Met a 76 yrs old Nepali woman today on the Red line. I told her that her fariya looked beautiful, and she asked me how I knew Nepali. I said it was my mother tongue, and immediately she tested my claim with questions about my last name, my ancestors, and Palpa. Finally convinced she started talking to me about her life in Amreeka. A white woman sat opposite to us with a “yoga mattress” tugged underneath her arms. My new friend looked at her and then said, “Amreekans like yoga very much hai?” I laughed at the irony of this; something that both of us were familiar with. “My son didn’t like it when my husband used to go outside our apartment and do yoga back in the day.” She continued. “He said that we were not in Nepal, and that our neighbors already did not like us. So my husband started jogging instead. But I didn't like running. I stayed in and meditated inside where no one would be watching.” I laughed, a little quieter this time, hoping that she wouldn’t catch the grief falling from it. “But now Amreekans like yoga very much. They even take money to teach it.” She said, then paused before asking me questions that for the next eleven minuets, replaced the void that lives in both of us away from Nepal.
