the harveston sledathon event: jade leech's "incantation"
i'm not sure if everyone has gotten to this part in the new english server event yet, but this part when they were at the market got me curious. so, in typical me fashion, i committed a day of research to figure out what the hell jade was talking about.
first i would like to say that this was put together with A DAYS WORTH OF RESEARCH so if you know more about these plants/mushrooms and would like to add information or correct me please do so in the replies!! i'm not an expert by any means LMAO
with that said, onto the first plant!! i will list the scientific name that jade uses first and then the common name in parentheses. each plant/mushroom will have a picture after the short description for reference!!
i got all these images from google obv
~~~~~
Urtica dioica (Stinging Nettle) - A perennial herb that grows best in moist areas. Grows in late fall to early spring. Fall sun, partial shade. Used as an herbal remedy for sore muscles and seasonal allergies.
Aegopodium podagraria (Ground Elder) - Marked as an invasive species in some of the eastern states of the US (Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Vermont, Michigan, and Wiscousin.) Thrives in moist soil and grows during the summer. It’s commonly used in soup and as a remedy for gouts.
Polypodiopsida (Ferns!!!) - Thrives in moist soil and grows near rivers and creeks. Grows in shady locations in early spring. They reproduce with spores. Fiddlehead ferns are the curled up fronds of a young fern that can be cooked and eaten in various ways (steamed, fried & stored, roasted, pickled, etc.) They can also be used as fertilizer and for landscaping.
Chamaenerion angustifolium (Fireweed) - A perennial herb that flowers in June to September. Grows in full sun to partial shade and moist, well drained soil. Its primary use is medicine but it’s also used in tea, which in turn can be used to treat migraines, infections, and colds. Young fireweed shoots can be cooked and eaten (apparently, they taste like asparagus and should be cooked like them, too.)
Allium ursinum (Wild Garlic or Cowleek) - Thrives in slightly acidic soil & moist conditions. Prefers shady conditions and grows around winter to spring, with a peak season of February to April. You can eat basically the whole plant, but if you eat the bulb the plant obviously won’t grow back. It’s been used as a medical plant and in cooking.
Sorbus (Mountain Ash or Rowan) - A bush that produces edible berries in late summer into early fall, and they stay on the tree into winter. The berries should not be eaten raw, but should be cooked because they contain parasorbic acid. The cooking process converts the parasorbic acid into a preservative sorbic acid. Their astringent taste is made sweeter by the frost. They grow best in full sun to partial shade and moist, well drained soil. They usually grow up to 15 meters tall.
Plantago major (Broadleaf Plantain) - A perennial herb that grows in late spring to summer (and sometimes in autumn.) They prefer moist soil but are very adaptable. Grows in moderate shade to full sun. The entire plant is edible, but apparently the flower shoots are especially delicious. They naturally grow in very dense populations and are easy to harvest. Works as a medicinal herb to treat inflammation and boost the immune system.
Equisetum arvense (Field horsetail) - Another perennial herb that grows from summer to the first frost. Grows in moist soil with full to partial sun. Can be used in tea and benefits the urinary system. Their root systems can grow as deep as six feet.
Craterellus tubaeformis (Winter mushroom, or funnel chanterelle) - Our first mushroom!! They are featured in a lot of recipes and are fairly common. They’re ready to harvest in mid-winter to mid-spring. They can be found in mossy areas with well decayed wood, and grow in loose clusters. They apparently have an earthy/fruity taste, and should be cooked so they don’t taste unbearably peppery.
Boletus edulis (Penny Bun) - Another mushroom with a dark brown cap. Spores grow more mushrooms in summer and autumn. Thrives in moist soil and can be harvested a few days after summer rain. They’re around 25cm tall on average and can weigh a kilo (which made me yell out loud, mind you. That's a big mushroom!!) They have a slightly nutty flavor.
