has gone on for almost a week now
