Flirtatious Fate
Rafael Barba x Fem! Detective! Reader Tags: Near smut. Lots of flirting. Barba and Reader almost get caught. Sonny being a great advice giver. Word Count: 6.5k "And what if we are? Would that be such a bad thing?"
It wasn't at all uncommon for the counselor to work overtime.
Rafael more than likely worked more overtime hours than any of the attorneys in the whole building. He lived for his work, so it was no shock that it was nearly 8:00 o'clock and he was still buried in his work with no intention of going anywhere anytime soon. Most of the building had thinned out. All the people who were much better at maintaining a work-life balance had left hours ago - leaving Rafael as practically the only one left. Not that he minded, he could always work better alone.
But he didn't mind having some company. There were a few faces that he always was always welcome to and would always make time for...especially one in particular.
His attention was stolen away from his work when there was a knock on his open door, obviously indicating that someone was there to see him. Clearly, he wasn't the only one who pulled a lot of overtime hours.
He knew exactly who was at his door just by the specific sound of the knock. He wasn't sure how he knew, but he did - and his heart fluttered at the knowledge of the person at his door.
Their relationship was complicated, although neither of them realized that the way they acted toward one another made things a gray area. They simply believe they were colleagues...friendly colleagues at best. Somehow, neither of them really realized that their dynamic came from a much more personal and emotional place.
Nonetheless, he was happy she was there...even though he didn't realize it.
"Come in, detective." He said, without even giving a glance up from what he was working on.
A genuine smile was on the detective's face at the sound of his invitation. She entered the room with a cup of coffee in each hand, her foot kicking the door closed behind her as she entered. She was alone in her entrance, and the fact that her partner wasn't with her let him know this wasn't a business visit.
“Counselor,” She greeted. “Do you have time for coffee and a chat?”
If there was any single person in the world who could outdrink Rafael Barba when it came to coffee - it was [Y/N]. She could drink coffee at any time of day and could put down at least four cups a day. That was one thing they shared - they worked a lot and ran on nothing much pure passion for their job and heavy amounts of caffeine.
Rafael looked at her then, curious and intrigued. He wondered where her partner was, considering she was still dressed in her work attire, which also let him know she wasn't done working for the day.
"Be my guest," He gestured to the chair opposite his desk, leaning back in his own seat knowing he was about to be distracted completely. "What brings you here?"
She approached him, handing him a hot latte that was fresh and just to his liking. As coffee connoisseurs, they had entertained plenty of coffee conversations in the past. He wasn't really at all shocked that she knew his preference in coffee. He watched her from over the rim of his cup as she sat down with her own drink, clearly very comfortable in his presence.
"Carisi is upstairs talking to someone, so I figured I'd stop by and say hello." She said casually, but the sparkle in her eye let him know she had come by for more than a quick greeting.
A small smirk appeared on his face when he caught that look in her eyes. He knew her too well. She was here for a bigger reason. They were always usually very to the point with each other. They saw no reason to waste time when she was here with a purpose.
"Is that so? You came all this way just to say 'hello' to me?" He asked, a hint of playfulness in his normally dry tone.
She shrugged, a knowing grin appearing on her face as she ran her finger absentmindedly around the lid of her cup.
"Well..." She began. "I might have something interesting to tell you."
Now this made more sense. The coffee, the late visit, the giddiness. She was here to gossip - a habit that she frequently and flat out denied that she ever took part in.
"Okay," He nodded, his smirk now turning more curious. "Don't keep me in suspense."
She set her coffee down on his desk, now sitting up completely straight as she used both her hands to talk. He knew she had something big if she was this focused.
"You know how I'm kind of friends with the secretary on the fifth floor of the precinct?" She asked, jogging his memory. "Remember how I was telling you she had been acting strange?"
Rafael's eyes darted around the room as he racked his brain. mentally sorting through hundreds, if not thousands, of conversations the two of them had shared until he placed it.
"Yeah, you said she was acting secretive or something like that." He remembered, albeit vaguely.
"Right! You know I'm not one to gossip," She said, and Rafael had to fight the urge to roll his eyes at that comment. "But she's pregnant!"
Let the records show, Rafael had never met this said secretary before. The only things he knew about her were things that [Y/N] had disclosed to him, but evidently she had shared just enough with him for him to be all in on this revelation.
"No way," He tilted his head. "How do you know?"
"She told me!" She remarked. "I really couldn't believe it. I knew something was different about her. I had to come tell you when I could because you were the only person who agreed with me that something was up."
His heart fluttered again at that. It was purely just convenience that had brought her to his office that night, but it still made him shudder to think she had reserved a conversation solely for him.
"It seems we were right then," He took another sip, his eyebrows knitting together when he realized something. "Didn't you tell me she was single?"
There was a brief silence as she only shared a certain look with him. Her silence answered his question completely.
"Ah, so that's the crux of it all," He said, figuring he might as well fully emerge himself in this gossip session. "So, I'm guessing you have information on who the father is?"
"No," She shook her head. "I'm still working on that one...but I have a few guesses."
"Let's hear them." He encouraged her.
Normally, it would've been so unusual for Rafael to engage in this kind of talk. He didn't rightly care what a stranger to him had going on in their personal life...but he didn't like them the way he liked the detective sitting pretty in front of him, genuinely enjoying conversing with him on any given day.
"The rumor on the fifth floor is that it's a cop over in narcotics..." She took a quick glance over her shoulder to make sure no one was listening. "But that said cop has been gone for nearly six months. I don’t think the math adds up.”
Rafael considered her statement, nodding in agreement and urging her to continue.
"My other guess is a bit far-fetched, but not unreasonable," She said. "A few weeks ago she went home to Chicago to visit her family, and I remember her mentioning to me that she was thinking about paying an old flame of hers a visit..."
"Oh, that's interesting...and certainly a possibility, I suppose." He replied. "Is that all?"
"Yeah, that's all I got," She shrugged. "I am being unfair. I shouldn't be making a conversation out of her business."
Rafael chuckled, shaking his head.
"Well, we all indulge in a little nosy talk here and there." He said, feeling a pang of disappointment knowing this conversation was coming to an end.
“I know, I know. That’s really all I know," She reached for her coffee cup again. "But enough about me. How are things going here?”
He chuckled when she changed the subject, noticing her eyes lingering on his. He should've known she had something else locked and loaded.
"Things here are…as expected," he said, gesturing to the stacks of files on his desk. "Too many cases, too little time." He picked up his coffee, taking a sip before continuing. "But I always manage, one way or another."
“That you do, counselor.” She grinned. “This case has been a tough one…how are you holding up?”
He leaned back in his chair, a weary smile on his face.
"You know how it is." He said, and that was all he needed to say for her to completely understand.
"That I do," She sighed. "After all these years, I've never quite mastered dealing with everything we see."
"It's not easy, that's for sure," He said. "But I must say, you've handled yourself quite well in difficult situations, detective."
“I try my best,” She shrugged. “Some days I wonder if I should've stuck with my college job."
"Which was...?" He probed.
"Bartending," She confessed. "Also a stressful job, but nothing like doing police work."
This was new information to him. He actually didn't know that about her. He chuckled, imagining her in a bar apron, wiping down tables and listening to drunken rants.
"I could see that." He teased, a playful smile on his face. "But then we would be missing out on your skills as a detective."
She gave a small laugh, but didn't respond just yet. They sat in a comfortable silence, the conversation fizzling out before a new one blossomed.
"Maybe I need a vacation." She said in a way that seemed random, but this was usually how their conversations went. They would start on one topic and then end up somewhere completely different within minutes.
He took the opportunity to tease her, something that was also very common for their interactions.
"From SVU or from me?" He joked, the playful banter coming easy between them.
"Oh, never from you, Rafael." She matched his tone, his first name sliding off her tongue like it was something she said often.
He felt a brief flash of surprise when she used his first name, but he quickly recovered and played along with the banter.
"Careful, detective. That sounds almost affectionate." He teased.
She scoffed at that, an entertained smile on her face.
"We work for the law. We hardly have time to be affectionate in any regard." She said, and it was completely true.
"Yet here we are, two busy people making time for each other." He took a sip of his coffee, then looked at her with a more serious expression. "But you're right, it's not easy to balance work and personal life. Especially in our line of work."
“I can relate. Somehow you and my co-workers are the only people I really talk to,” She spoke, her voice soft. “Not…that I mind talking to you. Who else is going to tell you the neighborhood gossip?”
He smiled, genuinely flattered that she considered him one of her few friends.
"I must admit," he said, a hint of jest in his voice. "I do enjoy hearing your neighborhood gossip. It breaks up the monotony of the legal jargon."
“I imagine it does,” She returned a smile. “Maybe eventually we’ll figure out how to balance work and personal lives. Figure out how to do something other than work.”
Clearly they often toed the line between being professional, being casual, and being flirtatious. This was their norm. Everybody who knew them wouldn't even bat an eye at this conversation between them. But what Rafael said next would've raised a few brows. He wasn't sure what made him say it. Maybe it was the late hour or the moment just felt right, but he made a remark that couldn't have been confused as anything other than personal.
"Maybe we will. It's about time we started making time for ourselves." He paused, then said with a teasing smile. "And each other."
Her gaze fixed on him, her eyes slightly squinted as she smirked at him. She wasn't sure if he was being serious or not. Neither of them had ever crossed this line before. They were both aware that this was a new level of comfort with one another.
“Counselor, are you flirting with me?”
A sly smile tugged at the corner of his lips as he held her gaze.
"And if I was, detective?" He retorted.
“Mark me as surprised,” She said. “But flattered.”
They were both confident people...stubborn at times too. There would be no backing down from this. He chuckled, enjoying the back and forth banter. He leaned a bit closer in his chair, his smile growing wider.
"Is that so? You're not going to accuse me of being unprofessional?"
“That would make me a hypocrite. Me waltzing in here and gossiping about my coworker is unprofessional,” She leaned forward. “I consider this a flirtatious and pleasant conversation.”
He raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her words. He leaned closer as well, his voice a little lower now.
"Just a pleasant conversation, hm? You're not going to tell your other coworkers about this little chat?"
This situation was turning and it was turning fast. It had gone from casual to playful, and now they were trodding in a territory they had never ventured to before. This was different, but neither were backing down.
“Not at all, Counselor, if the thought of someone knowing bothers you so much.” She stood from her chair, eyes locked on him.
His smirk grew wider as she stood up, his eyes never leaving hers.
"It doesn't bother me at all." He assured her, rising to his feet as well. He moved around the desk, closing the distance between them. "In fact, I quite enjoy these little chats of ours."
“If we aren’t careful, we might become the precinct gossip.” She looked up at him, eyes sparkling.
He chuckled, finding the idea of being the source of gossip in the precinct strangely amusing. He took a step closer, his voice a low murmur as he spoke.
"And what if we are? Would that be such a bad thing?"
“Well, I would be getting a taste of my own medicine I suppose,” She said, realizing their noses were nearly touching. “Amongst other things.”
He let out a soft exhale, feeling his heart rate quicken at her close proximity. The air between them felt electrified.
"And those other things would be?" He asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
“Whatever you suggest we do to ‘make time for each other’?” She said smoothly. “What did you have in mind?”
He chuckled, his gaze locked with hers. He reached out with a slow, tentative hand, gently tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. The feel of her skin under his fingers sent a shiver down his spine.
"I have plenty of ideas," he said, his voice low and filled with promise, "but we should probably discuss them somewhere more… private."
“Are you thinking private thoughts, Counselor?” She replied.
He leaned in a little closer, his voice dropping to a sultry whisper.
"What do you think, detective?" His hand moved to her cheek, his thumb tracing a gentle line along her jawline. The proximity was intoxicating, and he couldn’t resist the urge to toy with her a bit more.
“I’m thinking a couple of drinks over dinner,” She said, her voice supple and sultry. “Dessert at my place.”
