John Doe (Herman Kozik x Reader)

OR=Operating Room EMT=Emergency Medical Technician John Doe= Someone whose name is not known GSW= Gun Shot Wound

Warnings: Kozik being called Herman repeatedly, medical talk, mentions of blood, flirting, minor swearing

“What do we got?” You ask as you tie the top of the disposable, yellow trauma gown. “Three GSW’s to the chest.” Hunt announced as he helped you by tying the bottom of your gown. The helicopter was just landing and your hair was flying around your face at the strong gust of wind that came your way. You and Hunt walk over to the helicopter just leaving enough room for the EMT to jump out and help his coworker carry the gurney out. “Caucasian male. Three GSW’s to the chest. In and out of consciousness.” The female EMT yelled over the loud helicopter as the four of you ran towards the elevator. You held down pressure on one of the bullet wounds the best you could. “We need to get him to the O.R now Hunt.” The tone in your voice made him know you were serious. Blood was gushing through your fingers and this damn elevator wouldn't move fast enough. “As soon as this elevator opens we move!” Owen shouts, and right after he did there was a final ding and the doors opened. Rushing through the hallways and all eyes were on you. The Chief raised his eyebrow at you two. “We need an O.R.” Hunt told him when they finally slowed down right in front of all of the OR’s. “Uh- O.R 4 is open.” He said and with that you sent the John Doe into the O.R to be prepped for surgery. The EMT’s disappeared as you and Hunt went into the surgical suite to prep for his surgery. With your scrub cap on along with your face mask you begin to scrub your hands and arms clean of any germs or whatever else could be on them. “This could be a long one.” You mumbled to Hunt before walking through the automatic door to save a John Doe. ** Five hours later and you're finally closing him up- well letting the Intern on your watch close him up. “You think you can handle the Intern Hunt? I'm gonna go see if there's family waiting out there.” You asked him as you began to walk away. “Yeah it's no problem Y/N. Good work.” He flashed you a smiled that you could only see in his eyes. With a nod you ripped off your mask and surgical gown before exiting the O.R, grabbing the leather the John Doe was wearing just in case. Walking down to the waiting room you see a group of bikers making themselves at home. You noticed their leathers and it was the same one that you had in your hand. You walk up to them with a smile. You place the leather down on the table in front of them. “I believe this belongs to one of your guys? He came in as a John Doe.” You straightened your posture as you talked. A bearded, blonde who wore the President patch spoke up. “Yeah, his name is Herman Kozik.” He told you with a charming smile. “Well, Herman survived and is now being stitched up. The gunshots to the chest, two caused complications but we fixed them. One made its way through the small intestine and the other pierced his lung. He's going to be in a lot of pain but he'll live.” You explained everything that just went on in the past five hours for you, to them. “Thank you.” A different man with a low, raspy voice said. You looked over at the heavily tattooed man who juggled a toothpick around in his mouth. “Just doing my job sweetheart.” And with that you turned and walked away, heading back over to the O.R’s to see how your Intern’s sutures were holding up. You were pleasantly surprised to see Owen and your Intern out of the O.R sitting on the bench talking. “All done?” You asked. Your Intern nodded standing up at your presence. “Alright, go be with your friends.” You shooed him off so you could talk to Hunt. “He's a biker. He's got a whole gang in the waiting room.” You snickered as you told Hunt. He furrowed his brows as he looked at you. “And his name is Herman by the way.” You continued laughing as you got up to go find Christina so the two of you could go on your lunch break. Most people would be throwing up after what you just saw, but it didn't phase you. When you're eyes connected with hers she instantly put her charts away so the two of you could clock out for lunch. “How was your surgery?” Christina interlocked her arm with yours as the two of you set off for the lunch room. “It went good, it was long but it felt nice. Haven't been in the O.R in awhile.” You explained as you walked. Christina and yourself continued walking until you caught the eyes of Meredith Grey, who wrapped her stethoscope around her neck before joining you two, grabbing your other arm just like Christina. “Did you hear that there's a group of bikers in the waiting room?” Meredith asks the two of you. ** An Hour Later “So wait. Your guy is a biker and those are his hot buddies?” Christina laughed as she stuffs her face full of salad. You smiled before doing the same. “Well, I need to go check on my patient. Catch you around.” You sent them a wink and grabbed your lunch tray walking over to the trash can throwing out your trash. As you're walking out of the lunch room you accidentally bump into a tall man. You look up and notice it's one of the bikers, with the whole group behind him. “Oh, sorry.” You apologize before looking back to see Christina and Meredith laughing their asses off. You walk out of the room so you can go check on Herman. ** Walking up to his room you peer in to see if Herman is awake just yet, and he is. He lays in the hospital bed with an arm draped over his stomach, looking up at the TV that's mounted on the wall on the other side of the room, his blonde hair a mess on top of his head. Knocking on the door quietly, you slowly step in not wanting to disrupt him too much since that's probably all he's been getting the past hour. His head looks over your way and a smile grows on his face. “Hello. I'm Doctor Y/N. Y/L/N, I'll be your Attending Doctor during your recovery.” You repeat the same lines that you say to every patient. His blue eyes, now dilated from the pain killers that are going through his veins, look over your body. “Do whatever you want Y/N.” He winked at you before returning your attention to the tv. ‘Great a flirt’ you thought to yourself as you wrote down his vitals. Before you go to walk out of the room you turn back around to face him. “Are you up to visitors? You have a lovely group of guys waiting for you downstairs.” You tell him giving him a smile. “I'm always up for an audience.” He grinned and winked at you again. You can't help but roll your eyes, walking out of the room. You see your Intern standing at the end of the nurses station talking to one of his friends. You walk up to them and break up their conversation right there. “Deluca, I need you to tell the bikers that their buddy is all good for visitors. And be sure to let them know the visiting hours for the ICU.” You smile before walking off to go down to the E.R to find yourself another case. You hear the rushing of feet, you always put fear in that boy. ** One Week Later “Good morning Herman.” You beamed as you opened the curtains letting the bright Seattle sun fill the room. He lets out a groan and covers his eyes with his hand. “How can such a pretty girl be so torturous.” He whined before covering his head with a pillow. You let out a chuckle before walking over to his bed. “We want you to start standing up and walking today Herman.” You explained before taking the pillow from his face. “Why don't you just join me in bed instead?” That damn smile made your knees weak, but you kept your defenses up. “And it's Kozik babe.” He winked. You smiled at him before taking down his vitals. “Well, you're going to eat breakfast and then my Intern will come back with a rehab specialist and get you moving.” You gave him a rundown of today's plans and he nodded, not paying any attention. “Did you hear anything I just said?” You asked him laughing. He shook his head. “Too busy admiring what a lovely lady I got takin’ care of me.” He told you smiling. You shook your head. “The nurse will come by with today's breakfast and then we're going to get you walking.” You repeated making direct eye contact to make sure he heard your words. He replied with a nod. “If I agree will you let me take you out on a date?” He asked you grinning. You shook your head, writing down Herman’s vitals. “Like I said yesterday and the day before that. I don't go out with my patients.” You smile as you spoke, walking out of the room before he could come up with another comeback. ** “How'd it go?” You stepped into Herman’s room as you asked him about his first day of rehabilitation. He looked up at you as he sat on the edge of the hospital bed, sweating profusely from the hard work and pain that just went on. “Not too shabby sweetheart. Here to give me my sponge bath?” He smiled from ear to ear as he winked at you. You had to admit, you were slowly breaking under his words. And his smile put a dent in your armour. “Sorry to say that I'm not.” You laughed as you leaned against the glass door. There was something about Y/N’s laugh that made his heart skip a beat. And her smile could stop a train. She were the most beautiful doctor that he's ever seen. Shit, the most beautiful women he's ever seen. The moment Y/N walked into his room and told him her name he was head over heels for her. ** Three Weeks Later “It's your lucky day Herman. You're getting discharged.” You announced as you walked into his room. He groaned at the use of his first name. You knew it got under his skin, which is why you continued to use it. “Thanks babe.” He sat up and threw his legs over the edge of the bed. “You sure I can't get you to go out with me?” He asked you for the thousandth time over the course of the month stay he had. You looked down at your feet with a smile on your face. “I'm technically not a patient anymore, so that rule can go out the window.” When you looked up, and you met his eyes that's when you knew you couldn't say no. That damn smile broke you down. “I guess it couldn't hurt.” You mumbled your defeat. He tossed his arms up in celebration. “Yes!” He yelled. You laughed at his reaction. “Alright, alright. Calm down. You have discharge papers to sign.”

