[SIZE=1][b]Name:[/b] Jess. [b]Age:[/b] 20. [b]How did you find us?:[/b] I hate this question. [b]How did this happen?:[/b] Chase and Fallon refused to kill him.
[b]Name:[/b] Nathan Eliot Travis. [b]Nicknames & Aliases:[/b][LIST] [*] Nickname: Nat. (Earns some responses at times.) [*] Nickname: Nate. (Earns less responses than Nat.) [*] Nickname: Travis. (Responds to this!) [*] Alias: Nathan Reese. [/LIST][b]Age:[/b] 42. [b]Date of Birth:[/b] July 31st 1969. [b]Gender:[/b] Male, defiantly a male. [b]Sexual Orientation:[/b] Straight. He’s not exactly looking right though. [b]Occupation:[/b] Works at Resurrect-R-Us.
[b]Nightly Raising Limit:[/b] 2 on his own, 3 with help from another animator. [b]Standing Rising Kit:[/b][LIST] [*] A sacrifice. Which is usually a chicken, sometimes a goat, or even his own blood. [*] A ceremonial knife. His knife is a simple hunting knife. [*] A jar of ointment. Which is basically blended Rosemary, Cloves, Sage, Thyme and graveyard mould. [*] Salt. [/LIST]
[b]Powers:[/b] [LIST]Nathan is an animator. Which means he was born with the power to raise the dead from their graves prior to the deceased soul leaving its body and moving on into the next life. It’s not as easy as it sounds either, there’s no waving a magic wand and saying a few words and hey presto, a zombie appears. An animator’s job is more ritualistic than that. – Nathan: Which is probably why it pays as much as it does. – Unless they mess up that is, but nine times out of ten, nothing bad happens.
While he was born with the power in him, he still needs some tools for the trade. Those include, and I kid you not, chickens or goats and at times he’s even needed a pig, as the summoning involves a sacrifice. The older the zombie, the bigger the sacrifice, and since he doesn’t like ruining his jeep with farm yard animals, Nathan tries to keep it to chickens and the odd goat. Nathan also needs the zombie’s name in the ritual, the full name is best but if he’s pushed then the given birth name will do. During the ritual, Nathan circles the grave with the blood of the sacrifice, ‘drawing’ a circle of power. Now, normally he’s the only person in that circle when he raises someone, but at times relatives of the deceased want to do things or ask things so Nathan makes them stand behind the grave marker before feeding the zombie blood and then giving the other person a chance to ask what they want. As a newly raised zombie has no memory and needs blood fed to them to regain their knowledge of their former life, Nathan gets through the basics first and hopes to God that anyone else inside the circle with him would be ballsy enough to disrupt the ritual.
So, he circles the grave with blood and power by picturing a glowing circle in his mind, it’s a double edged sword. Dead things can’t get out and dead things can’t get into it without him breaking the circle. With that done he dabs the blood of the sacrifice on his forehead, cheeks and heart, then repeats the motion with the ointment before smearing the headstone with both blood and ointment. The chant he then has to say is pretty basic [i]“Hear us, (corpse name). We call you from your grave. By blood, magic and steel, we call you. Arise, (corpse name), come to us, come to us. (corpse name X2) come to us. Waken, (corpse name), arise and come to us.”[/i] With that done, the dead literally rise as the earth covering the zombie rolls away allowing it to rise to Nathan’s command. Since the zombie’s just a zombie, Nathan must then prick his finger and let the zombie taste blood to bring back its memories and give him total control. Insta-zombie! – Nathan: Hey! They have feelings now you know. – Questions can be asked and then he can send the zombie back to its resting place with salt and the chant to release them. Then its just a matter of going back to the car and cleaning up.
He also has the minor ability to sense the dead, and occasionally see human souls and ghosts that haven’t moved on. They’re nothing more than shades really, and so he doesn’t give them much attention. Everyone knows if you give ghosts attention, they’ll come back for more and more of it. [/LIST]
[b]Face Claim:[/b] Simon Baker. [b]Description:[/b] [IMG]http://i54.tinypic.com/33o7790.jpg[/IMG][LIST]Nathan? A remarkably stunning male that needs to be in a fashion magazine? Never! He is however 5 feet and 10 inches tall and of average build, though – Nathan: I work out....Sometimes. – he looks a bit bigger than his 160lbs in weight. He can hold his own in a fight though for a time, and I suppose that’s what counts in the end right? Well, he’s also got blonde hair that can be mistaken for mousy brown when it’s wet or under certain lighting, and stunning green eyes and that’s about it.
Oh! You want more, ok. His hands are rough with small scars from his work; those scars turn a little bigger and more pronounced against his skin as you move up to the wrists. Suicidal, psh, never, but it’s often mistaken for such. Tattoos, piercings and Nathan don’t belong in the same sentence. Nathan has nothing in the way of ink work or metal work and has never shown interest in getting things like that done and likely won’t anytime in the future. While he may not have any work done himself, he does take an interest in stuff like that at times. – Nathan: its art, of course it’s interesting. –
Nathan tends to wear suits more than casual clothes like jeans and t-shirts but he won’t rule them out. A nice suit can promote maturity and professionalism, and that seems to calm down distraught clients. Of course, there’s that and the fact that suits are cool. He won’t rule out t-shirts and jeans though, he tends to wear them more when he’s spending time at home or on his day off. [/LIST]
[b]Special Skills:[/b] [LIST] [*] Has a degree in preternatural biology. [*] Has helped in multiple RPIT cases stateside and brought in four killers. [*] A good listener when people need a shoulder to cry on. [*] Can summon a zombie up to 130 years old. [*] Giving blood. Yes, this means he’ll feed vampires in a pinch as well. [*] He’s good with a knife but he won’t ever use it against anyone. [*] Screw your weapons; he has logic on his side. [*] Knows a bit of Spanish, just enough to get by really. [/LIST] [b]Personality:[/b] [LIST]Nathan isn’t a generally moody person, he likes to see the positive side of things rather than the negative and often remains open minded about things around him. Some would say that he’s blunt and cocky at times, but that’s more because when he sees things, he doesn’t always think about what he’s saying until he’s actually said it and getting weird looks from people. When he’s thinking about the situation before him, Nathan can be the polite charmer that can pick up on other people’s emotions and body language quiet well, and will often manipulate people into emotional situations that suit them all. He doesn’t do it to be malicious, he does it to give people a piece of mind because really, he doesn’t like people to be all about the doom and gloom in their lives. – Nathan: I refuse to be that one emo guy in the corner; I won’t let others suffer either! –
So he’s the token smiler and the charmer, and a bit of an odd ball for apparently caring. – Nathan: You forgot impudent, annoying and clever, my dear. Opportunistic at times as well.– You’ve got to earn respect to get it, Nathan’s a fond believer of that and while people may cower and cringe around angry supernatural’s he won’t do it without due course to do so, say like, he’s being paid to do it and only then would he cower like a struck dog. Since his boss signs the pay check, he has to be nice to them, and will often swing from being a fake to a cheeky flirt. –Nathan: The last time I did that, I ended up with knee to the groin. Please don’t paint me out to be something I’m not most of the time. – Nathan will often feel bad for victims of supernatural violence, be it a lycanthrope mauling or a vampire killing, or anything else and if he’s called into help on a RPIT case, he’ll do his best to help and once it’s solved, sink into oblivion with a nice bottle of alcohol.
Yeah, he doesn’t instantly trust anyone either. He may appear like it but he’s always on his guard until he decides that he doesn’t need to hide behind the fake smile, and cryptic puzzle loving mind. Nathan can be impulsive at times, often doing things without telling anyone until he needs help or after the fact because he’s a bit of a masochist that way. He doesn’t often accept help, either in day to day life or working life, but when he does, he obviously feels a need to have it. Nathan tends to keep a lot of emotions bottled up at time, it’s nothing intentional on his part, he just does it unconsciously for reasons spanning back years. Doing this has gifted him with the inability to sleep properly on a night, instead of getting the recommended eight hours; Nathan rarely gets more than four at a push.
He does have a bit of a bad side though and you can tell the difference if you know him well enough. He withdraws into himself and often keeps his thoughts to himself, even when asked to share he won’t do it. He’s the type of person that likes pushing buttons and playing mind games with people so this is a startling difference in his person. He doesn’t get violent and smack people about like some thug on an ego trip, but some of his snappy growled comments will often leave marks that he will try and fix later on when he’s calmed down if he’s presented with the opportune moment to do so. He doesn’t like being angry, isn’t naturally angry, so there’s no real need to leave things fester just to be cruel.
Nathan’s an excommunicated catholic – Nathan: If God loves all, then the Pope is an idiot for excommunicating all animators and necromancers because they can summon the dead. – So he doesn’t have faith like most people that he knows does, thus a Holy item won’t protect him. He’s an Atheist and proud of it. He just doesn’t believe in a higher power because it’s illogical and he won’t believe until there’s proof of said power before his very eyes. However, saying that, you could also label him as Agnostic because if vampires and other supernatural creatures exist, then why shouldn’t a “God”? Now, his views on the supernatural community are a little more logical. Well, since he’s a part of it he can’t complain much about it. He won’t put himself in the middle of angry vampires or lycanthropes because he knows that they have a system of their own. He will however, step in and try and diffuse the situation if there are other humans involved between other beings because it’s only natural for him to help the underdog. [/LIST][b]Likes:[/b][LIST] [*] Puzzles and challenges. [*] Relaxing after a long day with a puzzle book. [*] A nice glass of red wine, or a cup of tea. [*] Risings that go to plan. [*] Walks on the beach. [*] Sleep when he can get it. [*] Helping people out to the best of his ability. [*] Going for a walk if he’s restless. [*] Appearing professional in everything he does. [*] A home cooked meal over fast food. [/LIST][b]Dislikes:[/b][LIST] [*] Sunrises. It means he’s worked all night long. [*] Ankle biting dogs. Have you ever been bitten by one of them? He has! [*] Vampires that thing they’re all that. [*] People that take no badly. [*] Noisy criers. Zombie rising is hard work without the distraction as it is. [*] People that think being ‘supernatural’ is a crime against God. [*] Killing goats for work. He likes to make do with chickens. [*] When his computer doesn’t work, because he has no idea how to fix it. [*] Types of people that spoil movies or books before he reads or watches. [*] A promising challenge turning into a dud. [/LIST][b]Strengths:[/b][LIST] [*] Will be polite if he’s with civil people. [*] Can follow orders, in his own way. [*] Is professional when it comes to his work. [*] Doesn’t drink through the week, that’s saved for the weekends. [*] He’s got a good mind; he just over uses it to the point of abuse. [/LIST][b]Weaknesses:[/b][LIST] [*] He’s anyone’s for a nice cup of tea. [*] Victims of supernatural crime, particularly children. [*] Isn’t that technological advanced. [*] Attitude and trust problems. [*] Bull-headed reckless streak. [*] Can be pretty oblivious to things at time. [/LIST][b]Fears:[/b][LIST] [*] Claustrophobia: He’s tried to get help for this, but there’s nothing to be done. It’s an irrational phobia that makes him terrified of confined spaces. [*] Belonephobia: He’s afraid of needles and will faint if they’re used on him. He’s fine if he doesn’t look but this phobia’s what’s pushed him to avoid many medical experiences than he cares to mention. [*] Being the cause of an out of control zombie of any kind. [*] Being tricked into raising a murder victim from the grave. [/LIST][b]Family:[/b][LIST] [*] Janet Reese: mother : alive. [*] Elliot Travis: father : unknown. [*] Ines Reese: grandmother : alive. [*] Jonas Reese: grandfather : dead. [/LIST][b]History:[/b] [LIST]Nathan Elliot Travis was born in downtown San Diego, California way back in July 1969. He was the surprise – Nathan: More like unwanted but mother never was to hurt people’s feelings. - Birth of female police officer, Janet Reese who before she had found out about the pregnancy, had recently changed her name back to her maiden name after a long year of family and relationship drama that she wanted to put behind her. Nathan was simply the product of a very brief fling with her former husband Elliot Travis and she didn’t know about their child until it was too late and she was screaming blue murder and cursing all males within a thirty mile radius of her. Now, as an unwanted child, you’d think that his childhood would’ve been one full of heartache and misery but it really wasn’t. His mother loved him with every breath in her body and even though she’d given up her badge without thinking about it when he’d been born, she never once let people put her down or her son for that matter. So what if his Grandparents where old fashioned and thought that he should’ve been put into the foster system because his mother couldn’t cope! She would be twice as mean back and just as stubborn as them and prove that she could. Since she was a single mom though, things were hard on her. If Nathan got sick, she would go without sleep and food just to make sure that he was better. If he outgrew any clothes, she would go without stuff for him all the more. The stubborn streak was what cost Janet the semi support of her parents by the time Nathan was three years old, and brought into the young man’s life something that Janet had never wanted. His father.