He chuckled, his eyes darkening with desire at her words. He lifted his other hand, gently cupping her face, his thumbs brushing against her cheeks. He leaned even closer, his lips grazing against her ear as he whispered.
"Sounds like a perfect plan."
“Don’t you want to know what you’ll be having for dessert?” She asked, her control getting close to wobbling.
His lips curled into a sinful smile, the double meaning behind her words and the shiver in her voice were all the invitation he needed. He moved even closer, his breath hot against her ear, his voice huskier than before.
"Show me, detective. I’m absolutely starving."
She smiled an awfully sultry grin, her teeth toying with her bottom lip as she whispered.
“You’re looking at it.”
His eyes darkened with a mixture of restraint and desire, a low growl rumbling in his chest. He was losing control, his hands gripping her face a bit tighter now.
"Careful, detective. If you keep talking like that, I'll have you right now on this desk."
Fire was burning between them. Their minds were racing and hearts were pounding with the knowledge of where this was going. Neither cared to try and figure out how this was happening so fast. Neither of them needed to. They just knew something between them was mutual and it was coming out in full force.
He backed her into the desk, the backs of her thighs pressed against the edge of the desk. Her hands came to start working on getting his tie off, his hands planted high on her thighs underneath her skirt. Her lips brushed against his as her breathing became heavy, the two of them mere milliseconds from going at it when there was a knock on his office door and it creaked open.
Both Rafael and the detective froze, the moment shattered by the intrusion. Rafael took a moment to compose himself, his face flushing with a mix of annoyance and embarrassment as he attempted to conceal the fact that they had been just seconds away from being intimate on his desk.
He cleared his throat and took a few steps back, allowing some space between them. They both were quick to readjust themselves, totally coming back to reality of what just almost happened. Her heart was hammering away in her chest, her cheeks tinted pink as she adjusted her skirt. The intruder was none other than her detective partner, Sonny Carisi, who was blissfully unaware that he was just barely seconds away from walking in on his partner and his squad's counselor going at it.
Sonny stepped into the office, his expression serious. However, he hadn’t yet noticed the tense atmosphere in the room or the telltale signs of intimacy that were still evident on Rafael and the detective’s faces. He approached Rafael, his eyes fixed on the district attorney.
"Counselor...we have an issue with one of the witnesses in the case. Can I have a word?"
She was trying to hold her composure, acting like she wasn’t just about to get down and dirty with the counselor. Rafael took a deep breath, attempting to compose himself. The interruption had cooled the heat between them a bit, but the tension in the room was still palpable. He cleared his throat and addressed Sonny, his voice slightly strained as he tried to keep it together.
"Yeah...w-what's the issue with the witness?"
She could hardly stand to be in the room anymore. She was having a hard time processing how an innocent conversation turned so hot so quickly. Rafael had never expressed that kind of feeling with her. They had never gotten that close before. Sure, they faintly flirted, but never so outright before. She was overwhelmed, and now she felt like she needed some air.
“Sonny, you finish up here,” She said, her voice a bit shaky from the adrenaline. “I’m…I’ll meet you downstairs.”
Sonny's eyes flicked between Barba and the detective, sensing that there was more going on than he was aware of. He was puzzled by her shaky voice, and something about the tension in the room felt odd, but he didn’t have time to question it. As the detective made her way out of the room, Rafael's gaze followed her, a mixture of disappointment and concern etched on his face as she left.
Rafael had never shared that kind of moment with her. To be honest, he wasn’t sure where it had come from. Sure, he liked her and favored her, but he had never made a move on her before. But in all fairness, she had never reciprocated quite like that.
Rafael couldn’t deny that the moment with her had been explosive, a spark igniting between them that he hadn’t expected. He had always liked her, but this was a whole different level of attraction. Her response to him had triggered a deep, intense desire that he couldn’t ignore. As Sonny continued to talk, Rafael struggled to focus on the conversation, his mind going back to the moment they had shared just moments before.
He just wanted to help Sonny and get him out of his office so he could handle this. But of course, Sonny always needed to know everything.
“Is…everything alright between you and her, Counselor?”
Rafael flinched, snapped out of his thoughts by Sonny's question. He blinked a couple of times and cleared his throat, trying to hide his preoccupation.
"Yeah, everything's just fine, Carisi," he said, his tone a little guarded. "Why do you ask?"
“I’ve never seen her run out like that. Especially when you’re around,” Sonny remarked.
Rafael shifted uneasily in his chair as he sat down, the observation not being lost on him. He tried to play it off as nonchalantly as possible.
"I suppose she just had something to take care of. She seemed… in a hurry." He said, his words sounding unconvincing even to him.
Sonny didn’t believe him. He knew his partner, and he could tell when someone was lying. Something had happened in this office before he came in.
Rafael realized that Sonny wasn’t buying his response, and he silently cursed himself for not being more convincing. The air in the room felt heavy, and he knew he had to change the subject or risk further questioning.
"Is there anything else you needed to discuss regarding the case, Detective Carisi?" Rafael asked, trying to sound as impassive as possible.
Sonny caught the way Rafael changed the subject. He wasn’t getting anything from Rafael, so he decided to try his partner, who was downstairs waiting for him.
“No...alright…” Sonny said. “We’ll…we’ll be in touch.”
Rafael nodded, a slight look of relief on his face as Sonny seemed to accept the change in topic. As Sonny turned to leave, Rafael couldn’t help but feel a pang of worry about what might happen once he spoke to the detective.
He took a deep breath, trying to gather his thoughts, but his mind was still buzzing from the encounter that had just taken place, and the uncertainty of what would happen next gnawed at him. Sonny wasted no time getting to the elevator, taking it to the ground floor. Sure enough, she was standing just outside on the sidewalk, her hand resting over her chest as she took slow deep breaths of the cold New York air.
She let the cold air of New York City fill her lungs, the chill helping to clear her mind. She tried to steady her rapid heartbeat, still shaken by the intensity of the moment she and Rafael had shared. The thought of what might have happened if Sonny hadn’t walked in sent a shudder down her spine. What was she thinking?
She was so distracted by her thoughts that she didn’t notice Sonny approaching until he was standing beside her.
“Sonny.” She nearly gasped, her heart lurching in surprise.
Sonny chuckled at her reaction and raised an eyebrow, a sly smile on his face.
"Whoa, easy there. You almost jumped out of your skin." he teased, trying to lighten the mood.
“I’m sorry, you scared me.” She sighed. “Are you ready to go?” She gestured toward the SVU car they had taken.
Sonny nodded, and as they headed toward the car, he shot her a sideways glance, curious about what had just transpired upstairs.
He wasn’t a detective for nothing, and he could sense that there was more to the story. Something was off, especially given her demeanor and the flushed look on her face.
She slid into the passenger seat, feeling a bit less shaky now that she had a few minutes to calm down. Her mind was still reeling, but she didn’t feel like she was going to pass out anymore.
Sonny walked around the car and got behind the wheel, his gaze flickering to her every now and then. As they started driving, he decided to go for it and ask the question that had been on his mind since he walked in on his partner and the Counselor.
"So, what was that all about? You left his office looking like you’d seen a ghost." He said.
She took a subtle deep breath, trying to center herself for a round of questioning that was no doubt coming.
“It was nothing really,” She responded as coolly as possible. “I’m just tired, I think. I just needed a second to gather myself.”
Sonny gave her a skeptical look, her response only adding to his suspicion. She was obviously trying to brush it off, but he was not convinced.
"Come on. You know I wasn’t born yesterday," he said, his tone laced with mild irritation. "Something happened up there."
“I don’t know what you’re talking about…” She said, reaching for her phone that vibrated in her pocket.
As she checked her phone, Sonny gave her a knowing look. He could sense that she was dodging the question, and it only fueled his suspicion further.
"Oh, really? Then why won’t you look me in the eye?" he asked, his voice a bit challenging now. "Who’s sending you text messages, huh? The Counselor?”
Her heart dropped, because despite the fact that Sonny’s question was a joke — he was right. She stared at the text message that had just come in from Rafael.
A sly smile crept onto Sonny's face as he spotted the change in her expression, a clear indication that he hit a sore spot.
"Bingo," he said, his tone dripping with smugness. "That’s what I thought. What did he say?"
Sonny glanced at her, his curiosity piqued. He could tell she was reading a text message, but he couldn’t see what it said.
"So, are you planning to share that text with me, or are you just going to keep me in suspense?" he said, his voice filled with playful annoyance.
She didn't even really mean to, but she read the text out loud for herself and Sonny to hear.
Call me when you can. Please.
Sonny raised an eyebrow, a smirk spreading across his face. He couldn’t help but feel a little amused by the situation.
"‘Please?’" he repeated, a hint of mockery in his voice. "Sounds like the counselor is desperate to talk to you."
Sonny had her cornered, and she knew it. There was no getting anything past Sonny, especially since they worked so closely every single day.
“Sonny..." She whined, knowing he was more on to her than she realized.
Sonny chuckled at her response, thoroughly enjoying the teasing. He knew he had her now.
"Come on," he said, feigning innocence. "Don’t sound so surprised. I’ve seen the way you two look at each other when you think no one’s watching."
“Now I really don’t know what you’re talking about,” She huffed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Sonny took his eyes off the road for a moment to shoot her a sidelong glance, a knowing smile on his lips.
"Oh, please. You really think you’re discreet?" he said. "The tension between you two is so thick, a blind man could see it."
She rubbed her eyes stressfully, unsure of how to respond to Sonny, and even more unsure of how to proceed with Rafael. Seeing her stressed out, Sonny’s playful tone softened slightly. While he enjoyed teasing her, he could see that the situation was weighing on her.
"Hey, relax," he said, throwing her a gentle smile. "It’s just me, alright? You can talk to me, you know?"
“No, I can’t…” She sighed. “Not about this.”
Sonny’s smile faded slightly at her response. He could tell that whatever had happened in Rafael’s office was more serious than he initially thought. It wasn’t just some harmless flirtation between her and the district attorney. He cleared his throat and spoke with a more serious tone now.
"Why not? Come on. You and I have been friends for a long time, haven’t we? You can trust me."
“I trust you,” She said. “It’s not that, it’s just…complicated.”
Sonny furrowed his brow, his interest piqued even further. The way she said ‘complicated’ made it clear that there was more to this than he initially thought. He knew there was something she was holding back, but he wasn’t going to let it go that easily.
"Complicated, huh? In what way?" he asked, his voice calm but filled with genuine curiosity.
At this point, she knew Sonny wasn’t going to let this go. Sonny could keep a secret better than anyone, so she figured she might as well give it up. She told him the story, leaving out a few graphic details, but she told him enough for him to get the picture.
Sonny listened intently as she spoke, his expression stoic as he absorbed the details of what had transpired between her and Rafael. He didn’t say a word as she recounted the encounter, his gaze steady on the road ahead of them.
When she finished her story, he was silent for a moment, considering everything that had been said. Then, he spoke up, keeping his voice neutral.
"So, let me get this straight. You and the Counselor got hot and heavy in his office, but things got interrupted, and now you don’t know what to do next?"
“That about sums it up,” She sighed again. “If we had gone all the way…I don’t even know. I don’t know where to go from here and I don’t know if I can ever work with him again…”
Sonny exhaled softly, his jaw tensing slightly. He hadn’t been expecting it to be that serious. He could sense the internal struggle she was having and understood her confusion. He knew it wasn’t easy, juggling personal feelings and professional responsibilities.
"Whoa, whoa. Hold on," he said, trying to get a grip on the situation. "First of all, it didn’t go that far. Nothing…happened, right?"
“It was close,” She admitted. “But no. Sonny, Olivia will kill me if she finds out. She would flip if she found out I got cozy with the counselor…”
Sonny nodded slowly, processing her words. The fact that she was worried about Olivia’s reaction spoke volumes about how seriously she was taking this. He respected her devotion to the job, and he knew how highly her superiors thought of her.
