Look, I don’t hate Aelin, and Chaol is nowhere near a fave character, but if you want to insist that Chaol—at any point in the series, but especially KOA—wanted Aelin dead, you better come with receipts.
I have seen way too many people, especially on tiktok aka the queen of misinformation if it were a website, claim that Chaol was the main perpetrator behind Aelin being chosen to die for the Lock in chapter 91. Yet not a single one of them were ever able to back it up with any proof.
Wanna know why? Because that was not at all what happened.
My plot-related issues with the Lock scene notwithstanding, Aelin was always going to end up being the one to forge it. Not Dorian. Her. It wouldn’t have mattered that he was ready and willing; she would never allow it to be him if she could be the one to die instead. No amount of arguing would have changed Aelin’s mind. The Lock voting scene was about when to do it, not who. It was a matter of when Aelin should die, not if Aelin will be the one.
Rowan couldn’t even get her to vote or change her mind. Dorian couldn’t get her to even reconsider who should pay the price. What made any of you think that Chaol would be able the to sway her?
Chaol never wanted her dead. In fact, he was the only person that made it clear he’d rather this didn’t happen at all, that his friends could both live without the weight of destiny. And even if he were to pick to sacrifice Aelin to spare Dorian: why is that such a crime? Dorian is his King; Chaol was the Hand of Dorian’s kingdom, his former Captain of the Guards, and childhood bestfriend. Dorian was probably the person Chaol loved most, up until Yrene.
It was only natural that he rejected for it to be Dorian, both as a best friend and subordinate. Even then, it was an impulsive interruption and nothing more. It was never meant as a slight against Aelin.
And if Chaol was wrong or a monster or an asshole for not choosing Aelin, have at least the same courtesy and energy for Fenrys and Rowan. Two characters who audibly made it clear they would sacrifice Dorian in a heartbeat to save their queen, when Chaol was the one who said he’d rather his friends didn’t have to die at all.
Yet you lot scream and rage at the only character that had the audacity to love Dorian as much as Aelin’s court love her. Why is Chaol punished for the act of loving Dorian above everything, even Aelin, but Rowan (and the rest of Terrasen’s court) praised to the high heavens for being the same for her? Why was it only acceptable to sacrifice Dorian, but not Aelin? Why make Chaol the asshole, instead of just lamenting that they have to this at all?
Not everything is a slight against Aelin. Get a fucking grip. You can be upset for her, but don’t make it everyone elses problem.

I've seen so many people, saying that it was partially Chaol's fault that Nehemia died, because he purpusely hid the information about her being in danger and that he preferred his duty over his relationship with Celaena/Aelin and that he betrayed her. (Which also shows that critical thinking doesn't exist within sjm fandom but mostly tog) People say that even though Nehemia planned her death, he should've told Celaena or Dorian about it, ignoring that Chaol was kidnapped, and the fact that if Chaol really told her the King would have known it was him. But let's think about different scenario:
Imagine that Chaol told Celaena about the danger serrounding Nehemia. Celaena went to see Nehemia, saved her and everyone lives happily ever after, and then what?… What if Nehemia would plan her death once more? What if she then attempted suicide?
Apart from that I think that most people forget about Elena Galathynius role in Nehemia's death. It was revealed in Empire of Storms that she was the one who encouraged her to do so.

I'll defend Chaol till I die idc idc He's so unproblematic and y'all are obsessed with walking red flags so don't come at me.
What is the reason why does anybody HATE Chaol Westfall after finishing the series again?
Did you all skip that part when he whished to be dead instead of surviving? Did you just decide not to read those parts where he literally says that he hates himself? This man deserves nothing but love. He apologized and he made up for EVERY SINGLE THING he did wrong in his life.
Why y'all so bitter tho

"Celaena," he pleased. She didn't move, her stillness the only sign that she'd heard him. And that she had no interest in talking.
What could he ever say to repair the rift between them, anyway? He'd kept information from her. Even if he hadn't been directly responsible for Nehemia's death, if either girl had been more alert, they might have had their own defenses prepared. The loss she felt, the stillness with which she watched him--it was all his fault.
If the punishment for that was losing her, then he'd endure it.

