Love in the Big City Part 3 - Notes from a Reader (2)
Note 2: Enter Kylie
In part 3 of Love in the Big City Young finally introduces us to a character who, up until this point, we weren't aware had been present since the very first sentence: Kylie.
Kylie has been with Young since his military service, Kylie was with Young throughout his university years with Jae Hee, throughout his mothers 2 bouts of illness, throughout his relationship with Hyung, for five full years of his life.
And yet it is only now, in Part 3, that Young speaks her name.
And my question is why now?
Note 2.25: Perceptions of HIV in Korean Society
I touched briefly on the stigma and misinformation surrounding HIV in Korean society in this post here but I cannot stress enough how deep rooted those beliefs are:
"According to the 2015 national survey conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) regarding HIV/AIDS-related knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs, the words most frequently associated with AIDS include “incurable disease” and “death” (25.3%), followed by “fear,” “horror,” and “danger” (11.5%)."
("Factors Influencing Young Korean Men’s Knowledge and Stigmatizing Attitudes about HIV Infection", Shim and Kim)
People living with HIV in Korean society face being tested for HIV without their consent (most Korean companies require their employees undergo annual health screenings), their medical information being shared without their knowledge (the illegality of the data breach is not always a barrier), medical professionals refusing to perform procedures, losing their jobs or being denied job opportunities, and being cut off from their family and friends should they choose to disclose their diagnosis due to poor understanding of what HIV is and how it is transmitted.
In addition to the social stigma, it's also important to understand that many people living with HIV in Korea struggle with poor self-perception and internalised stigma. A study conducted in 2017 found that:
"75% of all respondents felt self-blame due to their HIV status at least once in the past 12 months. 64.4% stated having feelings of guilt, and 59.6% reported having low self-esteem. 26.9 % also agreed with the statement “I had the feeling I should be punished”. [...] Only 13.5% stated that they experienced no negative feelings in connection with their HIV status in the past 12 months."
("Unknown Lives: Initial Findings from the People Living with HIV Stigma Index in South Korea 2016-2017")
Surrounded by so much stigma and misinformation as they are, it is unsurprising that disclosure rates amongst Koreans are lower than in many other countries ("Predictors Associated With HIV Status Non-Disclosure in Korea", Kim and Woo) and that many chose not to share their diagnosis with any one but especially those closest to them (and especially ).
Note 2.5: Young and Kylie
Young's experience with Kylie closely maps on to the experiences of Korean PLHIV (People Living with HIV) discussed above.
Firstly, he is diagnosed with Kylie after being tested for it without his consent (p. 135) and lives with the fear of a repeat scenario, especially in relation to how such an infringement on his person would affect his ability to get a job (pp. 163-164 and again p. 176). In addition to this, he is exposed first hand (and quite possibly partook in prior to his own diagnosis) the social stigma that accompanies a known HIV diagnosis:
"When I drank with them, some guy rumoured to be poz passed by, our resident clown Eun-Jung would say, 'Everyone cover your glasses,' and we'd all burst out laughing." (p. 157)
(On a side note, in a study I can frustratingly no longer find it was observed that HIV stigma was not much lower amongst the queer community in Korea than it was in any other cross section of society and this passage feels like a nod to how the lack of easily accessible information and long held misinformation has effectively barred queer Koreans with HIV from finding support amongst their own community.)
Finally, as blasé and as care-free as Young tries to sound about his diagnosis, there are definitely signs that he, like so many others, suffers with feelings of guilt, self-blame, and the belief that "[he] should be punished". Kylie is the reason he expects Gyu-Ho to walk away from him as soon as he discloses his diagnosis, Kylie is the reason he tells Gyu-Ho to sleep around in Japan and subsequently accepts things when he believes Gyu-Ho is continuing to do so once back in Korea, "Kylie is [his] burden to bare and [his] alone" (p. 166) even when Gyu-Ho is the one who willingly "potion[s] out [his] pills and water every morning" (p. 178) and obviously has no qualms about helping Young manage his illness.
Kylie is the reason Young lets Gyu-Ho go:
"Kylie.
I had wanted too much. I'd already been given so much in the past three years. When you try to have too much, you're bound to stumble at some point." (p. 176).
Note 2.75: Why Now?
Young's experience with Kylie is the mirror of many Korean PLHIV and this includes his reluctance to disclose his diagnosis to anyone. He doesn't tell his mother, he doesn't tell Hyung, he doesn't tell the T-aras, and he doesn't tell Jae Hee.