"Okay, first of all, Olivia’s not going to ‘kill’ you. Besides, this isn’t exactly the first time a relationship has happened between coworkers."
“Yeah, but it’s different. It’s…me. You know how she is with me. I’m the youngest on the squad,” She took a deep breath. “If she knew Rafael made a move on me…”
Sonny could see the weight of the situation pressing heavily on her. He understood her concerns.
"I get that you don’t want to disappoint her," he said in a reassuring tone. "The thing is, this whole thing with Barba…you didn’t exactly pursue him, right? He’s the one who made a move. And as far as I can tell, it sounds like it was completely out of the blue for you."
“It…wasn’t really out of the blue,” She confessed. “I mean, I didn’t go in there expecting what happened but…like you said we’re pretty…flirtatious. And I didn’t push him away.”
Sonny chuckled slightly at her confirmation that she hadn’t exactly shut down whatever had been going on between her and the Counselor. He knew they’d had a spark.
“So, let me get this straight: you and Barba have been flirty with each other for a while, and eventually, things got heated in his office. Is that about right?”
Sonny nodded when she confirmed it, the situation starting to make more sense to him now.
"And now you don’t know what to do because you’re worried about your job, your relationship with Olivia, and whatever might happen next with Barba?”
“Right,” She replied. “It happened so fast…I don’t know how I got here.”
Sonny chuckled softly as he listened to her concerns.
"You got here, because you and Barba have chemistry," he said bluntly. "The question is, what are you going to do about it?"
“I don’t know what to do about it,” She read the text from Barba again. “How do you even move forward from something like this?”
Sonny shot her a sympathetic glance, understanding her anxiety.
"Hey, it sounds like you’re feeling a bit out of your comfort zone here, and that’s alright." He said reassuringly. "You’re usually more reserved, and this situation’s a bit more intense than you’re used to. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It could mean that something about Barba really does it for you."
“Yeah, I could’ve told you that. I guess I need to respond,” She stared at her phone. "He wants me to call him later. So he will probably reject me and tell me it was a mistake and it never should’ve happened and then things will be awkward and then I’ll have to leave SVU and then I’m back to making traffic stops-“
Sonny reached over and grabbed her arm firmly, stopping her mid-rant. He chuckled slightly at her panicked ramblings.
"Slow down there," he said, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Take a deep breath. You're getting way ahead of yourself."
“Maybe…” A smile appeared on her face without realizing it. “I’ll just…tell him I’ll call him when I can.”
Sonny chuckled along with her, enjoying the lighter tone of the conversation. He was glad to see that his teasing had lifted her spirits, at least a little bit.
"Hey, you never know," He said with a shrug and a smirk. "Stranger things have happened. Maybe Barba’s completely smitten with you and can’t wait to see you again."
“Alright, alright…” She replied. “One step at a time. Let’s finish this workday.”
Sonny chuckled at her response, sensing her determination to get through the last couple hours of their long workday and not let the situation with Barba consume her. He nodded in agreement.
"You got it," he said, his tone back to business. "I've got your back, no matter what happens next."
___
They returned to the precinct, tying up their loose ends for the day so they could get the day finished. She tried to put Rafael in the back of her mind. She just needed to get through her shift and then go from there. She hoped she would feel better once she and Rafael talked, no matter what the outcome was.
Sonny shot a few glances at her, sensing her attempt to keep her mind off the situation with the Counselor. He knew she was struggling to focus on work when her mind was preoccupied.
As the day came to an end, Sonny casually looked down at his watch and spoke up.
"You know, we're just about done for the day. You…uh…have plans for the rest of the night?"
She gave him a look.
“I’m going to call him as soon as I leave,” She said. “If he’s still at his office, I might swing by.”
Sonny gave her a reassuring pat on the shoulder, his eyes filled with genuine concern.
"You're gonna handle this, one way or another." he said, his voice firm and steady.
“Okay,” She nodded. “I’ll text you when it’s over.”
Sonny waved her goodbye, and she didn't waste any time getting out of the precinct. She dialed Rafael's number on the way out of the building.
The phone rang a few times before the familiar voice of Rafael Barba answered on the other end.
“Hey.” His tone was calm and composed.
“Counselor.” She greeted as calmly as she could.
There was a hint of surprise and relief in Rafael's voice as he recognized her on the other end of the line. He had been hoping she would call.
"I wasn’t sure if you’d call." He said plainly.
“Of course I did,” She let out a silent sigh. “Are you…still at your office?”
There was a slight pause before Rafael responded, the anticipation heavy in his voice.
"Yes," he replied. "Do you…want to come by?"
Her heart fluttered, there really was no turning back.
“Yeah, I figured I would come by so…we could talk. I can be there in 20 minutes…”
They sorted out the details before the call ended, and she knew this was going to either be a pleasant or brutal talk. She knew she might be losing one of her best friends by the end of the night. She had never felt more unsure, but she couldn't even deny that maybe she was curious to see how this developed...if it developed at all.
Her mind raced as she made her way to Rafael's office. She thought of every possible outcome in this scenario...the best case, the worst case, and everything in between. She felt the knot of anxiety in her stomach getting heavier by the minute. She laid eyes on her destination and knew it was now or ever. She needed to compose herself and pull it together. She wanted to walk out of this situation with him still an important part of her life.
The building was closed down for the night, all the offices dark and closed...except for his. It was now or never. If there was ever a moment where she felt like she was about to seal her fate...it was right now.
She took the elevator to the floor of his office, her brain actively controlling her breathing to be as calm and slow as possible. Her heart was pounding away, and she wasn't sure if it was the nerves or the knowledge of seeing him again after what had happened.
His office door was closed, but a glow of light was shining from behind the closed blinds on his windows and under the door. She gave a light knock on the door, a slow exhale escaping her as she waited for him to answer.
She heard some shuffling from behind the door, knowing he was undoubtedly trying to quickly straighten up his desk before he allowed her inside. A few seconds passed before he opened the door -- his tired eyes meeting hers with the same look of anxiety and curiosity of what was about to happen. There was no turning back now, and they both felt like they were prepared.
But little did they know, their night was about to get far more interesting than they planned for.

Taste Test - Rafael Barba Imagine [Law & Order: SVU]
Title: Taste Test
Pairing: Rafael Barba X Reader
Word Count: 1,075 words
Warning(s): none that I'm aware of
Summary: The SVU detectives go to visit their favorite ADA at his office. They end up finding out more about him than they ever planned to.
Author's Note: I needed something fast and cute to give me a break from some of the longer stories that I'm working on (there is a doctor who oc story and a grimm story in the works right now). I'm also on the tail end of my master's program, so it's all a little bit hectic right now.
---------------------------
I rarely ever had the time to visit Rafael at his office.
Even without considering his frantic and busy work schedule, mine simply never allowed it. I owned the bakery that my dad had opened years ago. I took over after his retirement and I hadn't stopped moving at top speed since. It was always looking at the menu or staffing or some crisis that needed to be fixed right then and there.
But sometimes, just sometimes, I would have a day where I had enough people and a slow enough flow of customers that I could pack a little bag of treats and a few drinks and go see him at lunch.
Today was one of those very lucky days.
Rafael's office door was slightly open when I got there. I knocked on it lightly, pushing it just enough to peak my head through.
"Hello- (Y/n)." he stood up as soon as he saw me. "What are you doing here?"
"Slow day," I replied with a shrug. "Thought that I could tempt you into a break with some food and coffee."
"If there's a day that I say no to that, assume that someone has replaced me with a clone."
"Noted," I chuckled, placing the bag and the drink carrier on the round table in the corner. I handed him one cup. "Here, try this. It's a potential drink for the summer menu."
"Alright." he took a small sip of the drink. He nodded. "It's good. What is it?"
"It's basically a latte but made with rose milk and rose foam."
"How... How do you make rose milk?"
"Shh, don't ask questions," I said as I sat down in one of the table's chairs. Rafael chuckled as he sat next to me. "Do you really like it?"
"It's great," he promised.
"Good," I mumbled. "I was a bit worried about it."
"You have reason to be." Rafael grabbed my hand over the table. "You are a genius when it comes to making up drinks."
"I hope you feel the same way about my ability to make up food," I replied, reaching into the bag that I had brought with me. I put down a napkin and plopped a muffin on the top.
"Oh, absolutely," he let go of my hand to pick up the muffin. I chuckled as he did. He took a bite and hummed. "This is a winner."
"Glad to hear." I leaned over and swiped some crumbs off of his chin with my thumb. "But you do praise all of my food."
He hummed again as he took another bite, nodding before he was able to speak, "Because all of your food is amazing."
I grabbed my drink, taking a sip before changing the subject, "How has your day been? Anything important happening?"
"Not yet-"
"Barba-"
We both looked to the door as a group of people walked in. There were three of them; two women and a man.
"Perfect timing," Rafael mumbled to me. I would have chuckled if I hadn't been so caught off guard.
"Hello," one of the women said.
"Hi," I replied, standing up as I did.
The woman looked at Rafael. "I didn't know that you had a meeting."
"It's... It's not a meeting," I explained quickly. I always spoke quickly when I was nervous and having three people suddenly walk into the room with no warning made me very nervous. "I was just stopping by for lunch."
"Detectives," Rafael stood up behind me, touching my back. "This is (Y/n). My partner. (Y/n), these are some of the detectives from the S.V.U. Olivia Benson, Amanda Rollins, and Sonny Carisi."
"Nice to meet you all."
"You too," Olivia nodded at me. "I hope he hasn't been hiding you from us."
I chuckled. "No, no, not at all. I- I own a little bakery and cafe place not too far from here. I tend to be pretty swamped, but I had some downtime, so I stopped by for lunch."
"I thought that I recognized you!" Sonny pointed at me. "I've been by your shop."
"Oh, good, hope you liked it."
"Oh, loved it," he said. He turned to the other detectives. "There was this awesome sandwich thing on the menu during the fall. I've been craving it for months."
"I'll make note of that, so I remember to bring it back this year," I promised. "In the meantime, I'd be happy to treat you all to some food and drinks. I'm starting to sort out the summer menu; you should all come over sometime and test out some of the ideas I have."
"You don't have to-"
"I want to," I stopped Olivia in her tracks. "You guys work with Rafael so much that we might as well be friends. Plus, I need some other guinea pigs than just him. I'm sure Rafael would be more than happy to sort out a night for you and anyone else on your team to join us."
He looked over at me, pausing before he replied, "Over the moon."
"See?"
"Alright then," Olivia nodded. I glanced over to see Sonny trying to subtly celebrate the good news.
"I should get out of the way," I touched Rafael's shoulder as I spoke before going to grab my drink. "I'm sure whatever you all need to talk about is more important than my seasonal menu."
"I'll walk you out." Rafael guided me to the door.
We walked together to the point where we were just out of view of the windows in his office. I turned around and placed a quick kiss on his lips.
"I'll see you tonight," he muttered.
"Can't wait," I mumbled back. "Don't forget about the little tasting event that we're hosting."
"I won't," he promised, leaning over to kiss me again. He added a second kiss to my temple. "I love you."
"Love you too," I said before pulling away properly.
My phone started ringing as soon as I started walking out.
"I'm already on my way back," I answered before any question could be asked.
"Thank God." I heard from the other end. "Someone is promising to come back and have a stern talk to you."
"Great, sounds fun. I'll be there in a few minutes."
I let out a huff as I hung up and started jogging down the street.
Sometimes these short lunch dates were the only thing keeping me from running for the hills.
---------------------------
Author's Note: The drink I described is actually an actual drink at local coffee shop in my area! I am not clever enough to make it up myself.

Kinktober Day 10: Dry Humping
Rafael Barba x GN! Reader
Summary: Getting a little handsy during a quick massage.