Summary: The boys can’t fly home for Christmas, so they have to find another way.

Word count: 3098

Spoilers & warnings: language and so, so much fluff. Science!Gordon. Artist!Virgil, Minor various ships, mostly background.

Timeline: Christmas Season 3, I have also kinda ignored the main storyline of Season 3. The boys needed a break, so I gave them one. Post season 3B, before Season 3C cos we haven’t seen it yet.

It took ages, I’m sorry, work and an evil muse are to blame. But here be the next bit and I’m happy to have the story moving again. Hopefully I can get this done before Easter ::headdesk:: I hope you enjoy this anyway.

Day Four - Five Billionaires and No Wives

Virgil woke in bed the next morning with no memory of how he got there.

“Good morning, Virgil.”

“John?” His brother was sitting calmly in his pyjamas several beds over. Virgil blinked. He hadn’t drunk that much alcohol last night had he? Last he remembered was lying on the grass with... “Did I fall asleep-?”

The door slammed as Gordon strode in, interrupting the quiet. “Under the stars, bro, snoring like a freight train. I wanted to leave you out there. Would have had more sleep if we did, but goodie-two-shoes Johnny here had us carry your butt to bed.” Gordon had obviously been up early and was dressed in his swimwear, a towel slung over his shoulder. “I’m going down for a swim, wanna come?”

