MASTERLIST TLOU
Today was Joel's birthday, like always he didn't want anyone making a fuss about it. Just because he was a year older didn't mean he had to celebrate getting closer to his death date. What he didn't realise though, was his daughter Sarah and his new found lover, Y/n, had decided to surprise him with breakfast.
The noise of pots and pans clashing against each other stirred Joel awake, of all days he woke up before his alarm it just had to be his birthday. Joel pulled himself out of bed and went to get changed, he had work to do today and he knew Tommy was gonna be on his ass all day if he was late.
Making his way downstairs, he heard soft chatter in the kitchen. The sound of his two girls brought a smile to his face, god he was so lucky to have them in his life. Once he entered the kitchen, the scene in front of him made him stare in awe. Sarah and Y/n were wearing matching aprons, egg shells spread across the counter. The two girls were giggling about god know what but the sight in front of Joel made his heart swarm with warmth.
Sarah was the first to notice her dad stood near the dining table, she ran over to him and tackled the older male into a hug. "Happy birthday! How old are you now?" Joel could hear the slight sarcasm lacing her words as she asked him the question. He put a hand over his chest and pulled the most exaggerated shocked expression he could do. "You don't know how old I am?" Laughter erupted from the pair, gaining the attention of the younger woman, who was surprisingly still whisking the eggs.
Y/n turned towards the culprits making so much noise, a soft smile etched on her lips. Her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail, egg yolk smeared across her apron. Y/n made her way over to Joel, her arms wrapped themselves around his neck as she pulled her body flush against his own. A light kiss placed against his lips made Joel feel giddy, he felt young again whenever she was around him.
Once everyone had settled down, Y/n continued to make breakfast. A cup of coffee was placed beside the stove where she was frying the eggs. She turned to look at her partner and gave him a light peck on the cheek as a way to show her gratitude. Once the food was done, Y/n started to plate it up and hand them out to Sarah and Joel. She made sure to keep some for Tommy when he came round to get Joel before they headed to work together.
The trio were sat at the dining table, Y/n zoning in and out of the conversation Joel and Sarah were having. The front door slamming shook her out of her trance, Tommy, Joel's younger brother, greeted the family as he walked over to the kitchen. "Where's my food? Did you guys forget about me?" Joel rolled his eyes at his younger brother, he knew his brother was joking but siblings could be annoying sometimes.
Y/n pointed towards the fridge, the scrambled eggs were definitely cold by now but it beats them being left on the counter for anything to happen to them. Tommy nodded at the young woman, mumbling a soft thank you. He contemplated heating them up or to just eat them the way they were, he decided on the latter. Once everyone had finished eating, they all got ready to leave the house. Joel and Tommy got in the truck, preparing to get to work early; not without Joel getting his goodbye kiss from Y/n though, the scene made Tommy and Sarah cringe.
Y/n was on her way back from work, driving towards Sarah's school to pick her up. The two girls had made a plan to go to the watchmaker in downtown Texas to get Joel's watch repaired. He kept it in the top draw of his dresser, it was left untouched for a long time and Sarah and Y/n thought it would be sentimental to get it fixed for him and gift it back as if it were brand new.
Sarah hopped into the passenger seat once Y/n had pulled up. The sound of jets up above shot through the clear sky, Y/n stalled for a second before putting the car in drive. The trip to downtown Texas was longer than usual, traffic seemed to swarm both lanes as the two girls tried to make it to the watchmakers before they closed.
Once they had arrived, Y/n put the car in park and then shut it off. Sarah was the first to get out as she manoeuvred her way to the store, the older female slowly following behind. Everything was going well, the watch was almost repaired when the store owners wife, or so Y/n thought, came rushing out from the back panicking about closing the store early and for the two girls to leave and go home because it wasn't safe. The store owner wrapped everything up as fast as he could, the watch now repaired and tucked safely into a grey box.
Once they had left the store, the door slammed shut and the 'closed' sign now on full display. Y/n shook her head as she unlocked the car for the both of them to get in, things were feeling too odd today and she knew it was upsetting Sarah. The drive back home wasn't as bad as they thought it would be, the traffic had lightened up and they were able to get home safely and without any delays.