It's only natural that he wouldn't tell us, the reader, either.
It's none of our business.
This is his most closely guarded secret, his most vulnerable point, the spectre that looms over his life and threatens to take everything away if he puts a foot wrong or lets slip to the wrong person.
The only person in the story he shares Kylie's existence with (beyond his doctors) is Gyu-Ho and it is because Gyu-Ho knew and stayed and embraced him that we know.
So why now?
Because up until Gyu-Ho, Young probably didn't feel able to talk about Kylie to anyone, in anyway. Gyu-Ho's acceptance of his diagnosis and his refusal to let it scare him away changed that; it created a space in which Kylie could be talked about, not without fear (certainly not) but with the knowledge that he wouldn't be abandoned or judged or rejected, that he would be sympathised with and loved and supported.
"Because whatever it was or wasn't, you were you."

Film Friday: Bohemian Rhapsody
This week I want to try something a bit different. So far I've mostly written about movies I really like. Hidden gems, movies that are, if not 10/10s are for the most part good and clever and made by people who really care about making a good flick. Today, I'm going to talk about a movie that I don't like. I'm actually going so far as to say the movie pisses me off. I'm going to try to be fair and explain my reasoning because there are some interesting points as to why this thing sucks, and I don't want them to drown in the bile. So, let's talk about Bohemian Rhapsody.
For the uninitiated, Bohemian Rhapsody is the story of Freddy Mercury, lead vocalist in the British classic rock leviathan Queen. Born in Zanzibar and later immigrating to the UK, Mercury's truly stunning baritone tonal range and operatic songwriting sensibilities paired with his flamboyant and powerful stage presence made him and Queen an unstoppable force in the music scene up until his tragic death from AIDS in 1991.
Now, if you're thinking this is the kind of life story that the typical musician biopic yearns for if you could write a bit less of a bummer ending somehow, you'd be right. The screenwriter has solved this by climaxing the movie at the triumphant note of Queen's legendary Live Aid 1985 performance, where Freddy, by now aware of his HIV diagnosis, reunites with the band to pitch one for the angels and sing his heart out for a good cause.
So, to cover the good things first. The Live Aid recreation is some truly impressive stuff, best viewed on the biggest screen you can. The soundtrack is, of course, Banger City, although it's mostly the crowd-pleasing hits. Not a lot of Innuendo, Barcelona, or Brighton Rock on the soundtrack if you feel me, but I suppose there is something to be said for the mass appeal. I also like Rami Malek in the lead role. He plays Freddy with a vulnerability that feels very genuine, and although he doesn't quite reach the peaks of Stage God Grandure that ol' Freddy operated on, he does sell the simulacra reasonably well.
Now, onto the less good parts. Now when I say Freddy's story fits the musician biopic, that isn't necessarily strictly a compliment. The by now well-worn ruts of "Rise To Stardom but Oh No Being Famous Kinda Sucks And Is Bad For You Actually but You Get Together With The Band Again and Rock Out Because That Is The Most Important Thing" is the kind of thing even a causal watcher of the subgenre can dictate in their sleep. Being a bit formulaic isn't strictly wrong of course, but it does feel a bit disrespectful when applied to the life of an actual real person.
Of course, I say that, but for being a film about Freddy Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody doesn't actually feel like that as much as it feels like a movie about the band members of Queen's perception of the guy. Now I say this in part because Freddy's interactions with the LGBTQ community (more on this later) feel a bit told from an outside perspective, as the filmmakers have chosen to tell this slice of the story as the poor lad's downward spiral. Freddy's in a bad place and he goes to gay clubs and truck stops and whatnot. Like, considering what ended up killing the man I can see where that came from, but it also feels like a flattening. Freddy didn't hang out in gay bars to die from aids, one assumes, and the fact that Freddy's soon-to-be shitbag ex looms in the background of several scenes dressed and lit like a villain on Star Trek does not help.
The reason why I say this really is "Freddy as understood by Queen" is because of what I have to assume is historical revisionism going on. Our protagonist does bicker with his bandmates, and he's late for rehearsal, and it does come up of course, but the rest of the band is just so goddamn reasonable. Yeah, he's a flake and he's out there partying all night with those scary gays (not that there's anything wrong with that) but y'know, he's Freddy, he's a bit of a tosser but he's a good lad. Nobody loses their temper with him, nobody says an ill word about this obviously spiraling man, and if anyone does bring anything up it is in the gentlest, most understanding tones you've ever heard. While that isn't bad in itself, it does feel highly suspicious, especially when you take into account that bar Freddy, all of Queen's original lineup is still alive and was, in fact, involved in producing the movie. Honestly, if they had owned this perspective a bit and made Freddy this Jesus Christ in Spartacus-esque figure, too large to be contained on film alone, that would be neat, but no, it's a tell-all story told by people who at the best have a fraction of the story.