Virgil just stared at his little brother, his pre-coffee brain struggling to put that rush of information together.

Gordon blinked. “Okay, I will ask you that question again later, post-coffee. How about you, John? Want to do some floating Earthside?”

John tilted his head in acknowledgement. “Sure. I’ll see you down there shortly.”

Russet brown eyes darted between John and Virgil. “You gonna keep an eye on this one? I haven’t seen hide or hair of Scott yet, Alan’s run off with Elspeth, and Sam and Liam are heading out with me.”

“I don’t need babysitting.” He had enough neurons to put that sentence together.

Gordon snorted. “I remember saying exactly the same thing a couple of months ago and you picking me off the couch anyway.”

“You did need babysitting. Still do.” Virgil threw off the covers and found he was still dressed in the shorts from yesterday, but his shirt was missing. Okay, his brothers were the best.

“Yeah, well, it took three of us to pick you up and carry you up here.”

“Shows all three of you need to work out more.”

“Or you need to eat less.”

“There is nothing wrong with my weight. It is all muscle.” He patted his belly and suddenly remembered why that wasn’t a good thing to do. Ow.

“You idiot.” Gordon was smiling and frowning at the same time.

John rolled his eyes. “Okay, Gordon, I’ll meet you down there in about half an hour. I think our big brother needs some ‘sitting’.”

Virgil glared at both of them as he rolled to sit on the edge of the bed. Gordon was still grinning when he made his way over and offered his brother a hand to pull him upright. Another glare, but Virgil didn’t say anything, just took Gordon’s hand and pulled himself up with a grunt.

“Yep, definitely need to eat less.”

“Gordon-“

“Yeah, well, I’m off for a swim.” He patted Virgil on the back. “Have fun on the flying fox, bro.”

Wha-? Oh, the zip line.

Virgil was not fast enough to clap his brother around the ears and Gordon danced out of the room laughing.

“Little shit.”

John snorted. “Yeah, but you’ve got to love him.”

“Hmm, maybe.”

That only prompted John to snort again. “You need a hand with your shower?”

“No, I’m good.”

“In that case, I’ll go find us some breakfast.”

“Coffee?”

“And, yes, Virgil some coffee. Now go wash up, you stink.”

“Hey!”

But his smart-ass brother just pinched his nose and made a point of walking past the end of Virgil’s bed and bee-lining for the door.

“You’re an ass.”

“Hee-haw.”

A shower freshened him up and Virgil finally communed with his coffee out on the green. The day had woken with blue skies and glass ocean. They had been so lucky with the weather it was almost too good to be true. The pessimist in him idly threw up the idea of a cyclone between here and Tracy Island and he had to mentally kick himself for even thinking of it.

Because of his recent surgery, Virgil was unable to go swimming, but he chose to climb down to the beach with them anyway. John hovered like crazy because despite Gordon’s smart ass remarks, there was no zip line down to Oneraki Beach and Virgil found himself climbing down a quite steep embankment. But he took it carefully and made it onto the sand in one piece. If he was honest, he was not looking forward to climbing back up.

Fortunately, Scott was nowhere to be seen, so when he took a much needed seat in an offered deck chair, only John was there to hover over him.

Despite his brothers’ concerns he wasn’t stupid and he took the time to rest in the chair and give his hampered body a chance to recover.

“Are you sure you are okay?”

Virgil glared at John.

His younger brother held up his hands defensively. “Okay, okay, I get it. Since you are absolutely fine, I’m going in for a dip. Yell, if you need any of us.”

The glare became flat-eyed. “Will do.”

“Good.” John spun on his heel and jogged down the beach to the surf.

Trust him to have the last word. John wasn’t one to be trifled with. All the brothers knew that. While Virgil might dismissively tell Gordon or Alan to shut up, you never did that to John. You’d be risking a communications blackout isolating you from the rest of the world. His little brother was smart and kind, but he demanded and got the respect he deserved.

Not that Virgil would ever give him any less, it was just that John was a quiet one and the quiet ones were the dangerous ones.

Gordon, Sam and Liam were already in the water and it was abundantly clear that Gordon’s assessment of Sam’s surfing skills was accurate. The man fell off his board more than he stayed on it. He was even wearing some kind of specialised artificial foot, but it didn’t seem to help.

The amusing thing was that he didn’t seem to care either. He appeared to be having the time of his life either on the water or upside down in it.

The laughter bouncing across the waves from the three men was infectious and Virgil found himself grinning and wishing he could join them.

John found himself a quiet area of the beach and began swimming laps beyond the swell. Virgil might have been worried about sharks out here, but they were all familiar enough with the marine environment and Gordon was pedantic about their shark deterrent wrist bands.

Virgil, of course, was wary of his. He might not be a shark, but the wristband was a creepy thing. There had been discussions.

But today he didn’t have to worry about it, because he couldn’t go in the water anyway.

