Well… Some random ass thoughts about Rebecca (1997), the British miniseries.
Random rambles, nothing serious. Spoilers ahead.
Ngl it was a really wild ride; I accidentally spoilt myself by discovering that Maximilian killed his wife (I was looking at the wiki about the different adaptations and how the, most likely, Hays code fucked the 1940 version, which I might actually watch out of curiosity)
Knowing that important piece of info, I was: “Ok… This is an old man marrying, as he himself said, someone who could be his daughter and killed his late wife… Hm… Your average “too good to be true” husband… She’s gonna find out and he’s going to try and kill her.” All their banter and him being a moody mf really suggested this. I was ready to do a meme about this, haha.
But I was mistaken. He himself told her (which made me laugh out of surprise, it really shocked me) and Mrs. De Winter (btw we don’t get her name, maybe because, being in 1st person, it wants the reader to insert themselves better in the story? Idk, I should read it tho ) and she was really chill about that, a bit taken aback yes… But really calm. This was a pleasant surprise, I’ve got to be honest, seeing something not so obvious - I mean.
Things took a really interesting turn from here: we learned how much Maxim hated Rebecca and how she was unfaithful to him (expected), but wasn’t expecting Mrs Danvers to actually admit to being into a lesbian relationship with Rebecca, I was suspecting something like this, but it really surprised how she admitted it. Also unexpected was Rebecca’s condition and how she just used Maxim to end her pain and how… Well? Things turned for the protag and her husband… I mean… He lost Manderley (a big joke after all he did to preserve it) and his pp got burned off (she truly did get her revenge after all)… So… “well”, but didn’t die and continued his life with a woman who loved him.
Mrs Danvers was a bit fucked up… I do understand how she was left traumatised and hollow by Rebecca’s death, but trying to make the protagonist kill herself was a nasty move… It was not her fault (even tho I think she was trying to hurt him more using her).
Favelle was utterly destroyed when he learnt how his affair wasn’t much more than that, rip poor fellow.
I had a good time, this didn’t go the direction I was expecting, which is nice
Really late, almost 3 am