This isn't the film's biggest sin in my eyes though, no, it isn't even the atrocious editing although yes it does break several core tenets of good editing for no discernable reason. No, the most atrocious thing this movie does in my opinion comes down to one particular scene in Act 2. Here, Freddy has a heart-to-heart with his long-time friend and, in the actual man's own words, "common-law wife," Mary Austin. In a moment of melancholy Freddy confesses to Mary that he is Bisexual, to which she responds "Freddie, you're gay" and in essence cuts the conversation and the relationship right there. Now this isn't outrageous in itself, people have assumed that bisexual men are just gays in disguise up until very recently. What is somewhat unforgivable though is that this statement, and Mary's followup on it is literally the last words on Mercury's sexuality.
Now, the exact thats and whiches of Mercury's sexuality are a bit murky to my understanding, so this could be an attempt at hedging their bets in that regard. That said it is just incredibly disrespectful to let someone else than the character in question have the last word on anyone's sexuality, fictional or not.
Now I can see what the filmmakers were going for here. "You're lying to yourself and me when you say that you love me (in a way that we both find meaningful)" can be a place where a relationship ends, and it's an appropriately grim one for the start of a downward spiral. That said, it's hard not to read this as "This FAIRY thinks he can trick us into thinking he's BISEXUAL but he's LYING because he's GAY and then he gets SAD and has DANGEROUS GAY SEX about it."
It's a whole mess of a scene, and even without all the other issues, it soured the entire experience for me. This wasn't the story of a musical genius with a complicated relationship with his own sexuality and the degree to which he was public with that sexuality in a time when that kind of openness was sought with destructive intent. This is the story of a musical genius whose understanding friends and bandmates love and support despite being a silly little gay. This is celebrating the works of a man despite the inner life he led that fueled those works, not because of it. I wouldn't call this movie explicitly hateful exactly, but it's so thoroughly saturated with what esteemed philosopher and playwright Abigail Thorn calls "yer da'-thinking" that it'd honestly be better if it just called Freddy a slur and got it over with.
To pull back from that frothingly rage-filled abyss for a second, it is perhaps too much to expect even a biopic to even-handedly handle its subject matter. After all, when making a movie about someone dead, all you have is whatever they left behind and the perspectives of the people who survived them. Adapting anything also requires some changes made, if nothing else because setting a start and an end to a story changes the story even as it creates it. That said, this isn't an excuse to remix historical events to your liking. Live Aid 1985 did not struggle until Queen turned the tide, it was a highly successful event in which a very famous band did one of the best rock performances of all time, to name one example.
So in short: I don't like Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) very much. The song is still a banger though.

Disseminated Gonorrhoea
On the theme of disseminated infectious diseases. I've no idea why I've stuck with this theme. Maybe it was catchy.
Going with the topic of infectious diseases does make it easier to source from free resources.
Image from NEJM:
Basically, disseminated gono presents as fever, reactive arthritis (any arthritis that results from infection), tenosynovitis (inflamed tendons as well as joints) and rash. But use your epidemiology to consider this diagnosis - usually young people with relatively few comorbidities and are they sexually active. Usually. But use your judgement. The simplest thing is getting their consent to rule this out, given the extremes of complications of STIs. I've yet to ever see an ID physician ever squeamish about taking a sexual history because of how important this is. (Phrasing it this way as it's critical to be sensitive and compassionate - but I often find junior doctors over do this to the point where it's awkward for both them and the patient).
Patient in the image was in her 20s, presented with fevers, rash (pustular too) and a painful 3rd digit (tenosynovitis). A cervical swab/culture was positive for Neisseria gonorrhoea.
Investigations: Gram staining gives you pink cocci, or gram negative cocci - which are intracellular
Kinda easier to remember it's neisseria species, given most cocci are gram positives (staph and streps) and most gram negative bacteria are rods or bacilli (eg Ecoli).
First line investigation, however is the swab of affected or exposed areas for PCR or NAAT (Nucleic acid amplifcation testing) and culture.
Complications in severe disease: Pelvic inflammatory disease and abscess, which can require surgery and drainage and at worst, infertility. Epididymo-orchitis.. I spelt it wrong, I know, but essentially it's painful testicles, ddx with testicular torsion. Rarely: meningitis, conjunctivitis and prostatitis.