Warnings/Tags: Established Relationship, Smut, Desk Sex, Dry Humping, Grinding
Kinktober Masterlist
Minors do not interact!
Massaging Rafael's stressed shoulder, hearing him sigh, still on the phone, pen in hand, struggling to write anything down while your hands worked their magic.
Lifting one hand away, opening his neck to your lips, softly kissing the ADA's neck, smelling his familiar aftershave. Hearing this, he hissed in response before quickly apologizing to the person on the other end of the phone, making up some excuse.
Though he didn't stop you, so you continued. Traveling up quickly, nibbling and kissing the soft tissue of his ear, Rafael purred in reaction, though it was short-lived, having slid your hand slowly down the opening of his buttoned shirt.
With no tie there to stop you, it having been undone and thrown to the side, laying disheveled on his desk. Holding your cold hand against Rafael's warm chest, pulling small gasps from him, tempted to go lower, but you wait, wanting to spare him from full embarrassment.
Finally hanging up the call watching him struggle to put the phone back, hearing as he slams it back in slightly wishing it were you. Quickly pulling your hand out of Rafael's shirt, pushing back his chair, granting you access to sit upon his desk. Relaxed in his office chair, watching all of your actions from the way you stared lustfully while opening your legs inviting him in.
Rising from the chair slowly as if not to spook you, wanting everything the way it is while fitting perfectly in between your legs, planting his hot lips against yours. Both moaning in the kiss, his hands traveling down, pulling your hips closer, allowing you to feel his hard cock poking desperately through his pant's fabric.
Two hands cupped your face as his hips moved against you, Rafael's moans quickly turning into groans. The friction of his cock gives you some pleasure, causing your hips to match his wanting more and more.
Hello, I hope you enjoyed if there is any grammar mistakes or misspellings sorry about that feel free to let me know in the comments, have a great day/afternoon/night!

₊ ⊹🪻 ✧ ˚. ᵎᵎ 🔮
n.amaro x reader
summary: you were younger then nick by a couple of years, and sometimes he’d come over to your apartment after late nights at the precinct, he’d come over to just enjoy peace and serenity
content: fluff, reader is in school (2nd or 3rd year of college) suggestive acts (nothing extreme), age gap!, mentions of sexual abuse due to svu cases, nothing too triggering, just a fluffy one shot overall
super short
✧ ✧
it was late at night, you were working on an essay that was due by the end of the week.. you were getting strained and decided to take a break and call it a day.
You made yourself a quick meal, spicy buldak noodles, a sandwich and your favorite drink that was saved in the fridge. You prepared your meal as you were watching your favorite show. you were almost done preparing your late-night snack when you heard the doorknob shake.
You lived a pretty safe vicinity so the chances of a burgler were slim, but you still were vigilant about your safety, you quickly grabbed your broom and held it tight.
Upon your discovery, the door opened and you saw your boyfriend… nick.
You sighed of relief, and he looked at you worried
“Jesus Nick, you scared me!” “geez sorry, i thought this neighbor was safe?”
you put the broom down, “I mean it is but you never know” “yeah.. tell me about it”
he walked to you as you went back in finishing preparing your ramen, he went behind you and grabbed you hips and nuzzled his head in between your neck, kissing you, making you giggle due to his stubble
he continued and you moved your head slightly to give him more access, he took this as a sign to continue. You tried not to get distracted but you let a soft moan escape.
he laughed, and started moving up your body; cupping your boobs. You laughed and finally pushed him away
“stop Nick” you laughed “I want to eat, I’ve been working on an assignment for the past 5 hours.” he let go and laughed “my hard working girl, okay okay I’ll let you eat but next time, you’re all mine!”
you shook your head in sarcasm, he took of his jacket and unbuttoned his white shirt a couple of buttons down, and took off his shoes. He adjusted himself on your couch, and laid there with his eyes closed taking in the aroma therapy essential oils diffuser thats going around your room.
you look at him, now realizing that he’s here strangely. Nick stops by late nights most weekends or if it’s a weekday he’ll let you know earlier in the day if he’s stopping by, but it’s currently a Tuesday at 12:36 am.
“hey Nick?”
he hummed in response, most likely getting sleepy
“not to sound rude or anything.. but why are you here? It’s late on a Tuesday night, shouldn’t you be at your place?”
He opened one eye and looked over at you
“do you not want me here?” He said a bit suspicious
“oh god, no like yeah I do, but I just realized what day it was and you know you usually let me know when you’re coming over and it’s usually weekends you spend the night with me, I just found it odd you came to visit me tonight” “I love it when you’re here really”
you finally finished your ramen and took it towards the couch where Nick was, and started eating as you waited for a response.
he was hesitant in his answer, he seemed stressed and frustrated.
“today we had a tough case.. a rape case..”
you look at him attentively, making sure you are hearing him and that he has your fullest attention.
you nod in continuous
“and well… it’s about a 8 year old girl who’s after school teacher has been acting inappropriately with her.. you know like touching her where she shouldn’t be touched”
“oh my god” was what you let out
“yeah, and her home life isn’t easy, this one was a bit tough to work on dude to how young and bright this little girl is. I hate to see anyone take it away from her”
you put your ramen down and get close to him, caressing his hand.
“and being here.. with you just brings me peace. All is perfect here, so sorry i came unexpected but i really needed to see you”
you smiled at him
“awe baby, you know you are always welcomed here, I love having you here, never goes a day where I don’t miss you”
you make him look at you and caress his cheek, looking so attentively at his eyes, leaning in and kissing him so gracefully.
he takes you in, and guides a hand on your neck. You move to his lap and continue to kiss him, sucking on each others lips, and you slightly grinding on him
he groans a bit and you continue to bit his lip. You pull away with his lip in between your teeth and stare at him and run a finger across his now plumped lips
“thank you for coming over”
“thank you for having me”

huh… that’s one hell of a unique craving, you know” with Barba please:)
"Do you have a bottle of sriracha stowed away in your work bag?" Rafael questioned warily over dinner at Forlini's. He was late to dinner and you decided to order ahead. Your bag was open and he could recognize the green tip from miles away.
Your eyes narrow. "Is there a problem? It's a craving."
"The fetus who is the size of a kumquat likes you putting sriracha on everything you eat?"
You stab a piece of food (covered in sriracha) with a fork. "Oh, you mean the parasite who is inhabiting my body and draining me of my own vitamins and minerals so that it can grow - the parasite that is the result of you knocking me up?"
"Don't call our baby a parasite, amor."
"Don't give me a hard time about my cravings unless you want to die," you hiss in return. "I am the size of a duplex, have to pee every 5 seconds, and am on a hormonal rollercoaster, thanks to you."
"It's just one hell of a unique craving." There's a pause, and then Rafael continues, "Have you put it on anything... not savory, like ice cream?"
You pause and then quietly reply, "I plead the fifth."
Rafael motions for the waiter. "Cancel my order; I have lost my appetite."

How would the SVU guys react to having a baby daughter with a former one night stand? Like in this scenario, they meet their former lover and a baby girl that resembles them during a rape case? Plus, their former lover refuses to a paternity test.
ohh this is super interesting!
I think Barba and Carisi would use their head, mentally going back and figuring out the timeline. The baby looks just like him and you hadn't been seeing anyone else, so it must be his. You're refusing a paternity test? Saying you don't want them in your life? They're taking you to court.
Amaro and Dodds aren't stupid either, but they'll try to win you over. Get you to admit they're the father, let them help and get involved. All the SVU men are honest and would want to be present fathers.

You Left Me
Warnings— angst, that’s about it! And I did not proofread lol
a/n— I’ve wanted to write for Barba for so long and this popped in my head tonight so I hope it’s good, it’s my first Barba x reader!!
*******
“I’ve got donuts!” You chirped as you strolled into the station, holding the box of donuts up high for everyone to see, though blocking your own view momentarily. Thankfully, you knew your way around well enough that you maneuvered your way to your desk, still holding the box in front of you waiting for someone, anyone, to say something about the donuts— but when no one did, you finally lowered to box to see Amanda, Sony, Olivia… and Rafael staring at you.
Your heart nearly stopped. It had been nearly 3 years since Rafael had left. Left the squad. Left town. Left you.
No call. No text. No nothing. After a nasty case that left everyone confused and devastated, you arrived home to the apartment you had shared with your long time boyfriend, Rafael Barba, for all of his belongings to be gone. Nothing of his left, but a note.
“I love you. I’m sorry.
Rafi”
You were left broken beyond what you thought could ever be repaired. It took a lot of time, a lot of therapy, a lot of “self love” and time off for you to even come close to healing from that. You still weren’t completely healed. You were just on the mend, finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel, thinking that maybe things could be okay again. You were finally finding love towards your job again after spending the last three years being so angry and taking that anger out on every perp you could. Olivia knew what you were going through, thankfully doing her best to hold you together knowing you had no one else to do it for you. She never fired you when you were out of place, she never judged you when you blew up at anyone who looked at you wrong, no, she simply turned you in the direction she knew you needed to go.
And now, the moment your eyes landed on Rafael’s, they quickly diverted from his and found Olivia’s.
You swallowed hard, feeling uncomfortable with everyone’s eyes on you and the way silence filled the room. You dropped the box of donuts harshly on your desk and cleared your throat, running your hand through your hair, something you did often when nervous.
“Um, I can’t… this isn’t..” you stuttered, shaking your head, “I’m not doing this here.” You stated, turning and making your way into the break room, away from the wandering eyes, knowing Rafael would follow you.
The air felt thick around you, your skin hot and wet. You almost didn’t want to believe he was really here, that this was really happening. Why? Why now? After all this time? After all these years you had to spend healing the parts of you that he broke? Why now?
You felt the presence as someone entered the room, and it was all too familiar even after three years. Your ps were currently pressed against the counter, your body hunched forward.
“Close the door, please.” You demanded, quietly. You knew you weren’t going to be able to keep your temper under control when the two of you begin talking, and the others really don’t need to hear your dirty laundry.
You listen as he obliges, the door latching giving you the okay to push yourself away from the counter. You still couldn’t bring yourself to face him yet, so there you stood tall, facing away from him, staring at the white kitchen cabinets in the break room filled with only the presence of yourself and the man who was at one point the absolute love of your life.
It was dead silent, as if both of you were terrified to speak first. Or maybe neither of you knew the right thing to say. All you did know was you weren’t going to be the first to speak, and he had no right to make you.
“Can you turn to me?” His voice finally filled the room, filled your ears. “Please?” It was so soft, and still so beautiful, if you weren’t so pissed off at him, you probably wouldn’t buckled there.
“I don’t know if I can face you.” You admitted in a shaky whisper, you weren’t sure if he even heard.
“I know you’re angry, but if you would just listen—“
“Angry?” You cut him off, whipping yourself around so quick that he wasn’t expecting it and took a few steps back out of surprise. “No. I’m not angry, Rafael. I’m furious. I’m livid. I could kill you if it wasn’t illegal and I didn’t love my job.”
You stepped towards him with every one of your words, now chest to chest with him. Your noses were nearly touching as you stared up at him and he down at you, a look of pure despise mixed with betrayal in your eyes.
You stayed like this for a moment, almost threatening him to move away from you. When he didn’t, you finally backed off and put space between you, shaking your head at him.
“I know that I’ve hurt you y/n.” He states, his eyes remaining on you.
“You left me.” Your voice nearly squeaks in reply, causing Rafael to flinch slightly. “I would’ve done anything for you, Rafi, and you left me.”
“I had no choice!” He finally raises his voice, a hint of his own hurt showing. “I couldn’t make you give up the job that you worked so damn hard for all because I did what I did? I wasn’t going to make you pack up your life and come with me all because of a screwed up case! Don’t you get any of that? I was trying to spare you. I was trying to give you another chance at this beautiful life you built. I wasn’t going to make you follow me. I would never do that to you. Not because of my poor choices.”