Elliot Travis was a manipulator, he wooed his mother for months after finding out that he had a son by her and almost a year later, he was back in her bed and in her body as well as her mind. Nathan didn’t like this man from day one and while most children wanted to be like their father and impress them, Nathan did not because at the end of the day there was only enough room in the house for two people. His father had to go. – Nathan: You make it sound so malicious than it actually was at the time. – Nathan started to plot little things at first, typically childish stuff like dumping his father’s wallet into the bin or tossing his car keys out of the window and into the garden hoping and praying that someone would find them or that they’d get buried under garden refuse. He even went as far as switching the setting on the washing machine to shrink Elliot’s clothes. Poor Nathan, he got the shock of his life when his father found him red handed pouring paint on all of Elliot’s clothes just after his eighth birthday, his plan had been to blame the decorators that Elliot had hired to redo the ‘marital room’ – Nathan: Oh lovely, I think I’ve just been sick in my mouth. - If it ever came about. Elliot beat Nathan into submission both physically and also mentally. He swore that if Nathan played anymore tricks, that Nathan would be made to watch Elliot hurt his mother and that alone put Nathan back in his place for many years to come. Of course the occasional beating that was brushed off as accidents helped Elliot control Nathan, as well as the threats towards Janet’s safety and wellbeing. It all stopped by the time he was fourteen thankfully, but it would be one of those memories that Nathan would keep for the rest of his life.
He’d been suffering at school, insomnia during the night and headaches and nausea, the inability to hold down food for more than five minutes before running to the bathroom, had affected his grades and performance on a whole as well as his life. His mother was worried, almost frantic that something was seriously wrong with her son, but Elliot didn’t care. He tried to calm Janet down but she had none of that and called in the grandparents. Nathan had an alright relationship with them, they neither loved him or hated him and defiantly didn’t try to beat him like Elliot did. His grandmother took an interest immediately when she found out that he hadn’t been sleeping or eating. Granny Ines put her foot down so hard when Nathan complained that he wasn’t hungry or lied when he said that he was going to try and sleep. Sure it made her angry but what really infuriated the dear old soul was the time when she’d come to give Nathan some clothes to put in his wardrobe – Nathan: I remember that night. Mom was on a date and they were babysitting. - And saw the bruises on his ribs and back. Nathan broke and told her every single detail, and at fourteen years of age, it was hard to ignore [i]the look[/i].
By the time Elliot and Janet returned, Nathans Grandfather Jonas was waiting. Jonas at the time knew everything – Nathan: Well, not everything. I didn’t tell them about me trying to get rid of Elliot in the first place – and just like Ines, he was furious and simply set the big old German shepherd dogs he kept around the back of the house on Eliot to scare the live out of him. Hex and Hooligan did their job, but what was worse, Ines told Janet the whole sordid tale and Nathan’s mother saw red. In the following days, Nathan enjoyed peace. Elliot was out of his life – Nathan: Go, go gadget restraining order! - And in an amusing turn of events, Nathan had his grandparents around in his life more often and his mother had her parents back. All was well, until a year or so later when Jonas suffered a heart attack which proved too much for the seventy two year old and slowly killed him. Nathan shouldn’t have been listening in on the brief conversation between his grandparents, but the talk of being brought back and his grandmother agreeing had caught and held his attention in its poisonous grasp and still weighed heavily on his thoughts throughout the following day into the next until Ines informed him and his mother that Jonas had passed away. The look that she gave Nathan though, removed any idea that he’d not been caught spying and listening in.
After Jonas’ funeral, his grandmother drew him aside. She explained...things to him. She was a long retired vaudun priestess, having left her religious beliefs behind when she’d found her true love and could bring the dead back for brief periods of time. Monsters from fairytales and movies were real and lurking in the shadows preying on people and the world was in for a very big wakeup call someday. Instead of brushing her off as a distraught widow, Nathan believed her, he could sense something about Ines now that he hadn’t been able to sense before, and he begged her to train him as her apprentice and seeing something in the young one, his grandmother agreed. Thus, at the age of sixteen, Nathan Travis’ mind was opened to a world bigger than the one that he thought he knew. Oh, Ines poked and prodded that spark in Nathan and helped him grow in his power and never gave him a break. She wasn’t the best mentor – Nathan: Her words, not mine. She said them repeatedly. – But she wasn’t exactly the same as Nathan was. He’d been born with this power, but she couldn’t work out how he’d got it since Janet hadn’t been born with it. However, they rarely sat down and brooded about things in the past because there was always something new that she could teach him and by the time he was twenty one, he’d brought back his first zombie on his own and Ines declared that there was nothing else to teach him.
What could a young animator do in a world that didn’t accept the supernatural? Vampires and were-creatures? He knew that they were there thanks to his grandmothers training and her lessons. He could now make out the souls of recently dead and lingering ghosts if he focused hard enough. He was at a loss, and even though he knew things that not many did, he hid away. Got on with life and moved to New York, then when he got bored with New York, he tried his luck in New Orleans a few years after in 1995, bouncing back to San Diego three times a year to see his mother and Ines when he could. It was great. For awhile he forgot that he could bring back the dead, for awhile he was normal. Then the supernatural world came out of hiding in 1997 and everything changed. Vampires where hunted, lycanthropes where run out of jobs and lynched in the streets, supposed “psychics” and other people that worked with magic where arrested. It was bad times for everyone and people where scared but in 2000 supernatural became legal. It still didn’t stop people from being scared and angry. – Nathan: They had a right to be as well. I’d have been scared if I hadn’t known before hand. -
That was eleven years ago, in that time Nathan’s moved from New Orleans to San Francisco, from there to Atlantic City, and to Toronto plying his trade as a freelance consultant for RPIT teams and anyone needing their formerly alive loved ones returned for a little while, never really running with the ‘’big dogs’’ in reanimation until 2006. By that time he was in trouble, up to his eyeballs in debt and needed the money that a proper position in an animation firm could get him as well as signing himself up as a stable retainer for the Toronto RPIT teams. It took him nearly five years to dig himself out of debt and save up for another move. Outside of San Diego growing up as a kid, five years was the longest time that he’d ever stayed in one place and it was starting to get to him.
Nathan would’ve ended up in another city if he hadn’t heard from an English vampire about this quaint little city England. Jackford. He was told that it was one of England’s supernatural hotspots, and surprised that it wasn’t London, or Cardiff or any of the more commonly known places. Since it was overseas, Nathan had to wait another year to sort through paperwork and stuff to move overseas, while researching Jackford and in February of 2011, early he actually made it to England! Well, London really but close enough to his final destination. –Nat: Now I’ve just got to secure a job and a home and not be stuck in a hotel for the rest of my time here. – It’s now early March, he’s finally made it to Jackford and he has no idea what’s going to happen next. Migrating from Wix to WordPress can be done in several ways, giving new and better options for Is there any recourse if you only have one solution and it does not work You'll be stuck with it for the rest of your life, and you'll either have to buy a new domain
Therefore, the more options you have, the more likely you are to succeed. For your convenience, we have provided you with three easy ways to accomplish the task:
Manual Migration
Semi-automated Migration
Paid Migration
1. MANUAL MIGRATION -
Pages and posts are migrated manually one at a time, which is the most common migration method Therefore, it is the most efficient method of migration, but also the most time consuming. Copying and pasting content from Wix to WordPress is as simple as copying the content from Wix and pasting it into any text editor.
By manually moving the site, you can be sure that every piece of content is transferred to the new WordPress site without having to switch from Wix to WordPress - it's the best way to go. If you have more than 25 pages and posts, this method can be tedious.
Perform the following steps for manual migration:
Step 1: Create Post and page-content-
For small websites, manual migration is the best and most reliable way to migrate. To get started, you need to create pages and posts on your website. Copying and pasting will speed up the process.
You can create pages and posts manually in the WordPress admin dashboard by clicking the "Add New" menu under Posts and Pages. The Bulk Page Creator and Quick Bulk Post & Page Creator plugins allow you to create pages in bulk.
Step 2: Copy and Paste Content -
You will need to copy and paste the content from Wix pages and posts into WordPress pages and posts after they have been created. Moving the media files manually is also required. Save the media and manually upload it to the appropriate page or post. You also need to make sure that all internal links of the images point to the correct pages of your WordPress website.
There are some advantages and disadvantages to manual migration.
Advantages -
Ensures that every piece of code is relocated.
As the process progresses, you will be able to review your contents.
Disadvantages -
Time consuming
This method is not suitable for larger websites (more than 500 posts and pages).
2. Semi - automated Migration -
If you have a large website with a large number of posts and pages and it is not possible to move those pages or posts manually, you can automate some of the processes. Apart from saving time, automating tasks also reduces the chances of making mistakes, resulting in a faster way and even without errors.
Below are the steps for automated migration:
Step 1: RSS feedback to import posts.
Several blogging platforms, including Wix, offer RSS feeds for the blog that we can use to automate the process of migrating our blog posts. We can use Wix's RSS feed to automate the process of moving from Wix to WordPress.
For starters, save the Wix RSS feed to your computer. Here is a link to the Wix RSS feed:
You can do this by clicking on the RSS button on your live site. It will open as an XML file in a new tab. Save this file on your computer. Images are not included in the RSS feed, so we need to import them.
Make sure your WordPress default importer is set up before importing the RSS feed from Wix into WordPress.
From the admin panel, select 'Import from the Tools menu'. Under RSS, click 'Install Now' and then click 'Run Importer'. You can import an XML file by selecting it and clicking the 'Upload and import file' option.
Step 2: Convert words into pages.
Pages from Wix cannot be imported into WordPress using an automated tool. Unlike WordPress, Wix does not allow you to export HTML pages.
Therefore, we need to convert pages manually. To copy the content from Wix to a WordPress site, you can use the Wix Bulk Page Creator. Before moving to the next step, you can also fix the formatting issues with the content and links.
Step 3: Check images and other media links.
If you want to import images manually, save them to your computer, then upload them again and fix the links. If you want to do this, you can use the plugin Import External Images. Saved posts will be scanned by this plugin for IMG tags and processed according to the options you choose.
You need to install and activate the plugin.
Start by doing so at Media Import Images.
Adjust the settings to suit your needs.
When you are done, click on “Save Changes”.
There are some advantages and disadvantages of semi-automatic migration.
Advantages -
As a result, this method is more efficient than
For larger websites, it works perfectly.
Disadvantages -
Since we are automating some steps, some data may not be displayed.
There are a few steps that are performed by a machine, so check them once.
3. Paid Migration -
Online site migration services like cms2cms.com are widely available. It is possible to move from one CMS to another CMS at a reasonable price. On this page you will find a list of prices for cms2c.
If you want to migrate your website from Wix to WordPress, these are the best options if you do not want to spend a lot of time. In this case, you do not have to worry about anything and your work will be completed perfectly.
CONCLUSION
However, it's well worth the hassle of moving from Wix to WordPress. If you want to do a lot of customising, adding functionality and handling the data on your website without restrictions, this is the For those of you making the transition, we hope this migration guide will be helpful.