KINGDOM OF ASH (by SJM)
Chapter 48
THE FAMILY REUINION🥹😆😭🫶& MY SOULLL
But when they reached Princess Hasar's battle tent, when they had all gathered around a map of Anielle, they had only a few minutes of discussion before they were interrupted. By the person Chaol least expected to walk through the flaps.
A moment later, Chaol was glad he was sitting down.
Nesryn breathed, "Holy gods."
Chaol was inclined to agree as Aelin Galathynius, Rowan Whitethorn, and several others entered the tent.
They were mud-splattered, the Queen of Terrasen's braided hair far longer than Chaol had last seen. And her eyes ... Not the soft, yet fiery gaze. But something older. Wearier.
Chaol shot to his feet. "I thought you were in Terrasen," he blurted. All the reports had confirmed it. Yet here she stood, no army in sight.
Three Fae males-towering warriors as broad and muscled as Rowan—had entered, along with a delicate, dark-haired human woman.
But Aelin was only staring at him. Staring and staring at him.
No one spoke as tears began sliding down her face. Not at his being here, Chaol realized as he took up his cane and limped toward Aelin.
But at him. Standing. Walking.
The young queen let out a broken laugh of joy and flung her arms around his neck. Pain lanced down his spine at the impact, but Chaol held her right back, every question fading from his tongue.
Aelin was shaking as she pulled away. "I knew you would," she breathed, gazing down his body, to his feet, then up again. "I knew you'd do it."
"Not alone," he said thickly. Chaol swallowed, releasing Aelin to extend an arm behind him. To the woman he knew stood there, a hand over the locket at her neck.
Perhaps Aelin would not remember, perhaps their encounter years ago had meant nothing to her at all, but Chaol drew Yrene forward. "Aelin, allow me to introduce"
"Yrene Towers," the queen breathed as his wife stepped to his side.
The two women stared at each other.
Yrene's mouth quivered as she opened the silver locket and pulled out a piece of paper. Hands trembling, she extended it to the queen. Aelin's own hands shook as she accepted the scrap.
"Thank you," Yrene whispered.
Chaol supposed it was all that really needed to be said.
Aelin unfolded the paper, reading the note she'd written, seeing the lines from the hundreds of foldings and rereadings these past few years.
"I went to the Torre," Yrene said, her voice cracking. "I took the money you gave me, and went to the Torre. And I became the heir apparent to the Healer on High. And now I have come back, to do what I can. I taught every healer I could the lessons you showed me that night, about self-defense. I didn't waste it-not a coin you gave me, or a moment of the time, the life you bought me." Tears were rolling and rolling down Yrene's face. "I didn't waste any of it."
Aelin closed her eyes, smiling through her own tears, and when she opened them, she took Yrene's shaking hands. "Now it is my turn to thank you." But Aelin's gaze fell upon the wedding band on Yrene's finger, and when she glanced to Chaol, he grinned.
"No longer Yrene Towers," Chaol said softly, "but Yrene Westfall."
Aelin let out one of those choked, joyous laughs, and Rowan stepped up to her side.
Yrene's head tilted back to take in the warrior's full height, her eyes widening-not only at Rowan's size, but at the pointed ears, the slightly elongated canines and tattoo. Aelin said, "Then let me introduce you, Lady Westfall, to my own husband, Prince Rowan Whitethorn Galathynius."
For that was indeed a wedding band on the queen's finger, the emerald mud-splattered but bright. On Rowan's own hand, a gold-and-ruby ring gleamed.
"My mate," Aelin added, fluttering her lashes at the Fae male. Rowan rolled his eyes, yet couldn't entirely contain his smile as he inclined his head to Yrene.
Yrene bowed, but Aelin snorted. "None of that, please. It'll go right to his immortal head." Her grin softened as Yrene blushed, and Aelin held up the scrap of paper. "May I keep this?" She eyed Yrene's locket. "Or does it go in there?"
Yrene folded the queen's fingers around the paper. "It is yours, as it always was. A piece of your bravery that helped me find my own."
Aelin shook her head, as if to dismiss the claim.
But Yrene squeezed Aelin's closed hand. "It gave me courage, the words you wrote. Every mile I traveled, every long hour I studied and worked, it gave me courage. I thank you for that, too."
