Loving you is a losing game

Marc Spector x fem! reader (Steven and Jake are mentioned briefly)

Summary: Marc meeting you was one of the best things to have happen to him. However, the demons of his past make him feel otherwise. You help him see that the love you share is one that should be fought for.

A/N: This is what I thought while listening to the song Arcade by Duncan Laurence. Of course with a happier twist.

A/N 2: Purely for entertainment purposes, so please don’t come after me. As I said, I'm still getting used to writing pieces like this.

Marc Spector’s life has never been easy. From the trauma of his young brother’s death to everything he’s during his time as Khonshu’s avatar, he’s felt like a ticking time bomb. Though he’s tried to use his time as Moon Knight to right his wrongs, it never feels like it’s enough.

When he meets you, he begins to see that there is more to life than vengeance. Marc begins to let himself enjoy your presence when he and you hit it off at the gym.

You weren’t a gym rat by any means but you had started a membership in the hopes of getting in shape and learning self-defense by using their punching bag. Seeing you hit the bag by yourself catches his attention and he begins to give you some pointers on how to improve your stance. Over time, this leads to you becoming sparring partners and eventually exchanging phone numbers. Although,this leads to you all regularly hanging out outside your sparring hours.

The day he asked you out was a shock for him because not only did he actually let himself be brave enough to ask the question but you eagerly accepted his invitation. It’s even more surprising to find out that one date led to another. Then another until you both have officially unofficially started dating.

Despite everything going well, he knew that there were things he needed to tell you. About his DID. His past. Being the avatar to an Egyptian deity in exchange to right the wrongs from his ugly past.

This then leads him to begin feeling self conscious about himself. His inner dialogue begins to consist of questions such as: What if he didn’t deserve this chance at happiness? What if she thinks I’m crazy or thinks I’m making this up?

Marc then begins to hear his mother’s voice. Telling him that he is unworthy of receiving love and will only continue to destroy all the lives that he surrounds himself with. Steven and Jake try to snap him out of this but Marc is paralyzed. At this moment, Marc only thinks one thing.

“I have to break up with her before I hurt her”, Marc thought.

“Marc, this isn’t funny. Stop joking, you say.

“I’m not joking. I think we should break up,” said Marc.

“But why, Marc? Did I do something wrong?”

“Of course, you didn’t. You’ve been the best thing to have ever happened to me.”

“Then why are you doing this?” You take your hand in his, looking at him sadly. “Please, tell me why you’re acting as if I’m a disease.”

“Imthedisease.” He says as if he’s trying to rip off a bandage.

“What, baby?”

“I said, I'm the disease. I seep into innocent lives and destroy them.” He looks at you tearfully.

“Marc, that’s silly. What are you talking about?”

Marc then begins to explain everything. From the death of his younger brother to the lives he took during his time as a mercenary. He also makes sure to mention that he is the vigilante, Moon Knight, and has two other individuals living within his head. He concludes all of this by saying, “Loving me is a losing game.”

Once he’s done explaining all of this, Marc is waiting to see your reaction to all this. Will you call him crazy? Run away from him? Scream?

Instead, you take his hands in your own.

“Loving you isn’t a losing game, Marc,” you tell him. I love you and long as we have each other, we can face whatever life throws at us.”

At this, Marc pulls you into a big hug. He lets himself break down because he knows that you’re here to stay and love him. For his strengths and weaknesses, through good and bad times. He knows you will be there for him.

As you two are still embracing, he starts to believe that he is worth loving after all.

Summary: Jake tries to get back with you after leaving you due to his lack of commitment. But when he finally comes back and tries to start again with his new commitment. He's found that someone's beat him to it.

Warnings: angst, one that got away trope, Jake being a huge dick, the canon is never mentioned at all. 

Author’s Snip: I've tried to write this three seprite times and I was going to get this out damnit. I feel like this might be shit but I don't even care. Just eat your angst and go.

Notes: I'm tired so this is not proof read, I'll do it some other time. Also, Jake is a stand alone in this so there's no mention of Steven or Marc here. There is no mention of the canon in the show so interpret that how you please.