You stared at him for a moment in disbelief, as if the last nearly decade you guys had spent together he truly had never heard a word you had ever said to him. Yes, you could see he was looking at your best interest, but he failed, miserably, at seeing what YOU would have wanted. What YOU would have thought was best.
“I would have gave up my entire life for you. My career, my home? Those are just things to me. You knew this.” You spoke slowly and clearly to him, making sure he understood you. “There was nothing else in this world I wanted more than to be with you, wherever you were, wherever you would go. I would have been there.” Your eyes stared directly into his, holding contact for a moment while he thought over what you just said. “But you took that choice from me when you left me here.”
Turning away from him now, you took a deep breath almost feeling free, finally getting that off your chest to him. He took that choice from you. He thought he knew what was best for you, and that’s what really hurt.
“And you didn’t even give me the courtesy of a phone call or… or a goddamn text message.” You laughed harshly. “No, I got to find out from a note Rafi! A note, and all your shit gone from our apartment! But hey, thanks for paying the rest of that year’s rent. You really did me a favor there.” You sarcastically joked, rolling your eyes.
All Rafael could do was stand there, thinking over your words again and again. He really did think he was doing what was best for you. That’s all he wanted, what was best for you. He didn’t want to make you pick your entire life up for him.
“I’m sorry y/n. I only wanted what was best for you. I didn’t think you—“
“No, you didn’t.” You cut him off, nodding in agreement. “You’re right. You didn’t think.”
He just stares at you, his mouth opening to say something but quickly closing on second thought.
You both now, once again, just stares each other down, neither daring to break eye contact. Though, his stare at you is filled with sincerity and warmth while your stare at him is still filled with anger and coldness.
“Do you know what I had to do to pick myself back up from that?” You once again break the silence, referring to his leaving. His eyes quickly meet the floor, almost scared to find out what his disappearance in your life had done to you. “I was in therapy FOUR DAYS a week with Olivia’s freaking shrink for months. Then it was three days a week. Now I’m finally at two days a week so, we’re making progress huh? I was on desk duty for a year because I would beat the living shit out of every perpetrator I could get my hands on. I had like.. four different lawsuits on my hands that, thank god for Olivia and the rest of my squad, they got me out of. I lost a partner to a bullet because my mind was on YOU. I lost the privilege to talk to victims for a year because my mind was on YOU.” His eyes remained on the floor as you flooded him with everything he had caused you to go through. “You left a hole in me, so big, that even three years later Rafi, I’m still working on filling it. All because I would have went with you.”
“So come with me now.”
His words take you back, nearly making you trip over your own feet as you process what the hell he just said. You stare at him, your eyebrows pushed together, questioning if you heard him right. Surely, he didn’t just say that now, after all this, after all this time.
“What?” You whisper, deciding you need to hear him say it again to confirm it.
Rafael pushes himself a few steps towards you now, maybe a foot between the two of you, and looks down at you carefully, and gently repeats himself. “So, come with me now.”
Your mouth drops open in awe, and not the good kind.
“Are you kidding me? Why now? Why now and not then?!” You raise your voice again, feeling the anger once again rise, though he quickly grabs either side of your arms and gives them a small squeeze.
“Please. Just listen to me.” You want to object but instead, you sigh and allow him to continue. “I realize now how wrong I was for not giving you the choice. Y/n, leaving you was the biggest mistake I have ever made in my entire life. A mistake I have been dwelling on since the day I left. But I needed to hear you say, from your own mouth, your own words, that you would’ve came with me. I would’ve never forgiven myself if I forced you to come and you hated it. Please understand that.” You slowly relax at his words, in his touch, feeling slightly more confident that he truly meant well by his actions, though they still weren’t okay. “There’s nothing I love more in this world than you. There’s nothing I want more in this world than you by my side wherever I go. And if you still want that, so do I.”
He lets his jabs gently run up and down your arms, in a familiar way he used to years before, and God it felt so good. Your eyes flutter shut as you replay his words in your mind, your stomach turning in all which ways making you almost nauseous. You’re not ever sure how to feel at this point, you don’t even know what to say or how to respond.
Maybe it was instinct, or maybe it was just so natural, but you found yourself leaning into him and allowing him to hold you. He was careful not to overstep any boundaries you may have put up, only holding onto the sides of your arms and allowing you to rest into him as you pleased, your head lying against his chest. You felt his chin finally rest on the top of your head after some moments, like he wasn’t sure if you’d allow him to or not.
Here, like this, you guys stayed for some minutes in silent. You had no idea what to do, or what to feel. All you did know was in this moment, it was the most whole you have felt in three years, since before the day Rafael left you. It might seem silly, or cheesy or cliche, but you really would have given up your entire life for this man. He was your everything. He treated you with the utmost respect, kindness, love, he treasured you. You guys had a good thing going. And you had no one else. Sure, you had your squad and they were the closest to a “family” you were going to get, but Rafael was the one.
“I have to get going mi amor.” Rafael finally pulls himself away, your heart skipping a beat at his use of Spanish, something you haven’t heard in so long and god, something you have missed. He looks down at you, you quickly squeeze your eyes shut to hold back the tears that suddenly tried to push themselves out, then blink a few times before looking up and meeting his eyes. “There’s that case, with the veteran and his daughter, Nydia.” You nod, knowing which he’s talking about before realizing he must be going against Carisi. Rafael notices your realization and a small smirk grows on his lips. “Yeah” he confirms. You clear your throat and nod. “We can talk later, if that’s okay?”
You nod again as he back away towards the door, watching him carefully but staying where you are.
He stops before he leaves and looks back at you one last time, meeting your eyes, “just think about it, okay?”

Falling
Rafael Barba Imagine
This is a one-shot request from @choosejoyangel (for some reason it’s not letting me tag you.) with the prompt “There’s a leaf in your hair”
I hope you like it!
I did try to keep it gender neutral, but I didn’t edit this so it may not be 100% This is now gender neutral once I got a chance to edit it.
"Detective...this way." The officer led you deep into the woods as you absentmindedly put your hand on your gun. Under normal circumstances you would never let anyone lead you into the woods alone. Before becoming an SVU Detective you would have jokingly asked if he was taking you to where they buried the bodies. Here in the now? This officer was leading you to exactly where they buried the bodies.
It seemed like you had been walking for hours, perhaps it was because you knew exactly what you were being led to. You took a deep breath when you saw the clearing coming closer, wishing you'd be in the safety of the trees just a little bit longer. The scene you came upon was chaotic.
There were 12 graves that had been dug up. 12 young women buried in a perfect circle. The number meant something to the killer, you just weren't sure what that was yet. As you walked over to the grave that seemed the freshest, you took a look under the sheet and felt like you had gotten the wind knocked out of you. Another girl that you couldn't save.
It was a story you had heard too many times. She had been in and out of the system as a child. Father was gunned down, mother in and out of prison. She had been turned out and trafficked at 15. You had managed to save her from that horrible fate. She had stayed in touch. You had cheered her on as she got her GED and was now in Community College. She had been one that had truly gotten out.
Yet, it didn't seem that they ever really got out. There was a desperation that clung to them that made them easy prey. This young woman's desperation attracted a different kind of predator. One that threw you away when he was done with you. You hadn't heard from her in a month and so you went looking for her and her apartment was empty. Her friends hadn't seen her. She had died scared and alone, of that you were sure. At least the girls here were together when they were laid to rest.
You had become desensitized to many things. This job did that to you. You can't go day in and day out seeing the worst humanity has to offer without developing an apathetic sheild. This case seemed to find the tiny crack in yours and threatened to take the whole thing down.
"I told you not to come." Amaro came over to you. You were squatting down next to her body, pinching the bridge of your nose. He had been the first detective on the scene. Someone had been making their way through, saw what looked like a fresh grave and had alerted police and down the line it went until it was handed over to SVU. You had heard what was found, Nick had told you they had enough hands on deck and that he would send over any tips for you to follow up on. You were possibly more stubborn than he was.
"I had to. I had to see her." Amaro helped you to stand up.
"Listen, we have it covered here. CSU is doing their thing. Why don't you go update Barba with what we found." You nodded, wrapping your arms around yourself as you headed out of the scene, you didn't have it in you to stay there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you got to the ADA's office, his door was open and Carmen wasn't at her desk so you knocked on the open door as you walked in to announce your arrival. Barba, by far, had been the best prosecutor you'd ever worked with. His sarcasm had definitely endeared him to you. He was a great verbal sparring partner. You would rather die than admit you had feelings for him. Feeling anything opened up the door to let in all of the feelings, so you stuffed that down with the rest of them.
"Detective?" He looked you up and down, he knew something was off. You rarely ever knocked on his door, you just walked in like you owned the place. Carmen had stopped trying to stop you, mostly because he didn't want her to stop you. You looked at him but didn't say anything. He stood up, brow furrowed as he walked over to you.
"Did you take a jump in the leaves on your way over? I'm sure whoever rakes them up is thrilled to have to do it again."
"What?" You hadn't heard a word he had said. He reached his hand up and pulled something gently out of your hair.
"There was a leaf in your hair, and I made a really lame attempt at a joke..." his voice trailed off. Something wasn't just off, something was wrong.
"I don't think I can do this anymore." He watched as your eyes filled with tears, which was alarming because he had never seen you tear up over anything. He shut his office door and led you over to the couch by your arm to sit down.
"Can't do what anymore?"
"This job. I mean what is the point? Do we every really save anyone? There is just one more depraved monster lurking behind the one we just took down. No one is safe. Safety is a lie we tell ourselves to get out the door in the morning. There are so many terrible things in this world, why do we bother fighting?" He blinked a few times, trying to think of what he should say next. This was not you.
"You can't save everyone. You know that, we all know that. But to say you don't ever really save anyone? You know that isn't true. You help take some of the worst examples of humanity off the streets. You may not always save the initial victim, but you save countless from becoming them." He was begging you to hear him. You wiped an almost escapes tear from the corner of your eye.
"So they can just be annihilated by another monster."
"What happened?" He urged for more information. You closed your eyes as you described the scene. A perfect formation of 12 graves with correlating bodies covered right next to them. CSU combing the scene for any shred of evidence. Dogs barking in the background as they searched for any other possible burial grounds. You saved her for last. He remembered her, of course he did. You had worked so hard with her to prep for trial, getting her through withdrawals from the drugs she used to self medicate, getting her set up with a real chance at a future. He didn't know what it was about this particular victim. You typically kept them at arms length. You were excellent with dealing with victims, helping them, but you never really let them in. You had clear boundaries. You didn't let them touch your life, except this one.
"When I talked to her last, she had made Dean's list. She was so excited. We were going to make plans for lunch or dinner, but then another case came that consumed me. When I finally realized how long it had been since I had heard from her, I tried calling. I went to her apartment, her landlord let me in and I could tell she hadn't been there in a while. You can always tell, you know? There was a stillness. The friends she had made hadn't heard from her or seen her. I went to the restaurant where she waits tables and there had been some guy that came in just to see her. Her made her uncomfortable, from what they said, but nothing she couldn't handle. Then she stopped showing up. Raf, I thought she got hooked on drugs again. I should have known better."
He caught the slip. You never called him Raf at work. Only if they happened to be getting a drink or something to eat, when they talked about anything other than what they had to deal with at work.
"How could you have known? We both know the chances of relapsing. Anyone else would go that route first."
"It's been a month since I spoke to her. What if there is no evidence?"
"Don't do this to yourself. This is not your fault. We will find him. Someone with that many victims? There will be something once they start getting IDs."
"I try so hard to not let this all get to me. It's gut wrenching, every day. I don't know how not to feel this anymore. I don't think there is much more room in Pandora's box." He studied your profile for a moment, brushing his knuckle over your cheek. When you didn't flinch away he put his arm around you and you turned into him.