Sarah was on the couch watching the TV as Y/n was making dinner, spaghetti and meatballs. She knew it wasn't much but there was barely anything in the house to cook up because Joel forgot to buy the groceries, again. The sound of the front door opening and closing made the young woman jump, she wasn't expecting Joel back this early. Y/n could hear the chatter of Sarah and her father in the living room, she didn't know what she would do with them.
Sarah had fallen asleep on the couch after the trio had eaten dinner and decided to watch a movie, the one Sarah had borrowed from the Adler's a couple days ago. Joel's phone started to ring, he shot an apologetic look at Y/n, she proceeded to wave him off as she went to pick Sarah up to bring her to bed. Once she had tucked the young girl into bed, she made her way downstairs only to be met with Joel putting his boots back on. "What did Tommy do this time?" Y/n knew it had to be something he did, Joel would always get a call at the same time each week and it would be Tommy on the other end.
The look of guilt swimming in Joel's deep brown eyes said the words he couldn't pull himself to say right now, with a sigh Y/n pulled the older male in for a hug and told him to be safe and to make it back home soon. He pecked her lips and then left the house, god if only he knew the world was about to turn to shit.
An hour had passed by and no sign of Joel or Tommy yet, the streets were quite and dark, it was like the whole world had turned the lights off. A bang from the window made Y/n jump, she slowly stepped towards the noise and checked what it was. She saw the Adler's dog Mercy stood on the lawn, the fur on his back pinned straight up, his eyes darting back and forth from the darkness of the street. Y/n went outside and called Mercy over to bring him back to his owners, but he had other plans, Mercy somehow freed himself from his collar and bolted behind the houses.
A shiver ran down Y/n's spine as a low growl like noise sounded from the Adlers house. Without warning, the door slams wide open and Alexandra Adler comes running full speed in Y/n's direction. Lucky she saw it coming from a mile off and started running as fast as she could back into Joel's house. She slammed the door shut and locked it, placing one of the dining chairs under the handle. Y/n shot straight for the stairs and ran into Sarah's room, closing the door behind her as she tried her best to compose herself.
The young Miller was still soundlessly asleep, curled up under her comforter. Y/n shook the girl awake, a finger against her lips signalling Sarah to be quiet. Panic swarmed her eyes, she was scared; of course she was, Joel wasn't here and the only other person with her was a child who was panicking for her life. The mother she always wished to be, kicked in. She held Sarah's face in her hands, the tears already cascading down the young girls cheeks, it broke Y/n's heart; she was not going to let anything happen to Sarah as long as she was here.
Y/n picked up the lamp that was situated on Sarah's bedside table, she turned to the crying girl and hugged her close, she didn't know if this would be the last time she would ever hold her, but what she knew was she would do anything to protect her from any harm. Y/n opened the bedroom door slowly, peaking her head out to check if the coast was clear. She could no longer hear Mrs Adler throwing her body against the front door, that's what probably scared her the most.
Y/n made her way to the top of the stairs and what was waiting at the bottom made a scream rip through the eerily quite house. The old woman's head snapped up and stared Y/n dead in the eyes, a screech sounded from the woman as she descended the stairs. Y/n was thrown to the floor with a thud, Mrs Adler on top of her clawing at her arms. The lamp, which was once in Y/n's hands, was thrown in front of Sarah's bedroom door, Y/n knew if she didn't do something soon she would meet her end. With all her strength, she pulled her legs up to her chest and kicked Mrs Adler off of her, throwing the older woman's body halfway down the stairs.
Rushing over to the lamp she lifted it up just in time for Mrs Adler to get up and run at her head on, and in one swift movement she smashed the porcelain base of the lamp against the old woman's head. She fell down to the floor with a shriek, her body spasming. Hit after hit, every blow to the frail woman's head made blood splatter against Y/n's face and the walls surrounding the pair.
The sound of a truck pulling up in front of the house broke Y/n out of her trance. Sarah had come out of her room mere seconds after Mrs Adler was finally 'dead'. The two girls walked down the stairs, hand in hand as Joel came rushing in, panic evident on his face. The front door was wide open, the door frame splintering. Once his eyes locked on his two girls, he ran over to them, tears pricking his eyes. Joel knew this wasn't the time to do this but he needed to make sure they were both okay and unharmed.
