waiting for Dick to return from patrol was never fun, but tonight was more excruciating than usual. your currently curled up in fetal position on your bed, burying your face in your boyfriends pillow and praying for him to arrive home soon. your head is throbbing and your eyelids burned from exhaustion, but you needed to be awake when he returned home.

your only comfort was his scent that still clings to his side of the bed, but it wasn't enough. the pain in your abdomen was driving you insane, and combined with your exhaustion, it was safe to say you were more than a bit irritable. you just wanted Dick to be home and by your side once again.

the first few days of your period were always the worst, between your hormones running rampant, your constant aches and pains, and your overall neediness, you always felt bad for dumping it all on Dick. he endlessly reassured you that he could handle whatever you gave him, and that he loved you regardless, but you knew how busy he was. his roll as Nightwing was important, and you would never want to disrupt that for him.

you still remember the first time you were on your period when you both were officially dating. you had been sleeping over at his house, when your period caught you by surprise and you bled through your pajamas and ever so slightly stained the sheets.

you had apologized profusely and had been so utterly embarrassed, yet Dick had simply assured you that he could handle it. and handle it he did. not only did he change and wash the sheets, he pulled out a box of pads he kept under his sink for emergencies and even went out to buy you chocolate. if you hadn't been hooked on him before, you sure were then. he was always so considerate, and the sweet memories only make you miss him more.

a few more minutes ticked by, and it felt like centuries had passed when you heard the familiar click of your bedroom window being pried open.

Dick was quiet at first as to not wake you, quickly changing into more comfortable clothes and joining you in bed. at the sight of you wide awake and all curled up, his gaze softens. the mattress dips as he joins you in bed, and you quickly wrap around him in a needy hug.

"hey, baby, you feeling okay?" Dick coo's, checking your forehead for a fever. you shake your head before pulling him impossibly close, nuzzling your head into his chest.

"no.. jus' cramps.." you whisper, finally letting your eyelids fall shut. Dick rubs soothing circles onto your back and rests his chin atop your head.

"you should have just gone to sleep baby, you knew i was gonna be out late..." he murmurs, and you slide upwards so that you can see face to face. his hands find purchase on your hips, and he slowly massages your stomach and eases the tension of your cramps.

"but i missed you," you pout, "and you always make me feel better anyways.." Dick chuckles, and your breaths cross as he leans in to kiss you. he's gentle and slow, lashes fluttering against your skin and noses brushing together as he slowly pulls you closer.

"can't argue with that logic," he murmurs between kisses, and you chuckle. Dick reaches over to turn of your nightlight, plunging you both into soothing darkness. without the fluorescent lights keeping you awake, your headache lessens and you find your eyelids slowly drifting shut as Dick begins to lull you to sleep. exhaustion begins to wear you down, and your lover gives you one last kiss before you nuzzle against his collarbone.

"jus' go to bed sweetheart, i'll be here in the morning, okay?" Dick whispers into the darkness.

"mhm.." you sigh, finally letting yourself relax, safe and content in your lovers arms. it doesn't take long before sleep claims you, but just before you slip into dreamland, you swear you hear the softly uttered words,

"i love you".

there weren't any news in inazuma that weren't heard by shogun's all-knowing ears. the vision hunt decree was progressed well - until some rumors appeared about a certain traveler from the overseas who decided that they're capable of standing against the vision hunt decree, and against the shogun himself.

"hah. how amusing." kunikuzushi mumbled, having a devilish grin attached to his lips. "who do they think they are?"

"hm? what're you talking about, kuni?" you looked over his shoulder curiously, your ears twitching in amusement.

you always watched kunikuzushi's emotional spectre with delight. once even witnessing his face going from having a smirk to one of horror and disgust when he realised that you bought all the available dango from the narukami island just to arrange a picnic date with him, clearly knowing that he hated dango. he got mad instantly, walking away, furiously stomping his feet. (he felt bad right after could barely resist your puppy eyes and wiggling tails when you tried to get him back.)

or when you drew small kitsune all over his face with a permanent ink, or the time when he decided to pay you back with asking the seller to put salt and pepper in your mochi, or the incident in a shrine when you almost got caught-

even if that happened just once, he already witnessed a thousand of your little pranks for the following thousands years of you being by his side.

you examined his face with great amusement and a usual soft smile, until... you started giggling. your giggles quickly turned into a full-blown laughing session.

kunikuzushi's face looked like a mix of embarrassment and irritation - knitted together brows and a slight blush on his pale cheeks because of how close you two are now - you couldn't guess which one was there more, so your only option was to stare down at him, until a guard from the shogunate approached both of you.

