genuine genuine genuine question- wwwhy do you not like the zonai? (zonau? not sure if thats like. the worlds coolest plural or a translation difference) given your content with more monstery designs i would have thought they'd be up your alley!! however. i have also not played skyward sword (as much as id like to) and i know most of peoples upset with their existence and the totk storyline is because of its conflicts with that plot? i'm very excited to see what you do with your rewrite/botw2!! given their slight presence in faron in botw, it would be cool to see you repurpose the zonai in some way that doesn't conflict with the plot you're going for, something that makes more sense with the cryptic kinda bare minimum we had in botw? sorry if you've explained your stance on the zonai before <3
hhhhhhhh i had ranted alot about it but i hope you are prepared- (also "zonai" is sonau in german but im choosing to write it with a z so people recognize it at least, im pretty sure zonau is also the orignal japanese word for them)
i am fine with their design, in fact, i LIKE their character designs, however i dont like everything else about them.
and no its also not bc it affects skyward sword bc it doesnt affect ANYTHING in skyward sword, bc skyward sword is the VERY FIRST zelda game in the timeline and totk is nowhere near it, totk draws several paralels towards skysw bc its meant a sort of soft reset for this new era but its really just thematic overlap and references bc those are cool (i know alot of people are trying to convince the entire fandom that totk somehow is crammed into the old timeline but trust me its never anywhere near confirmed nor does it make any sense, heres the lil graphic i made last month to clarify how i think its meant to be understood .. quite obviously even -
Tumblr media
i dont mean to sound .. mean, but some people read too much into little phrases or references to older titles (like first king of hyrule .. doesnt have to mean the literal firstest of the first ones in all of forgotten history ever, just the first of THIS hyrule for example), and while im not against theories i am very annoyed when people try to say its somehow canon when its NOT)
with that out of the way;
i dont like how they are 'integrated' into botws world, they feel unnatural and shoved in everywhere, they have been everywhere and did everythign better and cooler and no part of (this) hyrule was untouched by them their architecture feels not integrated well either and design wise its rather bland, while the sheikah shrines for example while obviously not natural and very 'techy' they still build a harmonizing contrast while the totk shrines are pretty laughably unfitting compared to them the basically complete disappearance of all sheikah tech related stuff bothers me immensely bc why would you just get rid of it istead of developing it further (i know about purahs towers and think they are just like a worse version of the previous ones; and before this argument comes up again, them destryoing it all -somehow- bc they were afraid of it being taken over again is a dumb excuse bc then they should be even more scared of zonau tech- even MORE unknown and advanced tech literally falling from the sky) you could have done SO MUCH with the ancient shiekah tech it drives me nuts
i also think it tipped the delicate balance of the kinda medival setting + high tech that botw had set up compeltely over, the zonau tech just .. is so painfully obviously only the way it is to give you little lego parts to glue together (i know its a focus of the game ... or at least the gamePLAY but it could have been done better, again i think they managed the balance perfectly with shiekah tech, its weird and isnt natural but doesnt endanger the believability of it ... the zonau tech just throws that out the window rly ... how cool would it have been if you could built lil guardian walk thingies djknhfkd )
in general they just feel like a complete replacement for the ancient shiekah and are so SO desperately trying to make the zonau the COOLER and BETTER versions of what the shiekah were (you COULD have connected them in a cool way, like there being ancient shiekah labs build in the old zonau mining facilities bc they used zonau tech as basis for their own tech etc)
like instead of building on the set up and potential botw had prepared, they just scrambled to make a 'better' version of botw, like oh no forget THAT ancient civilization we have an EVEN MORE ancient, and EVEN MORE highly developed peoples there that were also everywhere before you but also were never really hinted at- and then repeat botws structure .__.
having an old and forgotten civilization of whom only some withered ruins remain gave botw a much more real feeling, a world with a history that you will never know (you know, bc that makes it intriguing and is just .. a good choice of worldbuilding imo)- and then totk comes along and reveals everything and also nothing, we know too much of them to be intrigued by their mystery and also not enough to actually care about them (also them beign presented as the good perfectly perfectestest kingdom of light that can do no wrong other than underestimate the eeeevil guy while they also had their hands on every part of the land and made all other races be their face and nameless servants just ... thats weird man!! i know its a game, even if its only aimed at kids my god they arent stupid either!! you really present me with that and expect me to take it at face value what argh)
again i think they COULD have been integrated into it, but the way it was done completely threw me off, im not mad about them EXISTING but about how it was DONE in the game
the way they were done robs not just totk but also botw of mystery and intrigue, for example i much rather had them stay a mystery, only ever talked about in some text and some old and almost completely withered ruins left, you never get so see what happened there in the past, you can only guess, but you have to deal with the fallout anyway and thats just ONE possibility, there are so many and it feels like they chose the most boring one every single time
sometimes knowing less is better than knowing half
(maybe i can make it clearer when .. or if i can get to illustrate what could have worked -in my opinion- better .... sorry for ranting again ;__; )