Sarah was unscathed, she was perfectly fine other than obviously being traumatised for the rest of her life. Y/n on the other hand, was covered in scratches and blood, her eyes were glazed; like she wanted to cry but couldn't find the energy to do so. He brought them both to the truck, where Tommy was waiting with his rifle. Y/n and Sarah were sat in the back, Joel in the passenger seat. Sarah was rambling on about something Y/n couldn't hear, it was as if she was trapped underwater, her hearing flowing in and out of tune. She could only make out one thing and that was Tommy saying "We need to get out of here."
Minutes felt like hours as the group drove down roads trying to find an exit, everything was either blocked off or rammed with traffic. Tommy took the roads into the town, hoping he could find a better way through. Before anyone could register what was happening, a plane literally dropped from the sky, it was encased in flames and wasn't slowing down. Tommy tried to out run it but instead, the truck totalled; the windshield shattering at the impact of the truck's roof hitting the ground. Smoke started pouring from the hood, Joel had blood smeared from the wound on his head and Sarah's leg was pulled into an awkward position, hopefully nothing was broken.
The group got out the truck, Joel, Sarah and Y/n on one side and Tommy on the other; he was trapped over there. "Don't worry, I'll find a way round and I'll catch up to you guys." With that said they went their separate ways. Sarah was having difficulty walking so Joel picked her up in his arms and started heading down an alley, when they made it out onto the other side, they had unintentionally blocked themselves in with those virus riddled people. The trio tried to be as quiet as possible but apparently that wasn't enough, one of them noticed the group and screeched in their direction.
Joel looked around, trying to find a way out of the alley, he noticed there was a door behind him and lucky it was unlocked. The trio ran through the diner, Y/n, who was behind Joel and Sarah, pulled down anything she could see to try and buy them more time. After what felt like forever, Joel finally found a door to which he was hoping would lead them outside and as far away as possible from this thing.
Once they were outside again, they just kept running but that thing wouldn't give up, it was trailing right behind Y/n. A gun shot ripped through the air and the body of the thing chasing them fell to the ground, blood seeping from the wound in it's head. A man dressed in all black stood out in the open by a truck, he was holding a gun in his hands, his grip tight on it. "Are any of you infected?" His voice was shaky, the barrel of the gun aiming at the trio in front of him.
Joel set Sarah down and pushed her behind him, Y/n stood right beside the pair. With his hands raised just above his head, he took a small step forward as he spoke. "No, sir. We're not infected." The man radioed in, probably speaking to his supervisor. Are you sure, sir? Okay, sir. Yes, sir. The barrel of his gun pointed back at the trio, small whimpers sounding from Sarah. "We're not infected. We're not infected. Please we're not infected." Joel kept repeating. Y/n pushed Sarah down the small hill beside them just before he started shooting. Joel jumped out the way, pulling Y/n with him. He thought they were all fine, that none of the bullets hit them.
The soldier walked over to the ditch and got ready to shoot again but before he had the chance, he was shot in the head. Tommy walked over from the shadows, Joel greeting him and asking him where he was. A blood curdling scream pulled the Miller brothers attentions back to Y/n and Sarah. Tears streamed down Sarah's face, there was blood on her hands. Joel ran over to her, checking her for any injuries but she was fine. He looked over at Y/n and saw her shirt, more like his shirt, stained with blood; too much blood.
Joel was frozen in place, he didn't know what do to. Y/n reached into her bag slung across her body and dug out the grey box from earlier, handing it over to Joel with a small card attached to it. "Happy birthday, cowboy." In a matter of second of wishing Joel a happy birthday, Y/n went limp, her skin sickly pale and sweaty. Joel cradled her body in his arms, screams and cries ripping through his throat. How could he not have noticed her get hit? How can he live with himself now? Tommy had to drag him away from her body, blood stained his clothes and skin. He wished he could just lay there with her forever and forget that today ever existed, but he knew he had to fight, to survive. He picked Sarah up again, he had to protect her now, he couldn't let anything happen to his baby girl now that Y/n was gone.