the bachelorette, season fourteen, episode one: i have opinions on greek yogurt
So they had to go and start this season by salting the wound of Becca and Arby’s breakup, didn’t they?
Welcome back to Romance vs. Reality, I’m your lead and only blogger, Amanda. Kill me now, we’re here for the fourteenth go-around of La Bachelorette, a carousel made up of social media participants and erectile dysfunction specialists. Our princess this season is Becca Kufrin, a last name I struggle with for no specific reason other than I just feel like I’m emphasizing the wrong syllable. Coming after Rachel, The First Black Bachelorette and Resident Queen Regnant of this blog1, and her, well, disaster of a season, I’m terrified.
I’m going to do a full analysis of our Mantestants later on, but I’ll put it frankly: I am not excited. I am newly single, and man. Pickings are slim out there. It’s dangerous waters, y’all. And I live in a city of like, seven million people. I can understand now why people find the first person they can in high school and piss on their legs for forty years2. Becca, however, dodged a bullet in this case, because Arby remains and always will be human trash. Oscar the Grouch literally lives in a trash can and is looking to get rehomed because of the association, maybe somewhere not on Sesame Street.
Arby’s legacy has impacted Sesame Street. And Oscar the Grouch is notorious for loving trash. I mean... same? But I do not love Arby. Arby is the human embodiment of Garbage Island, the island that is floating in the Pacific Ocean, collecting all of our plastic bottles and general other garbage and polluting our waters. Honestly to call Arby garbage isn’t ruthless enough. It doesn’t get the point across. Even calling him Arby, a restaurant that probably doesn’t deserve such a harsh association, feels cruel.
Arby is rubbish.
I mean, I know a lot of things about myself, but:
And Arby is the Standard of Trash To Which I Now Hold All Men. I will be ranking the men this season on the Rubbish Arby Scale.
Note: I am not even a full minute into the episodea, and I have a lot of feelings.
We have to relive the torturous final moments of Becca and Rubbish Arby’s relationship again, because ABC is basically going to milk this moment for everything it’s worth. We see Becca walking through some snow, searching for her future or whatever metaphor the powers that be are going after this season. She thought she had found her future, but nope! That future is off getting married to the human embodiment of an unflavored Fage Yogurt3. Becca is ready to find love because her parents were in love until her dad’s untimely death and guess what? It’s her turn now.
My favorite part of every season is the girls who are like, “I can’t believe I’m The Bachelorette? All I had to do was unleash a ton of my personal trauma on national television and ABC will pay me to wear sequin dresses and shank dudes’ hearts now!” I do love that Arby is actually banned from Minnesota, though. I mean, I don’t think he’s running to go to Minnesota any time soon, but the fewer options Arby has to spread his rubbish sludge, the better. We see Becca go through her Bachelorette Photoshoot4 and show how she’s a Strong Woman in both demeanor and physical strength at a acrobatic silks class.
I’m tentative.
Becca arrives at The Bachelor Mansion, where our three past Bachelorettes, all engaged but none married, are waiting for her with mimosas. Honestly, I would like to hang out with these three girls. Rachel and I could just... you know, be black together and I would ask Joelle about home design and Kaitlyn and I could dance. Tag me in, Becca. TAG ME IN. Rachel tells Arby to go fuck himself and basically is a queen the entire time. They all rave about the experience and how great it was for all of them - take away the fantasy and really consider real life. Rachel and Joelle talk about the fact that the women have a better track record on The Bachelorette (true) because they approach the situation with more nuance than the men do. And that’s true. To me, the men of The Bachelor are looking for someone to project their dreams onto, and the women are approaching it with a real sense of opportunity.
Rachel proceeds to sage the entire mansion, Becca’s ring finger, her vagina, and they’re never going to get rid of the stench of toxic masculinity, Axe body spray, and desperation. That’ll be there forever. That's in the fibers of the couches.
Okay, let’s talk about Becca’s first night dress. I know people are divided on it, but I think it’s a banger, okay? I mean, I wish it wasn’t ivory, but the all overbeadwork and the art-deco style is gorgeous. I also love the neckline, because Becca has great shoulders. The pairing of that with those dramatic teardrop earrings was stunning. It sparkles in the light, it’s a dress meant to be on television, not caught in a still shot.
LET’S MEET THE MEAT, SHALL WE?
First up is Clay, who is 30, and is a pro football player. Great, because now I have to worry about you getting CTE and argue with you about standing for the national anthem? Oh, Clay played for Detroit, though. I can’t be mad at him. Also, CLAY IS A DREAMBOAT. We see him at dinner with his family and his cute grandma. Clay is there For Becca, for sure.
We met Garrett, who starts with a Chris Farley impression. In 2018. A Chris. Farley. Impression. Chris Farley’s corpse is turning over and over and over in his grave. Oh my god, of course Garrett is from Reno. Reno gives me such Second City vibes. Not like the improv group, but like, the city you go to when you don’t have anywhere else to go, like Cincinnati or Tallahassee. Garrett is active because of course, but he wants a companion to do outsidey things with.
Oh god, we meet Jordan, who is 26, and a professional model. I already am going to safely call him this season’s Robb(ie). Jordan is the kind of guy who’s hot in certain lights but then other times you’re like “man, give some chin to other people!” He has a lot of chin, and his meticuliously carved “scruff” isn’t helping matters much. Oh god. Jordan starts out talking about his Brand, a phrase I only say ironically. I am literally shaking with rage. Jordan’s an unironic Derek Zoolander. He considers having to be tan and using salt spray to be “taxing”. He’s excited for once to finally be focusing on someone else for a change, and all he wants to do is sit on a couch with a box of chocolates with Becca in sweatpants and watch a chick flick. Jordan claims a lot of models don’t do that.
Someone want to notify Jordan that a good number of male models are gay men who would definitely do that? Anyone?
Next up is Lincoln, who we’ve already met on After The Final Rose. Lincoln is from Nigeria and he’s #blessed to be in the United States. He’s ready to get married and ready to settle down. That’s all. Boring. Joe From Chicago owns a grocery store, and as soon as this comes out of his mouth I’m in love with him. My full on Type is Man from Chicago Who Owns A Grocery Store. Joe’s ready to settle down and knows when he finds the right one, he’ll know.
Jean-Blanc comes on screen and I can hear my mom yelling “THIS IS YOUR HUSBAND AMANDA” from the six-hundred-something miles away that she is. Jean-Blanc collects “accoutrements”, and oh my god, my mom might be right. Jean-Blanc likes stuff. Watches, ties, cologne, all the extra shit no one really needs but it’s nice to have. I mean, I hate wearing perfume, but if a man can find a blend that works for him and isn’t overpowering? Great. Dope. Totally down. We see him opening Viktor & Rolf’s Spice Bomb, a Curve cologne??? And others from the Checkout Aisle From Marshalls and TJMaxx Collection. He’s going to “blow her nose away”, a phrase I’m shocked Jordan didn’t use because you knnnnnnoooow Jordan loves a little nose candy. Sorry, it’s true.
Colton is another football player so this season is full of men with experience getting concussions. Also, can we stop making men named Colton football players? Colton got injured in his last season, so he decided to give up football forever and now runs a charity to change the lives of cystic fibrosis sufferers. Okay, I can’t even talk shit. Damn charity.
Becca heads in the limo to meet Chris Harrison and the 29 other garbage men that will create the Advent Calendar of Regret that is The Bachelorette. Chris Harrison is on screen for the perfect amunt of time - like, thirty seconds, before our first limo full of mediocrity arrives. First out? Charitable Colton, who is firmly placed in the top two, officially. He wants to celebrate Becca being bachelorette and brought confetti poppers, which is actually not the worst initial interaction for these two people to have. It’s actually... cute?
God, help me.
We meet Grant, who both tells Becca he respects her for what she’s gone through but also wants her to forget all of it - way to help with THAT, Grrrrrant. Clay comes out and talks about football and makes a football pun and is cute and everything. Jean Blanc has a French name and teaches Becca some French, which is a mess. Of course, he has her translate “Let’s do the damn thing”, and god I hope it’s the last time we hear that this season, but that’s not true. Connor is a fitness coach and gets down on one knee in front of Becca. Don’t retrigger the girl.
Oh god, not even two mintes after I said I never wanted to hear “let’s do the damn thing”, here comes Connor with it all over again. God damn this show.
Another limo arrives and out comes Joe From Chicago Who Owns A Grocery. He immediately forgets what he has to say as soon as he sees Becca and JOE I WILL TAKE YOU. John walks the wrong way into the house, and Leo arrives looking like he was trying to do a Miss Geist from Clueless costume and forgot to do his hair before leaving the house. It is not a good look, I literally slid to the ground and cackled when he came out5. He proceeds to take his hair down and swish it around like he’s fucking Fabio.
Jordan comes out of the limo and Becca says hi, and he doesn’t respond. Because that is the kind of person Jordan is. He’s the kind of man who wants to say hello first. Jordan wasn’t expecting Becca to be wearing ivory, which is just a weird thing to say. His shoes are loud as fuck, too. Jordan spent six hours on his outfit and is like, “I’m wearing a grey suit, it’s daring.”
No, Obama wearing a khaki suit is daring. Klein Epstein and & Parker Suits are daring. A heather grey suit with a blue tie is like putting a jalapeno in your guacamole. You’re not exactly living on the edge.
Nick arrives dressed like a racecar driver because only assholes wear outfits like that. Nick is... god, I can’t figure out if Nick is hot or not. I do appreciate Leo being ike, “yeah, reminding this girl of her ex? NOT A GOOD LOOK.”
So of course Mike, the other long-haired dude with a fucking man bun in god damn 2018, comes in with a cardboard cut-out of Becca’s ex. STOP TRIGGERING THIS WOMAN. That isn’t charming, that’s weird. I didn’t look up my ex-boyfriend’s ex-girlfriends until like, a solid year into our relationship. I mean, it wasn’t the same way on his end6 but I think if I were to lead this show I’d specifically ask them NOT to mention my ex, if possible. Like, at all.
Garrett arrives in a minivan, and it’s full of soccer balls and a baby bag and he’s just trying to set the correct tone. I literally sat grimacing the entire time he was on screen. I hate Garrett already.
My second favorite part of the season premiere is the men being like “wow, there’s a lot of dudes here”. What did y’all expect?
Blake arrives on an... ox? After already meeting Becca with a horse at After The Final Rose? Becca’s right in wondering where he’s getting all of these animals from. I feel bad for the poor intern that needs to take care of Blake’s animals. Lincoln, the other guy who met Becca at After the Final Rose, and he brought Becca cake. Lincoln and Blake are both feeling confident because they’ve already met her before. We see a bunch of other dudes we’ve met before - Darius, Chase, Banjoist Ryan. The 24 other guys are intimidated because clearly they have some sort of leg up in the competition because they’ve been with her for ten seconds four months ago. I’m sure Darva Conger would agree with them that this is a solid grounding to form bonds over. It ended so well for her.
They basically show all the black guys back to back and a bunch of other nonfactors meeting Becca.
And then there’s Kamil, who is wearing sneakers with his suit and his job is “social media participant” which is effectively like putting “Air Breather” as your job in 2018. He only walks halfway to Becca and makes her come the other half to meet him, and then moves back further and is like “yeah, what about 60/40?” And honestly, this is the best depiction of heterosexual dating in 2018 I’ve ever seen and Kamil is literally telling Becca Who He Is in their initial interaction. 60/40, my ass. Becca is unamused by this and tries to turn it around on him, and he won’t engage.
Ya donzo, Social Media Participant.
Jake shows up, and Becca knows who he is. He’s an acquaintance and she’s confused because... Oh, okay? That’s super weird. I totally get why that’s weird. Production comes in with morbid music as a hearse drives up. Trent pops out and says he literally died when he found out Becca was Bachelorette, and I cackled. I can’t help it. It’s one of the worst things I’ve ever witnessed.
Jordan is here to show off his sartorial choices and doesn’t understand the other shlubs who showed up. I hate that I kind of agree with him? But then again, I intend my wedding attire to be Elevated Black Tie. I want the men to show up in basically butler’s uniforms and the women to look like Lady Gaga. Just put a little more effort in - Becca’s standing there in a backless beaded gown, the least you can do is put on a god damn tie.
Oh, of course someone comes in in a chicken suit. David is both a chicken and a venture capitalist, which is my least favorite thing. He has to wear that suit all night long. Jordan is #unamused, which is hilarious. I do appreciate the “bekaw/Becca” wordplay. Chris arrives with a fucking choir who sings about getting a rose, and I’m just... Okay. This would be teeeeewwwww much for me.
Okay, we’ve got twenty-eight men. And none of them are winners. Good LUCK, Becca. Becca makes her first toast, and immediately Connor is the first one to whisk her away. The guys are genuinely shocked but y’all, that’s how the game is PLAYED. He opens a bottle of champagne with a kitchen knife, and it’s impressive, but not a saber like is to be expected or standard. Color me unimpressed, Connor.7 Clay and Becca play with Clay, and I love that. I mean, who doesn’t love adults playing with play-doh? Clay is from a small town and talks about his values and how they grew from growing up where he did. He talks about how excited he was to meet her, and I smile. Clay is too good for this show.
ONE OF THE DUDES MADE THE APP FOR VENMO AND WHAT IS HE DOING HERE? DAMN, ABC.
Chris uses the fact that his grandparents got married after two months and have been together almost 60 years to get Becca to believe that Chris is all about this. Chris looks far too much like Perez Hilton for my liking and just for that, I hate him with a firey passion.8 Christon is a former Harlem Globetrotter and so he’s gonna show her how he can dunk a ball from her own hands. He DUNKED Becca, jumping OVER her head, and it...
It’s actually marvelous. Like, damn. I mean, he’s a Harlem Globetrotter. He better be able to dunk on command.
Blake and Becca are on the same page, which is shocking because Blake is basically dressed like Hugh Hefner. Chris Harrison comes in, drops off the First Impression Rose, and walks out to go put his pajamas back on. All the guys are immediately shooketh by it.
Lincoln brought Becca a bracelet from Nigeria, and we get a montage of the stunts these guys are pulling to impress Becca. David the Chicken Venture Capitalist leads Becca in the chicken dance and we’re supposed to be impressed by him becuase he’s literally in a chicken suit but he has a Serious Career.
We get to watch the Anxiety Set In for the men who haven’t had a chance to talk to Becca yet, especially Jordan. He pretends like it doesn’t bother him, he’s just playing it cool, but come on. Garrett shows Becca how to fish, and if a dude did this to me, I’d yawn. Garrett reminds Becca of home, of her dad, and she thinks he’d totally fit in with her family. Oh no.
Chris / Perez Hilton / Ben Stiller in Dodgeball has realized someone is There For the Wrong Reasons. Chase, who met Becca on After the Final Rose, is suspected by Chris. I’m suspicious of both of them simply because they’re both from Orlando, Florida unapologetically. Chris knows Chase’s ex-girlfriend and apparently she told Chris that he’s just there for publicity. They all think Chris needs to confront Chase. I can’t tell you who told him this because we’re still at the point of the season where all the men kind of look the same. I think it’s Christon and Blake, but I’m not sure.
The drama has already begun. I'm sad it's not someone getting black out drunk like it usually is.
Chris takes Chase aside to tell him what the deal is, and Chase of course denies all of this. I mean, what’s he going to do, stand there and admit do it? He confirms he’s there for the Right Reasons, and he’s there for Becca. My favorite is that he admits to have been watching this show for years with his mom, so of COURSE he’s NOT THERE FOR FAME. I don’t understand this thought process as a defense.
Chase immediately runs to Becca to tattle on Chris for being skeptical. Chase, who looks perpetually constipated, never found out what this girl told Chris, but he’s vehemently denying whatever it is and isn’t That Guy, whatever guy his ex he only dated for a month told Chris he was. Like damn, Chase. You musta done something. Becca doesn’t really know what to do with any of that information because Chase is leaving out the part where he’s the asshole.
Chase goes and grabs Chris (????) because they’re settling the drama right then and there. Chase denies ever dating this girl with any kind of seriousness and they’re both... gross. Becca clearly doesn’t know what to do because the story doesn’t add up. If it was two years ago and someone he only a dated a month, what’s the issue at hand? It’s so weird. Becca is as turned off as I am, and this mostly reminds her of someone she met earlier that she was turned off by initially.
She comes to get Jake, because his intentions are watery at best. They have the same group of friends back in Minnesota but have never interacted, and so it’s super weird that he showed up here trying to date her. Like, dude, you actually had a chance before to at least try to. Becca doesn’t think he showed her any interest in the previous times they’ve met, and Jake doesn’t remember meeting her more than one time. He remembers one time they met, but not... multiple times.
I scoffed so hard a little bit of phlegm came out. TMI, I know. But still.
Jake is excited to be there and get to know her, but Becca isn’t on board, and rightfully so. I’ve had people meet me multiple times and have zero recollection and I’m offended. Here comes Jake, having met Becca multiple times and admittingly having no recollection of doing so, coming onto this show to try to date her? Really? When in real life he never tried to in the first place? Most people aren’t as transparent as Jake is with their intentions, but it’s so clear that Jake thought he’d be able to parlay the fact that they knew each other before into a relationship.
But if we’ve met before and you didn’t show any interest then, how am I expected to take you seriously now that we’re on TV? Becca all but says as much but tells him she knows what it feels like to have someone question her relationship with them and she’s not going to do that again. Jake tries to be like “but what about meEEEEEEE and MY FEELINGS” and Becca shuts that shit right down because she is not here for his whataboutism. Neither of them did anything when they met before, and it’s not about who did what in this scenario. She’s holding the god damn key and him coming on this show in the first place was fucked up. She doesn’t want to waste his time and knows she doesn’t see a future with him. She’s sending him home ASAP.
He tells her that he’s not the same person she met at some mysterious Christmas Party and has had a “transformative year” - uh you’re telling this to the woman who got dumped on national television, your transformation is nothing compared to hers - and he’s a different person. He thinks if they met again, it would have a different result. I’m sure it would, Jake, but you lost your chance. Sorry. He says he respects how she feels and he’s going home.
Jake was one of the most attractive men there, but man, this was G R O S S.
Becca announces to the men that Jake is going home first, and they’re all terrified.
There is a grown ass man with an “expecto patronus” Harry Potter tattoo, and yeah, he’s got some nonsense “it’s different in Latin” translation, but I’m just happy the black guy doesn’t have a Death Eater tattoo8. Colton talks about his charity, and the First Impression Rose is still there.
But not for long, because here comes Becca to grab it and offer it to...
Garrett.
All the guys are visibly gutted. I don’t know why, the best thing about Garrett is his tie. I love a pink and blue tie. He gets the first kiss of the season, too. Garrett’s thrilled.
Back inside, Chris Harrison has changed back into his suit for about ten minutes to gather Becca before the first Rose Ceremony. At this point, I also see a guy who I haven’t seen thus far, and went “PHOARRRRRRRR” because he was so hot. WHO ARE YOU, ANONYMOUS HOTTIE? I love that Jordan’s like, “It wouldn’t be fair to Becca if I didn’t get a rose tonight.” I’m on my third season of saying this, but I love when the contestants think their feelings matter at all in this scenario.
The Rose Ceremony begins.
Lincoln, Blake, Rickey, Jean-Blanc, Christon, Clay, Wills, Connor, Jason, John, Ryan9, Alex, Nick, Trent, Colton, David The Chicken Venture Capitalist, Jordan, Leo, Mike, and Chris all accept roses.
That means Chris’s plan to get rid of Chase worked. Which it never does. On The Bachelorette, The Messenger usually gets shot.
Bye to Chase, Christian, Darius, Grant, Joe, and Kamil, all to face the cold light of day. Y’all stayed up all night for this.
BUT NOOOOOOOO, NOT GROCERY STORE JOE, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I’ll keep you warm in those Chicago winters, Joe. Now that My (ex)-boyfriend Wells is dating someone far more famous than I am, I’m in the market. Call me.
This Season, on The Bachelorette: This season isn’t the most dramatic ever, according to Chris Harrison. This time, it’s an adventure. Lots of beach kissing! All the guys are like “Arby’s dumb for losing this girl.” Colton, Jean Blanc, and Nick all tell Becca they’re in love with her. And then - TEARS. LOTS OF THEM. Someone did to Becca what Arby did, and whoever it is, I AM COMING FOR YOUR EDGES. Lincoln is a liar and a manipulator? Jordan, who is clearly there to boost his modeling career, takes it very personally for people to attack his character on television. That… doesn’t help with people thinking you’re just there to boost your modeling career, Jordan. Colton, of course, is a virgin, and apparently this may or may not be a lie? Who lies about something like that? Becca’s pissed. She just wants honesty from these fuckboys, and girl, you better have stocked up in fuckboy repellent. All she wants is their honesty from here on out. And then someone’s getting taken off in an ambulance. But it’s all going to end in an engagement that has allegedly already been spoiled by TMZ/the Powers that Be at ABC trying to scoop Reality Steve, so that’s what we have to look forward to.
See you next week! It’s great to be back.
Random Assessments from the Desk of Amanda:
Becca is only a year older than I am, and this is really sending me spiraling. I know we’ve had girls younger than I am on this show, but I never really contextualized that until I saw 1990 next to Becca’s name. I am so OLD.
This season’s batch of men makes me never want to be The Second Black Bachelorette™. If these are the best options, I’ll barf.
I know she’ll be on Paradise because come on no brainer, but man - I am so happy The Bachelorette is not Tia. Oh man, am I happy it’s not Tia.
I know everyone talks about how amazing Joelle’s hair is, but Becca. Gorgeous hair.
How tall is Becca? She looks like she’s my height.
Jordan is going to be this season’s Chad. At least we’re going back to the Douchebag Villain and not the Racist Villain again.
I really loved that all the guys were like “if the guy in a chicken suit gets a rose over me, life means nothing.” Oh, to have never struggled a day in your life.
Jordan, are you really a fashion model if you’re from Crystal Ocean Spray, Florida?
All of these men look like 90s Teen Film Villains. Like, this is a cast of Andrew Keegans and Paul Walkers.
Elizabeth who? ↩︎
I mean, kind of? No, I don’t. I really don’t. Can someone explain this to me? I feel like that’s resigning yourself to a lifetime of mediocre sex because you haven’t experienced anything else. ↩︎
I went with Fage because Bobby Flay, the whitest man I can think of, was their brand representative for a moment. Why is Bobby Flay the whitest man I can think of? He has a show where he literally competes with people to prove he’s good. I don’t need that, I literally have MY LIFE. ↩︎
Things that are interesting to only me: after two years of having the lead on a white background in a red dress (Joelle and Rachel), they’re back to the metallic-colored sequin dress (Kaitlyn and Andi), but Becca’s on a grey background. Both Emily and Desiree had what honestly looks like satin prom dresses from JCPenney. This matters to literally no one else. ↩︎
The least surprising thing about Leo is that he’s a stuntman. Of course he is. Stuntmen either look like him or look like... well, what I imagine Joe From Chicago Who Owns A Grocery Store’s uncles probably look like. ↩︎
boundaries.
↩︎
Some other guy who is a real estate agent is like, “you never buy the first house,” which reminds us this show is doing really good things for gender progress in America. (/s) ↩︎
Seriously, has anyone with a Death Eater tattoo realized they’re just telling the entire world they’d be a proud racist wizard? ↩︎ ↩︎
RYAN IS MY SECRET MYSTERY HOTTIE, OMG. I forgive his banjo playing, it’s not like he’s in Mumford & Sons. ↩︎

