I really need to learn ASL but mostly at first phrases that I'll use when I go nonverbal except I need to learn the grammar too because that's an essential part of understanding and processing language especially in my brain and I don't know if "now" should be signed before "I can't speak" or after, but I don't know if I have the energy and executive function to learn a whole language with a fundamentally different structure by myself with nothing but Bill Vicars youtube lessons, as awesome as they look. But hey I can sign "I can't speak now" probably decently so there's that.
#i hope i can find an in-person course somewhere at college that would help a lot#hopeful rambling#im trying to seek out actual d/Deaf resources too since i would rather trust a native speaker#there's also like. i don't know what “shortcuts” work for signing#like how in spanish you can just conjugate the verb and not use a pronoun a lot of times#and i very much need shortcuts when im non/semi-verbal but like how exact do the signs have to be for me to be talking right?#like do i have to follow all the way through on 'cannot' and point down or can i cut off? what does hand placement change?#are signs consistent regardless of handedness? like does speak have to be signed with your right?#i can assume stuff and also this is probably taught but it's a different wiring of my brain compared to spoken/written language#and im learning it primarily for my own needs rn but i still want to get it right#and the nature of the language makes me more anxious about screwing up which is dumb but brain is mean#and i learn things best by reading which. for obvious reasons. does not work with asl.