local woman figured out the spotify playlist of it all - you can listen to it at that link
icymi i did a joel + ellie musicians au that has become my baby, all of these songs are songs i imagine in this little universe. it’s been a lot of fun to play around with so i’m so. happy. when i hear folks are having a good time with it.
some additional notes about this fic that just didn’t fit but are fun to think about:
- the femme-led label ellie is on for five minutes is inspired by saddest factory records. david offers to drop the defemation suit on the condition that ellie is dropped from joel and tommy’s label. joel makes a call to the other label (who would have taken her anyway) to make sure there’s no gap between them dropping her and her getting immediately picked up with favorable terms. given the circumstances she gets an uncommonly flexible contract. duh.
- the diner joel and ellie go to is actually just a fucking waffle house because if people accept any weird shit unconditionally it’s always at a waffle house.
- joel is allergic to any and all forms of social media. all ellie does is shitpost on twitter. sometimes it’s of joel making weird faces in the sound booth. she has a lot of chaotic energy.
- at some point ellie goes on tour with muna because gay rights!
- ellie is an alternative grammy loser. joel has never won a grammy because it’s funny. she almost doesn’t go to the ceremony and joel hasn’t gone since 2002 but shows up just to support her. he also gets a producer of the year nom that year and loses to his quasi-nemesis jack antonofff.
- david being a piece of shit inspired by a long line of piece of shit musicians, record producers, and labels from dr. luke to ryan adams to whomever else. wishing all of them a very ***.
- joel’s job inspired by aaron dessner, a musical father to many! his overall performance vibes, on the other hand, inspired by matt berninger - the frontman of the national and a 52 year old with an unstoppable stage presence and the saddest songs you’ll ever listen to.
- joel has been involved in at least 15 physical altercations with paparrazi. ellie has been involved in 2. so far.
- they collaborate on whatever femme + low voice songs you can think of (my picks: coney island, your mind is not your friend, cowboy like me, halloween). joel is usually backing vocals because he doesn’t want to take up too much of the song.
- tommy continues the long tradition of drummers being the most stable people in the goddamn band. does tlou have any other members? none we care about.
- whatever y’all want to do with this universe i support and love and cheer you on if this inspires anything for you.
#thank you that is all!#fic notes#i'm gonna make this a tag#i have fun talking about this stuff!#you get my little linear notes!#tv: the last of us#fic talk

Alright. Time for tlou episode 6. This one is one hour and 6 minutes long. Geeez. They’re gonna cover a lot of ground aren’t they? T_T
Also I’ve finally learned how to make a bulleted list on tumblr mobile.
My thoughts as they happen!
The woman on the… uh, cover image? Thumbnail? Whatever. The lady with the nose piercing. Pretty sure that’s Reba from Hannibal? Just finished watching that show the other day. Not certain tho. God forbid I google the actress.
The curiosity was bugging me so I googled it. Yeah that’s Rutina Wesley. She was absolutely lovely in season 3 of Hannibal (the only media I’ve seen her in). So happy her character survived in that show <3
Am I losing my mind or did the fungal intro change? I might be crazy.
Very fake dead animals. Not that I expected (nor want) realism, but the extremely fake stuffed animals pretending to be real dead animals that they really focused on for a few seconds made me LOL
“you made him soup?!”
“Yeah! It’s cold out.” I love this couple.
“You heard of fireflies?”
“Yeah we get those in the summer” I love this woman.
Uh oh, Joel
River of deeaaaatthhhh
Lol so i also have a pair of work boots with duct tape over the toe to hold them together.
Lol Joel the sheep rancher.
OOF. This scene hurts. “It’ll work right?”
Lol sheep ranches on the moon.
SHE FOUND THE HIGHGROUND, ITS OVER ANAKIN- oops, wrong fandom.
She has a point. Undressing from the inside.
Doggo!
Tipsy bison!!! Jackson!!
Maria!
OOOF. Sara reminder.
There we go. Reusable menstrual hygiene. That’s what you need in the apocalypse. 10/10 love the little touch of “little” real life problems.
🥺
Joel baring his soul and insecurities to his brother 😢
Joel, she may be 14 but she was born in an apocalyptic era. Ellie knows loss.