Craterellus lutescens (Yellow Foot) - The last item on this list is another mushroom. It thrives in moist soil and they grow from 2-7 cm in length. They apparently have a peppery flavor when raw, but taste earthy when cooked. They typically grow around moss in loose clusters. They’re pretty similar to the craterellus tubaeformis, as one would expect from their shared genus, “craterellus.”
~~~~~
Overall Plant Conditions (AKA patterns I noticed while researching):
Practically all of these plants love moist & well drained soil. A lot of these plants grow in the summertime and like full/partial sun, but there’s a few exceptions of course. There’s a lot of herbs and perennial greenery that have medicinal properties. Many plants on this list grow well in disturbed soil or near water and roadways. All of them are edible (but beware of dangerous lookalikes!)
anyways < jade leech 3 i hope you found this somewhat interesting because i sure did!! (which is why i spent all my free time today researching it sigh the things i do for mermen)

I’ve been out foraging with a borrowed camera, so here’s some edible/medicinal plants you can forage for even in December (if you’re not snowed in).
Clover flowers, they’re edible and you can put them into meals and soups, but never eat a lot at once! They have a lot of estrogen so they can mess with your hormonal levels if you take a lot.
Daisies, they’re medicinal! You can eat them and make tea with them. You can eat both the flowers and the leaves.
This is how Yarrow looks in the winter; in the summer it grows tall with clusters of little white flowers, in the winter it’s very ground-level, but the leaves look just the same. It’s still edible and medicinal even when it’s just leaves, and you can add it to salads and soups.
Dead nettle, it’s good for immune system boost! It’s edible and can be made into teas, it doesn’t sting unlike the stinging nettle, and it grows pretty purple flowers. (I’ve never tried to eat it because the scent is so strong I’m lowkey scared of it)
Rosehips, they’re filled with vitamin C and good to make jam and tea out of. Also a great immune system boost.
Plantain, it has a nice nutty flavour to it, and it’s recommended as a plant to make your blood stronger. It’s also a medicinal plant that helps wound healing!
Dandelion greens are still up even when they’re not flowering! They’re so high in vitamin C, they could get you nourished thru the winter even they’re all you eat. They’re a bit acidic but if you add them to a potato or bean salad they hit just right.
Stinging nettle is still around, it will get smaller after the frost hits, but it’s still a great source of calcium, iron, energy, overall one of the best plants you could possibly add into your diet. You can collect the seeds too and consume them as an addition to dishes!
Chickweed, also a great source of minerals and vitamins! And it tastes amazing, you can use it instead of lettuce and I’d say it tastes even sweeter. Few sources have said that if you have too much of it, it can make your tummy ache, but I have disregarded this and consumed this plant in big quantities and remained unharmed.
Even if you can take the foraged plants only in small quantities, because they’re fairly small and it would take a long time to gather a lot, they’re so much richer in vitamins and minerals than the plants we usually eat, they can serve as a supplemental source of nutrition, and make sure you’re properly nourished and healthy thru the winter.

*•••*we are approaching fall/ winter season so here is a list of my fave teas to help you stay warm, hydrated and in a cal deficit*•••*:
Ginger tea
Helps with fat burning, bloating, digestion and warms up your body really well. You can drink it alone or mix it with green tea, lemon or cinnamon (only if you like strong spicy flavours!!)
Mint tea
Helps with hormonal balance, digestion and appetite. Also feels very calming and goes very well with green or black tea.
Green tea
A classic with tons of benefits like antioxidants, hydration, energy boosting and insulin regulation + weightloss. Definitely a must and you can mix it with so many things like lemon, ginger, mint or just honey.
Lemon tea
Very good for sick days especially with some honey or ginger or both. Lemon aids digestion and helps with bloating and provides a good amount of vitamin C for your immune system. I always prefer to mix it with green or black tea or any kind really it always goes perfectly
Hibiscus tea
This is such a pretty tea for its red vibrant color and i always like watching the brewing process, also if you get it whole you are basically drinking flower tea!! Hibiscus has a ton of benefits for female bodies it helps with hormones, uterus health and blood pressure. It's also very rich in antioxidants and good vitamins. I always drink it plain or with some honey.