Aelin swallowed hard, and Chaol took that as excuse enough to sit again, his back giving a grateful tinge. He said to the queen, "There is another person responsible for this army being here." He gestured to Nesryn, the woman already smiling at the queen. "The rukhin you see, the army gathered, is as much because of Nesryn as it is because of me."
A spark lit Aelin's eyes, and both women met halfway in a tight embrace. "I want to hear the entire story," Aelin said. "Every word of it." Nesryn's subdued smile widened. "So you shall. But later." Aelin clapped her on the shoulder and turned to the two royals still by the desk. Tall and regal, but as mud-splattered as the queen.
Chaol blurted, "Dorian?"
Rowan answered, "Not with us." He glanced to the royals.
"They know everything," Nesryn said
"He's with Manon," Aelin said simply.
Chaol wasn't entirely sure whether to be relieved. "Hunting for something important."
The keys. Holy gods.
Aelin nodded. Later. He'd think on where Dorian might now be later. Aelin nodded again. The full story would come then too.
Nesryn said, "May I present Princess Hasar and Prince Sartaq."
Aelin bowed—low. "You have my eternal gratitude," Aelin said, and the voice that came out of her was indeed that of a queen. Any shock Sartaq and Hasar had shown upon the queen bowing so low was hidden as they bowed back, the portrait of courtly grace.
"My father," Sartaq said, "remained in the khaganate to oversee our lands, along with our siblings Duva and Arghun. But my brother Kashin sails with the rest of the army. He was not two weeks behind us when we left."
Aelin glanced to Chaol, and he nodded.
Something glittered in her eyes at the confirmation, but the queen jerked her chin at Hasar. "Did you get my letter?"
The letter that Aelin had sent months ago, begging for aid and promising only a better world in return. Hasar picked at her nails. "Perhaps. I get far too many letters from fellow princesses these days to possibly remember or answer all of them."
Aelin smirked, as if the two of them spoke a language no one else could understand, a special code between two equally arrogant and proud women. But she motioned to her companions, who stepped forward. "Allow me to introduce my friends. Lord Gavriel, of Doranelle." A nod toward the tawny-eyed and golden-haired warrior who bowed.
Tattoos covered his neck, his hands, but his every motion was graceful. "My uncle, of sorts," Aelin added with a smirk at Gavriel. At Chaol's narrowed brows, she explained, "He's Aedion's father."
"Well, that explains a few things," Nesryn muttered.
The hair, the broad-planed face ... yes, it was the same. But where Aedion was fire, Gavriel seemed to be stone. Indeed, his eyes were solemn as he said, "Aedion is my pride." Emotion rippled over Aelin's face, but she gestured to the dark-haired male. Not someone Chaol ever wanted to tangle with, he decided as he surveyed the granite-hewn features, the black eyes and unsmiling mouth.
"Lorcan Salvaterre, formerly of Doranelle, and now a blood-sworn member of my court." As if that weren't a shock enough, Aelin winked at the imposing male. Lorcan scowled. "We're still in the adjustment period," she loudly whispered, and Yrene chuckled.
Lorcan Salvaterre. Chaol hadn't met the male this spring in Rifthold, but he'd heard all about him. That he'd been Maeve's most trusted commander, her most loyal and fierce warrior.
That he'd wanted to kill Aelin, hated Aelin.
How this had come about, why she was not in Terrasen with her army ... "You, too, have a tale to tell," Chaol said.
"Indeed I do." Aelin's eyes guttered, and Rowan put a hand on her lower back. Bad— something terrible had occurred. Chaol scanned Aelin for any hint of it. He stopped when he noticed the smoothness of the skin at her neck. The lack of scars. The missing scars on her hands, her palms. "Later," Aelin said softly. She straightened her shoulders, and another golden-haired male came forward. Beautiful. That was the only way to describe him. "Fenrys ... You know, I don't actually know your family name."
Fenrys threw a roguish wink at the queen.
"Moonbeam."
"It is not," Aelin hissed, choking on a laugh.
Fenrys laid a hand on his heart. "I am blood-sworn to you. Would I lie?"
Another blood-sworn Fae male in her court.