Ellie was hoping Joel would be on the other side of that door. Hoping, but not surprised when it wasn’t.
LMAO “you gonna shoot this thing or get it pregnant”
Animals! The zoo? Giraffe when?
Oh look at that, I’ve been impaled
Oh! They’re gonna end it there aren’t they? HAH. I know there’s people watching this show that don’t know anything about the games plot. I can’t imagine the crying/screaming/tension for nexts weeks episode for those that don’t know.
Oooohhhh Ellie’s backstory. Riley 🥺❤️
Whew, these directors, producers, actors, writers, everyone in this crew. 10/10 fantastic.
What the fuck. I forgot today was a new episode for tlou. All it took was ONE TIME of them changing the routine I had formed around them releasing on Sunday to throw me off. That’s what I’ll blame it on. I’m already cozy in bed and have a headache and no intention of moving. I’ll watch it tomorrow. But now I’m grumpy I didn’t jump on it the second it’s released like I usually do.

The thing turning me off this casting choice is what seems to be the majority of Pedro’s weirdly rabid fanbase who think he shits gold tbh. I’d rather be “pushing buttons” like I’ve been doing since 2014 than watch the tlou fandom drown in a sea of weird fanfiction focused on - somehow - simultaneously objectifying and babying Joel Miller.
yeeeeaaaaahhh that’s one of my biggest turn-offs too. a lot of what my friends and i were discussing in terms of that is that for a lot of actors, their fanbase is so dedicated that they’ll watch ANYTHING, even if it’s pure trash. and i am NOT saying pedro pascal has been in pure trash, because i’ve only seen a few things with him in it, but for actors like that i have found the quality of the media goes way down because the producers know they don’t need good content to get views. (obviously, in this case, neil being on the team means they automatically DO actually care about quality, but my point stands.)
i really don’t have anything that personal against pedro pascal, but his fans always did seem so insane to me, and i really feel like stan culture and being THAT obsessed with a celebrity is a huge issue in today’s culture and how we put famous people on pedestals, etc. etc.
(to be fair, i also don’t think he’s fit for joel for the reason of he seems to be in a lot of silly goofy things, and joel is an incredibly serious role and one of the most complex and interesting characters i’ve found in almost anything, so. it would be hard to find ANYONE good enough.) (i also don’t think there needed to be a show at all to be honest, but. unfortunately)
i’m already crying over the infantilizing + sexualizing joel fics i am going to be so upset. the last of us tag on here is already full of pedro stuff imagine how much worse it’ll get 😭
i keep thinking about how, after this show, instead of being one of the best games of all time and one of the most complex and interesting stories/franchise, people will think of the last of us as “oh that show pedro pascal was in” and that keeps me up at night LMAO
#this also got long#i touched on the stan culture thing in this more than i planned on#its okay its fine#im glad others are also off put by it i was so 🤨🤨🤨🤨 about it#pedro pascal#anti pedro pascal stans#anti pedro pascal#the last of us show#the last of is hbo#the last of us adaptation#frog asks#stan culture#nonnies <3

This might be just me, but I feel like there’s not a lot The Mandalorian has to offer Pedro anymore.
The stark difference from this show and TLOU, at least to me, is that Pedro seems to be seriously vibing with the rest of the cast and getting time to bond and he didn’t really have that as Mando since he was barely on set in the suit and helmet due to his prior acting commitment on stage.
Everyone on The Mandalorian had time to bond and it’s why I’m not surprised that the cast is closer to his stunt doubles than Pedro himself. Up until she showed her true colors, it seemed like the only person he was really close to was Gina and who knows what drama could’ve gone down on set for Pedro to decide he wanted TLOU as his first priority before she got fired or even after.
But on another note, I’ve worked in this industry for ten years in the art department and after seeing Gina be fired, I’m genuinely not shocked the show has been pushed back by a lot for filming. I can’t imagine the shit show the writers and producers are going through with having to rewrite season 3 now that Cara is assumingely not in the show anymore. Cause Cara seemed like she was in her way to having more scene time with how season 2 ended and I just feel bad for the whole cast and crew.
