The Barren Moon - October 31st, 1996.
"The above photo, taken as the Apollo 17 astronauts orbited the Moon in 1972, depicts the stark lunar surface around the Eratosthenes and Copernicus craters. Many similar images of a Moon devoid of life are familiar to denizens of the space age. Contrary to this modern perception, life on the Moon was reported in August of 1835 in a series of sensational stories first published by the New York Sun - apparently intended to improve the paper's circulation. These descriptions of lunar life received broad credence and became one of the most spectacular hoaxes in history. Supposedly based on telescopic observations, the stories featured full, lavish accounts of a Moon with oceans and beaches, teeming with plant and animal life and climaxing with the report of sightings of groups of winged, furry, human-like creatures resembling bats! Within a month the hoax had been revealed but the newspaper continued to enjoy an increased readership. Though barren, the Moon remains a popular setting for science fiction stories and extra-terrestrial adventures."

Whatever hit Mimas nearly destroyed it. What remains is one of the largest impact craters on one of Saturn's smallest round moons. Analysis indicates that a slightly larger impact would have destroyed Mimas entirely. The huge crater, named Herschel after the 1789 discoverer of Mimas, Sir William Herschel, spans about 130 kilometers and is featured here. Mimas' low mass produces a surface gravity just strong enough to create a spherical body but weak enough to allow such relatively large surface features. Mimas is made of mostly water ice with a smattering of rock - so it is accurately described as a big dirty snowball. The featured image was taken during the closest-ever flyby of the robot spacecraft Cassini past Mimas in 2010 while in orbit around Saturn.
Below are actual photos taken

Mainstream geologists seem satisfied to attribute the origin of the Carolina Bays to thermokarst or to eolian and lacustrine mechanisms while ignoring the fact that the Carolina Bays and the Nebraska Rainwater basins have mathematically elliptical geometry and that their orientations converge by the Great Lakes, which are features associated with impact structures.

Any asteroid or meteor large enough to make an "impact crater" that large in proportion to Tethys would have also torn it apart on impact. Electrical discharge machining, on the other hand, can make large round craters with all the same features as craters typically accredited as "impact craters."

The Largest Impact Crater - September 6th, 1996.
"What is the largest known impact crater in the Solar System? Over 1300 miles across, the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the farside of the Earth's Moon holds that distinction. Circled above in a false colour mosaic of Clementine images, it was caused when an asteroid or comet-sized object crashed into the surface, penetrating the lunar mantle. In general, the rocky terrestrial planets and moons are scarred and battered from frequent repeated bombardment by large objects during our Solar System's early years. On Earth, continuous geological activity has hidden much of the damage, but the surface of the smaller, less active Moon bears testimony to a shared history of fierce and frequent impacts."

At long last, we have Old Moon as he appears in my TSAMS Celestial Phenomena AU. Mind the ratings.
The original Moon. Studious magician and talented inventor. Fearsome adversary and protector. King of scoffing with derision. Exquisitely clever. Habitually brusque. Unapologetic loner. Allergic to a good night's sleep. Unbridled, never-ending curiosity camouflaged with carefully cultivated nonchalance.
Casts a long shadow simply by virtue of absence. May discover that finding his footing in a family that's changed so much won't be as straightforward as simply showing up. Fears leaving Sun may have tested even his benevolent brother's unerring capacity for forgiveness.
Would walk into hell for Sunrise. Loves his twin without question. Left him anyway.
Celestial Phenomena is a series mostly from Solar's POV, detailing adventures and catastrophes from the light-hearted to peril and plot. Please enjoy.