"You can't block out every feeling and you certainly cannot stuff them down. They always come back to the surface, when you need them the least. Worst of all, you push out any good feelings too." The warmth of him was soothing. After that scene, you didn't know if you would ever feel warm again. You let the scent of his cologne invade your senses soothing you.
"I know." You finally acquiesced. "I've blocked out something really good too." You wanted him to take you away from all of this. Maybe keeping him outside of that cracked armor was a mistake.
"You can grieve her, but you can't let it consume you. I know that you cared about her, but it's not on you." Your body deflated against him. A few tears fell from your eyes and onto his hand. "Hey...hey..." he turned more towards you and tilted your head so he could see your face. He wiped your tears away. "We will find whoever did this and I will put him away for the rest of his life, okay?" She nodded.
"I need to get back to the precinct and see if there are any updates." He helped you stand up.
"Meet me later? The usual?" It just hit you that you had a usual. You nodded. He was still holding onto you from helping you up. He pulled you into a hug. You stood there for a moment escaping in him for just a little bit longer before slowly pulling yourself from his arms.
"Yeah, that would nice. I'll let you know if I hear anything in the meantime." He nodded and didn't take his eyes off of you as you walked out of his office.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You had gone home and showered. Liv had made you leave early. They had a metric ton of evidence to process. She had been there before. Every once in a while, a victim gets under your skin.
You had changed into your favorite outfit, wanting to feel comfortable in your own skin. When you walked into the restaurant, he was already there, typing furiously on his cellphone with a scotch next to him. You stopped and just watched him for a moment. He must have felt your eyes on him because he looked up and gave you a smile. You felt yourself smile back at him and went and sat down, your favorite drink waiting for you.
"Well look at you." It felt like his eyes were burning through you. "Feeling a little better?" You nodded.
"You know Liv. I swear she stays in therapy so she can therapize the rest of us." He laughed.
"You're probably right. The Sergeant is a wise one. She's done it for me a few times too."
"I find that hard to believe Counselor. Don't you have the answer to everything?" You teased. Being with him just made things better. He made the emptiness inside you disappear. His eyes twinkled a little when he took a sip of his scotch, a smile pulling at his lips.
"Careful Detective, sounds like you're admitting I know everything." You rolled your eyes at him. He had put away his phone to put his focus on you. His arm was stretched out across the table. You took a long sip of your drink and then placed your hand near his so your fingers brushed he immediately took a hold of your hand and brushed his thumb over your knuckles. When you didn't pull away again, he spoke again.
"Do you want to know what she's been helping me with?" The intensity of his look left you speechless, so you nodded.
"How to get the person I love to open themselves up to me because I am pretty confident they feel the same." His eyes were locked on yours, boldness radiating from him.
"And what..." you cleared your throat. "What did she say?" Your voice went up awkwardly at the end.
"That I should stop being stupid and postponing joy because life is too short. Also to make sure I disclose. She was very adamant about that." You felt your mouth go completely dry. His fingers laced with yours. "What do you think of Liv's advice."
"It's um...good advice." What happened today, was eye opening to you. You needed more than just your job. You were walking through life numb and you didn't want to be that person anymore.
"Are you just going to leave me hanging?" His hand, still laced in yours, his thumb rubbing acrossed a small patch of skin sent electricity through your body.
"I...I have been living my life half alive going through the motions to keep myself numb. The only time I ever feel whole is when I'm with you. I look for you, in any room. How do you even have to ask?"
"I need to hear you say it." Your confession had hit him in a profound way, yet he still needed those three words. He watched as you downed the rest of your drink. He wasn't going to push you. He knew you needed some time, it was a big ask, especially having it sprung on you.
"I love you too Rafael, of course I love you too." He released your hand and stood up, which confused you for a moment.
"Are you coming?" He stood, waiting for you to get out of your seat. You nodded and stood up, he grabbed your hand and led you out of the bar. You had essentially been in a relationship without a label. Dinner after a long day. Drinks after a hard case. Late night chats when you couldn't sleep. Texts throughout the day checking in.
You walked in silence, hand in hand. You knew he was leading you to his apartment so you could have the privacy you both craved. Before you knew it, you were outside your door and he was unlocking it.
Once inside, he descended on you. When his lips connected with yours, it was like someone lit a fire inside of you. His hand on the side of your neck, his other hand slipping around your waist, pulling you closer. You had one hand on the knot of his tie, the other weaving into the hairs on the back of his head.
His lips traveled down your jawline and down your neck. His lips slowly trailed back up and then his tongue was snaking back into your mouth. You couldn't believe you waited this long to do this. That you had denied yourself this feeling of being a complete person.
He finally had to break the kiss to catch his breath, wresting his forehead against yours. The hand that was holding his tie slid down his chest and inside his jacket to rest on his back.
"I'm sorry...I just have been wanting to do that for so long. Once I knew, I couldn't hold myself back."
"I wasn't exactly protesting." You saw him smile, his hand running down the side of your body gripping your hip.
"I...I don't want to pressure you." He whispered. You captured his lips in yours again and pulled him flush against you. You felt him groan into your mouth, once you had to catch your breath again, he took your hand. "C'mon..." he pulled you further into his apartment. You knew at that moment you would follow him for the rest of your life. You had wasted enough time.

so tell me - rafael barba x female!detective
character uses she/her pronouns.
warnings: none, just a bit of angst, mentions of being on the job i guess.
*gif is not mine*
The cold Manhattan air bit sharply at YN's cheeks as she hurried out of the precinct, her heart pounding in her chest. Unfortunately for her it hadn't been an uncommon feeling in the recent days, self doubt often creeping in. The weight of the latest case clung to her like a dark cloud, suffocating and relentless; every detail of the victim’s story replayed in her mind like a haunting reel she couldn’t switch off. It was suffocating.
Her steps faltered as she reached the steps outside, glancing up at the starless sky, the city lights trying and failing to pierce the smog. Wrapping her arms firmly around herself, trying to suppress the tremor that wracked through her, she let out a sigh.
Sometimes, I wish I could tell someone everything.
But who could she talk to? It wasn’t just the gruesome details of the job, no - it was the growing cracks in her somehow still intact armor. The moments of self-doubt. The sleepless nights. The way her chest tightened every time she walked into a crime scene and saw the familiar faces of families shattered. The way her heart broke when there was no justice, no matter the victim.
She exhaled sharply, shaking her head. This was the life she had chosen. No room for weakness. No room for vulnerability. She just had to move on.
---
Rafael Barba watched her from the bottom of the steps, his eyes observant.
He had come to drop off some last-minute paperwork for a case but when he saw her standing there, wrapped in her thoughts and the kind of pain he knew all too well, he froze. He wasn't used to seeing such a vulnerable side to Detective YLN, no, this was YN he was seeing - real and raw.
Rafael knew how it felt when the self doubt started creeping in, when the voices told you that you just weren't good enough. He knew how it felt for a case to get stuck in your head, it was devastating. And he, Unfortunately, knew all too well how it felt like a stab to the gut with every scumbag still left walking the streets.
"Detective," he called out softly, his voice carrying over the night.
YN startled slightly, turning to look at him with wide eyes as if she was a deer caught in the headlights. Rafael thought it was adorable. The flicker of surprise quickly vanished, as if she thought she could hide it, replaced by her usual stoic expression. “Barba.” Short and sharp. “What are you doing here?”
He raised the manila folder in his hand, expression matching her own.“Paperwork. The ever-exciting side of law enforcement.”
She huffed a humorless laugh, rubbing her arms for warmth. “Lucky you.”
Rafael climbed the steps slowly, his eyes never leaving her. Her heart beat slightly faster, not enough to startle her but just enough that she felt it and immediately regretted the effect it had on her. “You look like you’re carrying a lot more than just paperwork tonight.”
YN stiffened. “I’m fine.” Of course she wasn't fine but if she was anything she was not a burden.
“Of course you are,” he said dryly, his sharp gaze narrowing. YN was sure she saw a small eye roll, her eyes narrowing. “You’re always fine, aren’t you, Detective?” His fiery eyes met her cold ones, a perfect match as they glared almost lovingly into one another's eyes; both blind enough to not see it.
Her jaw clenched, heart beating a slight bit faster once more. “Don’t start, Barba.”
“Start what?” He took another step closer, lowering his voice. Her heart began even faster, a heat surging through her for a moment and she was truly embarrassed by the effect he had on her. “Start caring? Start noticing when someone is about to snap under the pressure?”
“Back off,” she said tightly, turning away. She couldn't let him see the blush that spread across her cheeks far too willingly nor did she want him to see the hurt that had begun to linger in her eyes.
She should have known better, Rafael wasn’t one to back off easily - especially not when he could see through the cracks in her armor. “You know, you could talk to someone.”
She froze at his words, her back still to him. Her hands curled into fists at her sides, shoulders slightly hunched as she muttered just loud enough for him to hear. “Sometimes I wish I could tell someone everything.”
“So tell me.”
His words hung in the air between them, soft but commanding. They were unexpected and she had to take a moment to process them.
YN turned to face him, slowly, her eyes burning with unshed tears and frustration. It was obvious to Rafael that she needed to get it off her chest but he also knew how stubborn she could be. “You’re not just someone, Rafael.” Her voice came out softer than she'd expected it to.
The use of his first name caught him off guard, but not as much as the raw emotion in her voice nor how much he enjoyed hearing YN say his name in such a soft voice. “And what’s wrong with that?” he asked, his tone gentler to match hers now.
“Everything,” she whispered. “Because if I start talking to you, if I let you in…” Barba was sure her voice broke but he couldn't have been sure. She gently cleared her throat. “If I let you in, don't think I’ll be able to stop.”
Rafael took another step closer, his expression softening, a side to him YN hadn't seen before. “Maybe you don’t have to stop.”
Her breath hitched and, for a moment, she let herself imagine it. Letting someone see her, really see her. But the fear of losing control, of becoming vulnerable, loomed large. She shook her head. “I can’t.” Her voice was barely a whisper now.
He tilted his head, studying her. “Can’t, or won’t?” He wasn't angry, there was a softening of his voice but he was frustrated.
“Both,” she said, her voice barely audible. Her eyes fluttered shut for a moment, her teeth had a loose grip on her bottom lip for just a moment but it was long enough for Barba to catch it.
A long silence stretched between them. The bustling noise of the city seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them standing on the precinct steps. Her heart now pounded in her chest, enough to concern her - maybe it was a heart attack. Well, at least YN wished it was because if it wasn't she would have to face reality.
Rafael finally sighed, running a hand through his hair. “YN, you’re not alone in this. You don’t have to carry it all by yourself.”
Her lips quivered up into a bitter smile, it was now or never. “Is this your way of flirting with me, Counselor?”
Rafael smirked, the tension breaking just a fraction and he was pleased. “If it is, am I doing a terrible job?”
She let out a soft laugh, shaking her head. Tension had seemed to ease, YN feeling ever so slightly better - okay, maybe a lot better. “You’re insufferable.” Her smile was no longer hidden or pushed down.
“Only for you, Detective.” His voice held a teasing lilt, but his eyes remained earnest. “Think about it. If you ever need someone to listen... I’m here.”
YN studied him for a moment, her defenses wavering, she'd let him in ever so slightly and it was terrifying. She nodded once, the tiniest crack in her walls beginning to widen again. “Thanks, Rafael.”
And there it was again, the way she spoke his name and the effect that it had on him. He wanted to quiver and the mere sound of it but he didn't want to give up in this game; it was exciting.
“Anytime,” he replied, his tone sincere though it was hard to hide the real tone wanting to burst out. As she turned to walk away, her shoulders ever so slightly un-hunched, he called after her. “And YN?”
She glanced back over her shoulder, eyebrow raised in questioning.
“You’re not just someone either.”
For the first time that night, a genuine smile tugged at her lips. “Goodnight, Barba.”