I’m not on that set but I have worked at the studio where they film with the LED screens and despite Mando being art heavy, it’s not like they have to create as many sets with the new technology. So I don’t think it would hitch the art department as much as I think it would, but I could be wrong depending on if the show continues in the same direction it had planned or if it has to go in a completely different direction due to Gina and now Pedro focusing on TLOU.
If anyone has set or film questions I can answer ask away! I just don’t want my name attached to any of this with how tightly knit everyone is and my name is very unique.
yeeeah so honestly with Gina and the weird vibes that kinda naturally came from P not being on set much the first season (and possibly not officially done-deal cast until well into filming) kinda set it up to be potentially awkward.
I don’t doubt Gina and COVID probably set things back perhaps more so than any possible drama with P. but I hope they make it work 🤞🏼

TLOU 2 as a sequel
fails. And it’s not because it’s different. Resident Evil went from being a horror zombie game to a shooter to a different horror game. It never lied about its changes. You didn’t want a shooter, you didn’t play the shooter sequel, you only care about zombies, not something else, you don’t get into the next sequel. It’s fine. No lies, no 180° on the game before. Just evolution.
But TLOU had a fine ending and message. But I get the impression the message I got was widely different from the one Druckmann wanted to tell.
And in the sequel Druckmann took everything from the original and set it on fire. So let me talk TLOU.
1) The lie: before Release Druckmann said, the first game is about love and the sequel is about hate. After release he revealed, this was a lie, the sequel is also about love and about obsessing and loving too much. That’s what he said. And I get that. When I played the birthday part, I realised the lie “he said this was about hate, but this here: that’s love”. When I heard Druckmann say the sequel was essentially “too much love is bad”, lots of things started to make sense.
2) Was TLOU about love? Yes, it was, but it was ONE of two things TLOU was about. For me TLOU was much more about HOPE. While we develop the adopted parental relationship between Joel and Ellie, the whole journey started on HOPE. Hope, that Joel can be a father, that Ellie gets a father, but most importantly it was about SAVING THE WORLD.
3) TLOUs ending. People say the ending was ambiguous. For me it clearly wasn’t. For Druckmann it was a sad ending because no vaccine is being made. So why was TLOU at the end hopeful for me? Because they went to Jackson w a stable parental relationship. And Jackson, building a good community, in my opinion is how the world is saved. A vaccine, even IF they were able to make it would still have to be mass produced and distributed but it would not end the dangers already infected pose nor the dangers by rogue human groups. How do you end those dangers? By building a safe community, which Maria and Tommy did.
4) You matter. In TLOU Ellie is experiencing survivors guilt and hopes that, if they make a cure or a vaccine, her surviving was “worth it”. That her life matters. To the fireflies she as a use. To Jerry she has a use. Not as a person. But as an object. Joel says No to that. Joel says to me “YOU matter. Not as cure or vaccine but YOU, not your use, your utility.“
_____________
So what does the sequel do? It invalidates all good messages about hope and finding family and community, about Ellie mattering as Ellie, not as just an means to an end.
Troy Baker said in his Lets play of TLOU that Ellie was on her death march. That Ellie wanted to get to the Fireflies knowing it would mean her death.
Ellie is a kid with survivors guilt. She’s literally a KID. And Troy Baker says, she should have been murdered for the sake of humanity.
Let’s talk moral superiority. Some people who love the game, claim they’re morally superior to people who don’t like it. Because the dislikers don’t empathize with Abby enough.
But the sequel is so messy in their message and the delivery of their message. Cause the message from TLOU FOR ME was: Don’t see people as just a means to an end. If you need to kill an innocent person to save humanity, humanity doesn’t deserve to be saved. Just because you have survivors guilt, means you should die. You find something to live for. It’s extremely hopeful that no matter what hardships you face, you can build relationships, find friends and hope and endure and survive. And when someone is going to kill your friend for no reason, you can do something about. Take a stand against murder and oppression.
And: it had it’s redemption arc. We KNOW Joel did bad things. In the end, he’s not going back to being a smuggler or whatever. He goes to his brother, to Jackson and wants to be father again.
What does the sequel do with this? It takes a firm stand that Joel made the wrong decision when he saved Ellie. That Ellies life should have ended back then. That no matter what, her usage was in the vaccine. That Ellie doesn’t matter at all. Not as a person.