A year and a half was the mark that Jake managed to make. That doesn't sound like much, and maybe that's what made it sound so sad. It was a wonderful year and a half. You were really something. Jake couldn't deny that no matter how hard he tried. To say that you didn't mean something to him was like saying that the sun doesn't mean anything to the earth.

Jake wasn't trying to be cruel to you. If he could he'd take back everything he did and said that night. Every word of it. After all, you had only wanted to take the next reasonable step in your relationship.

"I can't do this." he said, almost in an apathetic tone that implied that this was a normal sentence.

You look shattered upon hearing those words, and the broken little "What?" that came out of you was almost inaudible. Something that haunts him to this day.

"I can't do this. This whole idea that you have." Jake responded plainly. "Listen, I'm sorry but I don't do the whole house thing." he remarked.

"What is that supposed to mean?" you ask with your voice starting to sound upset. He doesn't know how he managed to keep himself together and so straight faced when you were clearly starting to tear up. "I don't play house. I don't settle." he said.

"So... what?" you croak as your throat starts to prepare for sobbing as you try to keep yourself together. And Jake just shrugs.

How could he? How dare he? You admit that you would like to try and save up to move into a nice little place with him and live together, to plant the seeds for a future with him, and he just shrugged at you as he shot it down. Like it was nothing.

"Well, what if I want this What if you just gave living together a try. We can rent a little apartment and see how it feels. Please." you pleaded. You were still trying not keep a brave face but your voice was getting sad and broken. And like some idiot he shook his head. "I'm sorry, but I just don't do that." he said. He didn't sound that sorry, he can see that now.

You stood there for a moment till you just nodded, accepting what he said, swallowing a sob like a bitter pill that you had no choice but to take. That's when you walked away.

Jake did feel bad but he thought that maybe you would come around and take a step back and maybe think that he wasn't ready for that.

Of course, you didn't. Jake really doesn't know what the hell he was thinking when he thought that you would just cry it out and come back. It was no surprise that you didn't call him back after that and he figured that you weren't coming back.

That's when he actually started to hurt him. It had been a few months and he knew just how much he fucked up so he just left it. He thought that trying to talk would hurt more so he just settled with the pain of what he did instead of settling with what should have been you.

He honestly doesn't know what he was thinking when he decided that years after all that to just try and come back. Like a bouquet and "I'm sorry. Let's try this again." with puppy dog eyes would fix a serious blow like that.

When he went to what he remembered being your place to which there was someone else living there should have been his first sign. The old lady was actually someone who knew you before hand, somehow, something about some mail going to the old address or something, and was kind enough to tell him where you lived now.

The new address leading to a nice little house should have been his second and final sign but he was blinded by the hope that he somehow managed to make up in his head.

When the door opened to you after he knocked Jake almost breathed a sigh of relief but the look on your face made him keep it in.You almost had this surprised and mortified look on your face. Which was valid, you didn't tell him where you lived after moving and he just managed to find you. His best guess as to why you did tell him to leave was because you knew that he was no harm. But you still didn't look too pleased to see him.

Jake realized that he didn't actually have anything planned to say. He had the drive to your old place and your new home to think of something to give to you as to explain everything and try to win you back. Unlike him on the night he broke your hope in settling down with him, he had nothing to say.

"I..." he managed to speak out before losing his track of thought again.

He wouldn't be able to finish that sentence since a voice from inside the house was heard. "Honey? Is something wrong?" a man's voice calls out. "Yeah just..." you turn around and call back before looking back at Jake.

He knew that this was an answer to anything he could come up with but he couldn't even fully process it fully before you called out to the voice inside the house again. "It's just someone asking for directions." you say before just closing the door of him.

It serves him well, he supposes.

That he'd only try suggest that you come back to him only for you to shoot him down in a similar fashion.

You'd manage to find someone else who was willing to 'play house' with you.

Marceline & Bubblegum Kiss

This post is about the series final, a long-awaited and desperately hoped for scene from many fans! It took 10 seasons of Adventure Time for this scene to finally occur. This was celebrated by many of the show’s viewers! Especially the LGBTQ+ fans! This scene is as iconic as it is queer! It was greatly appreciated from the fans.