For a while, he just sat and enjoyed the morning. There was barely any breeze, the ocean was as glass as an open ocean could get, he had nowhere he had to be, nowhere he had to rush. Hell, he was tempted to snooze right there and then.

That thought snapped him out of it. He hadn’t had any decent exercise all week. He was turning into a slob. Now would probably a good time to get started on a little rehab.

He eyed the far end of the beach. A walk couldn’t hurt could it?

Pushing himself carefully out of the chair and catching his footing on the dark volcanic sand, he stepped carefully down into the damp zone and started off at a gentle pace.

He had no plans to go any great distance, just towards the end of the beach. He wouldn’t be out of sight so he wouldn’t be breaking any rules of wandering off without an attendant.

A step or two more and he carefully reached down and removed his sandals.

His feet sunk into the fine dark sand and he closed his eyes for just a moment revelling in the feel of it between his toes. How long had it been since he had stood on a beach? Too busy. Too long.

He let all the breath out of his body and gently inhaled anew.

Wriggling his toes, he grinned to himself and started walking.

Gordon was having a great time. Sam and Liam were just good guys to mess around with. They had lent him a spare surfboard and they spent some time chasing the quiet swell. Sam spent most of it under the water, but since that was his native environment, he didn’t appear to care.

Liam had much more skill than Sam on a board and between him and Gordon, a good-natured rivalry began as to who could catch the most waves.

Liam won, but Gordon was laughing anyway and, to be honest, he wasn’t really trying. He was just enjoying the freedom and the lack of responsibility.

John joined them after a decent number of laps and topped all of them even without a board. His red-headed brother knew how to manipulate his body in a low-G environment and bodysurfed like a dolphin.

It left Gordon grinning. Everyone underestimated John...to their detriment. Even Gordon forgot what his big brother was capable of. Space wasn’t just about books and science, there was a definite physical aspect and John worked hard to keep himself healthy.

“John!”

Gordon looked up at the beach to see Scott and Mel standing there, gesturing them in.

Virgil’s deck chair was empty.

Gordon had seen his brother come down with John. Where was he now? A glance up and down the beach found it empty.

What the hell? He didn’t climb back up the hill by himself, did he? Considering Scott was on the beach with that expression on his face probably struck that option off the list.

John, the smart ass, made it to the beach before any of them. That was something that would have to be fixed in the future. Gordon was an Olympic gold medallist and he had a reputation to maintain, after all.

“Where’s Virgil?” Scott was not happy. “He’s not answering his comms.”

“He went for a walk.” John pointed down the beach.

“Well, then where is he?”

John glared at his brother before walking over to the bag he had brought with him and yanking out his own comms. “Eos, location on Virgil, please.”

The AI rattled off coordinates which, when Gordon ran them through the map in his head, equated to...

John pointed down the beach. “He’s that way.”

“Then why can’t we see him?”

“How the hell should I know? Go and ask him.” John matched Scott’s glare with his own. “You do know he is a big boy and can look after himself?”

Scott actually growled at John before spinning and stalking off down the beach.

Oh dear, Virgil was in for it when he got found.

John glared after him a second before turning back to his comms. “Eos, Virgil’s medical status?”

“Last readings all within normal parameters, however, approximately fifteen minutes ago, I believe he took off his shirt, and hence the sensor net in the material. I still have locator and proximity readings, but vitals are patchy. What I do have is within normal tolerances, however I do not have enough readings for that summary to be conclusive.”

John rolled his eyes. “I’m going to kill him.”

“C’mon, John, Virgil needs a break. He only went for a walk on the beach.”

“Tell that to Scott.”

“Scott needs to...” He trailed off at the expression on Mel’s face. “Oh, you didn’t.”

A total lack of innocence appeared on her face. “Didn’t what?”

“Oh, for god’s sake, Mel, really?”

“What?”

Gordon groaned. “It’s the dimples, isn’t it.” It wasn’t a question. “The goddamned dimples.”

Mel shrugged. “He is a great kisser, too.”

Gordon stared at her. “Ergh.” A frown. “I thought you were all about Virgil.”

She shrugged. “He wasn’t all about me. Scott is, uh, nice.” The smile on her face crept up into her eyes.

“Argh.”

“Why, Thunderfish, I didn’t know you cared.” Her grin was devilish.

“Umm...”

But she thwacked him on the arm. “Don’t tie yourself into knots, fishy, I know you’re all moony eyes for the Lady Penelope.”

“What?!”

John snorted beside him and Sam cracked up laughing.

“And don’t you worry your little fins about me and Scott. Was only a little fun.”

“Aaah! I don’t want to hear it.”

Mel laughed at him and drew him into a hug. “You are a laugh, Thunderfish.” She patted his back. “Though I have to say your brother was much happier before he was unable to locate Virgil.”

Gordon snorted. “Scott doesn’t come as a single option. You want the Commander, you’re gonna have to share him with his four brothers. Particularly, Virgil.”