The hot mess tea
This is a mix that i swear by every time i need to feel so hot that i forget we are in the cold season. You only have to simmer together cinnamon, ginger, lemon and honey. Fresh ingredients are preferred to powdered but you can use both, boil it for 15 minutes on a low flame and drink at your own risk! The heat you'll feel will make you think all the fat in your body is melting and the benefits from each ingredient will certainly make you addicted to this magic potion. I always feel cleansed and debloated after drinking.
....................
I always suggest drinking teas without adding sweeteners, only honey for some kinds. Also you can research the benefits and risks of every type before drinking if it's the first time.
Do you like tea? If so what are your favourite kinds?

For centuries, people have enjoyed this amazing gift of nature for its many health advantages, including its capacity to strengthen immunity.
Together, let's make this Christmas not only joyful but also healthy.
Understanding the Immune - Boosting Power of Honey
Not only is honey a healthy sweetener, but it also contains minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants that help boost your immune system.
Honey's antioxidants help in the fight against free radicals, which can impair your immune system.
Honey also has antiviral and antibacterial qualities that help prevent illnesses.
Because of this, honey becomes an extremely useful ally during the cold and flu season, keeping you healthy so you can enjoy the seasonal delicious foods.
Honey and Warm Drinks - A Comforting Defense Against Winter Illness
Honey is a must-have for holiday health since a spoonful in tea or warm water helps clear your throat and prevent frequent winter illnesses.
Adding honey to a warm glass of lemon water or a traditional cup of herbal tea can improve its calming properties.
Honey's natural enzymes help soothe sore throats, and its antiviral qualities help your body fight off cold viruses.
Have a warm beverage infused with honey first thing in the morning to gently strengthen your immune system.
DIY Honey Remedies - Simple Recipes to Keep Colds at Bay
This holiday season make effective honey-based medicines to stave off colds and the flu with a few simple ingredients. A typical treatment is a mixture of ginger and honey.
Just combine honey and shredded ginger, then let alone for a few hours. When a cold seems like it could come on, take a teaspoon of this combination.
Because of its antimicrobial qualities, honey and cinnamon paste make an additional potent treatment.
To maintain a strong immune system, combine one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon and take it on a regular basis.

Incorporating Honey into Your Holiday Meals
There are endless ways to include honey into your Christmas recipes, from glazes to desserts, to enhance the flavor and strength of your meals.
Try roasted veggies with a honey balsamic drizzle or ham with a honey glaze for a festive touch.
Honey might be the main ingredient in your Christmas treats if you're in the mood for something sweet.
Honey can be used to make honey cakes, cookies, or even just a honey drizzle over fruit or yogurt.
These recipes are delicious, but they also have the extra benefit of honey's ability to strengthen immunity.
Honey for Skin Care - Protecting Your Skin During the Festivities
Not only is honey edible, but it can also be used as a natural moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and shielded from the cold winter air.
Your skin may become dry and sensitive in the winter. Honey is a great addition to your skincare routine because of its inherent humectant qualities, which help seal in moisture.
How to Prepare;
Applying a small layer of honey to your skin and letting it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing off will make a basic honey face mask. Your skin will feel moisturized, smooth, and ready for the holidays after doing this.
Choosing the Best Honey - What to Look for This Christmas
Discover how to select the highest quality honey so you can maximize its health advantages over the holiday season.
Not all honey is created equal. Look for raw, unfiltered honey when shopping for honey, as it keeps the greatest nutrients and health-promoting enzymes.
Because of its strong antibacterial qualities, Manuka honey is a great option for increasing immunity.
To be sure you are getting the best product possible, always check the label for purity and attempt to get honey from nearby beekeepers.