NHL officiating in the playoffs has been nothing short of haphazard

NHL officiating in the playoffs has been nothing short of haphazard
You may be thinking of several more incidents left unmentioned. Maybe something from the Bruins’ playoff run?
Rage against the referees has been a part of hockey since the puck was a chunk of wood and the sticks were fashioned from saplings. There used to be a few cameras in the building, and now there’s a few hundred, and we can clearly see what the officials a few feet away miss, as the players skate by in a blur. Maybe we should accept that they’re going to miss some bad ones.
Judging by the numbers, nothing should change. On average, officials call more penalties in the playoffs than in the regular season. According to the NHL, playoff games in the last two seasons have averaged 8.33 penalty calls, compared with 7.05 during the regular season.
But that doesn’t sound right, does it? When the prize is greater, players battle harder, empty their tanks completely, finish checks more violently. Why aren’t there more penalties called?
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, through a league spokesperson, told the Globe that players, not officials, determine the calls.
“Officials are directed and encouraged to call the same standard as in the regular season,” Daly said. “That’s always been the case, but it’s been an even greater point of emphasis in recent years. What changes in the playoffs is the way the game is played on the ice, and that changes how officiating is perceived.”
Not everyone buys that.
“It’s different from regular season to playoffs. The refs are letting a little bit more stuff go,” Vegas winger Jonathan Marchessault said, calling it “adversity that teams need to face in the playoffs. Good teams will find a way to go through it. Just have to battle through it. Find a way.”
More bluntly, NBC analyst Brian Boucher tweeted he was “tired of people crying about officiating. Deal with it!”
Sure … but … why? Do we want what amounts to a different rulebook for the postseason?
Does it make sense that Connor McDavid can go eight games over the last two playoffs without drawing a penalty, despite numerous clear-cut infractions against him? Analyst Rachel Doerrie said she watched every McDavid shift from the Oilers-Jets series and counted 30 non-calls. McDavid, as you’d expect from the league’s premier talent, had the most offensive-zone puck possession time of any player during the regular season, according to Sportlogiq. He earned 53 penalty calls in 120 games, ranking sixth in the NHL. Not one penalty call in the postseason?
Longtime NHL official Kerry Fraser, who retired in 2010, said the missed calls this year have been “troublesome,” pointing to a “regression” in the performance of veterans in stripes.
“This is painful to say, and to watch, because I know all these guys, and worked with some of them,” Fraser said on TSN 1050 in Toronto. “They’re good people. They don’t deserve the kind of work that they’re putting forth.
“That’s not fair. That’s not right. As a player, you would look at yourself first. But you would also look at the kind of direction you’re getting … you’ve got to look at the game plan.”
Paul Stewart, the longtime former NHL ref from Dorchester, noted in a phone conversation that officials don’t have regular pregame meetings during the season, but they do in the playoffs. That’s where all kinds of bugs can be put in their ears — like “No. 11 is cheating on faceoffs,” he said, conjuring an example that would perk the ears of Bruce Cassidy.
Though the league has denied it, “letting the players play” is a long-accepted practice. A few seasons ago (2017), the NHL told its men in stripes to focus on slashes to the hands. That’s how we get what happened in Game 4 of Vegas-Montreal: Joel Edmundson retaliated by cross-checking William Carrier into the boards (no call), Suzuki hooked Alec Martinez on the hands (penalty).
“This is an annual event,” Fraser said. “We have one set of rules in the regular season, and then a whole different standard in the playoffs.
“Yes, we like to let them play, but when you let the players decide the outcome of a game, which I never subscribed to, then you’re actually as a referee letting things go that could affect the outcome of the game.
“Draw the line. Players will play within it. They’re smart. But if you let the inmates run the prison, the warden might as well take his skates off and watch it on TV.”
Canada’s best
Canadiens an unlikely finalist, or are they?
Few expected to see the Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Final, but the Habs are four wins away from lifting their first Cup since 1993.Vaughn Ridley/Getty
This is as deep as the Canadiens have been in a generation. They have not been to the Stanley Cup Final since 1993, when they won the most recent Cup in their (and Canada’s) history.
And they got there on an overtime goal. The last time they went to the Final on an OT winner was … for the sake of anyone who remembers 1979, let’s not go there. Already too much discussion of penalties here.
But give the Habs their props. They took it to a Vegas team that rolled over the West Division, and now we have to question whether the West, not the North, was the weakest division in hockey. The Knights went a combined 33-6-1 against the Ducks, Coyotes, Kings, Sharks and Blues, two of which (Arizona and St. Louis) made the playoffs last year. They split with Colorado (4-4-0) and went 3-4-1 against surprising Minnesota.
Entering the postseason, the commonly held belief was that Colorado, Vegas and Tampa were the three best teams, and that an eventual Avalanche-Knights series would be a de-facto Cup Final. But the Avs flunked out, and the Habs shut down that raucous party in the scorching desert summer.
This, from a team that fired Claude Julien and finished 18th in the regular-season standings. Montreal was supposed to be blown out by Toronto in the first round. But after offing the Maple Leafs in seven (coming back from a 3-1 deficit) and sweeping the Jets, here they are.
Not enough offense? Young talent too unreliable? Carey Price is washed up? Oublie ça. Forget it.
A major key, to this eye: after Julien was fired in February, interim coach Dominique Ducharme — who last week gave way to assistant Luke Richardson because of a positive COVID-19 test — asked his team to play more passively in the neutral zone. Similar to the Islanders, the Canadiens play patient and reliable defense, work as a unit, and strike off turnovers. They don’t dominate the puck or own the offensive zone. It doesn’t matter. They had 14 different goal scorers, a dozen among the forwards.
Nick Suzuki is making plays all over the ice, showing why Julien liked to compare him with a Patrice Bergeron-in-training. Shutdown center Phillip Danault neutralized Mark Stone (0-0—0, seven shots) to a degree rarely seen, after having a similar effect on the Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews. Brendan Gallagher, after missing the last six weeks of the regular season with a broken thumb, is back in his heart-and-soul role, irritating Vegas stalwart Alex Pietrangelo enough to draw consistent attention away from the play. Corey Perry is still an on-ice jerk, albeit one with some gas left in his tank.
Montreal leans heavily on four big defenders (Ben Chiarot, Shea Weber, Jeff Petry and Joel Edmundson), all of whom play 23-25 minutes a night. Jon Merrill (13) and Erik Gustafsson (sub-10) don’t see much action, the latter used mostly for power plays. Montreal is 11-0 this postseason when scoring twice. While Price has been stellar, he isn’t making a slew of spectacular stops. He’s seeing pucks.
It’s a team that blends age (Perry and Eric Staal, both 36; Weber, 35; Price, 33) with youth (Suzuki, 21; Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Cole Caufield, 20) and had enough grit to withstand whatever Vegas threw its way.
Caufield, the Habs’ version of Alex DeBrincat, scored four times in the series, including a Game 6 goal that showed his touch, acceleration, shot and verve. After Vegas netminder Robin Lehner shut him down on a Game 4 breakaway and cracked how five-hole or high glove were Caufield’s two moves, the rookie roasted him upstairs.
After sitting Caufield for the first two games against the Leafs (and Kotkaniemi for Game 1), Ducharme found one of the breakout stars of the playoffs. Game 6 was the ex-Wisconsinite’s 24th career game, his 14th in the playoffs. Caufield won the Hobey Baker some 10 weeks ago. He can still win the Calder Trophy next year.
If Tampa is next, Montreal won’t shrink. They enter the final having killed 30 consecutive power plays — a league-record 13 straight games without a PPG allowed — so why would the Lightning’s man-advantage scare them?
Abuse allegations
Ex-Blackhawks video coach accused of sexual assault
Think of the Chicago Blackhawks of the 2010s and what comes to mind? Probably the names of star players — Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith — and the three Cups they won.
The legacy of that team might be shifting.
TSN recently uncovered stunning claims of sexual assault on the watch of the Blackhawks’ management. The Canadian outlet reported that two former Blackhawks reported to then-skills coach Paul Vincent in May 2010 that they had been abused by video coach Brad Aldrich, who went on to abuse others at subsequent career stops.
Vincent, of Beverly, told TSN recently his plea to Hawks management to take the allegations to Chicago police was rejected. He says he is willing to testify on behalf of the plaintiffs in court.
In May, two unnamed players filed lawsuits against the franchise, alleging the team covered up alleged abuses by Aldrich.
According to multiple reports, Aldrich was convicted of abusing a 17-year-old player in Houghton, Mich., in 2013. He resigned from his position as Miami University hockey operations months before, under suspicion of “unwanted touching of a male adult,” according to police records obtained by TSN.
A former Blackhawks marketing official told TSN that Alrdich would “routinely befriend young interns” and invite them to hang out at his Chicago apartment. The official said he was told to “steer clear” of Aldrich because he had “tried something” with a few players, and that “the entire training staff, a lot of people knew” about Aldrich’s behavior — it was “open secret,” the official said.
It is a situation the Blackhawks and the NHL must address. Neither entity has commented.
Raising awareness
Ex-Stars defenseman roller-blading for mental health
Former Stars defenseman Stephen Johns is roller-blading and road-tripping across the US to raise awareness for mental health.Ron Jenkins/Associated Press
Got big summer plans? Stephen Johns didn’t, until a couple weeks ago.
The former Dallas defenseman, who did not play last season because of post-concussion syndrome, retired June 13 and announced a new adventure: he’s roller-blading and road-tripping across the US to raise awareness for mental health.
Johns, from Wampum, Pa., reports he traveled from Pittsburgh to Wisconsin in his first week, logging roughly 40 miles a day. He’s on three wheels, with a helmet, elbow pads and wrist guards, and has a friend, Jeff Toates, driving alongside him, documenting the trip and carrying necessities. There has been lace bite and leg burn. In Chicago, the former Notre Dame standout skated to Lake Michigan and did a front flip into the water.
The genesis of the trip was Johns’s battle with depression, which sank him during a 2018-19 season in which he suffered a head injury during training camp in Boise, Idaho. He did not play the entire season. After 22 months away from the game, he returned to play 17 games in 2020, earning a finalist nod for the Masterton Trophy.
Johns recently wrote on Instagram that he was “tired of letting depression destroy my life,” and wanted to provide the same kind of inspiration to those facing their own battles.
“What I miss most about the game of hockey is providing inspiration,” he wrote. “If I can inspire one person to climb out of their hole, then that’s a successful trip.”
Loose pucks
Former Flyers coach Dave Hakstol is taking over the expansion Seattle Kraken ahead of their first season.Ken Lambert/Associated Press
Swerve in Seattle: Dave Hakstol, who coached the Flyers (and made a pair of first-round exits) from 2015-19 and was a Maple Leafs assistant the last two years, is the expansion Kraken’s first head coach. Hakstol did good work with Toronto’s defense (in two years, 26th to seventh in goals against). Bruce Cassidy and Mike Sullivan, among many others, would tell you that all you need is a second chance … Gerard Gallant, the Rangers’ replacement for David Quinn, wants to coach the “hardest-working team in the league,” which is a thing often said during introductory press conferences. Will GM Chris Drury add a few gritty types to fill out the roster? Are the Rangers a playoff team next season? We say yes, and no … Expecting some team to overpay for Vegas’ Alec Martinez, the defense-first, top-four defender with two Stanley Cup rings from Los Angeles. Same feeling about Tampa’s David Savard and Blake Coleman, and whichever UFAs the Islanders don’t re-sign on their fourth line … The Sedin twins are back in Vancouver, Canucks GM Jim Benning hiring them as special advisers to learn the management side. “We care about this team,” Henrik said, noting that he and brother Daniel have a lot to learn. Any fresh ideas on how to sign RFAs Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes, with $15 million in cap space and a roster that currently includes 15 skaters? … The NWHL’s Toronto Six made a splashy move, hiring Hockey Hall of Famer Angela James as an assistant coach … Who’s going to be a more interesting TV analyst: Wayne Gretzky on Turner or Mark Messier on ESPN? Not expecting spicy takes from either … RIP to René Robert, a member of the Sabres’ famed French Connection line, who died at 72. Robert gave Buffalo its first win in a Stanley Cup Final game by finishing Game 3 against the Flyers in 1975 with an OT strike in a foggy Buffalo Auditorium … Podcast recommendation: Bernie Corbett’s “Games People Play,” featuring lengthy interviews with a range of sports figures (including the Globe’s Bob Ryan and John Powers). Hockey subjects include Keith Tkachuk, Theo Fleury, Bryan Trottier and Eddie Johnston … Draft trivia: forward Cole Sillinger, a first-round prospect, is the son of well-traveled Mike Sillinger, who made an NHL-record 12 stops during his 18-year career. Cole was born during his father’s two-year stay in Columbus … The aluminum bottles and cans were likely empty — why would anyone waste a drop? — when Islanders fans celebrated a Game 6 win by giving the Nassau Coliseum sheet a silver shower. Throwing objects is normally a protest, not a celebration, but that’s life at the old barn in Uniondale. “That building coming into overtime was smelling like cigarettes,” mused winning goal-scorer Anthony Beauvillier. “Now it smells like beers.”