She smirked and put on a seductive smile. “Hmm, all five of you? Really, tease a girl why don’t you.”

He stared at her in shock.

John cracked up laughing and Sam appeared to need resuscitation as he fell all over Liam who was trying to hold both him and himself up at the same time.

“Gee, Fishy, I didn’t know you came in that colour. Did I embarrass you?” Her arm around his shoulders wasn’t helping.

He glared at her. “I didn’t know you had it in you, Mel.”

She snorted. “I have a whole lot in here you don’t know about, Thunderfish.” But she was grinning at him. “Now I have to go keep both your brothers within sight since they have decided to break the rules.”

Gordon stared up the beach and sure enough, there was no sign of them.

A shrug. “You can trust them.”

She reached in and tapping his cheek gently, whispered, “I know, but them the rules.” Her eyes were smiling at him. “He really is a great kisser, you know.”

“You know, Mel. I can live without knowing.”

She giggled. Giggled! He had never heard Mel giggle! And wandered off down the beach after his brother.

John was still grinning like a loon.

Gordon glared at him. “Shut up, John.”

John’s grin just got wider.

It was quiet on the beach. After Virgil got far enough away from his brothers and their friends, the natural sounds of the environment took over and Virgil connected with it.

The tension in his shoulders loosened, his back relaxed and he let out a sigh.

The water hissing onto the sand, the breakers cracking the glass ocean as the swell reached the island. Birds, so many birds, many of them the familiar sounds of home telling him how close they were to Tracy Island.

He found himself longing for that familiar environment. Grandma, Kayo, Brains muttering in the background, Gordon splashing in the pool, Alan’s computer games, even Scott on the phone to Tracy Industries. The sounds of home.

But for the moment Raoul had to suffice.

And it was beautiful.

The beach was a decent length, backed by a rise that led off into the mountain that made the island. The fine sand was soft and curled about his toes and plants crawled down the hill to sprawl all over it. Pale morning glory flowers dotted the foliage. The contrast of light flower, green leaf and dark sand was quite striking and Virgil found himself composing a painting as he stopped and stared at the plants.

A thought and he reached into his pocket, grabbed his phone and spent the next few minutes photographing enough stock for a future painting.

Once he decided he had enough, he took a few shots of the incoming waves, the shoreline and the seascape. So much inspiration.

He continued walking and kept his phone in hand just in case. A large seabird flew off the ocean and up the slope and disappeared into the dense forest.

Hell, even the trees were like those on Tracy Island. Brilliant crimson anthers cascaded over evergreen leaves. A tui peered at him from a low branch and screeched at him before flying off.

He let it soak in.

The beach curved inwards slightly and he followed it around only to find the oddest sight.

Steaming hot water was dribbling from the sand bank. A cloud of barely condensed fog rose from it and the dark sand was stained with mineral deposits.

A hot spring! He crouched next to it. He had seen this volcano erupting, grabbed Melissa Fisher and her team off the volatile chunk of rock. Yet here it was quiet, beautiful and full of life, its potential energy little more than a trickle onto sand on a wave sculpted beach.

He reached out a hand and gauged the heat. It was cooling a little as it sputtered onto the shore and he could touch the pool it created. A convenient rock provided a seat and he sat down, letting his feet drop into the warm water.

His shoulders dropped and his eyes closed.

A sudden need to feel the sun on his skin and he threw off his shirt and dumped it, his shoes and his phone in the foliage beside the spring. The warmth from the sun and the hot water, the roar of the breaking surf, he closed his eyes again and just felt.

The eroded volcanic rock under his fingertips was rough, but as equally warmed by the morning sun as his skin.

It just felt so good on everything.

He sat there for some time, just experiencing it. His mood shifted from one of contemplation to one of joy. Everything was in harmony. The ecosystem hummed around him, the planet playing its eternal concert, a thrum that got into his bones.

A thrum.

A wordless thrum, in his bones, in his incisions, in the soles of his feet.

He opened his eyes and stared out at the ocean.

A spray of watery breath broke the surface beyond the breakers.

A moment later it was followed by another, smaller spray.

Virgil stared, and, climbing to his feet, stepped out of the steaming pool and walked towards the breaking surf.

As his feet touched the churning water the hum intensified, vibrating deeper with an unheard melody.

He kept walking until the water was breaking across his thighs, his clothes soaking wet.

The swell dipped between waves and a dark grey and white head emerged out of the water, as if staring at him. A smaller head did the same a moment later before both once again disappeared below the surface.

A joy washed through his body, the sea singing to him like it never had before.

An exhaled breath, his heart in his throat.

“Well, hello.”

Day 50

AUTHOR’S NOTE: Yes, I’m aware of the numerical/calendar/discrepancy; I wrote this yesterday, then the Internet cut out before I could post it and... heck with it, I wrote this yesterday, didn’t get a chance to post it, so now, you guys can have it.