He watched her go, watching her stand even more slightly taller, his own heart feeling a little lighter. Maybe, just maybe, they both had found a glimmer of solace in the darkness.

“Oh god,” you muttered shoving your head deeper under the pillow. “I hate life.”
Your mouth was dry and felt like cotton but also a little minty as you tried to work out what happened last night. It all got a little fuzzy around the time Rafael and his friends showed up. But you were sure there was something in there that was embarrassing, something…
“Oh jesus, please tell me that was just a weird ass dream?” you pleaded.
“If you’re talking about last night, then I’m afraid not Chica,” Rafael’s amused voice drifted over you. You groaned in response, burrowing further into the nest you had made in his bed. The events of last night became a little clearer the longer you were awake, you felt your body turn to ice, your stomach dropping as you remembered in detail what you did and said.
“I am so sorry,” you whispered sitting up, turning to look at Rafael, you felt so bad about last night. You couldn’t believe what you had done.
“Why?” Rafael asked moving forwards, sitting down and taking your hand, bringing it to his lips.
“Cause I was meeting your friends for the first time and I was so drunk that I talked about your dick and sex,” you whined eyes watering a little. “And everything else, I must have been so embarrassing.”
“Carino, they thought you were adorable,” he assured you cupping your cheek and stroking under your eye to catch the stray tears. “And believe me they were happy for the material for teasing me.”
“Are you sure?” you asked. Rafael tugged on your hands urging you to move so you were sitting in his lap, legs straddling him and arms fiddling with the buttons on his shirt. His hands ran up and down your sides soothingly.
“Sweetheart, I am so sure,” he nodded, kissing your nose. “You could never do anything that would embarrass me. You were showing affection and being yourself around my friends. That is all I could ask, plus you made such a good snarky remark against Carisi, so there’s that.”
“Rafi,” you smiled feeling a little better about last night. “Promise me you’ll tell me if I made them uncomfortable?”
“Of course,” he agreed. “Do you feel better?”
“About that yes, but I still feel like death warmed up,” you rubbed your head. “Thank you for drinking my margherita.”
“Ah, see I made a good choice,” he tweaked your nose just to hear you giggle. “Alright, do you want to have a shower or some food?”
“Hm, shower, definitely,” you were about to get up but suddenly sat back down your eyes staring at Rafael, studying him.
“Chica?” he asked, brow furrowed unsure what you were doing.
“You said no to sex last night,” you stated
“Of course, you were drunk,”
“Huh,”
“Why?”
“It’s like a low bar, don’t get me wrong but thank you,” you shrugged. “But just for future reference, I would be okay with us fooling around when I’m a little drunk.”
“Noted, let’s have this conversation when you are a little more awake and alive,” he grinned.
“Alright,” you agreed. “But…wanna join me in the shower? I’m not drunk anymore.”
“If I ever say no to that question, it isn’t me and you should call Liv,” Rafael’s grip tightened on your hips holding you to him to stop you from getting up. “First, though I want you to drink some more water.”
“Rafi,”
“No, water and I’ll join you in the shower but that is it,” he tapped you on the nose. “You are hungover and as much as I would like to fuck you in the shower, I don’t think you’re really up to that are you?”
“No,” you pouted. “Though speaking of, did you clean my teeth last night? Whilst my mouth is dry it is minty.”
“Ah, no, you woke up, threw up and then cleaned your teeth while complaining about the light,” Rafael answered. “And then you preceded to do your whole night skin care. Which was not something I thought I would ever see done after a night of drinking.”
“….yeah that sounds like me, sorry should have warned you I tend to do that,” you scratched the back of your neck. “Sorry about throwing up.”
“Chica, it’s fine, you made it to the bathroom,” Rafael kissed your neck nibbling on the skin there.
“Woah buddy, if you don’t want to fuck me you better stop,” you wiggled away from his mouth before groaning a little. “Yeah, I think I need water. My head is trying to kill me.”
Rafael laughed wrapping his arm firmly around your waist as he leaned to grab the water bottle from the side table. Opening it behind your back before bringing it up to your lips, raising an eyebrow when you pursed your lips, face confused.
“Oh, so I can help you drink water when you’re drunk and don’t want to let go of my friend’s hand but now that it is the two of us suddenly it’s weird?” he asked. “Nice Chica.”
“Oh my god, I did that?” you asked.
“You did, and you owe me for that,” he nodded. “It completely ruined my hard arse reputation.”
“I’m sure you can make that back the next time you make a witness cry, or refuse to get a warrant cause they don’t have enough evidence and their “maternal instincts” aren’t enough,”
“Okay I told you I did that in confidence for it to never be mentioned again,”
“You never said off the record,”
“You suck,”
“You like my sucking,”
Rafael rolled his eyes as he brought the water bottle back up to your lips. You eyed it for a second longer before opening your mouth and letting him pour some in before swallowing, repeating the action until you pushed the bottle away.
“Alright, let’s get you in the shower, so you can eat something and take some pain meds,” Rafael said, recapping the bottle and sitting it on the bed beside the two of you. His arm still holding you close on his lap. “Now hold on tight.”
“What?” you were confused until Rafael stood up holding you against him. “Aw, you’re spoiling me.”
“Don’t get use to it,” Rafael warned you walking towards the bathroom. “How’s the light?”
“Hm, hurts a little,” you admitted, eyes squinting against the harshness of the light. Rafael hummed as he sat you on the counter before reaching for the light switch and dimming them.
“Now?”
You merely hummed in response, smiling a little dopily at him. Rafael chuckled in response, pressing a kiss to your temple as he walked past you to the shower, fiddling with taps until it was the temperature you preferred. He made quick work of removing his own clothes before helping you out of yours, pressing kisses to your cheeks, temple and forehead as he did so.
“Want to wash your hair?” he asked carefully running a brush through it to get rid of the knots that appeared overnight. He hummed when you didn’t answer right away, leaning to press a kiss to you should blade. “Carino?”
“Don’t know but that feels nice,” your voice was getting drowsy from the gentle way Rafael brushed your hair, you were always a sucker for anyone who played with your hair and this, surprisingly, was the first time Rafael had brushed your hair.
“It doesn’t feel like it needs a wash, so maybe that can wait for when you’re more human,” Rafael joked reaching for a hair-tie that seemed to live on the bathroom counter. His fingers were gentle as he carefully gathered your hair and tied it into the bun he had seen you wear when you didn’t want your hair to get wet when you showered. “Is that too tight?”
“Not at all, I may have to demand that you play with my hair more often now,” you told him turning around to press a soft kiss to his lips. “I think it may be my favourite thing for you to do.”
“We’ll see,” he said, but he knew that he would never be able to deny you that request. Turns out he rather liked being able to play with your hair and brush it for you.
“We both know that means ‘Yes of course, Chica, whenever you want,’” you attempted to mimic his voice, arms wrapping around his shoulders as you pressed your naked bodies together.
“Chica,” Rafael warned, as he grabbed your hands and pulled them away before leading you into the shower. “Behave.”
“Sir, yes sir,” you mocked, attempting to hold a serious look before you broke and giggled at him.
“When you’re feeling better you are going to get it,” Rafael stated, gently turning you around so your whole body was wet before he grabbed the soap and a wash cloth. He switched places with you as he started to lather you, being so gentle with his movements.
“That feels nice, Rafi,” you whispered leaning to kiss him as he turned you around to wash your front. His eyes were soft with an emotion in them that you had never seen before, it caused your stomach to flutter and not in the way it normally does after a night of drinking.
“Good, let’s get you rinsed off,” he smiled. “Do you want to spend the day in bed?”
“Only if you are with me,” you prompted, taking the wash cloth and soap from him. “Can I wash you?”
“Maybe next time,” Rafael promised you switching places with you again to rinse off the soap. “Let’s get you dried and in bed, which yes I will join you, after I have made you some food.”
“Ooh, some greasy?” you asked.
“Bacon and egg sandwich with hashbrowns?”
“Perfect, with a cup of tea?”
“Of course, Chica, this is technically your breakfast, I know you need tea with breakfast,”
“You know me so well,” you grinned following him out of the shower.
Later in the day
“So, how are you feeling now?” Rafael asked running his hand through your hair. You smiled happily up at him, relaxing more against his lap. The two of you stayed in bed all day after your shower together, Rafael cuddling you at first and then he switched to sitting up with you laying on his lap while he read over some case notes.
“Much, thank you for looking after me,” you nodded.
“Of course, my darling,” he bent down to press a kiss to your forehead, gently stroking your cheek, before tweaking your nose.
“Normally, on our girls nights out we don’t get quite as drunk as we did,” you moaned.
“Oh?” Rafael sat his case file on the bed side table. “You young girls don’t go wild every other night?”
“Rafi, you read my dating profile, I’m a nerdy little librarian, all four of us are nerdy,” you rolled your eyes. “I prefer a night in. Last night was special it had been over four months since we were all able to meet up.”
“I know but you are still young,” he shrugged. Your eyes narrowed as you studied the way his face was twitching a little. “If you need to spend more time with your friends so you can meet up more-”
“Wait, wait, wait,” you interrupted him sitting up so you could look at him properly. “The only reason we weren’t able to meet up for nearly four months was because Shannon was out of the country visiting some of her family and Courtney had been out of state for work. And that is the second time you have said I’m young in a short time span. Rafi, does our difference in age bother you?”
“No,” Rafael denied, but he refused to look at you as he shifted sitting on the edge of the bed rubbing his face. He had hoped this might never come up between the two of you but he forgot that you were annoying observant, well, annoyingly only when you turned it on him. Adorable when it was any other time.
“Really, cause it seems a little like maybe it does,” you insisted. “Rafi, why haven’t you said anything before?”
“Because I guess I never realised until last night when I meet your friends,” he said. “And a part of me worried that I was keeping you from being with your friends and that maybe I was a little old for you.”
“Absolutely not,” you assured him, climbing onto his lap grabbing his face between your hands to ensure he couldn’t look away from you. “You listen to me right now Rafael Barba. You are not too old for me, me and my friends rarely get drunk like that, we all actually prefer hanging out at one of our places, checking out a museum or just getting a nice dinner. We occasionally get drunk like that but it is rare. You are not keeping me from my friends, now that Courtney and Shannon are back in town, we will be meeting up like we normally do. Understand?”
“Chica,” Rafael whispered his hands reaching up to cover yours, the light in his eyes coming back.
“Do you understand?” you repeated forcibly. “I need an answer bub, I need to be sure that you understand that the gap in our ages is not an issue, my friends adore you.”
“Yes, Carino I understand,” he nodded leaning forward to kiss you. “Thank you, sweetheart.”
“Anytime, babe,” you nuzzled your nose against his. “Please tell me if you start thinking like that again. Because I can tell you how you blow all other men out the water, my girls said their first times never ended with them having orgasms, well cept for Courtney but she had her first time with a woman so.”
“Really?” he asked, hands moving down to grab your hips.
“Yep,” you hummed popping the ‘p’. “So, I’m never letting you go, for the sex alone. God only knows if I could find another man who can make me orgasm from finger fucking me.”
“Good to know you aren’t superficial at all Chica,” Rafael squeezed your hips teasingly.
“I mean obviously I’m not letting you go because you’re-”
“Gorgeous, charming, sarcastic and incredibly intelligent?” he asked.
“Did…I say that last night?”
“Correct,” he nodded. “You also said I was really good in bed so.”
“God,” you groaned resting your head against his shoulder. “I’m never gonna be able to see your friends ever again.”
“Well, I mean at least you whispered your attempt at bribing me to give you your drink back,” Rafael pointed out dryly, causing you to lift your head to stare at him blankly.
“That’s something I suppose,” you agreed, wrapping your arms around his shoulders, running your fingers through his hair.