Implementation of dark mode in reaction devices
One of the apps features most requested is the dark mode (or night mode, as others call it). In the apps which we use every day, we see dark mode. From smartphones to web applications, the dark mode has become important to businesses wishing to look after their users' eyes.The dark mode is an add-on feature that often shows dark surfaces in the UI. Most big corporations (such as YouTube, Twitter, and Netflix) have brought their smartphone and web applications into dark mode.Although we are not going to go into React and styled-components in detail, a simple knowledge of React, CSS, and styled-components would be useful.
A few days before this article was written, StackOverflow announced its release of dark mode, offering users the opportunity to switch between the two modes.Dark mode eliminates eye pressure and aids when operating on a device or cell phone for a long period of time. What Is Dark Mode?The dark mode is the color scheme of any device showing light text and device elements on a dark backdrop, making it a little easier for the user to view cell phones, tablets, and computers. Dark mode decreases the light produced by the screen while preserving the minimum color-contrast ratios that are appropriate for reading. Why Should You Care About Dark Mode?Dark mode improves visual ergonomics by reducing eye strain, adapting the screen to current light conditions, and ensuring ease of use in dark environments or at night.Let's look at its benefits before we introduce dark mode in our app.
BATTERY SAVINGDark mode in Web and mobile apps will extend a device's battery life. Google stated that dark mode on OLED screens has been a tremendous help to battery life.For example, the dark mode in the YouTube app saves about 15 percent more screen energy than a flat white background at 50 percent brightness. The dark GUI saves a whopping 60 percent of screen energy at 100 percent screen brightness. DARK MODE IS BEAUTIFULThe dark mode is stunning, and can greatly enhance the screen's appeal.Although most products go for the same bland white look, the dark mode offers something else that looks both mysterious and fresh.It also offers great opportunities for a fresh presentation of graphic material, such as dashboards, videos, and images.
Now that you know why you should implement dark mode in your next web app, let's dive deep into style-components, which in this tutorial's defining resources.The dark mode is the color scheme of any interface that displays light text and interface elements on a dark background, making viewing on mobile phones, tablets, and computers a little easier.
What Are Styled-Components?We will be using the styled-components library very much in this post. There have always been a lot of ways to design a modern web application. A document-level there is the conventional styling approach which involves creating an index.css file and linking it to the HTML or styling within the HTML file.A lot has changed in the way web apps are recently designed after CSS-in-JS was introduced.CSS-in-JS refers to a pattern where JavaScript is used to compose the Html. To style components in a JavaScript file, it uses tagged template literals. The styled component is a CSS-in-JS library that allows you to use all the
CSS
features you need, including media queries, pseudo-selectors, and nesting.
Why Styled-Components?For the following reasons styled-components were created:
No hell class name Instead of scratching your head to find an item class name, styled-components can create unique class names for your types. You will never have to think about misrepresentations, or using class names that have no meaning.
The use of designed component props allows one to expand the styling properties using the props parameter widely used in React — thereby dynamically influencing the component's feeling through the state of the application. Supports Sass syntax
Writing Sass syntax out of the box without having to set up any preprocessors or extra build tools is possible with styled-components. In your style definitions, you can use the & character to target the current component, use pseudo-selectors, and experiment with nesting.
• Theming modeled components have full thematic support through the export of a ThemeProvider wrapper. This framework provides a theme for all components of React within itself via the Context API. All styled-components will have access to the given theme in the rendering tree, even though they are deeply multi-level. As we continue this tutorial, we will investigate the thematic features of modeled components more deeply SETTING UP
1. CREATE THE FILE STRUCTURECreating a folder and inserting within it three empty text files: one with.html, one with.css, and one with.js. Also, create a folder of images for the photos you wish to view on the website.JQuery also makes use of our "dark mode in CSS" demo. In the example, we are going to add the script right from the Cloudflare CDN to the HTML file so that it is always up to date. If you like, however, you can download and add the jQuery library as a local.js file as well.Here's how the file structure will look before coding begins:
- dark-mode-css/ - images/ - cake.jpg - index.html - script.js - style.css
2. MARK UP THE HTMLAdd the dark-mode switch to the top of the page in the HTML. Then create a < h1 > title tag, and a semantic < article > tag for the page's content. Finally, just before the < /body > tag closes add the two < script > tags.Please note that before the custom script you are adding the jQuery library so it can use its functionalities. The style.css file will go into the page's < head > section.
<!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="UTF-8"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="ie=edge"> <title>Demo | Dark Mode in CSS</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css"> </head> <body> <div class="switch">Dark mode: <span class="inner-switch">OFF</span> </div> <h1 class="title">The Best Recipes of All Time</h1> <article> <h1>Raspberry Cake</h1> <p><small>Created with Cupcake Ipsum</small></p> <p>...</p> <img src="images/cake.jpg"> <p>...</p> </article> <script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.4.0/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="script.js"></script> </body> </html>
3. CREATE THE CSS FOR THE LIGHT MODEFirst, let's build the CSS for light mode, since this is the page's default state. The following CSS makes use of a column-based flexbox style that allows you to easily place elements on the page, specifically the.switch class that handles the dark mode toggle wrapper and the < img > elements.
body { font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 1.125rem; display: flex; flex-direction: column; max-width: 50rem; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0 0.9375rem; } small { font-style: italic; } article { display: flex; flex-direction: column; } img { max-width: 100%; display: block; align-self: center; } .switch { align-self: flex-end; margin: 0.9375rem; } .inner-switch { display: inline-block; cursor: pointer; border: 1px solid #555; border-radius: 1.25rem; width: 3.125rem; text-align: center; font-size: 1rem; padding: 0.1875rem; margin-left: 0.3125rem; }
The display: flex; rule applied to the tag allows the align-self to be used: flex-end; rule over the dark mode turn. The align-self CSS property aligns individual flex elements along the cross-axis (which is the left-to-right axis when a column is set to flex-direction).In this way, the move is located automatically to the top right corner of the flex container — for all viewport sizes. .switch is a full-width layout row due to the flexbox, and its height does not fall at smaller screen sizes either.Similarly, the display: flex; and flex-direction: column; rules added to the < article > tag allow align-self to be used: center; rule on all images inside the post. As a result, all the images can be conveniently focused without adding extra elements to the HTML, only for positioning purposes. 4. ADD THE SWITCH FUNCTIONALITY WITH JQUERYThe.js script file provides the toggle switch feature. Therefore, the dark mode is activated when the user clicks the toggle and the mark on the switch switches to "ON." And if, when the page is in dark mode, the user clicks the toggle, the light mode is added and the mark switches to "OFF."
$( ".inner-switch" ).on("click", function() { if( $( "body" ).hasClass( "dark" )) { $( "body" ).removeClass( "dark" ); $( ".inner-switch" ).text( "OFF" ); } else { $( "body" ).addClass( "dark" ); $( ".inner-switch" ).text( "ON" ); } });
The script above makes use of the following jQuery functions:·
on(“click”, function() {…})
is an event handler that triggers the action inside the function when the user clicks the .inner-switch element,·
hasClass()
checks if the .dark class is assigned to the .inner-switch element or not (this is based on the state of the toggle),·
removeClass()
removes the .dark class from the HTML when the user switches to light mode,·
addClass()
adds the .dark class to the HTML when the user switches to dark mode,·
text()
sets the text of the label on the switch — it’s either “OFF” or “ON”.· 5. ADD THE CSS FOR THE DARK MODEThe last thing you need to do is to define those styles for the.dark class that the jQuery script above added to the HTML when dark mode is turned on. In addition to the.dark class, apply the dark mode theme to both its direct and indirect children using the.dark * universal CSS selector.
.dark, .dark * { background-color: #222; color: #e6e6e6; border-color: #e6e6e6; }
The CSS belonging to the.dark class goes to the file ending with style.css. This is because CSS (= Cascading Style Sheets) is cascading in nature. The cascade may thus bypass the colors all over the page without bumping into specificity or other probelms.You can also create a separate dark.css file for the dark mode styles if you are creating a more complex website. In this case, be careful that you always add the unique dark.css in the < head > section of the HTML after the generic style.css file, so that the cascade will work properly.
CREATING THEME-TOGGLING FUNCTIONALITY1. Add HTML:Using any item that should store the content for which you want the interface toggle. In our case, for simplicity we'll use < body >:
Example
<body>
Add CSS:Design the item < body > and build a toggle class in.dark-mode:
Example
body { padding: 25px; background-color: white; color: black; font-size: 25px; } .dark-mode { background-color: black; color: white; }
3) Add JavaScript:Get the < body > item and switch between the class of dark-mode:
Example
function myFunction() { var element = document.body; element.classList.toggle("dark-mode"); }
ConclusionDark mode is increasingly becoming a choice for the consumer, and it is much easier to integrate it into a web app by using the Theme Provider theme wrapper in styled components. Go ahead and play with styled-components as you implement dark mode; you could add icons instead of a button.

The following CSS makes use of a column-based flexbox style that allows you to easily place elements on the page, specifically the.switch class that handles the dark mode toggle wrapper and the < img > elements.
body { font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 1.125rem; display: flex; flex-direction: column; max-width: 50rem; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0 0.9375rem; } small { font-style: italic; } article { display: flex; flex-direction: column; } img { max-width: 100%; display: block; align-self: center; } .switch { align-self: flex-end; margin: 0.9375rem; } .inner-switch { display: inline-block; cursor: pointer; border: 1px solid #555; border-radius: 1.25rem; width: 3.125rem; text-align: center; font-size: 1rem; padding: 0.1875rem; margin-left: 0.3125rem; }
$( ".inner-switch" ).on("click", function() { if( $( "body" ).hasClass( "dark" )) { $( "body" ).removeClass( "dark" ); $( ".inner-switch" ).text( "OFF" ); } else { $( "body" ).addClass( "dark" ); $( ".inner-switch" ).text( "ON" ); } });
The script above makes use of the following jQuery functions:·
on(“click”, function() {…})
is an event handler that triggers the action inside the function when the user clicks the .inner-switch element,·
hasClass()
checks if the .dark class is assigned to the .inner-switch element or not (this is based on the state of the toggle),·
removeClass()
removes the .dark class from the HTML when the user switches to light mode,·
addClass()
adds the .dark class to the HTML when the user switches to dark mode,·
text()
sets the text of the label on the switch — it’s either “OFF” or “ON”.· 5. ADD THE CSS FOR THE DARK MODEThe last thing you need to do is to define those styles for the.dark class that the jQuery script above added to the HTML when dark mode is turned on. In addition to the.dark class, apply the dark mode theme to both its direct and indirect children using the.dark * universal CSS selector.
.dark, .dark * { background-color: #222; color: #e6e6e6; border-color: #e6e6e6; }
Example
<body>
Add CSS:Design the item < body > and build a toggle class in.dark-mode:
Example
body { padding: 25px; background-color: white; color: black; font-size: 25px; } .dark-mode { background-color: black; color: white; }
3) Add JavaScript:Get the < body > item and switch between the class of dark-mode:
Example
function myFunction() { var element = document.body; element.classList.toggle("dark-mode"); }
ConclusionDark mode is increasingly becoming a choice for the consumer, and it is much easier to integrate it into a web app by using the Theme Provider theme wrapper in styled components. Go ahead and play with styled-components as you implement dark mode; you could add icons instead of a button.