Great Kraken, if I ever start spouting that wildly optimistic, “you can do it” nonsense, someone slap me. The TLDR is that nothing especially bad happened today (AUTHOR’S NOTE: this would, technically, be yesterday), I just started today on a rather low note.

This morning, I woke up to the all-too-familiar, hung-over, flu-like sensation of my entire body in open revolt. Which is pretty much the standard chemo/radiation hangover/recovery sensation (and Research Coordinator warned me to expect that all the way until Week 10), and not even the worst I’ve felt in the last two weeks. And, like all hang-over-y sensations, it faded by noon, so I did get to have something approaching a normal day (which, at this point, is all I can ask). Still, in that first hour, my outlook was much grimmer than it was the same time on Day 46, and it did make me wonder if my own attitude hasn’t gotten better simply because I stopped feeling physically miserable. And that wasn’t some sort choice on my part; Radiation Oncologist quietly insisted I start taking low-doses of steroids, eventually, they stopped the Captain America serum infusions (sort of, I’ll be back on those soon enough), and I got off temodar, and they stopped nuking my brain, and I’ve been healing from surgery throughout; and I’ve slowly started feeling physically better in the process. And it can not be a coincidence that I’ve also gotten more positive since my body felt less like some sort of alien planet warzone, and then a superfund site, and now just a different time zone. And that got me thinking of how condescending this whole, “You have to be positive” stuff that we collectively dump onto sick people, as a society. You don’t see combat medics asking wounded soldiers, “How about a smile?” Now, it should be noted that this is not aimed at my healthcare providers, who have all treated everyone I’ve seen with genuine kindness and decency (even me, when, in 2002, the cocktail of meds, exhaustion, and recent neurosurgery gave me terrifying hallucinations and made me into a genuinely awful person for a day or two)(GUYS, GUYS, I MIGHT NOW HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO PUT OFF MINOR WRITING PROJECTS; THAT IS AWESOME), it’s just that there is an inclination to tell sick people to remain upbeat and positive, even when that is simply not physically possible.

But that was this morning; I did successfully navigate the world of pharmaceutical orchestration (the Warlocks have ended some prescriptions, told me to swap out some others, and temporarily stop the zofran)(that’s gonna be a nasty one to live without). If it seems like I’m a little obsessive about the whole medicine thing these days, well, yeah. I am. I know from experience that, even with the very best doctors and insurance and the most stream-lined processes, there can be a four business-day delay in getting a renewal, and, when some of these things are actually keeping you alive, well, I really have to wonder how many people die simply because they don’t realize until it’s too late that they no longer have their heart pills. I used to work as an in-home healthcare service provider (this is true); folks, if you want someone in the greater SoCal area (we can discuss specifics later) to make sure Grandma has all her pills organized, supplied, and is taking them, give me a call; for $100 a week (maybe $150), I’ll help save a life or two by figuring out doctor’s orders, pill organizers, and pharmacy renewal rules. I can do that, even if the Captain America serum cripples me.

This afternoon, I did get to the gym, so I guess I can’t gripe too much. I really am going to miss those steroids, but having to worry about long-term addiction and kidney issues still feels amazing. And I went and saw the local barber, a really awesome guy who gave me that really cool “A” razor cut (I’ve posted pictures elsewhere). And I just sat with my dog for a while. I owed him that much, after my protracted absence (in my defense, he’s technically Mom’s dog, but I was chief “Food Guy” for the first three years of his life). I figured, even with my recent lease, I didn’t have enough time not to thank my fellow abyssal dwellers who’ve taken me this far (I also bought him a very expensive chew toy back in Week 2-ish when Mom came out to visit, so I tangibly rewarded him, too). So, not a bad day, even even if started nasty. That was today, though.

Yesterday (again, author’s note, this is technically the day before yesterday) started with meeting Senior Warlock, which went well. He rolled some bones and figured the MRI in two weeks wouldn’t show much, but it would guarantee my place in the Captain America Serum trial slot. I’m definitely not looking forward to that one, my friendly sea monsters; they have me for three infusions a month, and week one of each those doubles down with temodar, and with much, much higher doses of temodar. Research Coordinator quietly shrugged when I suggested that the first week of every month was not going to be fun, at all. Still, focusing on the positive, everyone thinks that I probably won’t experience any new side effects from all the treatment, though existing ones may worsen (which means lots and lots more Gatorade, which does make want to put a corkscrew through my thigh). Still, it does strike me as strangely hilarious to me that, even with his dark mage powers, he seems unaware that my life’s burning ambition is to kick down the door to the chemo ward in two weeks, demand they double the dosage, and juice me up with sweet, sweet, Captain America, Warlock black magic, because, by golly, I am ready to double down on this bet. I dunno; I might just be saying that because I’ve generally been physically feeling pretty good lately; it might an indicator of some serious brain damage when someone starts shouting, “Bring on the misery! I’ve been feeling too good, lately!” One really has to wonder if, after a certain point, Job just didn’t start mooning God and screaming, “Come at me, bro.” Of course, it’s easy to feel that way now, I feel kind of normal now. Senior Warlock also mentioned that they'd sent off the paperwork to get my license renewal started, however, I'd likely have to remain on low-dose anti-seizure medicine as long as I had a valid licence. Which isn't a big thing in the greater scheme of things, but, like every part of a chronic disease, it's just another 5% extra bureaucracy, aggravation, and constant annoyance. That gripe is not aimed at my doctors, it should be noted, but it is really annoying that now I have to go through the DMV with a new medico-legal label/requirement. Still, maybe I can figure that one out, too. Maybe I can get that temporary disabled permit made more permanent (actually, I bet it can, since a GBM diagnosis automatically qualifies for disability assistance)(and again, I am in this thing to win it, and I am not about to hold back in that, which will require me to completely exploit every single opportunity and resource available to me).