He hummed contently at your actions, letting his head fall to rest on your chest. You pressed a kiss to the top of his head, settling more firmly in his lap. The memory of what you whispered to him coming back, you couldn’t believe you said that even if no-one else was able to hear it. Though, the thought of doing that did make you excited, it turns out not even being hungover was enough to keep your desire for him down. You wiggled a little on his lap, feeling his dick underneath you didn’t help. You whimpered as you grew a little wet. Rafael’s arms tightened around you as you continued to wiggle in his lap.
“Want another shower?” Rafael asked.
“A shower?” now you were just confused…well, confused and horny but mostly confused.
“You’re feeling better,” he started, his hands holding you firmly in his lap. “And if you still want to, I would like to join you in that shower.”
“Hmm, I suppose I could be persuaded to have another shower,” you sighed, moving to get up from his lap.
“Oh, no, stay right there,” Rafael clicked his tongue, his hands holding your hips tightly to keep you firmly in his lap. Smirking when you looked at him confused. In one smooth motion he stood up holding you to him.
“Rafi!” you squeaked grabbing hold of his shoulders, legs wrapping around his waist as one of his hands moved to hold your ass, squeezing it teasingly as he walked to the bathroom. “Thought you said not to get use to this.”
“Hm, I thought this was an excellent way to get you to the bathroom so I can have my way with you,” he shrugged. “Now, what was it you said to me last night? Come on bub, let’s go.”
“Rafi,” you giggled, before grinning at him, words bubbling up inside but you held them in. Instead, you nuzzled into his neck, kissing and nibbling at the skin.
“Shit, Chica stop it,” he groused. “I could drop you.”
“Oh, now why would you ever do that?” you asked licking up along his neck.
“Oh, now you’re going to get it woman,” he growled, a dark promise in his voice that caused you to shiver in delight. Both of his hands grabbing your arse and squeezing.
“Maybe after this shower, we could do what I suggested last night?” you proposed.
“I have a question about that, what was with the vest?” Rafael asked sitting you on the counter, hands trailing along your thighs.
“I saw how you got one time I tried it on,” you raised an eyebrow. “It’s the same look you get in your eyes when I wear lingerie.”
“Hm, wear my blue and silver one,”
“Yes sir,” you reached out to start undoing his shirt. “But…how about I suck you off in the shower first?”
“Twist my arm, Chica,” he grinned, hands tugging your panties down as you finished with his shirt, pushing it off his shoulder and dragging your fingers back up his torso scratching over his nipples to get that little noise out of him.
His fingers trailed back up your thighs and under the shirt you were wearing as he started sucking kisses along your neck, he thought it was a little bare and that just had to change. You gasped, wrapping your legs around his waist to pull him closer, you could feel the outline of his cock against you as he rolled his hips.
“Rafi,” you moaned. “I thought I was meant to-”
“We’re not in the shower yet, Chica,” he whispered into your ear before he bit your lope gently. “I think I want you to cum on my fingers first.” Leaning back, he smirked down at you, the fingers that were gripping your thighs squeezed once before one hand inched up closer to your pussy. “So, be good and spread those legs a little more for me.”
“Aw, don’t you have enough room?” you teased before gasping as Rafael’s thumb pressed down on your clit without warning. “Rafi!”
“I suppose I could make you cum just from this but I really want to fuck you with my fingers,” he growled lowly. “Don’t you want to feel my fingers inside you?” He moved his thumb in a circular motion alternating between pressing down and barely any pressure, his other hand slipped up under your shirt to tease along the underside of your breast. “Come one, Carino, don’t you want my fingers inside you?”
“Yes, fuck yes,” you nodded.
“Then spread your legs,” he ordered. You unwrapped your legs from around his waist, opening them wide biting your lip at the look in Rafael’s eyes. It didn’t matter how many times you saw it; it still took your breath away to see him look so hungrily at you. “Good. Girl.”
Rafael kissed you as he slowly teased you by pressing the tips of two of his fingers into you before taking them out and then inserting them again just a little further each time. Each time he pulled them out he stroked them upwards and rubbed at your clit with his thumb drawing out whines and gasps from you in between kisses. He knew exactly how to work you; he could bring you to the edge but never let you tip over. He left his fingers inside, stroking them against your walls drawing out your pleasure as he removed his thumb from your clit.
“Rafi,” you moaned leaning back from him your hips rolling as much as they could.
“You know, I have heard that orgasms are great for hangovers,” Rafael grunted nibbling on your bottom lip.
“That is true,” you whimpered a little, one of your legs moving to curl around his waist as your hands scratched at his back when his thumb pressed down on your clit rubbing it in circular movements again. “Ah, fuck!” tears started to form in your eyes as the pleasure built.
“That’s it, Chica,” Rafael encouraged. “Cum for me baby. You can do it, be a good girl and cum on my fingers.” Your walls clenched as your orgasm hit you, clamping down on his fingers. Your hips twitched as you clutched at Rafael tightly as you let your high run through you.
“Rafi,” you whined as his fingers continued to stroke you. He pressed a kiss to your lips, his tongue swiping into your mouth.
“Hm, fuck I love feeling you cum on my fingers,” Rafael whispered against your lips, slowly pulling his fingers out. He made sure your eyes were focused and on him when he put them in his mouth and sucked the wetness that clung to them. “Fuck you taste so good.”
“Come here,” you dragged him back to your lips, tongue licking into his mouth tasting yourself on his tongue as they twined together. “Fuck Rafi. You’re a menace.”
“Pay back,” he murmured before tugging your bottom lip between his, letting it go so he could kiss along your jaw and down your neck to make another mark. “And I’ve been holding back since last night.”
You tilted your neck to the side allowing him more access to your neck as your other leg wrapped around his waist joining the other squeezing him tight. Your hands lightly running over the marks you left on his back, grinning a little at the shiver that ran through him.
“Rafi, I need you,” you whispered, running one of your hands up into his hair and tugging humming at the groan it pulled from him.
“Hmm, but I’m not done yet,” he pulled back lips pouting a little.
“You keep going at my neck like that and it’ll look like I was mauled,” you laughed, tapping his lips. “Plus, I need to get your cock in my mouth like now so…”
“Only if afterwards, I can take my time eating you out,” Rafael countered.
“You drive a hard bargain Mr Lawyer,” you rolled your eyes. “But I guess I can live with that.”
Rafael helped you down off the counter, using that as an opportunity to squeeze your arse and thighs again, sighing a little happily. His hands moved upwards, pulling the shirt up as he went, making a slight detour to lightly squeeze your breasts before throwing the shirt into the laundry basket. His hands trailed down your body again before you stepped away from him, backing towards the shower, reaching out blindly to turn it on.
“Boxers off mister,” you pointed. “Then you can get back to copping a feel.”
“A little hard to cop a feel while you’re on your knees,” he complained. “Why don’t you help me take my boxers off and I can cop a feel.”
“Always a lawyer,” you chuckled stepping towards him, before grinning cheekily and backing towards the shower again and crooking a finger at him. “Come on bub, boxers off or you won’t get to take your time eating me out.”
“I should hire you as my second chair,” he muttered as he pushed down his boxers before joining you under you under the warm spray of the shower. “Let you turn those amazingly, annoying negotiation skills on the defence. I’ll never have to go to trial again.”
“I don’t think that’ll happen,” you warned him.
“Oh, I don’t know, you got Liv to drink a shot by looking at her,” he shrugged. “I think you could get Buchan to agree to a deal.”
“Buchan…oh that big fella who is an absolute piece of shit?” you asked turning Rafael around so he was under the spray.
“That’s the one,” he nodded, hands pushing your hair away from your face, before they started stroking down your back. “Chica!” he whined as you dropped to your knees taking away his ability to touch you anywhere other than your head.
“I’m about to suck your cock and you’re whining?” you raised an eyebrow at him. “Got to say, I don’t think there are many men out there that would complain about getting their dick sucked.”
“That’s because those men are idiots and don’t know how to appreciate a gorgeous woman in-front of them,” he defended himself. “And dios do I appreciate you, with your-.”
You ignored his statements as you leaned closer to press a kiss to the head of his dick, causing him to cut off his statement with a curse. You looked up at him, grinning as you pressed kisses along the length of his cock, before licking up along the vein before you took it into your mouth. Swallowing around it as you took it down all the way to the root. Rafael wasn’t the only one who learnt how to play your body. Your hands held onto his thighs for balance as you moved up and down, swirling your tongue around the head, dipping into the slit before you swallowed it back down. This time only taking a small part each time you went down.
“Fuck,” Rafael moaned. “You’re so good with your mouth Chica.” Tangling one of his hands into your hair he tugged on it as you moved, his hips lightly thrusting to match your movements. “That’s it, you’re taking me so well.” Pulling all the way off, you smirked up at him as you trailed kisses along his length again.
“Bet you’re glad I talked you into this, huh?” you asked him as you pressed a kiss to his balls, quickly licking them before moving suck on his tip again, tasting some of the precum that was dripping from it.
“Hm, I think I would prefer this if I could be eating you out at the same time,” he mused.
“You’re impossible,” you sighed, before going back to sucking his dick.
One of your hands reaching to gently squeeze his balls, before you gently reached behind to stroke at the skin there. Rafael slumped against the wall the water hitting his chest and falling down to you, his eyes watching you burned with a hunger that he knew would never been fully satisfied. His hand continued to tug on your wet hair, encouraging you to take him all the way down again and hold him in your throat, swallowing around his thick length.
“Carino, look at you,” his whispered in awe, his other hand stroking along your cheek before rubbing along your bottom lip, his thumb pushing in a little beside his cock before retreating. “Fuck you look gorgeous with your mouth so full.”
Your body warmed at the words coming from his mouth. You hadn’t really heard him dirty talk before, it was doing things to you. Your pussy was throbbing in need, suddenly you wished this was happening in a bed so you could feel his tongue inside you. Although, if that was happening you wouldn’t be seeing this side of him. You swallowed once more around him before pulling off so just his tip was inside your mouth.
“Fuck, gorgeous I am close,” he told you, pulling your hair a little rougher. “You going to swallow for me?”
You whimpered in response, focusing on his slit as you moved your hand back more, lightly rubbing it over his hole. The first time you did it was a slight accident but when you noticed how Rafael reacted you made sure to do it more often. You even thought about brining up an idea you had been having for a while but you weren’t really sure how to go about it. But for now, it was a good way to get him even more turned on as he got closer to finishing.
“Ah shit, close,” he whimpered, hips thrusting a little more as he got close. You hummed around his cock before you felt his orgasm fill your mouth, you moaned at the taste as you swallowed it down. Licking at the head as you pulled off to catch any stray drops.
“Not to copy you, babe but, fuck you taste good,” you stated pressing one last kiss on the head of his cock before an idea hit you. You ignored the way he tugged on your hair to try and get you to stand up instead you started kissing along the top of his right thigh. Biting at the skin, sucking on it to leave a mark, as you moved along it to his hip bone.
“And you’re a menace,” he moaned. “Come on stand up, please.”
“Aw, you’re begging?” you asked teasingly as you marked up his hip bone and then left a path of kisses along his stomach to his other hip bone to leave more markings. “And at least these can be hidden.”
“You like my markings,” he pointed out finally managing to get you to stand up as he pressed lightly against one of the markings on your neck.
“Not as much as you do,” you said stroking your hands up his stomach to wrap around his shoulders. Rafael grumbled a little as his hands found their way to your arse again, the grumbles turning to happy little hums. “You’re an easy man to please, you know that?”
“Hm, maybe,” he shrugged. “But it’s not like it could be used against me.”
“Really?” you asked as you attempted to step out of the shower but his hands tightened their grip on you tugging you against him under the stream. “Well, that’s rude.”
“Aw, don’t you like that I can hold you against me?”
“You know I enjoy how strong you are,” you leaned up to kiss him. “Just like I know how much you enjoy my arse, my thighs and my pussy.”