"shogun, the traveler was spotted near tenshukaku." the guard informed, seemingly not minding your little hugging session - could that even be called hugging?

kunikuzushi sighed, running a hand through his hair. the moment was almost ethereal, why did it have to be interrupted so fast?

"that idiot-" he gave a useless try to stand up, only for you to pin him down again.

"hush, you're staying here." you spoke to him, your hand's fingers entwined with his indigo hair, curling and brushing it on some places. "there's no way i'll let you go now."

"[name], stop with these games, it's an emergen-"

"kunikuzushi, i said you're staying here." you shot him a glare with narrowed eyes, a smile disappearing from your features. it then came back almost instantly when you looked up at the guard. yet, the smile on your lips now seemed threatening, showing your authority. "the shogunate are able to keep an eye on them, aren't you?"

"i- y-yes, yes, we can... you can rely on us." the guard, seemingly a bit frightened - as you intended - took a step back, and bowed deeply to both of you. you kept your intimidating grin, nodding to them. they ran as soon as you sent them away.

"that's better." you smiled at kunikuzushi, now without that gloomy appearance. he, in turn, could only stare at you with a sceptical look.

"you didn't even let me finish, and i'm the shogun here." he says, his eyes narrowed and a small frown on his face. giggling, you could tell his pride was hurt by your actions.

"aw, don't get all grumpy. here..." you leaned down, your lips meeting his. the kiss wasn't heated, it was rather transmission of emotions. you enjoy the moment to the fullest; there was no hurry in both your and his actions. he moved his lips slowly, gently, and closes his eyes. you, on the other hand, let your fingers entangle in his hair, moving your hand down to his neck, tips of your fingers gently sliding down his skin.

it was a sweet moment. the sound of the wind as it blows gently through the sakura trees, the birds chirping above, the sun shining bright...

that was, until you heard a crack of wood underneath him. breaking the kiss, you looked down at him with your brows furrowed.

"...did you just break my fan?"

"you didn't let me stand up!" kunikuzushi protested, his back feeling the broken wood. shit, you won't let that slide now, he thought.

(for this language day, I will try to teach a little about Malay culture and share vocabulary as well)

i made the original post detailing some fun stuff abt my culture of being malay (specifically from perspective living as a Malay from Singapore), i want to do an english translation so its more accessible to those who don't speak malay. This isnt an exact translation (plus im adding mroe additonal info) so keep that inmind

FIRST, what is the Malay language? This is an Austronesian language, also the national language in Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore. Malay is usually written in Latin script, also known as Rumi. There is also Jawi script based on Arabic writing. If you want to know (most) letters in Jawi, this is a video stuck in my head from Andalus (I'm bad at writing in Jawi and Arabic too, even though I study, I don't know much;;;)

Malay culture is deeply connected with Muslim culture, that's why a lot of malay festivities and celebrations revolve around the islamic calender. one such celebration is Hari Raya. there are two ceremonies; Aidilfitri and Haji, I will talk about Hari Raya Aidilfitri only because it is close this year and most well known (for context, its litterally in april this year).

The previous month is Ramadan where we fast/puasa. We do not eat from Subuh (around sunrise) to Maghrib (around sunset) (these are two of the names of the prayer times, in Islam we are supposed to pray around 5 times a day during different intervals. it goes Subuh, Zohor, Asar, Maghrib, Isyak). Before dawn, want to eat Sahur and then pray. At Maghrib, want to eat to break the fast/ berbuka puasa (usually say "buka" for short). Also in this month before Aidifilti, the family will prepare by cleaning the house for visitors, buy new baju kurung, get kuih, etc etc.

aaaa there are a lot of kuih, here's anything I can name (many are from Singapore); kuih lapis, kuih salat? ondeh ondeh, kuih bahulu, kuih dadar, BISKUT CORNFLAKES OMG does that count?. there are many more lol.

ALSO! In Singapore, during Ramadan, there is a huge Night Market in Geylang. Not only in Geylang there is a night market but this is very popular. There are MANY stalls selling food. Everyone who buys from geylang night market knows Ramly Burger, deep-fried Oreos, vadai, KEBAB, DENGDENG. (I like to buy rolled ice cream and chicken kebab mmmm)

In Geylang too, they will buy traditional clothes to visit family. Baju kurung (ehh for traditional clothes, women wear baju kurung, men wear baju melayu but the names are the same anyway) is the normal clothing. Often, one household will choose to coordinate colors together (but it's not mandatory, lmao my family doesn't care)

For men, they wear songkok (that flat black hat) and samping (the long scarf wrapping around the waist)

