🎄A Painful Meeting🎄
Here I am with the first part of this month’s themed week in “Lyrical Love”! Today’s subject is a song by the visual kei band R-Shitei, entitled Sentimental and released as lead-track of their first mini-album Occult Jigoku (Occult hell) on 23rd July 2008. This song is one of the most famous themes by the band, fascinating and energetic as few, with a melting and pretty nostalgical subject around it.
THE MUSIC
A soft guitar playing opens the song, in a tender and melodious rock theme, with a light and nostalgical rhythm; Mamo’s voice is warm and heartfelt, fitting perfectly the sound wrapping it, simply and efficient, with an unique passion, enriched by falsetto and piercing notes, building up a suave and melancholic ballad, with an impressive instrumental work.
Lyrics (Romaji)

Lyrics (English)
If you noticed that the leaves have changed colour in this season while I read again your memories An innocent wind pushes them back The dropping bus-stop is still there I don’t know How I met you? Do I have still the “vivien” which I carried until that moment? (I)
As soon as I look back It seems that you are laughing The last time I regret that I was too much silent in the past spring. (II)
What size you think with When the feeling has gone away, my heart got hurt and fell apart A sad vivid face hidden in the hair It has been left like a reflected movie I want to meet you. (III)
Look for the Tenjin Station A passer-by will likely be happy I thought that I could meet you by case Neither that. (IV)
I always wake up from a dream It was not supposed that you were at the next door What about someone else? Someone to tighten to the chest.
I will stay tied to this palm Your warmth, your kindness are overflowing. (V)
What size you think with When the feeling has gone away, my heart got hurt and fell apart A sad vivid face hidden in the hair It has been left like a reflected movie.
It melts with the snow You are distant It becomes sepia Now I will be in there The spring arrives In a shallow dream You are smiling Lips of that day They still remain I want to forget I love you even now Even if you have another life I want to meet you again. (VI)
THE WORDS
Written by the singer Mamo, this song features a pretty wide layout, linked to the style, closer to a thoughtful and heartfelt sensation lived by the protagonist. The main theme of the song is revolving around a meeting, a really painful one. It brings pain because the protagonist met someone in a common place, in a common time, but afterwards they departed and never got to meet again. This empty left by her presence generates in the protagonist a desire of meeting her once again, even if now their lives are different and more distant. And now... let’s analyze the song!
I) The text starts with the protagonist who tells to his loved one if she noticed that the leaves have changed their colour, a sign that time has passed, while he is reading again her memories (Ki ga tsukeba ha wa irozuki kono kisetsu to tomo ni kimi no kioku yomikaesu), both pushed back by an innocent wind (mujaki na kaze wo senaka osu, there’s an analogy between the leaves and the memories, both going far and dying); then the protagonist talks about a dropping bus stop, likely the place where they met for the first time, which is still there (okurimukae no bazutei wa mada saki no hou) and he wonders how he could met her, as he seems to not know it at all (wakaranai/naze deaetano?) and finally he asks if he still has the living soul which always carried until that moment (ano toki ageta “vivien” wa mada motteru kana?, for describing the living soul it has been used the French term vivien).
II) When he looks back to his past (Furikaereba sugu soko ni), he sees that she is laughing (watteru kimi ga iru ki ga shita) and he greatly regrets that he has been too silent when he met her, in the previous spring (mukuchi sugita koto ato kuyashita kyonen no haru), starting his painful state.
III) In the refrain he asks her what size she thinks with, talking about their meeting (Omoeba omou hodo ni); then he tells that when his feeling went away, his heart got hurt and fell apart (kimochi ga kanareru tabi, kokoro ga itakute utsuita), bringing him to be so much ashamed to hide his face, sad and vivid, in the air, appearing like a reflected movie (kami de kakushi kanashii kao mo azayaka ni utsusu eiga mitai ni nokotte te, the reflected movie is a common image of R-Shitei’s early days) and finally he unveils his true desire: he wants to meet her (aitai yo).
IV) He invites her to look in Tenjin Station and surely a passer-by will be happier than him (Tenshi eki kimi wo sagasu/sugiikunhito shiawase sou de); he continued to hope to meet her by case, but unfortunately it didn’t happen (guuzen kimi ni deaeru nante omotte mo nai no ni ne), reinforcing his sadness.
V) He always wakes up from a dream (Yume kara zamereba itsumo) and realizes that she was not supposed to be in the next door, closer to him (tonari ni iru wa zu no kimi wa inai); so he asks for someone to stay with him, to tighten to his chest, for a strong desire of affection (tano dareka san wa doudai?/mune shimetsukeru); finally he says that he will stay tied to his palm, when he touched her, while her warmth and kindness are overflowing him (Tsunaida kono te ni nokoru/kimi no atatakasa, kimi ga yasashisa ga afuretekita).
VI) After repeating the third sequence, there’s a series of short lines ending the text, like in a stream of consciousness, made of rapid and efficient images; the past is melting with the snow, but she is now distant, while the past days become sepia and he wants to stay there, while the spring arrives like a shallow dream; he sees her smiling, with her lips, remained vivid in his mind and he wants to forget her; but he still loves her and even if she has another life, he wants to meet her once again (Yuki to tokete yuku/kimi ga hanareta/sepia iro ni nari/mou soko ni wa inai/haru ga otozureru/asai yume no naka/kimi ga watteru/ano hi no kuchibiru/ima mo nokotteru/wasurete shimaitai/ima mo aishiteru/umare kawatte mo/mata kimi ni aitai).
An occasional meeting between two people, different and unique, which leaves a remarkable sign in one of them, making the search of the other one as his ultimate goal. A nostalgical and sweet ballad made by R-Shitei, a band which is made of mature vibes, but sometimes fit in doing something more fitting and flowing than the usual.
That’s all folks! See you tomorrow for the next part of this themed week in “Let’s Listen to”!
Thanks for the reading!