Given the existence of content management systems, website development and maintenance can be so easy and effortless. But when it comes to making a website that is full of customizations, it can be a little challenging to find something that fits your requirements. The website design bases itself on a secure and sound knowledge of modern web development tools. We call these tools web technologies, because not each tool is a programming language. For instance, HTML is not a programming language. It is known as a markup language.
If you have sound knowledge of HTML, you can use it to accomplish various things related to website development. You can design a visually stunning, interactive website that can benefit anyone who uses it. But if you are not careful, you are bound to make mistakes even if you are an expert at using the tools. This blog takes you through the errors that are avoidable and are easy to handle when it comes to HTML. Let us go through them one by one.
1. All the HTML versions are the same:
You are considering all the HTML versions, the same as is a blunder and not just a HTML mistake. In every HTML definition, the document type declaration sentence is different. And it is the first thing that you define when you start writing the HTML code. With HTML5 document type declaration, you have to write <!doctype html>. But if you are working with XHTML, the document declaration is:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “https://www.w3.org /TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”>
<html xmlns=”https://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml”>
As a web developer, you should have the information about which syntax is relevant to which version of the HTML. You should know the exact syntax of the markup language version. Some HTML tags may work correctly in one version, while the same tags may not be functional in another version. Hence, it is vital to understand which version you are using and which tags are useful under that version. Moreover, HTML5 is deemed more comfortable to work with because it has the most simplified markup language.
2. Forgetting to close the tag:
It is easy to write <html> instead of <html/> because both work the same way, slash or not. But not closing the opened tags may cause you a lot of burden of removing and fixing the errors, especially if the code is long enough. For instance, if we leave the <head> tag open to the <body> tag, the entire code turns useless. And the browser thinks that the entire code has to be put together. There are several other instances where you need to check the opening and closing tags. The tags that require opening and closing should always be checked for their open and corresponding closed tags. A constant eye on the tags can help you remove the errors that may crop up. One solution to this is structuring the language in a way that it is easy to find and sift through the tags. For instance, indentation is a great way to maintain an eye on all the open tags, and hence, you can check for the required closing tags. Not closing HTML tags can be a big HTML mistake.
3. Assuming that the ideal way to work is with IDE:
IDE is Integrated Development Environment software, which has a source code editor, automation tools, and a debugger. With IDE, there is nothing special with the code apart from the one that you write according to your requirements. Moreover, if you use IDE, the codes are portable and compatible with other tools as well. But if you are a beginner, you should work with either Notepad or Notepad++. You can execute the webpage via a server or website hosting services, which can help you see if the code works accurately. A developer should avoid using IDEs if you are a novice in the domain of web development. The sole reason behind this is, IDE complicates the web development process. This may cause more harm than good.
4. Considering the text editors:
Amongst all the things, text editors are the last thing that you need to stress. Any good text editor works fine when it comes to writing the HTML syntax merely. The only thing you have to take care of is to save the file with the right extension. Editors like Notepad++ highlight the syntax, which is helpful when you are looking for errors. Moreover, it enhances the writing experience of the developer while writing the HTML markup language syntax. When it comes to development, you can use any editors as far as you save the file with the right extension, which is file.html.
5. Using CSS and JavaScript inline:
It is effortless to assume that all the codes for HTML, JavaScript, and CSS can reside in the same file. But it quickly turns into a nightmare when you have to debug the code and fix the files’ errors. The real trouble comes up when you can’t find where the fault lies because you have integrated all the code in the same file. Avoid making this HTML mistake. On the other hand, importing the JavaScript and CSS offers a lot of flexibility with the code maintenance. It is easier to make changes that are large scale when you have all the codes sitting in different files. You should follow the tradition of importing the files through the <link> tags in the <head> element and external CSS. In such a case, if there is an error, it becomes easier to track it down and solve it.
6. Comments are necessary:
Comments are often deemed unnecessary, but it becomes difficult to understand what a <div> tag functions when the code is huge. Moreover, it is incredibly inconvenient for others to find the function of a specific tag that is written by you. Hence, commenting can help you keep track of all the tags and how they play a role in web development. It becomes easier to remove and eliminate the errors when you have comments. In the absence of the comments, you have to sit down and see what each part of the code does. Sometimes, a programmer removes and adds a portion of the code to understand the existing code, which adds more issues. And, even after that, he may not be able to spot the error. But you should be careful that comments should not be longer than the code. Precise and concise comments are the key.
7. Taking care of naming convention:
The most crucial thing in any web development coding phase is to keep the variable, class, and ID names consistent and meaningful. These elements are responsible for maintaining the code fathomable and articulate. For instance, if you name a level as Addition that carries out subtraction, then it is bound to create a lot of confusion. Moreover, any error within that code can be challenging to remove because of confusing naming conventions. And, correct naming leads to a more fundamental understanding of the code when the code is extended. It helps you find which values are being used in which other parts of the code.
8. Page structure:
The page’s structure is essential as it is the result of all the heavy code you are going to write with a lot of hard work. You should have a strong understanding of which tag should go in which part of the page and what requirement. For instance, <div> tag and <span> tag works in similar ways, but you should know where both can be used correctly. Another example is, <link> tag and <a> tag. Once you understand the difference between all the tags, it becomes easy to handle the tags easily and determine which tag goes on which part of the page.
9. Taking care of attribute-value pair:
An attribute and its value are of utmost importance in the tags that use them. Some tags need an attribute and its value. It is important to understand the significance of attributes and their values. In case you are a novice, it is wise to follow the tradition before you come to terms with its understanding. For instance, <img> has an attribute called “alt”. It is important because, without it, you may not be able to see the image rendered on the web page. Moreover, if the image does not render, it still shows what the image is about. As you enter deeper into the web development, you should understand every tag and its attribute along with its value. Once you know everything about it, you can skip the redundant ones. Understanding these things and regularly checking for the repeating things can help you optimize the code.
10. Don’t design a webpage with HTML:
HTML is a markup language that can help you design a webpage only in its basic form. If you want the artistic design on the webpage, you should turn to CSS. CSS meaning Cascaded Style Sheet, is an essential tool when you want to design a webpage. Simple text formatting like bold or italic text can be accomplished using <b> and <i> tags. But if you require stylized fonts and formatting, then you should let CSS take control of it. And you can use CSS to apply any style with HTML codes. The reason behind it is, external style sheets are easier to maintain and configure according to your requirements. Moreover, as we previously saw, it is easy to find and eliminate errors if the files are separately managed. And you can target specific parts of the webpage using a style sheet.
11. Don’t use a line break to define a list:
If you are working with a list of things, then you don’t need to put a line break tag <br/> after every single item. Because, if you use <ul> or <ol> tags, you don’t need to break the line after the listed item as it is automatically inserted. For instance, if you put <br/> tag after every listed item, then it is an incorrect use of the tag. Moreover, if you are using <ul> or <ol> tags, then you should define each item of the list in <li> tag. This results in each item between the <li> and </li> tags to be listed in a different line.
12. Avoid multiple line breaks:
The <br/> tag should be used only when you have a long textual paragraph, and a word needs to get into the next line. This tag should not be used to create and maintain gaps between the elements. Instead, you should divide the text into different paragraphs or manage the margin using CSS. Hence, for this purpose, you should use the <p> tag, which helps you maintain a paragraphed writing style.
Conclusion:
HTML code has the potential for several errors, which can be easily eliminated if you pay the right amount of attention. A clear understanding of the code and its usage can save you a lot of time finding and correcting the HTML code errors. HTML is just the tip of an iceberg, but when you are using tools like PHP, Javascript, and CSS. And as the code length increases, it becomes more prone to having erroneous situations and syntax. To avoid mistakes, you should keep your information on the subject updated if there are changes in the language.
Most of the novice and sometimes advanced developers are guilty of making the mistakes, as mentioned earlier. If you follow this blog nicely, you can realize that the code is easier to maintain and also is easy to correct the errors. The blog above gives you an insight into the potential errors and can save you from time-consuming error correction procedures. As developers, we tend to complicate the code as it gets lengthier and often forgets the function of a specific code in the process. If you write the code carefully, you are less prone to make mistakes. Hence, proper attention and a keen understanding of each web development tool are imperative. It is irrelevant whether you are a novice or an expert, one mistake in the code, and it propagates in the webpage.

A Closer Look at the Outside
Fractal’s case packaging doesn’t go over the top. The ERA comes in simple monochromatic box with the appropriate color marked with a sticker, in our case, Cobalt blue.
Inside, the Era case is wrapped in a foam bag and sits in Styrofoam supports. A large flat box sits on top and holds the accessories.
Inside the box is yet another box, and the two top panels. One mesh, common to all color options, and for our model, a dark tempered glass panel.
The smaller box includes some zip ties for wire management, and a pile of screws for the motherboard, drives, and other parts.
The entire outside is almost entirely sculpted aluminum. A pattern of holes is drilled at an angle to let even more air in.
The rear looks similar to most cases, with the main surface inset a bit from the sculpted exterior surface. You get two expansion slots, an IEC C14 AC Inlet, and a fan grill with an included 80mm fan hiding behind it and the standard motherboard rear-IO cutout.
The right-hand side also has a drilled grill pattern on the rear half for airflow.
The top is plastic with a few magnetic posts sticking up. Both top options are not installed while shipping.
#gallery-0-21 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-21 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The top panels sit in place and are held magnetically. A fairly wide gap surrounds the installed top panel for exhaust airflow.
A Closer Look at the Inside
The left and right doors just pull outwards from the top and lift off the bottom to remove, no tools needed.
The studs are a permanent part of the door and snap into the main chassis at the top.
The top is somewhat spring loaded and not an issue but the bottom of the door uses rubber washers to absorb any sort of vibration to keep the ERA quiet.
There are several studs on the inside of the panels that the included dust filter snaps on to. The filter itself is plastic so it can be washed and re-used.
With the doors off, the inside of the ERA is very busy. There are brackets everywhere and a pretty good pile of cables for such a small case.
The first bracket you’ll need to move holds one 3.5” drive with vibration dampening or a pair of 2.5” drives natively. If you are willing to get a little creative with double-sided tape or similar, there is room for several more 2.5” drives on this bracket.
With the drive bracket out of the way, and the cables moved, you get a look at the rest of the pre-installed brackets. Two PSU mounts and another drive bracket make up these options.
The internal bracket holds yet again, one 3.5” drive on vibration absorbers or two 2.5” drives. The power supply brackets can be moved up or down to several different positions to help accommodate different hardware combinations.
The ERA case comes with both power supply mounting brackets, one for ATX, and one for SFX or SFX-L units.
#gallery-0-22 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-22 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-22 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-22 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The top frame easily pops out for access to mounting locations for fans or a cooler, as well as washing the built-in fan filter.
#gallery-0-23 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-23 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The rear power inlet is hardwired to an internal extension cable and routed towards the front of the case. It ends in a matching low-profile, right-angle plug. Since 80mm fans are not as common as they once were, Fractal includes one pre-installed on the rear panel for a bit of additional ventilation.
The front-rear corner of the motherboard tray has a Fractal branded Velcro wrap pre-installed for cable management.
For front panel wiring, you get a USB 3 and USB Type-C connectors.
The USB Type-C front panel header uses a very thin cable and a small plug. With many boards having this plug pointed out rather than towards and edge, this makes sure your cable doesn’t interfere with other components like coolers.
Standard audio, and Power switch and LED plugs round out the front panel I/O.
System Build & Testing
We happened to have a Fractal Celsius S24 already sitting on the shelf, so we decided to give it a go here.
Internals will be as follows: Gigabyte B450 I AORUS PRO WIFI AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 16GB of G.Skill Trident Z 3000MHz AMD Radeon RX 5700XT 512GB OCZ RD400 M.2 Corsair SF750 SFX Power Supply.
With most compact builds, you’ll not want to really go ham on mounting everything until you check clearances, cable lengths, and similar. Sometimes things need to move or flip around to solve clearance issues or routing as you build, so you’ll see we only install everything with a screw or two until we are sure about everything.
#gallery-0-24 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-24 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
We started by loosely mounting the Celsius S24 cooler with two screws in opposite corners to gauge tubing runs and power supply mounting.
After this we slapped the motherboard in with CPU and ram pre-installed and then installed the GPU. We also loosely installed the SFX power supply bracket so we could hold the power supply in place and make sure the power plug cleared the fans on the cooler.
Corsair’s tiny SF750 power supply mounts like any other SFX power supply. We turned it so the power switch was towards the main door on the left side.
After this, we ran all of the power cables, which consist of the main 24-pin, a single 8-pin EPS, and a single GPU cable with twin 6+2 connectors for the Radeon 5700XT. You can access the rear of the CPU socket easily so we went ahead and installed the business end of the liquid cooler at this stage. It’s at a slight angle so as not to pull too tightly on the hoses, but it won’t hurt anything and this isn’t a windowed case anyway.
The Celsius S24 cooler can run the tubing right behind the power supply towards the front of the case as long as it’s all the way forward itself.
We made sure the power supply’s normally external switch is turned ‘on’ now before we have to open the door again later.
At this point, we ran the front panel cables to the appropriate places on the board, connected the fan cables from the cooler, and cable managed everything. There is a ton of space for slack cable between the GPU and the motherboard tray, so we hid most of the slack there.

For as compact as the ERA is, there is a ton of space. There are a lot of places to stuff cables that don’t affect airflow, so you end up with a very clean build.
We have a pretty potent 8-core system in here, so let’s close her up and see how it does thermally.
Testing
We start with the glass cover, the least amount of ventilation, and likely the worst temps. After getting distracted and running a bit over our 30-minute run time, we see a CPU max temp of 76C on the CPU. We would love to tell you noise levels, but our sound meter only goes down to 30dB and unless you stick it in the fan blades, it’s too quiet to register.
The GPU itself enjoys a nice supply of fresh air which is then exhausted right out the back of the case, so it only gets to a pretty typical 82C max.
We let the system idle for an hour and switched to the mesh cover for the next test. We ran the same test (and yet again got distracted) and ended up with a max CPU temp of 72C, 4C cooler than with the glass cover. We don’t consider this significant for the overwhelming majority of users.
Even if you keep your system pegged out for hours at a time rendering, you likely won’t see any performance difference unless you are overclocking to the bleeding edge using either top cover. It’s great to see that this choice is largely aesthetic with a minimal performance impact. It shows that the ERA has pretty solid airflow.
Final Thoughts & Conclusion
Flexibility usually means space but Fractal tosses that notion right out the door with the ERA. There is nothing really new here, things like removable drive mounts and different options for PSU types have been around for a while now. What IS new is the combination of features. Not only can you pick ATX or SFX power supplies, but you can also move the mount up and down to accommodate different cooling options. If you need storage beyond on-board M.2 drives, you have the option to install up to two big hard drives, four 2.5” drives, or some combination of both.
Our Only real complaint is the GPU area. Most video cards form the last few generations have shipped with a 2.x slot cooler that is just a little too thick to use here. A lot of the case is designed to be silent, but limiting you to a blower cooler is going to really backtrack on that. Either making the case just a few millimetres taller or shifting the internals up a touch would give you enough room for a thicker cooler. There is plenty of airflow, its just a clearance issue. One superficial complaint is the power button. It does its job, but I personally wish it had a bit more click or was a touch more tactile.
If you can appreciate the engineering Fractal has managed here, the inside of the ERA is every bit as beautiful as the outside. If you don’t, well, it’s an easy case to build in that supports a ton of flexibility in a beautifully sculpted aluminum shell. If looks are all that matter to you, you’ll also be quite pleased that selecting the glass or wooden top won’t really have much impact on your temps or corresponding performance. It’s nice not to have to make compromises. The $160 street price is on the higher end for ITX/SFF cases, but we feel the high-quality anodized shell, flexible configuration, included top options, color choice assortment and overall design and quality are well inline with the asking price.
Great Job Fractal!