Cause for joints being affected - unclear, but mech is due to immune complexes. So, think septic joint (fevers/acute, red hot joint and rash) and on draining the joint, expect a negative gram stain. It's an inflammatory reaction.
Long term - can develop inflammatory arthritis, e.g. long term arthritis and joint pain/disability, requiring rheumatology input and immunosuppression.
In most cases, gono is asymptomatic. Vaginal 80% and penile up to 90%. Hence the importance of routine screening. There is also higher risk of dissemianted gono in HIV patients.
Treatment: IM Ceftriaxone 1-2 g in severe disease and PO Azithromycin typically for chlamydia as they frequently are found together. 90% of chlamydia cases are asymptomatic.
Follow-up and contact tracing: No sexual contact for 7 days and no contact with partners from the last 2 months until screened and/or treated. Contact tracing key, i.e. partners within the last 2 months. Prior infection offers no immunity, so it's possible to get reinfected. Re test in 2 weeks for cure and in 3 months for re-infection.
Screen for other STIs (chlamydia - or assume it's there and treat), HIV and Syphilis.
Special group: pregnancy, which can threaten the pregnancy itself, cause other complications during and more memorable during med school - cause infant gono bacterial conjunctivitis during vaginal delivery. So widely, pregnant women are screened at perinatal clinic.
resources: the gold standard with Australian ID physicians: Australian STI Guidelines which are free.

Why Early Diagnosis and the Right Treatment Are Key for Chlamydia
Chlamydia is one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted infections (STIs) globally, and its impact on public health cannot be overstated. The infection, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, often goes unnoticed due to its asymptomatic nature in many individuals. This lack of symptoms can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, resulting in serious health complications. Understanding the significance of early diagnosis and the best treatment for chlamydia is essential for effective management and prevention of long-term consequences.
The Dangers of Delayed Diagnosis
One of the most pressing concerns associated with chlamydia is that many individuals remain unaware of their infection. Studies have shown that nearly 70% of women and 50% of men do not exhibit noticeable symptoms, which can lead to a false sense of security. When left untreated, chlamydia can result in severe health issues, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, which can cause infertility and chronic pelvic pain. In men, untreated chlamydia can lead to epididymitis, a painful condition that can also affect fertility.
Moreover, undiagnosed chlamydia increases the risk of contracting other STIs, including HIV. The inflammation caused by chlamydia can create a more favorable environment for the transmission of other infections. Thus, early diagnosis is crucial in breaking this cycle of infection and preventing further complications. Regular screenings are vital, especially for sexually active individuals under the age of 25, as they are at a higher risk of contracting STIs.
The Process of Diagnosis
Diagnosing chlamydia typically involves a simple and painless test. Healthcare providers may use urine samples or swabs from potential infection sites, such as the cervix in women or the urethra in men. The results are usually available within a few days, allowing for timely intervention.
In Ireland, public health initiatives have made it easier for individuals to access testing services. Many healthcare providers offer confidential and non-judgmental testing, encouraging individuals to take charge of their sexual health. Mobile clinics and community health services have also been established to reach those who may feel uncomfortable seeking help through traditional routes. This accessibility is paramount in promoting early diagnosis and reducing the stigma associated with STIs.
The Best Treatment for Chlamydia
Once diagnosed, the best treatment for chlamydia is a course of antibiotics. The most commonly prescribed medications include azithromycin and doxycycline, which have been proven effective in eliminating the infection. Patients are typically advised to complete the entire course of antibiotics, even if symptoms subside before finishing the medication. This adherence to treatment is vital to ensure that the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance.
In addition to medication, healthcare providers often recommend follow-up appointments to confirm that the infection has been successfully treated. A follow-up test is particularly important for women, as they are at an increased risk of developing complications from untreated chlamydia. Furthermore, sexual partners should also be informed and tested, as chlamydia is highly transmissible. This partner notification is a critical step in the treatment process, ensuring that the infection does not persist or spread further.
The Role of Education and Awareness
Education plays a significant role in the fight against chlamydia. Public health campaigns and initiatives aimed at increasing awareness about STIs are crucial in promoting healthy behaviors and encouraging individuals to seek testing. By providing accurate information about the risks, symptoms, and treatment options, individuals are empowered to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
Schools, community organizations, and healthcare providers are instrumental in disseminating information about chlamydia and other STIs. Workshops, seminars, and informational materials can help reduce the stigma associated with STIs and foster a culture of openness regarding sexual health. By normalizing discussions about STIs, individuals may feel more inclined to seek help and undergo regular screenings.