Across the tent, Sartaq cursed in his own tongue. As if he'd heard of Lorcan, and Gavriel, and Fenrys.
Aelin gave Fenrys a vulgar gesture that set Hasar chuckling, and faced the royals. "They're barely housebroken. Hardly fit for your fine company." Even Sartaq smiled at that. But it was to the small, delicate woman that Aelin now gestured. "And the only civilized member of my court, Lady Elide Lochan of Perranth." Perranth. Chaol had combed through the family trees of Terrasen just this winter, had seen the lists of so many royal households crossed out, victim to the conquest ten years ago.
Elide's name had been among them.
Another Terrasen royal who had managed to evade Adarlan's butchers.
The pretty young woman took a limping step forward, and bobbed a curtsy to the royals. Her boots concealed any sign of the source of the injury, but Yrene's attention shot right to her leg. Her ankle. "It's an honor to meet all of you," Elide said, her voice low and steady. Her dark eyes swept over them, cunning and clear. Like she could see beneath their skin and bones, to the souls beneath.
Aelin wiped her hands. "Well, that's over and done with," she announced, and strode to the desk and map. "Shall we discuss where you all plan to march once we beat the living shit out of this army?"

omg, i thought i was the only member of the chaol defense squad <3 he's made mistakes, yes, but he's far from being the villain people make him out to be
Chaol has the BEST and most realistic arc in the series and people HATE him for it. Chaol starts as a nobleman's son and Captain of the Guard who believes very strongly in honor and justice. He believes in the goodness of his home, that if you act right then good things will happen. And he gets so much shit CONSTANTLY for not trusting Celeana but when he meets her, she's a literal teenage criminal bossing him around for not letting her do whatever she wants.
He doesn't know who she is- or what she is. And while I don't think he ever approved of Endovier, I also think he thought she deserved to be punished for all the killing she did. Celeana spends half of HoF thinking about how revolted he was by how she killed Grave and Archer, how Chaol was not that kind of person.
They both want the other person to be someone they're not- that doesn't make them bad people. Celeana is always absolved for wanting Chaol to be a different man but she KNOWS all through CoM who he is and what he believes in and she goes into it anyway because she doesn't want to really think about it. Chaol is a good man- what the world ought to be.
But Chaol also grew up in Rifthold and his dream is to serve his home, his people, and his king- which is not compatible with who Celeana is. She's in denial all through CoM thinking she can escape and take her with him and it's very reminiscent of her relationship with Sam. She can win her freedom and be nobody at all with this man who she loves deeply, but she also can't be honest with.
And while she's gone working through her trauma and her destiny, Chaol is still in Rifthold on a knife's edge. Dorian is mad at him, he's trying not to know ANYTHING to keep both Celeana AND Dorian safe, and he's still clinging to the belief that if he does the right things, everything will work out in the end.
Which of course, isn't the real world. So now we're in QOS and Chaol is, narratively, where Celeana was in the very beginning of HoF. Filled with self-loathing, blaming himself for things outside of his control and realizing he was manipulated by people he trusted. Being in his head sucks because he keeps thinking he is an oath breaker, a traitor and a bad friend and he deserves to suffer.
But Aelin is not his queen- he serves Dorian. Why should he bow and scrape for her? Especially when she strolls in and basically tells him he's worthless, he's stupid, and he needs to hand over his clandestine operation to her while she keeps endless secrets AGAIN? I'm like, 300 pages in and every time she and him argue, she threatens to burn the city to the ground which is his greatest fear. And he STILL DOES EVERYTHING SHE WANTS ANYWAY. He still tells her how to bring back magic, knowing she might destroy them all. He still helps her rescue Aedion knowing she might kill Dorian (which she tries to do, and I'm not saying she's wrong for it, but it's the only thing he's asking her not to do).
I'm not finished with the book yet but like, Chaols arc is so interesting to me and what I'm learning is the fandom doesn't REALLY like flawed characters as much as they say they do. I have an ask about how Rowan never pushes back against Aelin- but Chaol is and everyone hates him for it.