I see you hyperfixation has changed since I saw your blog last! /lh Last I was here, it was with the dragon knight and ironic technology, but now it's star wars! It's all looking great!!! :D I'm wondering if you're excited for ToTK, though! (And/or the Ahsoka show!)
Yeah I was big into LoZ pre-pandemic but alas we got the original trailer for botw2 and then 2 years of nothing and I gradually lost interest. I started getting invested in D&D OCs before I went 'huh I never did watch Clone Wars and Mando seems good'... but im still turning my faves into beasties and drawing mechanical arms except now I get to do it at the same time.
But thank you!! It's nice to see a lot of folks who came here for my LoZ content are still here for my Star Wars stuff too.
Defo looking forward to the Ahsoka show. Recently finished Rebels so I can't wait to see where they go with the Thrawn plotline and Sabines return. Also I know Hayden is in it so I'm hoping for Force Ghost Anakin and not just a flashback.
TotK I actually can't seem to find myself interested in sadly. Not right now at least, though I will watch playthroughs.

man im sure botw2 is gonna be great and all but nothing shown so far seems to justify the 70 dollar price tag and the fucking 6 year development. they revealed it in like 2019 the hype is gone. they couldve made an entirely new game in that time and it wouldve been way more exciting

great you can have my copy of just dance 2017 it's all yours buddy
3. 1-3 games you’ve played in the past 12 months that you really enjoyed
i played a lot of games in the last year... if i had to choose 3 max that i really enjoyed, it'd be aini, famicom detective club: the girl who stands behind (switch remake), and tales of berseria.
i'm talking about aini removed from me being on aitsf brain rot mode 24/7. upon release i was excited about it to the point where i did nothing outside of playing it save for eating and sleeping, so throughout my playtime i was engaged enough for the game's issues to not detract from my experience too much, and i'm glad that was the way i chose to play the game because i think i might have enjoyed it a bit less if i had taken more time for my first playthrough.
fdc was short and sweet and i really liked the setting. just a simple mystery VN along the lines of portopia (as they tended to be back when the original came out). i look back on it and go "yeah, that was fun"
berseria's ending was ass and the second half of the game was kind of boring but i had fun being the bad guy until the game turned into Plot About Saving The World #14523485 and it was nice playing a story-driven JRPG again after not having done so for a hot minute. i enjoyed the overall experience even though the game royally pissed me off
5. Game(s) coming out that you’re looking forward to
botw2 is the obvious pick so i will not say that and instead say that i'm really looking forward to octopath 2. i like that there will be 8 new stories and they're not just reusing the chatacters from 1 since their stories have ended already. i would also say ff7 rebirth but i don't see myself getting a ps5 any time soon (or this year at all for that matter) so i'm not super hyped about it
24. A game with a cool art style
i like the art in 13 sentinels a lot. it feels like i'm playing through a painting and the weird ever-present sunset gives the environments a nice, nostalgic glow that fits the whole time travel thing. i also love the sentinel comms portraits. the dramatic lighting draws attention to the characters' faces and also makes it look like they're speaking into a screen in the cockpit. you ever hear of that UI test where you blur your eyes and if you can still make sense of what's on the screen it's good design, or something like that? if you get a bunch of the portraits on the screen at once, the faces really stick out and the rest of the cockpits become the background. the effect it creates is really neat.

