ok let me crash out about this for a second

so a lot of sea of monsters is just written in a very uninspired and unvivid way and some of the worst moments are the ones that involve luke. one such example is during the luke/tyson/percy/annabeth confrontation scene on the ship where rick literally uses "said" like 4 times in a row for dialogue during moments where they should be yelling/impassioned/hurt/etc. annabeth is calling luke's actions disgusting and calling him insane and telling him to go to tartarus and rick keeps using "said" for these lines (som 112-113) and nothing else. not even with an adverb. why. normally I think writers stress too much about alternatives for said but this particular instance drives me crazy. there's no way annabeth's tone can be reduced to "said" here. the issue really isn't the lack of variety it's the fact that he's not charging enough emotion into these intensely emotional moments. and then there's this

hold on I'm losing it. sorry but I'm not giving him an "it's a kids book" pass here. obviously this is percy's pov and he can have some silly perspectives but this is such a serious and tension-filled scene. PEPPERONI? help 💀 like okay it's funny and I laughed but this humor is being misused. it's jarring and wildly tonally dissonant. no other moment in this chapter was adorned with such randomly insipid language. it completely took me out of the seriousness of what was happening and it WAS serious. this is a huge moment in luke's story - the first time we see him fully dressed in his villain role. he's not the friendly head counselor at camp anymore he's the head bitch in khakis who's going to destroy western civilization. it's the first time annabeth gets to confront him after what he did last summer. the first time he tries to justify himself to the person most hurt by his betrayal. percy is genuinely and explicitly scared in this scene. PEPPERONI? I needed to put the pdf down and go walk around my house after this. HIS FACE TURNED THE COLOR OF PEPPERONI? PLEASE be serious for one second. you're scaring the hoes with this bad figurative language. his face turned the color of fucking pepperoni? suddenly I've lost my ability to read. percy jackson I would give you winged shoes that drag you to tartarus too if you said my face turned the color of pepperoni during my cunty bad bitch villain moment. NO ONE is ordering pizza right now