i think everyone who’s been in fandom long enough has that character or short list of characters that they’d defend to the ends of the earth. for me, chaol westfall is one of them. it’s been like 5, 6 years at this point and i’m still astounded that sj/m would use him the way she did. i mean, i really shouldn’t be, considering the way she used nehemia, sorscha, nesryn, and yrene---as whitey’s best friend and ship fodder for white men before they either died or fucked off into the ether of narrative irrelevance.
but really, the lack of respect sj/m had for chaol after c0m, and ESPECIALLY after he started using a wheelchair, is disgusting. on a basic authorial level, it’s so unprofessional and amateur of sj/m to just shove aside a MAIN character because she decides she likes rowan better. if she really hated him that much, she could have written him out of the books organically or given him character development rather than weave in her hatred for her own character so obviously into the story. it’s revolting how easy she made it for the fandom to openly shit on him and his entire arc, and how comfortable the fandom has been with wishing for the death, humiliation, and/or healing of a disabled and queer-coded man for years. and knowing the fandom, if lucien hadn’t been retconned into a moc, they’d do the same thing for him if it didn’t make them look racist (regardless of the fact that lucien too is disabled). i’ve literally never seen so much disrespect from a creator for their own characters aside from the writers of game of thrones. sj/m’s lack of authorial integrity not only damages her characters and stories, but it also shows a complete disregard for fans who were rooting for those characters. she endorses the fandom hatred and sidelining of these characters and thus their fans with her writing.

heya!! :D if you're still doing the ship asks: what is your absolute favorite ship? what ship do you hate most? what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from? is there a ship that you used to ship, but don’t anymore? ✌️
hello!!! i'm sorry this took a bit to answer i struggled some with the last one lol
what is your absolute favorite ship?
i'll probably have to go with belle and beast from beauty and the beast simply bc they've been with me so long and i always come back to them and adore them
what ship do you hate most?
i don't actually truly hate any ships i think (unless they're super icky of course) but the first one that came to mind was mary and francis from reign and like..... i just could never get behind them lol
what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from?
belle and beast from beauty and the beast!!! i love them more than i'll ever be able to express
is there a ship that you used to ship, but don’t anymore?
this one was hard for me bc usually when i ship something it's for life and i honestly couldn't think of any that i don't truly ship anymore but i guess i'll go with chaol and aelin from the throne of glass series. they were cute when they were canon imo but after everything that's happened (specifically something during tower of dawn uwu) i just can't see them together anymore, which isn't a bad thing bc it just means they've had some development and changed and that's cool!! but i still do sometimes like to look at old fanart and such and remember them the old days lol

Can I just love on Chaol for a minute?
His honor was everything to him.
He literally gave up everything he was and walked to Adarlan as a child so he could serve his kingdom. So of course it takes a huge jolt to make him not want to honor that path he chose.
He simply is blinded by that loyalty to the king, who he thinks is the ultimate authority whose will must be best for the kingdom, until Nehemia is murdered. He may waiver when making judgments but ultimately obeys orders as they’re given.
But even after the king loses his loyalty, the kingdom retains it along with Dorian, Chaol’s true king. And he thinks Aelin means to threaten that. So of course he’s bitter and resentful towards her. She also kind of tried to kill him and broke his heart too.
But them conspiring together at the end of QoS — when he worked with Aelin and was willing to sacrifice his life to rescue Dorian — was the beginning of him truly growing and learning how to give himself to the cause of the greater good without blindly following others. Don’t forget that he came up with the final plan for how they’d separate the king and Dorian.
His leading of the rebels for two books led up to this final switch which clicked in him.
And then ToD was such a wonderful continuation of his much-needed emotional healing, spurred on by his perceived need for physical healing.
And literally all of his interactions with Dorian give me life. They are the purest. And that unconditional love, friendship, and loyalty gives me goosebumps.
So sure, he has his flaws, but he’s such an emotionally driven, dynamic, loyal character who deserves more love from this fandom.

I can't believe that people who call themselves lovers of Throne of Glass can actually come up with these conclusions. You haven't really tried to comprehend the whole point of his character? Yes he messes up, but he gets up and tries to be a better person. Unlike other characters that give themselves reasons for their atrocities to appear more confident. No this is not a slander to anyone because every character is unique and teach us a lesson.
As far as I recall, Rowan told her she is useless and punched her in the face. True gentleman. Yes later he regrets it all, but at the same time would he if he didn't fall in love with her?