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Switzerland so how do you stop him?
Cristiano Ronaldo hit a stunning hat-trick this week to book his place in yet another final.
Teams, players and managers have been trying to stop him for years with varying degrees of success.
Here, Sportsmail spoke to those tasked with trying to contain Ronaldo's unrivalled brilliance.
Cristiano Ronaldo hit a stunning hat trick this week to book his place in yet another final
Tormented on my debut … and his debut!
Bolton defender Nicky Hunt made his debut for Sam Allardyce as a 19-year-old full back on the opening day of the 2003-04 season.
The opponents were Manchester United at Old Trafford and the score was 1-0 to the home side when another teenager, Cristiano Ronaldo, came off the bench to make his debut. For Hunt, alarm bells rank quickly.
"I remember boarding the team and I was mostly thinking about my own debut nerves. But then Ronaldo came on for Nicky Butt and he was up against me. United scored three more inside 20 minutes and he won a penalty and assisted another goal.
"I put a hard tackle in within 25 seconds of him coming on and another two minutes later. He just got up. His attitude was a sink or swim and he is a Michael Phelps level swimmer. He did these lightning quick stepovers. Totally frightening. You don't have time to adjust your feet. It was like a kid in the playground doing tricks and copying their idols.
"I remember the dressing room afterwards. Big Sam came in and he and his assistant Phil Brown shook my hand and said, "We've got a player on our hands there." We were all talking about him on the bus on the way home. "
Ronaldo came off the bench to make his debut in the 2003-04 season against Bolton
We had THREE on him as soon as he got it
Birkir Mar Saevarsson was part of the Iceland defense on the day his country secured a famous draw against Portugal at the start of Euro 2016.
'We rarely adopt a strategy for individuals but we make exceptions for extraordinary talents such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. It can be very scary in one-on-one situations. But don't be star struck. I thought about him in the same way as any Icelandic player in our national league. If he goes fits me, it had to be on the outside towards the corner flag.
"We limited those scenarios. As soon as he received the ball, the winger and the central midfielder would close in on him to create a 3 v 1 situation.
"Top players hate playing against us. He scored once in three games against Iceland and that was a free kick. At Euro 2016, we sensed his frustration and he didn't score. He couldn't find his rhythm. He got very few chances. You see the body language and the effort become less and less. I think he said something to some of our players.
"It's important to limit the service. Iceland create a beehive when we don't have the ball. We work our asses off and give less space to the stars than any other team. That's what you have to do to have a chance of stopping him. "
One hard tackle and he was gone!
Ashley Cole enjoyed many battles for club and country against Ronaldo and proved to be one of the Portuguese's toughest opponents.
When asked repeatedly during his career to name his toughest opponent, Cristiano Ronaldo has always returned the answer as Ashley Cole. The pair clashed many times during Ronaldo's six-year period at Manchester United while Cole turned out for Arsenal and Chelsea and the duo also with the international stage.
Before one fixture in 2004, Cole said of the young Ronaldo : 'Last season they gave him the ball in the first 10 minutes, he did his tricks and I slipped over a few times. After that, though, I gave him a hard tackle and he was gone. "
Ronaldo recently observed:" Over the years I had some great battles with Ashley Cole, he doesn't give you a second to breathe. He was such a tenacious player when he was at his peak – quick, tough in the tackle. You knew it would never be an easy game. ”
Cole's most memorable moment against Ronaldo came during a 1-1 draw for Chelsea at Old Trafford in 2006. United fans chanted abuse at Cole and the defender patted his shorts to show he had Ronaldo in his pocket. When quizzed on Sky Sports this year to choose Lionel Messi or Ronaldo, Cole said: "It has to be Messi. People talk about Ronaldo more because I played against him more. "

He was RELENTLESS, HUNGRY … AND SMART
Jose Luis Mendilibar coached three different sides – Valladolid, Osasuna and Eibar – against Ronaldo and suffered with all of them. This year his Eibar took on Real Madrid without Ronaldo and beat them 3-0.
"I was one of those who thought Madrid could be just as effective without him. I thought they would be more unpredictable and with other people stepping up but no one has his hunger for score and his relentless accuracy and power of shot.
"And he's smart. If we were attacking down our right side he took up a position high up on the other side of the pitch – as far away from our focus and our concentration of players as possible. They would know to look for him there when they broke quickly.
"We knew communication had to be very good between defenders because he would try to run in between full backs and center backs. But we wouldn't obsess about him in preparation for games. With the shot that he has his power in the air too, he needs less than a half chance to score. "
He has no weakness
Spanish full back Javi Venta first faced Ronaldo in November 2008 when Manchester United were en route to the Moscow final. Ronaldo was considered a winger at the time, although one who frequently found himself in central positions. Villarreal stopped him scoring although he rattled the crossbar with one shot. And they got a 0-0 draw that saw both them and United through the knockout stages.
"He was quicker then. You gave him space and he killed you. Concentration levels had to be really high and the idea was to be on top of him before he had just received the ball.
'If you let him have it in space with time to pick up some momentum he would just go fits you. "
He would face Ronaldo again after the Portuguese international moved to Real Madrid. "Some of the pace has gone but the shooting is better than ever before. He shoots off both feet so it's not a case of showing him on his weaker side because there isn't one. "
Venta was an unused substitute when Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Levante in an 8- 0 win in 2010. "He has no weakness," he says. "And he is such a winner too. That's another change from the early days. There is more patience now. All players mature and he leads the attack now. He's just outstanding in everything. '

JUNE 19TH, 1954
AFTER BEING DECLARED “incompetent” by a Jackson County court, a 15 year-old boy is transferred into the custody of the Florida State hospital; Within 48 hours of his arrival, he is pronounced dead. But Cause of death? Well that would depend on which page of the boy’s file that you’re looking at. Only one of many questionable things that could be found within the roughly 200 pages that I was handed back in August of 2018. By the time I read through the content, I would be so confused that I would have to go back & read through the pages two more times, spending considerable time on each individual page taking notes; So many things failed to make sense, reminding me just how evil what we were dealing with was.
THOMAS HERBERT WIGGINS
BORN TO OLLIE & Jeffie Wiggins in March of 1937, Thomas Herbert Wiggins was the youngest of 2 boys. His life would begin in Opp, Alabama but the Wiggins family would eventually relocate to the Florida Panhandle to continue raising their boys. At 1st they would report only seeing subtle differences between their oldest & youngest sons. Where Thomas’s big brother was very social & outgoing, Thomas was extremely introverted, preferring to be by himself. He showed no interest in playing sports OR becoming involved in other activities, unlike his sibling who excelled in both sports & academics & was also popular amongst his peers. While this may have been reason to give pause for a moment Mr. & Mrs. Wiggins didn’t panic initially, however, by age 11, Thomas began showing signs of extreme paranoia. He started to fixate on his food being poisoned. His course of action would be to refuse food, often go days without eating.
The Oshner Clinic ~ 1950
WHEN THOMAS’S “SPELLS” became violent, his parents would finally seek help for their son. He would 1st be evaluated at Oshner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana.
WHILE HE WAS there, Dr. C. Harrison Snyder & staff would perform extensive testing before issuing their findings & recommendations to the Wiggins family. Dr. Snyder reported that ALL tests were normal, including his cognitive functioning & intelligence. He recommended that Thomas be kept at home & receive plenty of love & positive attention from his family as well as be returned to his previous school where he was thriving & happy. In a nutshell, Dr. Snyder stated that being loved & cared for by his family within the security of his home would be key to Thomas being successful in life.
IN HIS FINAL statement, the doctor requested to be notified within a month’s time of Thomas’s progress. I can say with confidence that they didn’t follow up with the Oshner Clinic as specified. I’m also positive that the Wiggins’ decided that keeping their family intact would not be an option as a little over 2 years later, he would be committed to the Florida State Hospital & when removed by his father, just 3 months after admission, they would send a letter to the medical director reporting that they were looking at boarding schools.
OTHER THAN THAT letter there is nothing else recorded about how Thomas was doing OR his whereabouts for over a year until he was sentenced to the Dozier School for Boys in September of 1953. It’s easy to wonder:
WHERE THE HELL WAS THOMAS WIGGINS FOR THE YEAR IN BETWEEN??
PAGE BY EXCRUTIATING PAGE
IT WOULD BE an impossible task to list out every page of Thomas’s file in detail BUT what I am going to do is list out some of the more interesting & questionable items that I’ve seen. For the sake of everyone’s sanity, I’m only going to talk about some of the more questionable details leading to his 1952 commitment to the State Hospital in Chattahoochee, Florida through when he would become an inmate at Dozier in September of 1953. Everything after will be covered in the next couple of posts.
Anyone interested in reading it in its entirety can click here:
Wiggins Case File
SO LET’S START with the basics….
WHAT IN GOD’S NAME IS THE DIAGNOSIS??
I COUNTED NOTHING short of half a dozen different reasons for Thomas’s commitment to the Florida State Hospital in 1952. That’s right SIX different diagnoses, ALL independent of one another, each listed on separate areas of a form OR on a completely different form altogether. Though most were pretty common by today’s standards, one REALLY stuck out like a sore thumb. See if Y’all can figure out which one I’m talking about…
1) Schizophrenic
2) Agressive Psychosis
3) Dementia Praecox
4) Homosexuality
5) Vivid Hallucinations
6) Mental Incompetency
DOES ANYTHING ON the list jump out at you?? If you said number 4, you’re definitely NOT alone! When I saw “Homosexuality” listed as a diagnosis, I was stunned…At least initially. It didn’t take long for the shock to wear off & everything started to make sense. I’ll cop to the possibility that Tommy may have had some serious mental health issues BUT it was all too clear that the family’s major concern was that he may be gay.
THIS PARTICULAR “ISSUE” had got me thinking; Was Thomas gay & the fact that he was unable to express this the reason for some of these other issues that he was having OR did these other mental issues exist within him already, only to be exasperated by the frustration that he must have felt not being able to be his true self?
UNFORTUNATELY, WE WILL probably never know the answer & even if we did, it’s far too late to help Thomas now.
THE PROOF LIES IN THE INCONSISTENCIES
OFFICIALLY LABELING THOMAS’S “problem” would NOT be the only inconsistency. I have to bring up one of the most careless, idiotic mistakes that someone in an official capacity can make; Getting a patient’s date of birth/age incorrect on forms inside of their chart. I wish I could say that this was just a one time deal that was due to a typo BUT it wasn’t.
THIS PARTICULAR INDISCRETION became a common occurrence over a number of Thomas’s documents. His year of birth was changed from 1937 to 1938, even at one point listing his birth month as May instead of March. His age often fluctuated. For example, one form would list Thomas as being 14, however, another would show his age at 15, even though the completion date on both matched.
IN ALL ACTUALITY, the entire file was so chaotic that it took forever to get through. Every time I’d begin scanning a page, I’d notice something odd & have to stop to make a note about it. For instance, I’d read a doctor’s comment about how Thomas was only apt to self harm & then the next page would have that same physician noting that his “Propensity was to harm others.” My personal favorite was when the attending physician reported that there was really nothing outstanding about Tommy but immediately goes on to state that “Tommy is extremely ill.” Did this educated physician, who was the Medical Director of the Florida State Hospital, realize that he contradicted himself on a regular basis? If he DIDN’T, he’s an idiot & if he DID than he’s a jackass…Either scenario made poor Tommy up shit’s creek when it came to receiving ANY type of reliable treatment.
IN SPITE OF Thomas’s illness being described as dire, it ultimately didn’t prevent his father from discharging him only a few months into his treatment. Though we have no record of what happened during his year away from FSH, we can assume that he continued to decline…OR as I see it, he wouldn’t stop being gay. Thomas would resurface again BUT this time he wouldn’t be receiving hospital care, he would be sent to a brutal reform school located in Marianna, Florida where he would live out the remaining days of his way too short life.

Packaged in a standard brown cardboard box is the Corsair Crystal 680X RGB. You kind of get a feel of what the case looks like, but you do get much more detail of what the inside of the case looks like with a very detailed exploded view.
#gallery-0-17 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-17 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-17 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-17 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Once taken out of the box and its styrofoam cocoon you will find that the Corsair Crystal 680X RGB has yet another form of protection with a cloth bag over the case. You also get quick access to the case manual and a screen with magnets on it. We will figure out where that goes later. A small, yet effective, a piece of foam is placed at the top of the case between the glass front panel and the bezel. This is done for the reason that the top right portion of the glass is not directly attached to the case.