Living with Chlamydia: Moving Forward
Receiving a diagnosis of chlamydia can be overwhelming, but it is essential to remember that effective treatment is available. After completing the prescribed antibiotic course, individuals are encouraged to abstain from sexual activity until they have been cleared of the infection. This precaution not only protects one's health but also safeguards the health of partners.
Additionally, individuals should engage in ongoing conversations with their healthcare providers about their sexual health. Regular check-ups and open dialogues can help prevent future infections and promote a proactive approach to sexual health. Individuals are also encouraged to adopt safe sex practices, such as using condoms, to reduce the risk of contracting STIs.
Conclusion
In summary, understanding the importance of early diagnosis and the best treatment for chlamydia is vital for effective management of this common infection. Timely intervention can prevent serious health complications and contribute to a healthier community overall. For individuals seeking assistance with their sexual health, EIR DOC offers valuable services, providing professional guidance and treatment options tailored to individual needs. By prioritizing sexual health and seeking help when necessary, individuals can take control of their health and contribute to the broader effort to reduce chlamydia rates and promote overall well-being.

Understanding the Underlying Factors of Unintentional Weight Loss
Unintentional weight loss may be of concern and usually points to existing medical disorders. Even though some may at first perceive it in a positive light, looking into the reasons for this shift is essential. Medical assessments reveal that nearly 72% of people experiencing weight loss without a known reason have an underlying condition, meaning it’s important to reach out to a healthcare provider. Definition of Unintentional Weight Loss Unintentional weight loss is a condition in which an individual loses weight without their will. This can happen with a weight loss of 5% or more in a period of 6 months to one year. For example, a 200-pound man would weigh 190 pounds after a 10-pound loss while a 130-pound woman would weigh 123 pounds after 6-7 pounds lost. Weight loss in such a manner is not an outcome of any deliberate steps such as dieting or exercising more. When to Seek Medical Attention Consult a healthcare provider if you experience a 5% to 10% weight loss without intention. Blue Waffle Disease
Debunking Blue Waffle Disease: Myths, Facts, and STI Prevention
The Blue Waffle Disease hoax emphasizes the need for reliable sexual health information. By understanding real STIs and practicing preventive measures, we can dispel myths and promote better health outcomes. If you experience any symptoms or concerns, consult a healthcare provider for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
What Is Blue Waffle Disease?
Blue Waffle Disease is an internet hoax, falsely described as a severe genital condition causing blue discoloration and lesions. Despite its viral spread on platforms like Reddit and Twitter, medical experts and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirm that Blue Waffle Disease is not real. This myth has misled many, highlighting the need for accurate sexual health information.
The Origins and Spread of the Blue Waffle Hoax
The Blue Waffle Disease myth originated around 2010 as an internet prank that quickly went viral. The hoax claimed that this fictitious STI turned the vaginal area blue and caused severe symptoms like lesions and discharge. The spread of this misinformation was fueled by doctored images and sensationalist claims. Despite being debunked by medical professionals, the myth persists, highlighting the dangers of internet misinformation and the importance of accessing reliable health information.
Symptoms Similar to Other STIs
The supposed symptoms of Blue Waffle Disease mimic those of real sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Recognizing these symptoms can lead to appropriate treatment:
- Genital Herpes: Painful blisters and sores, managed with antiviral medications (CDC, Genital Herpes).
- Vaginal Candidiasis: Itching, redness, and white discharge, treated with antifungal medications (CDC, Vaginal Candidiasis).
- Bacterial Vaginosis: Discharge, odor, and discomfort, treated with antibiotics (Workowski et al., 2021).
- Trichomoniasis: Itching, burning, and foul-smelling discharge, treated with antiprotozoal medication (Garcia et al., 2023).
Common STIs and Their Symptoms
While Blue Waffle Disease is not real, several actual STIs exhibit symptoms that can cause confusion. Understanding these can help individuals seek appropriate medical care:
- Chlamydia: Often asymptomatic, but can cause vaginal discharge, pain during urination, and lower abdominal pain. Left untreated, it can lead to serious reproductive issues.
- Gonorrhea: Symptoms include burning during urination, increased vaginal discharge, and bleeding between periods. Both men and women can contract it, affecting the genitals, rectum, and throat.
- Genital Herpes: Caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), symptoms include painful blisters, sores, and vaginal discharge. The virus remains in the body and can reactivate.
