absolutely not looking at my dash or any tags right now in a desperate attempt to avoid all 2x05 spoilers but i'm reading tvl and it truly is striking how lestat's number one defining character trait so far isn't that he's a bloodsucking immortal monster or that he's thoughtless and cruel and selfish... it's that he's loving and thoughtful and absolutely terrified of the idea of being alone. he was abused by his father and brothers as a child, forced to take on the role of provider as a teenager so that his family wouldn't starve. his mother at best was emotionally shut off and at worst utterly neglectful of his needs. he was ripped from the monastery where he'd been so happy as a boy and finally felt like he'd belonged. taken from his life with nicki in paris. his best friend. his lover. the one person in the whole world he could talk to and confide in. forced into vampirism by a maker who told him nothing and left him to figure it out all on his own...
and still the only thing he can think of is taking care of the people he loves...... and i'm feeling totally normal about it you guys.
#lestat is obviously MANY THINGS and i personally like that he can be really nasty and temperamental and terrible at expressing his emotions#in a way that isn't Shouting Frenchly#but it's esp striking in this part of the book where gabrielle is becoming an obvious foil for the sort of vampire lestat actually is#that he just loves so deeply and it's such an intrinsic part of who he is#anyway shutting up now lol#interview with the vampire#the vampire lestat
