like so many "old-fashioned" English lit, IMTV is definitely braindead on the issue of the race, but honestly idk what the showrunners of the AMC adaptation wanted to do for part II/s2 of the show and it's making me kinda nervous. They racebent Louis and changed him from a slave owning colonial planter from the late 1700s New Orleans to a closeted gay black man from the 1910s New Orleans in part I/s1, and then still suggested he is the same unreliable narrator from the book and sprinkled all these clues to indicate that he's not presenting the real version of the events that transpired. It's like they wanted to go balls to the walls crazy and makes the tv series a Whole New Story, but then they still left all these clues around to suggest this version of Louis is still the same guy (whom i cannot fucking stomach) from the book. it's making me really fucking confused. Idk what world these people live in, but last I check, popular media isn't exactly swimming in positive representations of gay/bi black men. Personally it just doesn't look like a good idea to racebent Louis so you can introduce clever little commentaries about race and gender to the narrative of IWTV and then still turns around and say "sike! this guy who claimed to be a victim of abuse is actually the abuser!!" as if it's a circus trick or whatever the fuck. Especially considering how airtight the narrative that show!Louis presented, there is literally no reason to doubt any important things he mentioned in the narrative he constructed. And yet, Book! Louis never even presented an airtight narrative, if not for the fact that the 1994 film rotted everybody's brains, everybody with sufficient reading comprehension skill can spot the contradictions and discrepancies in Book! Louis' narrative. So you are not mirroring how the story unfolded in the book anyways. Idk. these people think they are being clever but all I see is them playing with fire and is about to set the whole house on fire.