- Human Papillomavirus (HPV): This common STI can cause genital warts and is associated with various cancers, such as cervical and throat cancer. Vaccination is available to prevent certain high-risk strains.
How To Prevent STIs
Preventing STIs involves a combination of safe sexual practices, regular testing, and proper hygiene. Essential strategies include:
- Use Protection: Condoms significantly reduce STI transmission (CDC, Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention).
- Regular Testing: Routine screenings detect STIs early, enabling timely treatment (Workowski et al., 2021).
- Communication: Discuss STI status and safe sex practices with partners.
- Vaccination: Vaccines like HPV can prevent certain STIs (CDC, Sexually Transmitted Diseases Prevention).
The Importance of STI Testing
Regular STI testing is crucial for maintaining sexual health. Tests can include urine samples, blood tests, or swabs. The CDC advises regular screenings for STIs such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV, especially for those with new or multiple partners (Workowski et al., 2021).
Dispelling Myths and Emphasizing Education
The persistence of the Blue Waffle Disease myth underscores the necessity of comprehensive sex education. Misinformation can lead to unnecessary panic and stigmatization. Reliable sources, such as the CDC and Planned Parenthood, provide accurate information on sexual health, STI prevention, and treatment. Educating young people through school programs and public health campaigns is crucial to combatting myths and promoting healthy sexual behaviors.
Practical Steps for STI Prevention
Preventing STIs involves adopting safer sex practices and being informed about your sexual health:
- Consistent Condom Use: Condoms and dental dams are effective barriers against STIs during vaginal, anal, and oral sex.
- Regular Screenings: Routine STI testing is vital, especially for sexually active individuals with multiple partners. Early detection leads to timely treatment.
- Open Communication: Discussing STI status and sexual health with partners fosters trust and reduces the risk of transmission.
- Vaccinations: Vaccines, such as those for HPV and hepatitis B, are critical tools in preventing certain STIs.
Addressing Common Questions
What is Blue Waffle Disease?
Blue Waffle Disease is a fictional condition, created as an internet hoax, and is not recognized by medical professionals.
What does Blue Waffle Disease look like?
There are no legitimate medical cases or images of Blue Waffle Disease as it does not exist. Photos circulating online are either altered or misrepresent other conditions.
What does Blue Waffle mean?
"Blue Waffle" is a slang term that has no basis in medical reality. It is part of the misinformation spread through internet hoaxes.
Conclusion
The Blue Waffle Disease hoax is a clear example of how misinformation can spread and create unnecessary fear. By focusing on real STIs, their symptoms, and prevention methods, we can promote a better understanding of sexual health. Ensuring access to accurate information and encouraging responsible sexual practices are key to preventing the spread of STIs and debunking harmful myths.

How to avoid tuberculosis?
Avoiding tuberculosis (TB) involves adopting preventive measures to reduce the risk of exposure to the bacteria that cause the disease (Mycobacterium tuberculosis). Here are some effective strategies to avoid TB:
Vaccination: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine is widely used to prevent severe forms of TB in areas where the disease is prevalent. While it may not fully prevent TB infection, it can reduce the risk of developing severe forms of the disease, such as TB meningitis and disseminated TB in children.
Avoid Close Contact with Infected Individuals: TB is primarily spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Minimize close contact with individuals known to have active TB until they have been treated and are no longer infectious.
Good Ventilation: TB bacteria thrive in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. Ensure adequate ventilation in living and working spaces by opening windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate.
Personal Hygiene: Practicing good hygiene habits, such as covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and promptly disposing of used tissues, can help prevent the spread of TB bacteria.
Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a strong immune system through a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and managing stress can help reduce the risk of TB infection and its progression to active disease.
Screening and Testing: Individuals at high risk of TB infection, such as healthcare workers, those living in crowded or congregate settings, and individuals with HIV/AIDS or other immunocompromising conditions, should undergo regular TB screening and testing. Early detection allows for prompt treatment and reduces the risk of transmission to others.
Treatment of Latent TB Infection: If you have been exposed to TB but do not have active disease, your doctor may recommend treatment for latent TB infection (LTBI) to prevent the development of active TB in the future. Treatment typically involves taking antibiotics for several months under medical supervision.
Education and Awareness: Educate yourself and others about TB transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures. Raise awareness in your community about the importance of TB prevention and treatment to reduce stigma and encourage early diagnosis and treatment.
By implementing these preventive measures, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of contracting TB and contribute to global efforts to control and eliminate this infectious disease.