Marceline and Bubblegum’s relationship was never perceived as a friendship. The show continuously implied that there was always a romantic relationship as it was hinted off several times in past episodes. In one of the first episodes of Adventure Time, when Jake wanted to ask Bubblegum out on a date, he initially asked Marceline for advice on the date. And as soon as they see each other, they greet, and Marceline calls her by her first name “Bonnibel”, and as the show progresses we then realize that Marceline is one of the very few people who can call her by her first name.

Then Marceline sang “I'm Just Your Problem” that unleashed many fan ships. This scene even gave Marceline and Bubblegum their very own queer ship name, “Bubbline”, which is Bubblegum and Marceline combined. (from Culture website)

There was another episode that greatly implied that their relationship was a lot more than a platonic friendship between Marceline and Bubblegum. In the episode “Broke His Crown”, throughout the episode it is truly and purposely implied that they are on a date. As they are both dressed up, and they even hold hands in some scenes. ( shared in website “them.”) Bubblegum and Marceline could not have been just friends through all of this. It was greatly speculated that the writers of the show were leading up to something everyone had been longing for many episodes of the famous cartoon.

When the finale episode launched, fans finally got what they dreamed of for years! Marceline and Bubblegum kissed! The cartoon’s fans were over the moon about this. A fan soon tweeted “Straights have “to all the boys i’ve loved before”, gays have “Love, Simon” and now lesbians have Princess Bubblegum and Marceline kissing.” ( tweeted by fan @whoislales). The excitement and appreciation from the famous American Cartoon Adventure Time was shown all over social media.

Personally, as an LGBTQ member, I found this episode stunning. I thought the same thing as many other viewers, “we finally got the episode we longed for so long.” It was beautifully written and a perfected queer love story. The creator of the cartoon (shared in an interview with writers) shared that Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe) was given the assignment to continue with vampire queen Marceline and Bubblegum’s love story. She shared that their relationship was not originally planned as part of the show, but that it had “evolved” throughout the show. Giving the perfect suspense and curiosity towards the audience.

Adam Muto said that the kiss was the perfect ending for Marceline and Bubblegum, “There’s enough to draw a conclusion. I don’t want to lay out their entire future” (said during an interview in 2018.)

Overall, their story was epic and allowed people to see in an American Cartoon the love story of two women.

Playlist: 54. The Beginning

Since this is a book with six narrators who have six very different stories—and diverge into six different directions as the war ends—Cates and I ended up picking a song for each of the main characters to sum up what happens to them throughout this book.  

Rachel: “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand

“I’m just a cross hair I’m just a shot, then we can die I know I won’t be leaving here with you I say don’t you know You say you don’t know I say, take me out!”

I was still not completely morphed when someone shrieked. “Animorph!”

After all these years of the Yeerks thinking we were Andalites, always yelling “Andalite!” whenever they saw a morph. It was strangely gratifying that at last they knew who we were.

I said, <That’s right, genius: Animorph.>

I did what I do better than anyone. What Jake counted on me to do.

I attacked.

This song has two meanings: one is a guy on a date with a girl, the other is the assassin who killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand acknowledging that he (the assassin) is going to die but stepping up and doing what he believes needs to be done anyways. Rachel’s final battle is so perfect, and this song seemed to fit because it’s basically a warrior saying ‘Come at me, bro. Neither of us is walking out of here alive.’

Jake: “See You Again” by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth 

“How can we not talk about family when family’s all that we got? Everything I went through you were standing there by my side And now you gon’ be with me for the last ride It’s been a long day without you, my friend And I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again We’ve come a long way from where we began Oh, I’ll tell you all about it when I see you again”

"So what do we call her?" Marco wondered.

<She's beautiful,> Tobias said. <She's beautiful and dangerous and exciting.>

I turned in surprise to look at Tobias. He stared back at me with his eternally fierce hawk's gaze.

Marco laughed, realizing what we were thinking. "She would love it. A scary, deadly, cool- looking Yeerk ship on a doomed, suicidal, crazy mission that no one can ever know about? She would love it."

So it was that we went aboard the Rachel.