The sequel takes characters from TLOU and destroys them.
Tommy - Someone who had a long journey behind him, when we meet him. Did bad things, left the fireflies, now he is married and building a future. In the sequel? In TLOU he did the most heinous things together with his brother and BLAMES his brother. Now, that his brother also changed and lived in his town, Tommy is the one out for revenge? I might buy that, when he’s doing it so Ellie is safe. But Joel told Tommy what happened and sure, Tommy wanted him safe but you think Joel of all people would want either in danger? You think Joel said “if they get to me, avenge me?” No way. Joel said most likely “If they get to me, keep Ellie safe”. So I get him going, so that Ellie is being kept safe. But in the end, when Tommy goes to the farm as a bitter old man? Please.
Joel - What’s there to say, they beat him into pulp. After he happily offers his name to strangers. Like, ok, I get it. He lived a quiet civilian life for four years... but did he, really? He knew the danger and he was out there on patrol multiple times. He lived twenty long years always on edge. Surviving, spotting dangers from far away, being a danger. That survivalist shit is conditioned into him. That doesn’t go away after a few years, while he’s still going out on patrol. Time in the town might be safe and quiet, but he’s still a survivor.
Ellie - She probably was the truest to her TLOU character. But damn, was she depressed. Like, from the start. Is it teenage angst, is it because she can’t process her survivors guilt? Like, come on. She lived two years happily as a kid and when she finds out the truth, she AGAIN thinks she should have died? And in the end, when she forgives Joel for fucking saving her, she ends up alone. While Ellie is the truest to TLOU, the sequel tried so hard to make her unlikable.
Sorry for rambling, but the only thing that makes this sequel as a sequel is, that it takes the same gameplay from TLOU and uses it with barely any upgrade. That’s the sign that it’s a sequel. In theme and delivery it’s not a sequel at all.
Is it about revenge, forgiveness, redemption? With Druckmann saying it’s about too much love and obsession the sequel is probably about letting go. Why it needed to be such a misery porn is a mystery to me. He thinks the ending is hopeful and why? Cause the screen changes and the sun comes out with the boat in the sand. That’s his idea of hopeful. While in-game Dina didn’t even leave a note. TLOU had an open end, where we didn’t arrive in Jackson yet and didn’t know what would happen. But we knew they were together, where they’re heading. There was no reason to believe that they wouldn’t arrive. With Dina telling Ellie off and then moving back to Jackson, we have to imagine their happy ending. But we only see Ellie alone.
And Abby? What’s the message there? Cause it seems, they’re “both siding” us. They literally show us a fascist top scars killer and try to make us empathize with her, try to “both side” us. This is revolutionary? It wants to force us to empathise with both sides, to not choose and stay silent, but when one side is the oppressor, you chose to side with the oppressor if silence is your answer. The one single moment Abby had my sympathies were literally in her very last scene. Was her saying “enough” not wanting to fight Ellie. I was like “Oh, you learned in the last couple of months, nice” but that is way way too late. That’s not a redemption arc, that’s the beginning of a redemption arc.
Maybe Druckmann was simply tired of TLOU fans wanting a sequel and thought “You will let this game go. I’ll make you”

MASTERLIST TLOU
July 20th, 2000 - Sarah's Birthday
Every Friday evening was spent at the Miller house, though today was different - it was Sarah's birthday; the young girl had begged her dad to let her play her new Britney Spears CD on the music stereo in their living room, Joel laughed at his daughter screaming the lyrics as she jumped around. Tommy ignored everything around him just to stare at his girlfriend sat beside him - Y/n being too oblivious to even realise Tommy staring at her. Sarah had made her way over to Y/n and Tommy, who had been sat at the dining table with Joel, and took Y/n's hand dragging her into the living room to dance around with the young girl. Giggles sounded from the pair as they jumped around, their arms flinging around in the air. Joel looked over at Tommy, a small content smile on his face as he spoke to his brother. "You picked a good one, I couldn't be more proud of you, Tommy." He patted his brothers shoulder lightly, a sign of gratitude towards the older Miller.