Still, even at my most miserable, it feels pretty good looking at that first, 12-month payment on the installment-plan lifespan.

My car caught on fire due to some electrical wiring, im fully comp, and have never claimed before. But sneaky as they are, they have told me that they do not cover electrical wiring faults, which has caused the fire. But the AA who towed my car in has catergorised it as fire damage. Surely they must cover the fire damage. I took it to a repair centre near me, and have asked them to have a quick check, and they also say its fire damage and what not, this has been procrastinated for so long by the insurance company, (claims company rather) that i can't remember what the repair centre has stated. Surely, fully comp covers something like this? THEIR engineers have said that there was no further damage to the rest of the car, but can i trust THEIR engineers? A full check up costs a lot, as they would have to take apart the car ( i believe? ) When i rang up the lady at the claims centre, she had no idea what case i was on, she literally said 'give me a moment to read up on your case' for me, thats a bit pathetic. While speaking on the phone with her not only was she rude, almost shouting at me (as i pressed on further ) . She told me she would send the company policy booklet to show that electrical wiring is not covered, and a letter stating the case was closed and in detail what the whole case is about. A week and a half has gone by (she said couple of days) This is the most annoying thing. She was rude, unhelpful, unwilling to help, and just taking the pee with the whole thing. I just find it sketchy that the letter has not been made, and no further actions or anything has happened (i have also opened another case about another incident - no info .. still) . I think they are just hoping i'd give this up as they are so unwilling to pay out. This is the reason I have insurance. Whats the point otherwise? Sorry for the long read. I have no idea what to do now, can i take it to a small claims court or talk to someone in the city council to further my case? Thanks""

Let me make a very long story short and get right to the questions. I have moved across the United States by myself at the age of 20 with no insurance covered by my parents, nor will they ever if they could. I had a retinal detachment in my left eye. Paid out of pocket for an eye doctor appointment, he freaked out and told me to go straight to the emergency room for emergency surgery since my entire retina was detached. After my surgery, half unconscious too, a social worker got assigned to me because I was under 21 and legally dependent on the state. So the state paid for my surgery. I had a 2nd one too because the first failed. During my 2nd surgery I had cataracts in my eye so they removed the natural lens. And they never replaced the natural lens since they feared the retina may detach again like the first time. But it stay together and I turned 21. So therefore, legally independent by the state. My check up appointment was after my birthday which the front desk of the eye section declared I must pay $80 for every check up visit, which they wanted me to come in every other week. And if I did not pay, I could not go in. Due to my 6 months of surgeries and recover time I had no money, and was not working. I live with my in-laws, and they were taking care of me, but they are certainly not going to pay my medical bills. So here I am now, age 22 and I have been working for about a year. My job does not offer health insurance until you worked for a year, and even then, there is a certain month you can sign up. I have been walking around for over a year without a natural lens, or ANY lens in my left eye. This is in no way like being blind. My doctor had told me that if I got my license and drove, if ever in an accident, I would get in serious trouble because you are not supposed to drive this way. Not that I do, I cannot see correctly so it is wicked dangerous. Having no lens in one eyes messes with your other eye. Hard to explain unless you have literally had this situation before. Sunlight glares into my bad eye, then into my good eye. Same with darkness or bright lights in general. I am actually very blind at night because of this. This is literally ruining my life. I have no money to pay for insurance, or the surgery which can be easily be 10,000 dollars. Is this legal for a county hospital to do? I have never heard of anyone in my situation. Even the thousands of times I have googled and searched. Never heard of anyone in my shoes. What are my rights here? Is there some way I can fight this? Where is my justice? Some of the promises are clearly overblown and result in fairly swift use of the delete button. However, all the research indicates that this is never due to a single factor but to a combination of factors such as genetics, diet and lifestyle. For example, remaining physically active and being part of a close community appear to be crucial. You can't replicate these factors in a bottle.

Some advice looks innocuous because there doesn't seem to be any selling going on. For example, drinking warm water, lemon juice and honey every morning. However, to get the "free report" on the miracle that is lemon juice you have to provide your email address, which is then sold to other snake oil sellers, so that like me, you're soon inundated with pseudo-medical advice.