So, in light of the most recent events related to botw's sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, I thought it would be alright to share my thoughts on a certain "criticism" that has been given to botw throughout the years and that may show up again as the sequel's release date nears.
(I don't know if anyone will be reading this, really, but I just need to SAY IT, so forgive me if there are any mistakes or if I fail to explain myself at some point. I'm just vomiting my thoughts here).
First off, I want to make it clear that botw is NOT a perfect game (there's no thing such as a perfect game, really), and the same thing will surely happen to the sequel. It's okay to critisize a game. I do it all the time! And seeing everyone's arguments as to why botw failed in some aspects is really fasctinating! I CONSTANTLY find myself agreeing with some of these opinions.
What I don't (and never will) agree with, however, is this weird saying that claims that botw "is not a real Zelda game."
It's okay if you think that. I do understand where you're coming from. Because the truth is that botw was explicitly made to change this "classic Zelda formula." And (kind of ironically), to do so, they had to go back to the very first game. To the roots.
But I think that, as a fandom, we should stop for a moment and think about what really makes a game a Zelda game.
Is it the title "The Legend of Zelda" that automatically makes a game a Zelda game? Is it having a guy in green running around and solving puzzles? Is it the special items that you collect as you play? Is it the music? Is it the dungeons that you have to solve in order to progress through the game?
Well, to be fair, it's okay to agree with some of these. I don't blame anyone who does! Some of these things have been really important in previous Zelda games.
But, to me (and this is completely subjective), the heart and soul of this series is actually just... the feeling of adventure. Of being part of the world and experiencing the same things that Link is going through. Of traveling through Hyrule as if I was really there, meeting characters and helping them and getting to know the land as if (again) I truly lived there. Of becoming the hero of my own story.
I've always been a huge fantasy fan. And few series have succeeded in the very difficult task of capturing that very sense of adventure. One of those few lucky ones is Zelda. I'll never get tired of Zelda games because they just provide the kind of feeling that every story in fantasy (and most of fiction, really) should mesmerize you with. And I'm just so, so grateful to the incredible development team behind each of these games for making such masterpieces every once in a while.
So. That being said. To me (and, again, keep in mind that this is very subjective), botw is the Zelda game that takes that feeling of discovery and adventure to another level.
I'm sure you all know what this game is about, so I'll try to be quick. One of the first images you get during your very first minutes of gameplay is this huge world bathed in sunlight that stretches out as far as you can see. You are in that world. You can explore it as much as you want, at your own pace. It's your adventure. You decide, and the game just gives you the necessary tools for it.
And when you finally glide away from the Great Plateau (I don't know about you, but I took my sweet time just exploring that area that seems so small in retrospective, compared to the rest of Hyrule), you step on the actual world that you'll spend most of the time in for the very first time. It's quiet and lonely, but you can still feel that same excitement, giddy joy and sense of adventure I was talking about earlier.
I'm not by any means trying to say that botw is the best Zelda game. I won't be that person. All I'm saying is that, for me, it was the one that worked the most. You may or may not agree, and that's okay.
Yes, botw is different to what fans were used to. No, it doesn't have traditional dungeons or a clear, linear story and path that you have to follow. But, in my opinion, that's one of the many beauties of botw. It's a breath of fresh air in a series that has used the same formula for many, many years. Maybe I'll make a separate post about my take on dungeons and my opinion on botw's narrative. But, for now, I'll try to be brief.
The Divine Beasts in botw were great. They aren't the best dungeons in the series, but they had really cool puzzles. To me, the problem is that players can't tell the difference between each dungeon. I wouldn't be able to, right now. I don't know which puzzles were featured in each dungeon because, from the inside, they all look kind of the same.
The developers were clearly trying a different approach. They didn't completely fail, but there's still room for improvement.
However, I don't think it's fair to say that botw is not a Zelda game because it doesn't have traditional dungeons or because it doesn't follow the classic formula. This series has always been about changing and reinventing itself again and again. That's why it has lasted this many years without truly stumbling and failing, and that's also why it's so beloved.
So, I don't think we should center this series around just dungeons. It's not fair to botw, and it's not fair to the series as a whole.
I hope this wasn't too long😅 I love sharing opinions with other fans, so feel free to say if you agree or disagree with me! There's just so much more to this series, and I really needed to talk about this, I guess. And now that the hype train is back, there's no better time.

If botw 2 is anything but Link showing Zelda all she missed from Hyrule while she was holding back the Calamity and then both of them healing together and living their lives like regular 17 year olds THEN I DON'T WANT IT