For women, wear a sarong (skirt) with a long top. If desired, will also wear a tudung (type of hijab) (i should also clarify for muslim women its their choice whether they want to habitually wear hijab. its not just specific to just baju kurung. for example i have lots of aunties that dont wear hijab at all meanwhile i have a lot of aunts who do)

Baju kurung is also worn at other festivities, such as weddings

(my whole childhood I attended so many weddings, this is another topic lmaooooo)

On Hari Raya Aidifilti but before going to raya (this is what we generally call going out to see family), close family in will ask for forgiveness. (it's important the forgiveness is not one-sided, the adults will also ask forgiveness from the younger family members too). Usually this is when people start crying. After that, we go RAYA!!! When in someone else's house, if you are not working now, you can get duit raya! (because I grew up in singapore surrounded by chinese influence, I also call this "angpao" too)

OHHHH THERE IS A LOT OF FOOD;;;; My grandmother would cook a lot during Ramadan and Hari Raya. Rendang, lontong, KETUPAT OHHH KETUPAT, CHICKEN CURRY (my mother every aidifitri cooks green chicken curry, FOR HARI RAYA AIDIFITRI ONLY, ohhhhh that's my favorite part, ASBFKASB I'M HUNGRY.)

(theres also like way more cuisine than this, iu havent even mentioned nasi goreng and nasi lemak and briyani and FUCKIGN BEGEDIL;;;;)

uhhhh others about malay culture? we have art! A martial art is silat melayu! I don't know much about this but it's great

there is performance art: one example is dikir barat

and congkak (like that one club penguin game, mancala, im not kidding)

there are many malay cultures that are also from indonesian culture because of its influence. (Mainly malay culture was influenced by its neighboring cultures such as from Thailand, Sumatra, Java. Malay culture were from Hinduism before then converting to Islam) That's why we have wayang kulit (natively from Java) (a lot of indonesian culture and malay cultures share similar things because of kinda their similar roots and their spread of their own culture, hence why we also have similar dishes, traditonal clothes, even our language is kinda 70% the same)

Do you know; Singapore was discovered by Sang Nila Utama and was originally Malay kingdom (at that time the island was called Temasek before it was owned by the British) (the original indigenous of Singapore are called Orang Laut, litterally translated to "people of the sea"). That is why in Singapore, the language and the national anthem (Majulah Singapura) is in Malay. Singapore is not only for Chinese people, we Malays and Indians are also here;;;

(and im not at all from malaysia god please none of my relatives are. Malaysian is referring to the country, Malay is the language and the ethnic group)

There's a whole lot more I haven't even touched on, like lmao there's a whole thing about weddings and a whole baby shower thing.

Do you have any traits that you think are vital/you’d like to see more of in Appalachian characters?

I’m writing a fantasy story (that I dream of making into an animated film) whose main character is an Appalachian-coded werewolf woman. I’ve been working on her story for a while, and while she was always from Appalachia in my head, she wasn’t Appalachian until I started following you, not really. I want to make sure I’m capturing the beautiful spirit of Appalachian folks with her and the people around her. She’s selfless to the point of personal damage, deeply, deeply compassionate, and smart as a whip. She’s also a little ruthless and morally utilitarian, which means she does some bad things, but her whole thing is that she always acknowledges that the people she hurts are people who don’t deserve it.

Apologies if this is like, weird, I just want to thank you for helping me flesh out a character who is so near and dear to my heart. Hope you have a nice day!

i felt really warm reading that. like wow?? that i could be that much of a positive influence on perceptions my home or like that i could make that kind of impact just by talking about my experiences, those of which i used to be so ashamed of..

to the point of your question-i would like to see more of acceptance as a trait.

people always equate us with hate and intolerance, but that has not been my exclusive experience. yes there are queerphobic racists here, clearly i do not downplay that here on this blog.

but there are queerphobic racists everywhere. everyone acts like they are all solely concentrated in appalachia/the southeast, and that that's the only kind of people we are allowed to be. incorrect!

im not saying we're innocent obviously. growing up we were constantly checking each other's casual racism and prejudices.

but like, that's the thing. most of us didn't/don't wanna be the way we was raised. we didn't actually feel that way. we were just taught that we should, and deep in the hollers all you find are echo chambers.

we are a very "you tend to your business and ill tend to mine" kind of people. we don't wanna bother nobody and we don't wanna be bothered.

so, characters who keep each other in check when something ugly slips, or a character who might have to originally confront bias/prejudice when meeting new people, but who does so quickly and lends aid without question, would be pretty realistic.

and honestly really fucking refreshing lol