Remember, most of these gurus have no formal medical training at all, and the minority who do have opted for a comfortable living as medical heretics.

When you see a claim for the benefits of taking magnesium or L-Arginine, check it out on a reputable website like WebMD. You will generally find:

1. The claims are overblown, i.e. there is little or no evidence that the herb, spice or mineral has any appreciable impact on serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease etc.

2. A clinical trial on a small group of patients showed some impact on a minor or rare condition - this is the "kernel of truth" that makes the claim defensible in case of litigation.

3. Overall though, the list of proven uses is much shorter than is claimed.

4. There are risks, for example, for pregnant women, the elderly or people using other medications.

If the sales blurb refers to clinical trials carried out at a university or research institute, check directly on the institution's website. Did such a trial take place, and if so, what were the results?

Similarly, check with your country's food and drug regulator. What advice are they giving about this miracle potion?

Always be wary of the snake oil seller's call to action, which usually rounds off a long and tedious email or video presentation:

1. A stark reminder that your condition is wrecking your life.

2. Orthodox treatments are dangerous or ineffective.

3. You have to take responsibility for your health because your doctors and their mates in Big Pharma don't give a damn about you.

4. The answer to your problems is available at a massive discount but you need to buy within the next 15 minutes.

5. Get your credit card ready.

Of course, if you don't buy the miracle cure there and then, you'll get reminder emails for several days afterwards saying the discount is still available for you alone because "we really care about your glaucoma/rheumatism/varicose veins etc."

When I get emails from the gurus, my approach is:

1. Never accept claims for miracle cures unless or until there is clear evidence to support such claims i.e. rigorous clinical trials conducted by a reputable institution such as a university.

2. Never use any supplements without checking that you really need them, and they work. Then check the ingredients and quality control. Read independent reviews wherever possible.

3. Be wary of paying for any diet or exercise programme until you have seen it in action: be sure that you can commit to it and that it will work for you - physically and mentally. Where possible read independent reviews before parting with any cash.

4. Avoid fads such as therapies, lifestyles or superfoods that have no proven efficacy.

In my family, our approach to health issues is:

1. Have regular check-ups with an orthodox medical practitioner. Increase the frequency as you get older or if you have a long-term condition.

2. Only take supplements if you really can't get the vitamins and minerals you need from your diet, such as Vitamin D in the winter, or if your doctor recommends it because of a medical condition or other issue.

3. Use complementary therapies where there is a proven medical benefit and/or where you feel some tangible benefit, such as pain relief, relaxation or de-stressing. Do not use these therapies instead of orthodox medicine, particularly for serious conditions such as cancer or heart disease.

4. If you want to follow a diet or eating plan, find one that suits your likes and life-style. If you want to lose or gain weight, or if you have a condition such as diabetes or coeliac disease, follow proven medical advice for your condition.

5. Follow an exercise plan that suits you, whether it be walking to the shops or running marathons. Exercise should be fun, so find an activity that you can enjoy and commit to. If you can afford it, find a personal trainer who can help you design an exercise programme that works for you and keeps you motivated.

6. If you don't want to eat healthily or do any exercise, be mindful of the potential consequences.

7. If you are a parent or carer, follow this approach for your child or the person you are caring for, as well as for yourself.

If you see an email offering you the elixir of eternal youth, applying a bit of common sense and scepticism could save you £s - and more importantly, do wonders for your health and well-being.

I should say at this point, that I am not a medical practitioner and the opinions I express here are based on a dose of dermabellix common sense mixed with a dram of scepticism rather than on any expert knowledge or extensive research into medical issues.

When I open one of these emails, the typical pitch goes like this:

1. You can't trust the medical establishment - they're in cahoots with Big Pharma to make you ill and keep you ill - type 2 diabetes being the crowning example.

2. Most if not all prescription medicines have dreadful side effects, some of which are worse than the condition you started with.

3. Surgery is a drastic way to make your back/shoulder/knee pain worse.

4. There are various natural remedies for almost every illness known to humanity, but because of pesticides, poor dermabellix quality control etc you can't just get your medicine from the supermarket. You need supplements. And ours happen to be the best.

5. If we don't have a supplement to sell, we'll sell you a cookery book or a set of DVDs

The most pernicious aspect of these emails, though, is the claim that the medical establishment wants to keep you ill so they can make big bucks from your misfortune. Medical practitioners in the US, where almost all my emails originate, may have incentives - for billing purposes - to tell you you're really ill and you need a battery of medications, surgery, physio etc. though I doubt it. But the situation in the UK is very different Here, because of NHS funding and resourcing issues, medical practitioners have more incentive to ration treatment. For example, patients with long-term conditions such as diabetes or hypertension can claim free prescriptions, so what's in it for GPs in keeping patients drug-dependent for life? There is every incentive to minimise the use of surgery and other therapies because of long waiting lists. The NHS even has gate-keeping services to limit demand by offering telephone or online advice. The NHS certainly has no incentive in keeping you ill.