This song BREAKS MY HEART. It’s so subtle in its grief and longing for someone who’s died too young. The other thing that strikes me in this song is the sense of history between the singers and the person they’re addressing. A sort of self-deprecating, self-congratulatory, holy-shit-look-how-far-we’ve-come. This song makes me think so strongly of Jake and Rachel’s relationship, especially how Jake thinks of Rachel after her death.

Marco: “Us” by Regina Spektor

“They made a statue of us And put it on a mountain top Now tourists come and stare at us The sculptor's marble sends regards... Our noses have begun to rust We're living in a den of thieves Rummaging for answers in the pages”

My career was going pretty well. I was past the point of being a fad, anyway. I'd done seven appearances total on Letterman and Leno, plus several times each on Jon Stewart and Conan….

I got a gig as ‘technical advisor’ to a Spielberg movie about us. Animorph. Come on, you gotta love that. I did all the shows to plug that deal. Sample dialog: ‘I loved working with Steven, he is absolutely devoted to accuracy, and I knew he was the man who could be trusted with our story.’

This song is all about amusement at one’s own legacy—and especially the sense that it has been blown out of proportion—but also about new uncertainty in light of the old stories being so oversimplified.  Marco is pretty much the only one to embrace the Animorphs’ legacy after the war ends, but when Jake later says that Marco was “bored to tears” in that life, Marco agrees.

Tobias: “Possession” by Sarah McLachlan 

“Through this world I’ve stumbled So many times betrayed Trying to find an honest word To find the truth enslaved Oh, you speak to me in riddles and You speak to me in rhymes My body aches to breathe your breath, Your words keep me alive”

I knew why Jake had sent Rachel to Tom. I agreed with his thinking. But then, I wasn't in love with Rachel. I wasn't some lonely kid trapped in a hawk's body, half in one world, half in another with only Rachel's love tying me to my humanity.

Maybe Tobias would eventually accept what Jake did. Maybe not.

I gotta be honest: I hate Tobias’s fate in the last book. I think it sells him and his friends short to imply that he has no reason to connect to humanity once Rachel dies, and to suggest that he just survives day to day but doesn’t really live. That being said, I think this song captures perfectly the idea of being haunted by a loved one who’s no longer there and feeling like you can’t live without them beside you. It’s sad, but it’s also bitter.

Ax: “Leave My Body” by Florence and the Machine 

“And I don't need the birds, let them fly away And I don't want the clouds, they never seem to stay I don't want no future, I don't need no past One bright moment is all I ask”

This sort of mission wasn't supposed to be performed by me. The captain generally stays on the bridge. The T.O. normally led boarding parties. But I was bored. And I knew the T.O. wouldn't argue: I wasn't just the captain or a prince, I was Aximili of Earth. The Aximili. A living legend.

I couldn't complain about being bored, of course… The Intrepid was just about the only ship out ‘looking for trouble,’ as Marco might have put it.

This song is about dying for glory, of course, and I originally jotted it down as having to do with Rachel.  The thing is that, although people don’t comment on it nearly as often, Ax has just as much of a thirst for battle as Rachel does.  He survives the war, at first anyway, but then he gets himself and most of his crew killed because he’s “bored” and so goes charging into an unknown situation aboard the Blade ship hoping for battle.  

Cassie: “White Houses” by Vanessa Carlton

“Crashed on the floor when I moved in This little bungalow with some strange new friends Stay up too late, and I’m too thin We promise each other it’s til the end Now we’re spinning empty bottles It’s the five of us With pretty-eyed boys girls die to trust... I’m gone as the day is fading on white houses I lie, put my injuries all in the dust In my heart it’s the five of us In white houses”

Jake nodded. "Yeah. I know. But Ax was his friend. So are all of us, even if he doesn't want it that way. So tell me how to find him."

A few minutes later, after watching Jake morph and fly away, I climbed up to where Ronnie waited.

I knew I had said goodbye to Jake forever.

Cassie is the last surviving Animorph, and is therefore the keeper of their memories, stories, and histories. This is a song about first love, about intense friendships, about living in the moment, about being young and careless and reckless and passionate, and about looking back on one’s younger self with affection, embarrassment, and longing. As Gordie says in Stand By Me, “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”