Medicinal Garden Kit – BRAND NEW
A Lifelong Pharmacy in a Box: My Review of the Medicinal Garden Kit
I've always been curious about natural remedies and the idea of having a homegrown supply of medicinal herbs. But starting a garden from scratch, especially one focused on medicinal plants, seemed daunting. That's where the Medicinal Garden Kit came in, and let me tell you, it's been a game-changer!
Easy Does It: Perfect for Beginners
As someone with limited gardening experience, I was worried about the complexity of growing medicinal herbs. However, the Medicinal Garden Kit took all the guesswork out of it. It arrived with everything I needed: ten different seed packets with clear labels, high-quality potting mix, plant markers, and a comprehensive instruction booklet. The instructions were incredibly user-friendly, with detailed information on each herb, from sowing depths to watering requirements. Even for complete beginners like myself, the process felt manageable and even enjoyable.
A Bounty of Beneficial Herbs
The kit boasts a fantastic selection of ten diverse medicinal herbs. Each herb caters to a range of common ailments, from soothing chamomile for relaxation to immune-boosting echinacea for those winter sniffles. I was particularly excited about the inclusion of lavender, known for its calming properties, and peppermint, perfect for homemade teas. The variety in the kit ensures I have a natural remedy on hand for a variety of needs.
From Seed to Steep: The Joy of Cultivation
There's something incredibly rewarding about watching tiny seeds transform into thriving little plants. The Medicinal Garden Kit provided the perfect opportunity to witness this magic firsthand. Following the clear instructions, I planted the seeds and meticulously cared for them. The joy of seeing green shoots emerge after a few days was truly special. It's been fascinating to learn about each herb's specific needs and witness their unique growth patterns.
A Sustainable Source of Wellness
One of the things I love most about the Medicinal Garden Kit is its sustainability. Unlike store-bought herbs with questionable origins, I know exactly where these herbs come from – my own little windowsill or garden patch. Many of the herbs in the kit are perennials, meaning they'll come back year after year with proper care. This not only reduces waste but allows me to enjoy a continuous supply of fresh, homegrown medicinal herbs.
More Than Just a Garden, It's an Experience
The Medicinal Garden Kit has been more than just a way to grow herbs; it's been an enriching experience. It's reconnected me with nature, fostering a sense of accomplishment and pride as I watch my little herb garden flourish. The act of nurturing these plants has become a form of self-care, and the knowledge that I'm cultivating my own natural remedies empowers me to take a more proactive approach to my well-being.
If you're curious about natural remedies or simply want to try your hand at gardening, I highly recommend the Medicinal Garden Kit. It's a fantastic starter kit, perfect for beginners, and the sense of satisfaction you get from cultivating your own little patch of well-being is truly unmatched.

@bombardanne owled: // Dear Professor Garlick, Thank you so much for allowing me to correspond to you while I'm on leave from Hogwarts. If I return, I do promise to catch up on all the material possible to do well in your class again. I have an inquiry and I believe you to be the perfect person to answer. Are you aware of the healing properties of Shrivelfigs or Dandelion Juice? Or would there be something better to help remedy the symptoms I've described to you in my last letter? Eagerly awaiting, Anne Sallow. //
Dear Miss Sallow.
It's truly wonderful to hear from you and I do hope you've been well. I do so miss having you in my class, but I am so pleased to hear that you wish to continue to cultivate your herbology knowledge. I always say that plants have a way for just brightening up your day. If you wish, I could send an owl or two with some assignments to help keep you busy without the young Mr Sallow to entertain you?
Of course, native to Abyssinia, the Shrivelfigs are not exactly common to the Scottish Highlands. It is a deciduous plan but it's roots are aggressive enough deep to survive the winter. It's fruits and the liquid at its core are commonly used in potion making, but I fear that's more Professor Sharp's area of expertise than my own. Though I will admit I find Thunderbrew particularly interesting. As for the healing properties, there is said to be some benefits, but I believe these to be more temporary benefits rather than alleviating. Such as more of a pain relief than a cure. Given the plants use in the Elixir to Induce Euphoria.
