David Badash at NCRM:
Stephen Miller, the architect of Donald Trump’s child and family separation policy and one of his longest-serving, die-hard loyalists, will become the incoming president’s deputy chief of staff for policy, a top role in the second administration of the Republican nationalist. Miller, an immigration hardliner who was also responsible for Trump’s Muslim-majority country travel ban, has a history of promoting white nationalist rhetoric. He is responsible for the separation of thousands of young children from their parents, and even from their siblings, as a means to deter other asylum seekers from crossing the southern border into the United States. Under Trump and Miller’s “zero tolerance” policy, there were no plans to reunite the children with their parents. Despite efforts by the Biden administration, thousands of children have never been placed back into their families. As of May, 1400 children remained separated from their parents.
“Miller will return with more influence than he had in the first Trump administration, where he served as a senior adviser for policy, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN,” The Daily Beast adds, noting that Miller was also behind Trump’s “American carnage” inauguration address. CNN reports that “Miller is also a lead architect of the president-elect’s plans for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants. He has said that a second Trump administration would seek a tenfold increase in the number of deportations to more than 1 million per year. In an interview on Fox News last week, Miller expressed eagerness at the prospect of beginning mass deportations as soon as possible.” “They begin on Inauguration Day, as soon as he takes the oath of office,” Miller said.
White nationalist Stephen Miller will be in a plum post in the 2nd Trump Regime, as he has been named deputy chief of staff for policy.

I'd ask whether the Blue No Matter Who crowd had anything to add, but considering when they mean "lesser evil" they mean "more likely to spare the white middle-class" AND the fact that evil has no bottom so the goalpost will move onward to hell and beyond, they will never fucking shut up in our lifetime.

real talk its so fucking Difficult to have been raised by someone who moralized food down to the molecular level like I know it wasn’t done with intent to hurt me (in fact it was done with intent to save me which is more irritating bc i feel guilty for being so angry bc they really were doing what they thought was right) but being told from basically birth that i must be resilient against any food i found alluring and that not giving into things with any sugar or fat was a sign of strength is actually quite insane whenever i think about it. Being like 5 years old in the supermarket asking if we can get the off brand honey nut cheerios instead of the plain ones and getting a lecture in the middle of the aisle that sweet things are addictive and bad for me and im only going to trap myself in a dopamine cycle and that even the fact that I asked should be a lesson in how dangerous and tempting food can be and im like. Ok. I am a literal child and the what im taking away from this is certain foods are Evil and Evil Foods Taste Better and Feel Good For Your Body and Brain and that once you start indulging you can never stop like. bro i rlly never stood a chance 😭😩

The Biden administration and more than 4,000 migrants who were separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border by the Trump administration reached a legal settlement Monday that allows the families to live and work in the U.S. for three years while receiving housing, mental health and legal assistance to apply for asylum. The settlement also prohibits the federal government from separating any migrant families crossing the border for eight years, unless the parents are considered a danger to their children or the public or they have previously entered the country illegally more than twice. The deal, announced by the Justice Department, may end one of the darkest chapters in U.S. immigration policy, in which families crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally in 2017 and 2018 were systematically separated. Children younger than 18 were sent to the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services, while parents were prosecuted by U.S. attorneys in federal court.

Me in my head being like if people say that Clark is a good metaphor for the immigrant experience then I can add on & say i think Kon is a good metaphor for being the child of an immigrant. Like that whole never really getting to enjoy being a kid because you’re already working when you’re young, having to help out & then living your life just trying to amount to what your parents have already accomplished because they’ve already done so much like what happens if you can’t live up to it???

leslie sills -- "detention" (2020)
"some works [in this exhibition] decry the trump administration’s policy of separating children from their families at the mexican border. in 'detention,' a painting with collage that could be a fairy tale illustration, leslie sills portrays children asleep or fretting amid a sea of red cross blankets" ... cate mcquaid
"this is where i remain. while i explore the quotidian and celebrate it wholeheartedly, i am attuned as well to world crises and its victims. with compassion and empathy, i seek to portray those in need. in this way i see art as an agent for change, one that can enlighten the viewing public, make them think, and hopefully act accordingly" ... leslie sills
"i was standing on a ladder outside the homestead juvenile immigrant detention center outside miami, looking over the fence, and i saw children lined up like prisoners. they had been separated from their families and put in this private detention facility. it was horrible" ... kamala harris
"good night ... sleep tight ... don't let the dead bugs bite" ... al janik

Steve Benen at MSNBC's MaddowBlog:
As brutal as Donald Trump’s family-separation policy was during his presidency, the Republican hasn’t ruled out a sequel in a possible second term. In fact, as recently as Friday, the GOP nominee’s running mate, JD Vance, also hedged on whether to expect another round of family separations if voters return Trump to power. But in case that weren’t quite enough, it was something the Republican presidential hopeful said a day later that was every bit as jarring. As USA Today’s Rex Huppke noted in his latest column:
[At his weekend rally in Wisconsin, Trump brought up his sadistic plan to deport millions of immigrants, and he spun a dizzyingly dishonest tale about immigrants: “In Colorado they’re so brazen they’re taking over sections of the state. And you know, getting them out will be a bloody story.”]
[...] But it was the use of the word “bloody” that stood out. As a Washington Post analysis explained, “It’s a pledge not just of the cruelty of ostracism or subjugation. It’s a promise that the purported dangers of immigrants will be met with force, with cracked skulls or — as Trump reportedly suggested while serving as president — gunfire.” What’s more, let’s not lose sight of the larger pattern. Trump has targeted migrants with dehumanizing rhetoric that echoes Hitler — complaining about migrants “poisoning the blood of our country,” and insisting that migrants are “not humans” — all while promising to create militarized mass deportations and detention camps if voters reward him with a second term. He has even talked about putting migrants into a ring to fight for Americans’ entertainment.
Donald Trump’s 2nd term will feature a much crueler deportation agenda. Vote Kamala Harris to prevent such a nightmare scenario from happening.

Now that Donald Trump is coming back to office as USA’s chief executive, several policy shifts could significantly impact immigrants in the United States.
