Okay so this is a headcanon post but first & foremost it is a rambling about the AU I’m installing for Erol as main verse for the back end of Jak 2 & going into Jak 3 because we in the fandom can all agree Jak 2 was great but 3 had some problems & if ND wanted to bring Erol back like they did some things need to change so heres the quick & dirty version, some things may be subject to change as I think about them more & go through the games more: I think I like the idea of Erol getting severely mauled by metalheads as opposed to trying to take Jak out in the championship. This gives a ton of foreshadowing to Erol’s earlier conversation with Praxis & the fact that Praxis tells Erol he attempted to take the metalhead nest when he was younger so he knows full well that such an act could only result in death / dismemberment, as he lost most of his face to the metalheads back then. We know that soon after Jak wins the championship everything starts going to hell fast. In this AU or rather “canon reboot”, this still happens, only with Erol not crashing into eco & instead he & the other KG attempt to apprehend Jak as per the Baron’s orders, only for him to escape like in canon. Between Praxis death & the metalheads beginning to get into the city, Erol & an elite force of KG troops proceed face off against them, again paralleling Erol’s conversation with the Baron during the start of the game. This doesn’t go to plan, just as warned & they’re brutally killed during the battle. Jak eventually finds Erol - or rather whats left of him - before the fight / confrontation with Kor. Its presumed Erol will soon die given the condition hes in & its not as if Jak could do anything to help him except step up to fight Kor himself. When the others arrive upon Kor’s defeat they also find Erol who to some shock & horror due to his his injuries is still alive & has possibly witnessed the battle between Kor & dark!Jak. He is rushed back to the hospital in the city where he remains & due to his grim condition & probably long road to recovery Ashelin instates Torn as the new KG ( Or the re-branded “Freedom league” ) Commander in his absence. Erol soon disappears from the hospital, however, entering Jak 3. And also insert my previous ideas of Count Vrger being the one to try and eliminate him by ordering he be dumped somewhere outside the city. We know the Dark makers were very technologically advanced which makes perfect sense given they were once Precursors & we know Precursors were technological masters who built robots to aid them & used mech-suits to hide their true forms. Theres not too much on the Dark makers in canon other than that the were once Precursors but Dark Eco fucked them up, & it seems over time they have all become twisted, bio-mechanical monsters, literally fusing with the machines they built to aid them.
The idea is that they were able to link up with & take over the KG robots, which Erol had been overseeing production of to supplement the living-blood KG troops in the war against the metal-heads, but were pushed to the background in favor of the Dark Warrior program that the Baron insisted on after Onin foretold of Jak’s arrival in the city. Taking over these robots they “abducted” Erol & “rebuilt” him in the hopes to use him as their Commander on the planet in preparation for their hostile take over. Erol being pretty damn agreeable to this given he wants his position in the city back & he wants to get a piece of Jak because he blames him for running his life & doesn’t see Jak as a hero but as a self-serving monster, much like he has become or perhaps always was to some extent ! Difference being Erol thinks he’s the one in the right here as he has the rightful claim to Haven City, to rule over it as the new Baron, just like he was suppose to & Jak’s in the god damn way.
& here are a few other misc little tidbits of info for the verse:
The Dark Makers / Precursors vs Metalheads were taking heavy ass inspo visually, aesthetically & functionally from the Alien franchise this I’m very sure of, in the sense that the Dark Makers / Precursors represent the Engineers & the Metalheads are the Xenomorph & therefore they have a similar history in the sense that Metalheads are actually biologically engineered weapons who were genetically / cybernetically modified by the Dark Makers as terraforming tools to use against the Precursors that got way out of hand / control hence why the Mentalheads were cited as the destroyers of Precursor civilization, who had been warring with the Precursors for untold centuries & shared almost too many similarities with the Dark Makers in aesthetic & purpose for anyone to be content with them being two entirely separate fractions with the Dark Makers also just randomly warring with the Precursors because it actually makes no sense inside of the Jak 3 narrative until you look at it from this context. Nextly, something else I just wanted to mention:
Funnily enough, outside of Erol’s antagonizing of Jak, Jak doesn’t really seem to have any beef with Erol. He’s literally just defending himself & tbqh hes not as idk, aggressive about it as you wouldn’t think he should be. Which is interesting, like one would think Jak would have more clapback for Erol, so to speak, given he vowed revenge on everyone who tortured him over the last two years & we know Jak doesn’t seem to show much of the same reserve when he encounters Praxis himself. It seems that Erol should be one of the people hes desperate to throw hands with, especially if he was as involved in the Dark Warrior program as extensively as it seems. Yet, Jak seems to only identify the culprit as Baron Praxis. Which could be just that Jak knows that the entire program was Praxis idea & thus he gets the blame but I just think its interesting that he doesn’t seem to have that fury toward Erol, who was Praxis enforcer & was at LEAST present for Jak’s last Eco treatment.
I mean, that being said its possible Jak was just, idk, afraid of Erol, more than of Praxis, because looking at it from another direction its possible Praxis, being the head of the city & having better things to do, probably wasn’t present for all Jak’s Eco treatments, only the last one himself. ( The later of which I think is probably true ) The same could be said about Erol, though, & I dont think Erol was the one injecting Jak with Dark Eco either. But I feel like even if he wasn’t Jak’s torturer he was his captor & probably had more to do with the prison via Praxis orders than Praxis himself because as the right hand I’m pretty sure Erol got all the “important” jobs from escorting & acting as the Barons personal body guard, to the way more dirty stuff like, as we did see in canon, being tasked with the disposal / execution of the failed experiments & I suppose anyone else who Praxis deemed no longer worth while.
So it would probably make sense if Jak had more caution toward Erol than of Praxis because he knew what Erol was actually capable of & basically to stay out of his way as much as possible. I mean, Ashelin does warn him as much as well. This being said, I dont Erol took time to personally bother Jak in prison either, because he would have had so many other things to be doing at any given time,
Like, imo, is kinda funny to me to think of how much shit Erol’s apparently doing, like multitasking king, hes gotta be a jack of all trades at this point. He races, he fights, he guards, he enforces, he chairman’s for Praxis against members of the council like Veger, he oversees important experiments, when the man said he runs the city he wasn’t kidding, hes probably more running the city than Praxis is, at least in the hands on department. Its also funny cause Erol’s probably not qualified for half of that, especially not for running complicated experiments on prisoners. If he was it would imply that Erol’s both a scientist & some sort of Dark Eco expert & while I def think Erol was doing things via Praxis orders he probably wasn't really qualified to do & def learned plenty about Dark Eco in the process, I actually don’t think Praxis or Erol were overly present in Jak’s Eco treatments. I feel like most of the time it was carried out by a computer & by random guards. Sometimes Erol was present as an observer to report back to Praxis, sometimes not. We know they had recordings of Jak’s treatments which was probably for later study & observation. We also know it SEEMS they were carried out by a robot so the whole process was probably just take Jak to the lab, stab him to the device, turn it on & hope for the best. Don’t know why there wasn't more, idk qualified personnel present. They either didn't exist & what needed to be done was programmed into the AI / Robot that does the “injections”, or were possibly somewhere else maybe manually controlling the robot. So yeah, all that might explain why Jak doesnt seem to have the intense hatred for Erol that he has toward Praxis.
