Grey Warden Pizzeria (pt. 2)
Kani stretched as she sat up in bed and blindly reached to turn off her alarm. A soft light creeped under the curtains and onto the floor in her room. She stumbled out of bed and walked to her bathroom to get ready to go to work. She had to help Alistair open so that she could learn the ropes as quickly as she could. She rubbed her shoulders absently as she started her shower. Quickest promotion I’ve ever received. She rubbed her hands through her shampoo filled hair and sighed. Her family had already moved on, but she still missed them. She was in this town so that she could go to school and get a degree, and here she was working at a probably run down pizza place. Honestly, this was the first permanent home she had ever had. She’d been saving up her whole life so that one day maybe she and Tamlen could get a place together and-
She turned off the water then and wrapped herself with a towel. Tamlen. They had been best friends their whole life. And he just left, without a word to anyone. She knew what had happened though. They had always talked about leaving the Dalish life behind and moving to a big city, helping city elves build themselves up, and running a pet shelter. But he had gone on without her, so she came out here to live her own life. Somewhat in spite, but also just for a new beginning. The clan wasn’t the same without Tamlen. Kani sighed deeply as she pulled on her black skinny jeans with tears in the knees. Thinking about this more wouldn’t help her at all. She pulled on her tank top and her dark green flannel shirt before grabbing a pair of socks and walking to her small kitchen. The apartment itself was small. It was one big room with plain white walls and dark brown wood floors. The bathroom, two closets, and bathroom were the only things with doors. She even had a small island by the kitchen that served as the dinner table. She quickly popped some bread in the toaster and made herself some scrambled eggs and a strawberry/banana smoothie. While she was eating, she put on her socks and grabbed her phone. She had some notifications.
Text from Merrill: I think I will take your advice and do a little travelling of my own, but for now the clan needs me. I miss you! <3
Text from Alistair (Pizza guy): I did! I’m assuming you made it home safe as well. I had fun too. You sleep well too. Night!
Facebook notification: Alistair Therin has accepted your friend request!
Alert: Remember to finish the plushies for Etsy shop.
Kani cursed under her breath and glanced over at her work table and sewing machine. She hadn’t even unpacked her patterns yet. She bit her lip and made a more personal mental note to at least make one nug plush when she got home, whenever that would be. She texted back a reply to Merrill saying that she would be proud of her either way and that she understood why she needed to stay with the clan. Then she sent Alistair a good morning text and finished up her food. She quickly washed all her dishes and put them away. Quack.
From Alistair (Pizza Guy): Good morning! Thank you for waking me up. I forgot to set my alarm. I’ll be at the store on time. Promise.
To Alistair (Pizza Guy): I bet I’ll beat you there. :P
Kani shook her head with a bemused smile on her face. She tugged on her combat boots, grabbed her bag and left her little apartment to go to work. The pizza place was about a block away from where she lived, so she could walk to work fairly easily. She also had a bike, but most of her classes were online. She only had to go to the campus if she had to do a research paper or something along those lines. She put her calm playlist on as she walked and enjoyed the slowness of early morning traffic. In all honesty, this town was very quaint. She mused over this when all of a sudden, something large bolted past her legs. She ripped out her earbuds and saw a dog running in front of her.
“Get back here, you mangy mutt!” She heard a voice behind her yell.
Kani quickly ran after the dog and followed it down the alleyway behind Grey Warden Pizzeria. The dog turned around with its tail between its legs, knowing it was caught. However, it perked up when it saw Kani walk up to it.
“Hey there, boy.” She murmured and reached out to pet him. He looked too thin for a dog his size. Some kind of pit-bull breed, and he was absolutely massive. He was probably stocky at one point. He had a red ring around his throat and one ear had a piece bitten out of it. Rage flowed through Kani’s bloodstream. This dog was not going back to this man.
“Hey, you, that’s my dog!” The man turned the corner.
“Oh, is it? What’s your name?” She didn’t even turn around to acknowledge the man. She just kept petting the poor dog.
“William, now give me back my dog, knife-ear.” The man was closer now.
More rage. With red cheeks, Kani whipped around and snarled at the man, “No, because he’s my dog now. How dare you treat any living creature this way. I ought to report you to the police for animal abuse, but that would be too kind.”
The man’s eyes widened and he took a step back. “Alright miss, you can ‘ave ‘im. He was a worthless excuse for a dog anyway. Here’s his damned collar.” William tossed the broken chain collar at Kani and left.
The dog sat at Kani’s heel and butted his head into her clenched fist. Kani relaxed and rubbed his head. She gave the collar an absent kick and walked around to the front of the store, her new companion following happily at her heels. Just as she reached the door, Alistair pulled up in his car and parked. She smiled and watched him frantically get out of the car. He gave her a winning smile and then saw the dog.
“Who is that?” He pointed at the dog as he closed his car door.
“Uh,” she looked down at the dog who looked up at her and tilted his head. “This is Barkspawn, our new mascot.”
“Hold on, you’re not serious?”
The dog barked happily, wagging his tail. Kani simply nodded and gestured to the door. Alistair just looked between the two and shook his head before unlocking the shop and letting the two in. This wasn’t quite how he wanted to start his morning, but by the look on Kani’s face, he knew he didn’t really have any room to argue. The dog, Barkspawn, was going to stay.