Dorian and Chaol's friendship is the most purest thing in this whole series.
Ex. 1 They love each other unconditionally. In Heir of Fire little Aelin asks if Dorian wants to be her friend because he seemed lonely. And what Dorian told her? That he already has a friend and deep inside knows that he will always protect him
Ex 2 If 'I love you' doesn't explains it all I don't know what will
Ex 3 Chaol knows that Adarlan is deeply corrupted and the only way to save the county he loves is to protect Dorian. And all of his sacrifices were worth it.
I don't know how could you think that Chaol is abusive. First of all, he is a child of domestic abuse. His father threw him out of his house, in the time of the deadliest winter, punched him and let him found the way to Rifthold by himself. All by the age of 13. And later he doesn't let him see his mother that deeply loves him and he pushed it down because he is still hurt by that. He even said 'thank you' to Yrene when she told him it wasn't his fault and felt something break in his heart.( You would know this if you have read Tower of Dawn)
And now for the Aelin monster part. He didn't DIRECTLY told her that she is a monster. Later in ToD he said that she wasn't one but he was in a bad mental state so he saw her that way. I understand him because she made so many promises and actions to him that were shattered. It's okay to paths to change but they didn't really discussed their relationship. In a way her actions regarding Valg princes she defeated did caused the whole Sorscha execution. And as a result he was left with survival guilt and PTSD. So she comes back and tell him it's his fault, as a human with no magical powers, to left Dorian. What could he possibly do? Only get himself and Dorian killed. Technically she could tell them that Rifthold is in danger but as we all know, she likes to keep informations to herself. So when he does that exact same thing, she threatens to burn him and his whole city. Little bit paradoxical. And what I want to add is that Aelin never apologized to Chaol for trying to kill Dorian and probably never told him that Nehemia wasn't his fault at all.
The main problem in this Chaol hate is that people hate realistic characters because they portrait what they are, but forget that we should look up at them and actually learn from them. And Chaol deserves the whole world because he is a person that never knew unconditional love from his family, lovers (except Yrene) or anyone else. So therefore his birthday should, infact be February 14. <3
Chaol disgusts me, stop with the birthday thing he deserves nothing. How can you even like Chaol when there’s Rowan and dorian ??? I never understood how could smol bean Dorian even be his friend. I can’t believe there’s people like you, hated his annoying ass when he called Aelin a monster, the audacity.
There’s a lot to unpack here 🤣. First, it’s a book, calm down. It’s okay if you don’t like him, I also don’t like some characters but I don’t go to an obvious fan account to try and stop them from talking about them. My url is westfall-castle. Were you expecting me to hate him?
Then, there’s Dorian who I adore and Rowan who I like… what does that have to do with Chaol. He’s there and I also love him, what’s the problem? Why should I hate one to love the others?
About Dorian and Chaol being friends, i don’t even know where to begin. I’m speechless and intrigued??? Why should Dorian not be Chaol’s friend??? I even think they had lover chemistry. He’s the most loyal person around him, even Aelin tried to kill him (I know that it was “a mercy” but come on man, if it wasn’t for Chaol and Nesryn there wouldn’t even be a Dorian rn, mercy or not, did you casually let that slide cause you were biased?
About the whole Aelin being called a monster thing, I have read and reread that chapter a lot of times because it’s so controversial and I have found out that people who are neutral with the POVs are likely to understand Chaol’s character better. Haven’t you ever gotten the feeling throughout the whole series that the narrative is biased favouring Aelin?? (Which is normal bc she’s the protagonist) But in this particular scene we are reading her point of view and readers are likely to be swayed into taking her side blindly. Particularly if she’s a character that you love. Try to read it from a neutral perspective and you’ll see that what Chaol is saying is not so irrational or mean spirited.
Besides, I never understood this, Aedion calls Lysandra a bitch and humilliates her by throwing her naked to the snow, Rowan literally punches Aelin in the face and no one says nothing but Chaol calls her “monster” INDIRECTLY and suddenly it’s the worst insult ever????

Please be aware that skipping Tower of Dawn means skipping a whole book with Sartaq in it. And that is something you do not want to miss. 😌