Dandelion Juice on the other hand is a rather more common but underused addition for a greenhouse, the Highlands are full of the pretty little weeds. Dandelions while small actually hold many a health benefit. I would recommend dandelion tea. It's said to boost the immune system, regulate blood sugars and reduce inflammation among other benefits.
In terms of more herbology to consider, the mandrake - or Mandragora - is one to consider, it has some powerful healing properties. It has the ability to return people who have been cursed or transfigured to their original state; and you would find that any good medwitch or apothecary will have a number of seedlings and adults Mandrakes in their possession at they are essential ingredient of most antidotes
Grow well little rose,
Professor M. Garlick

Boost Winter Health with Dr. Crandall's "Super 5" Supplements
As winter approaches, it's imperative to prioritize your immune health to ward off the season's notorious illnesses like colds and flu. Dr. Chauncey Crandall, a distinguished cardiologist and director of preventive medicine at the Palm Beach Cardiovascular Clinic, shares his insights on how to keep your body resilient and healthy during these months.
Understanding the "Super 5" Supplements
Discover Dr. Crandall's "Super 5" supplements that are key to maintaining health and fighting off winter ailments. Vitamin D3: The Sunshine Vitamin Vitamin D3 is known for its role in supporting bone health and immune function. Despite sunny environments, many people are deficient in this essential vitamin. Dr. Crandall recommends 2,000 IUs daily of Vitamin D3 to help reduce respiratory infections. Incorporate foods like salmon and egg yolks to enhance your intake. Bolstering Your Defense with Vitamin C Vitamin C is celebrated for its immune-enhancing properties. Given its decreasing presence in diets, Dr. Crandall advises a daily intake of 1,000 mg. Add fruits like oranges and grapefruits to your nutrition plan to naturally boost your Vitamin C levels. The Necessity of Vitamin B12 and B-complex As absorption of Vitamin B12 diminishes with age, especially for those over 60, supplementing with B12 or a B-complex is advantageous. Obtain Vitamin B12 through foods such as meat, dairy, and eggs, or opt for high-dose supplements to remedy deficiencies. Omega-3 Fatty Acids for Heart and Brain Health Omega-3s, found in fatty fish like salmon, are vital for heart and brain function, particularly in combating infections and winter maladies. Introducing these essential fats into your diet can have profound health benefits. The Importance of Magnesium for Immune Support Magnesium facilitates restful sleep, which is fundamental for a robust immune system. As a potent antioxidant, magnesium aids in protecting nerve health and reducing cell damage, making it indispensable, especially in winter.
Additional Strategies for Winter Wellness
In addition to supplements, adopting holistic practices can significantly bolster your health throughout winter. Promote Digestive Health Efficient digestion is pivotal for nutrient absorption. Address any digestive issues like bloating, and ensure a healthy balance of gut flora to maintain optimal gut function. Hydration and Nutritional Insights Maintaining hydration is crucial. Focus on a diet rich in whole foods and low in sugar. Incorporate immune-boosting foods like garlic, green tea, and mushrooms to naturally enhance your defenses. General Health Practices Adhere to traditional health measures: wash hands thoroughly, avoid contact with the face, and manage stress effectively. These habits form the backbone of disease prevention.
Preparing for Flu Season
With flu season spanning from October to February, proactive measures like vaccination can be lifesaving. Flu Vaccination: A Vital Step Dr. Crandall underscores the flu vaccine's importance, particularly for seniors, who may benefit from higher-dose shots. Consider supplementation during winter months in regions with limited sunlight. By integrating these supplements and practices, you can fortify your immune system and enjoy a healthier winter season. Remember to consult with your healthcare provider before initiating any new supplement routine. Stay informed and explore more health tips and news updates on FROZENLEAVES NEWS. Read the full article