The rest of the night was spent with Sarah and Joel sprawled out on the couch, said girl fast asleep cuddled up to her dad, Y/n and Tommy were sat on the floor, their backs up against the couch with a blanket draped over them - the soft fabric tickling the young woman's arms. Tommy pulled her closer into him, his chin atop her head. There was a movie playing on the tv, '10 Things I Hate About You' - Sarah had chosen it when Y/n had brought her to one of the few movie rental store's in Austin. Joel had huffed when he saw the movie they rented, he wasn't a big fan of cliché romance movies, more of an action guy just like Tommy, but the younger Miller didn't mind what movie Y/n would pick - he loved her so much he would put up with all the cliché girly stuff.
Joel had put Sarah to bed when the movie had finished, her small figure cuddled into his chest. Y/n had moved to the kitchen to brew some coffee for her and the Miller brothers. Tommy's arms had circled around her waist as she lent up against the counter, he pulled her flush against his body leaning his head down to the crook of her neck. Light kisses trailed along her exposed skin, it was Tommy's way of showing his love for Y/n - it was intimate, having to be close to one another to reach that part of their body; something you could only do with the person you loved enough to enter their personal bubble. A soft hum left her lips as she closed her eyes, hands holding onto his that were laying against her stomach. He had pulled away when the coffee started bubbling in the glass pot, the sound breaking the pair apart form one another. Y/n was pouring the liquid into the cups when Tommy had spoke. "Do you think we will have kids? Yano like a mini you and me... You would be an amazing mom, I just know it." What he had said caught the young woman off guard, making her spill coffee on the counter. A small 'shit' left her lips as she wiped the spilled liquid off the surface with a cloth.
Tommy bit at his nails anxiously, he was scared Y/n would laugh at his face and break up with him for even speaking about starting a family. She had turned to him, her back pressed against the counter as she mentioned for him to come closer. Her hands interlaced with his own, giving them a small reassuring squeeze. "I'd like to be married before I start a family.. I would want our kids to know that their parents are happy and they will never be without one." Tommy nodded his head, his eyes averted from the woman in front of him. He had wanted to pop the big question for a long time now, he had been waiting for the right moment to do it and right now seem like the right time but he didn't have a ring, how in the world could be propose without a ring? Y/n's warm hands against his cheeks snapped him out of his thoughts, his eyes looked into hers, his dark brown iris' a shade lighter than before.
"Now what's going through that pretty head of yours?" Tommy was always taken aback when she would call him pretty, it was something so foreign to him but he loved it. He loved when she would play with his hair in the middle of the night when he had woken up from a nightmare, the way she would trace the freckles on his face as if they were constellations; or the way she would hold him as he slept, ready to fight off any nightmare that would threaten to wake him up. Tommy loved Y/n, more than he could ever explain to her or anyone else. Before Y/n could process what was happening, Tommy had gotten down on one knee. His eyes were sparkling, his signature smile playing on his lips as he held onto her hand. He took a moment to steady his breathing before saying what he had planned for the last few months.
"Y/n L/n, you are my best friend - my life. I don't see myself having a life or even a family with anyone but you. You are my muse, my lifeline. You pulled me out the dark and became the light I have always needed, I see myself having a couple kids with you and a dog that is always happy to see us, live in a farm house with a white picket fence and have a couple horses or sheep. You are everything I have been searching for, so.. Y/n, will you make me the happiest man on earth and make me your husband?" Tears had welled in the corners of Y/n's eyes, her hands shook as she engulfed Tommy in a hug, repeating 'yes, oh my god yes.' over and over again. Now Tommy didn't have a ring, he hadn't even planned to propose to her on the night of Sarah's birthday; but he had the perfect thing until he had the money to get her the prettiest ring.
"I don't have a ring yet but I do have this and it will just have to do for now, but at least you will have a piece of me wherever you go." He had taken off his dog tags from around his neck, he had never taken them off before - they were all he had left from the years he was away, from the years he protected his family. Tommy slid the chain over her head, the dog tags laying flat against her chest as she pulled him into another hug. The pair clung onto each other, kissing the other every once in awhile. Happy tears danced across their skin, mixing into their kiss. Today was one of the happiest days of their life, a day they will forever remember.