[section_title title=Introduction to the Corsair 680X RGB PC Case]
[section_title title=Closer Look at the Corsair 680X RGB PC Case]
From this view, we can see a majority of the items that make this PC case different than most. Made of metal, plastic, and glass is nothing new, but the style, design, and layout are. On three sides of the Corsair Crystal 680X, we have some sort of tempered glass. The top and front pieces of glass cover the ventilation opening and where either fans or radiators may be installed. The largest piece is the all glass (minus the hinges) side panel.
Let us start our journey of the Corsair 680X at the top of the case and we find that you have buttons and connection available to you. The buttons include the power and reset, while your other connections are placed between them. The ports that you can access are mic/headphone, Type-C 3.1, and USB 3.0. It might seem like a minor detail, but I do like that the rest and power buttons are not next to each other to help prevent those accidental button pushes.
Sliding over to the left we get a better look at the top panel and the glass that decorates and protects this area. I know the first thing you are saying is “That glass will restrict the air flow!”. As we can see that the glass is raised up off the top of the case and is totally unblocked on all four sides. A rough measurement gives us a total of 22.5 square inches of open space for the air to escape.
If you would like to remove or replace the tempered glass, four thumbs screws can be removed and then the smoked glass can be taken off.
Looking at the front of the Corsair 680X we see the second piece of glass. Like the top piece this on is raised off the front of the air intake about .5 of an inch and is 18.5 inches long and 7.5 inches wide. Although it is raised off the case the front panels are made to blend the glass into the design. Along the left side of the front panel eight .5 x 1.5-inch vents are added to increase the amount of air allowed into the case. I looked on how the panel could be removed and found that it would require a small Philips screwdriver and probably 20-30 minutes as it appears that you would have to take most of the front section apart.
#gallery-0-19 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-19 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-19 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-19 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Moving to the right side of the case, which has a solid side panel, we see that there is plenty of air intake. An included magnetic fan filter is placed over the perforated metal. Why is there an air intake placed here? This is where the intake of the power supply will be getting its fresh air.
The rear of the case gives us a glimpse of what the inside might be like. The right looks like your typical modern day pc case, but it is quickly noticed that the power is over the left and has been turned vertically. Above that we can see were plenty of air can flow in or out of the Corsair 680X with or without the assistance of fans.
Turning the case so that we can see the bottom allows us to see that a plastic removable dust filter covers an opening that enters the main cavity of the case.
[section_title title=A look inside of the Corsair 680X RGB]
It is about time that we jump into the inside of the case, but first, we get a pretty good view of the left, all glass, side panel. A black stripe along the edge of the panel helps hides the sides of the metal case giving it a cleaner look. Two hinges are at the rear and are attached to the panel with a single screw on each hinge.
The door is held closed with lightly powered magnets at the top and bottom right side of the glass. Just enough strength to panel closed and that a slight tug with allow the door to open. A single screw on the top hinge can be removed to allow the entire door to be taken off for easy access.
The all-white interior matches the outer color keeping the “snow blind” look intact. A huge hole in the motherboard mounting area gives everyone a generous amount of access to the backside of any motherboard installed in the case. 9 rubbers grommet pass through areas and three small holes at the very base give any PC builder plenty of options to run wires and cables.
Included with the Corsair Crystal 680X is an SP120 fan at the rear. From this viewpoint, there are vertical GPU mounting slots available with all the other normal I/O port outlets.
Turning our attention the front side we see that we also get 3 LL120 RGB fans with the purchase of the Corsair Crystal Series 680X RGB. The three LL120 RGB fans give you a total of 48 customizable RBG LED’s. If you noticed there are two thumb screws just off to the right of the top and lower fans. Once removed you can take out the whole panel with the fans are attached to it.
#gallery-0-20 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-20 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-20 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-20 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The two front panels (one left, one right) can be removed to get access to those areas behind them to do what you like.
#gallery-0-21 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-21 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
The top inside of the case shows us where you can install fans and radiators of different sizes. Once again with the removal of two thumb screws, you can completely remove the mounting bracket.
A true totally tool-less storage cage made of plastic allows you to put plenty of 2.5 and 3.5 drives into the Crystal 680X. For the 2.5 size drives, all you need to do is insert them till you hear a click, while the 3.5 drives have just a few more steps of removing the holder, insert the drive while letting the 4 pins snap into the screw holes. Then all you have to do is replace the holder, with the drive, back in the cage and you are all done. Let’s say you do not need four holders for SSD’s. simply remove the ones you do not need. The 2.5 cages are locked together with “arrow” shaped tabs that when tugged on snap apart and back together again.
Mounting of the power supply is pretty straight forward. Make sure you remove the small holding tab on the larger plate. This small tab, once reinstalled, will keep the PSU from moving around during transportation. 4 rubber pads isolate the PSU from the mounting hardware thus helping to eliminate any possible noise to be transferred to the case.
What we see here is the Lighting Node Pro… and this what? This turns the Corsair Crystal Series 680X RGB into a smart case which allows you to control and synchronize RGB lighting through the Corsair iCUE software and across all iCUE compatible products that include fans, RGB LED light strips, DDR4 memory, keyboards, mice and more.

[section_title title=Final Thought on the Crystal Series Corsair 680X]
After digging around, taking it apart and installing a system I will have to say that I believe the Corsair 680X RGB is made mostly for high airflow cooling. Corsair does list a lot of possibilities to mount radiators of all sizes, yet you really have nowhere to install a good size pump and reservoir. This leads me to think that they are hoping/pushing you to install one of the Corsair AIO’s. Which is not a bad idea, considering the smaller inside size of the 680X. Now I am not saying that a custom water cooling loop could not be installed. You will just have to down-size some the components or maybe placing in them on the non-viewable side. But, as case modders will do, a window could be easily be added to show off the water cooling hardware.
Not being a fan of all the crazy RBG stuff when it is pushed upon you and can’t you can do nothing about it or with it. I will say that the NODE Pro and iCUE software helped ease my pain. Playing around with it and being able to set a nice single color that was not too bright, made me rather happy. The two products allow you to do so much with the lighting that found myself playing with the lights and effects for quite some time.
#gallery-0-23 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-23 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Placing the power supply vertically behind the motherboard mounting was smart for several reasons. One is that you have now created a compartmentalized case that has removed some of the heat from one area completely. Second, you have now lowered the overall height of the case, yet you can still install an ATX sized motherboard. Lastly, you made a huge area to route and hide every single cable. Great for those that just hate to do cable management but want a clean looking inside, but also great for those that must make sure that every tiny cable is folding, routed, and tied down.
At a suggested price of $249.99USD, some might think that is a very tall price to ask for. But, if you step back, look at what you are getting and add up the pricing of the NODE Pro, three LL120 RGB fans and a fourth 120mm rear fan you are already at about $160+. So this means you are only paying about $80 for the case. Overall I do like the look (minus the top glass piece…) and size of the Corsair 680X RGB. The white color gives a great base for someone like me, a modder, to paint the case any color I want it to be. If you are looking for your next custom build and want it to be incredibly easy and undeniably cool then I would recommend that you take a long look at the 680X RGB. So with that said I have already installed a new system into the Crystal Series Corsair 680X RBG and will be using it soon as my daily PC, but I think I am going to keep it white… for now.

Implementation of dark mode in reaction devices
One of the apps features most requested is the dark mode (or night mode, as others call it). In the apps which we use every day, we see dark mode. From smartphones to web applications, the dark mode has become important to businesses wishing to look after their users' eyes.
The dark mode is an add-on feature that often shows dark surfaces in the UI. Most big corporations (such as YouTube, Twitter, and Netflix) have brought their smartphone and web applications into dark mode.
Although we are not going to go into React and styled-components in detail, a simple knowledge of React,
CSS
, and styled-components would be useful.
A few days before this article was written,
StackOverflow
announced its release of dark mode, offering users the opportunity to switch between the two modes.
Dark mode eliminates eye pressure and aids when operating on a device or cell phone for a long period of time.
What Is Dark Mode?
The dark mode is the color scheme of any device showing light text and device elements on a dark backdrop, making it a little easier for the user to view cell phones, tablets, and computers. Dark mode decreases the light produced by the screen while preserving the minimum color-contrast ratios that are appropriate for reading.
Why Should You Care About Dark Mode?
Dark mode improves visual ergonomics by reducing eye strain, adapting the screen to current light conditions, and ensuring ease of use in dark environments or at night.Let's look at its benefits before we introduce dark mode in our app.
BATTERY SAVING
Dark mode in Web and mobile apps will extend a device's battery life. Google stated that dark mode on OLED screens has been a tremendous help to battery life.
For example, the dark mode in the YouTube app saves about 15 percent more screen energy than a flat white background at 50 percent brightness. The dark GUI saves a whopping 60 percent of screen energy at 100 percent screen brightness.
DARK MODE IS BEAUTIFUL
The dark mode is stunning, and can greatly enhance the screen's appeal.
Although most products go for the same bland white look, the dark mode offers something else that looks both mysterious and fresh.
It also offers great opportunities for a fresh presentation of graphic material, such as dashboards, videos, and images.
Now that you know why you should implement dark mode in your next web app, let's dive deep into style-components, which in this tutorial's defining resources.
The dark mode is the color scheme of any interface that displays light text and interface elements on a dark background, making viewing on mobile phones, tablets, and computers a little easier.
What Are Styled-Components?
We will be using the styled-components library very much in this post. There have always been a lot of ways to design a modern web application. A document-level there is the conventional styling approach which involves creating an index.css file and linking it to the HTML or styling within the HTML file.
A lot has changed in the way web apps are recently designed after CSS-in-JS was introduced.
CSS-in-JS refers to a pattern where JavaScript is used to compose the Html. To style components in a JavaScript file, it uses tagged template literals. The styled component is a CSS-in-JS library that allows you to use all the CSS features you need, including media queries, pseudo-selectors, and nesting.
Why Styled-Components?
For the following reasons styled-components were created:
As we continue this tutorial, we will investigate the thematic features of modeled components more deeply
SETTING UP
1. CREATE THE FILE STRUCTURE
Creating a folder and inserting within it three empty text files: one with.html, one with.css, and one with.js. Also, create a folder of images for the photos you wish to view on the website.
JQuery also makes use of our "dark mode in CSS" demo. In the example, we are going to add the script right from the Cloudflare CDN to the HTML file so that it is always up to date. If you like, however, you can download and add the jQuery library as a local.js file as well.
Here's how the file structure will look before coding begins:
- dark-mode-css/ - images/ - cake.jpg - index.html - script.js - style.css
2. MARK UP THE HTML
Add the dark-mode switch to the top of the page in the HTML. Then create a < h1 > title tag, and a semantic < article > tag for the page's content. Finally, just before the < /body > tag closes add the two < script > tags.
Please note that before the custom script you are adding the jQuery library so it can use its functionalities. The style.css file will go into the page's < head > section.
<!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta charset="UTF-8"> <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0"> <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="ie=edge"> <title>Demo | Dark Mode in CSS</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="style.css"> </head> <body> <div class="switch">Dark mode: <span class="inner-switch">OFF</span> </div> <h1 class="title">The Best Recipes of All Time</h1> <article> <h1>Raspberry Cake</h1> <p><small>Created with Cupcake Ipsum</small></p> <p>...</p> <img src="images/cake.jpg"> <p>...</p> </article> <script src="https://cdnjs.cloudflare.com/ajax/libs/jquery/3.4.0/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="script.js"></script> </body> </html>
3. CREATE THE CSS FOR THE LIGHT MODE
First, let's build the CSS for light mode, since this is the page's default state. The following CSS makes use of a column-based flexbox style that allows you to easily place elements on the page, specifically the.switch class that handles the dark mode toggle wrapper and the < img > elements.
body { font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 1.125rem; display: flex; flex-direction: column; max-width: 50rem; margin: 0 auto; padding: 0 0.9375rem; } small { font-style: italic; } article { display: flex; flex-direction: column; } img { max-width: 100%; display: block; align-self: center; } .switch { align-self: flex-end; margin: 0.9375rem; } .inner-switch { display: inline-block; cursor: pointer; border: 1px solid #555; border-radius: 1.25rem; width: 3.125rem; text-align: center; font-size: 1rem; padding: 0.1875rem; margin-left: 0.3125rem; }
The display: flex; rule applied to the tag allows the align-self to be used: flex-end; rule over the dark mode turn. The align-self CSS property aligns individual flex elements along the cross-axis (which is the left-to-right axis when a column is set to flex-direction).
In this way, the move is located automatically to the top right corner of the flex container — for all viewport sizes. .switch is a full-width layout row due to the flexbox, and its height does not fall at smaller screen sizes either.
Similarly, the display: flex; and flex-direction: column; rules added to the < article > tag allow align-self to be used: center; rule on all images inside the post. As a result, all the images can be conveniently focused without adding extra elements to the HTML, only for positioning purposes.
4. ADD THE SWITCH FUNCTIONALITY WITH JQUERY
The.js script file provides the toggle switch feature. Therefore, the dark mode is activated when the user clicks the toggle and the mark on the switch switches to "ON." And if, when the page is in dark mode, the user clicks the toggle, the light mode is added and the mark switches to "OFF."
$( ".inner-switch" ).on("click", function() { if( $( "body" ).hasClass( "dark" )) { $( "body" ).removeClass( "dark" ); $( ".inner-switch" ).text( "OFF" ); } else { $( "body" ).addClass( "dark" ); $( ".inner-switch" ).text( "ON" ); } });
The script above makes use of the following jQuery functions:
·
on(“click”, function() {…})
is an event handler that triggers the action inside the function when the user clicks the .inner-switch element,
·
hasClass()
checks if the .dark class is assigned to the .inner-switch element or not (this is based on the state of the toggle),
·
removeClass()
removes the .dark class from the HTML when the user switches to light mode,
·
addClass()
adds the .dark class to the HTML when the user switches to dark mode,
·
text()
sets the text of the label on the switch — it’s either “OFF” or “ON”.
· 5. ADD THE CSS FOR THE DARK MODE
The last thing you need to do is to define those styles for the.dark class that the jQuery script above added to the HTML when dark mode is turned on. In addition to the.dark class, apply the dark mode theme to both its direct and indirect children using the.dark * universal CSS selector.
.dark, .dark * { background-color: #222; color: #e6e6e6; border-color: #e6e6e6; }
The CSS belonging to the.dark class goes to the file ending with style.css. This is because CSS (= Cascading Style Sheets) is cascading in nature. The cascade may thus bypass the colors all over the page without bumping into specificity or other probelms.
You can also create a separate dark.css file for the dark mode styles if you are creating a more complex website. In this case, be careful that you always add the unique dark.css in the < head > section of the HTML after the generic style.css file, so that the cascade will work properly.
CREATING THEME-TOGGLING FUNCTIONALITY
1. Add HTML:
Using any item that should store the content for which you want the interface toggle. In our case, for simplicity we'll use < body >:
Example
<body>
Add CSS:
Design the item < body > and build a toggle class in.dark-mode:
Example
body { padding: 25px; background-color: white; color: black; font-size: 25px; } .dark-mode { background-color: black; color: white; }
3) Add JavaScript:
Get the < body > item and switch between the class of dark-mode:
Example
function myFunction() { var element = document.body; element.classList.toggle("dark-mode"); }
Conclusion
Dark mode is increasingly becoming a choice for the consumer, and it is much easier to integrate it into a web app by using the ThemeProvider theme wrapper in styled components. Go ahead and play with styled-components as you implement dark mode; you could add icons instead of a button.
