I see a lot of ppl who used to ship chair say that they were great until the hotel trade or that the hotel trade was ooc. But like it makes complete sense. Chair has always been about chuck and how he feels. In s1 it does more for Blair but after that chuck just does terrible things and then says nice things and Blair forgives him cuz “she’s never gonna love anyone the way she loves him” they really insufferable around each other. So to me, chuck treating Blair like trash always made sense
yeah, i do think there was sufficient build up to the hotel thing, like it definitely didn’t come out of nowhere. for me, when i first shipped chair, i was never shipping them as a healthy or functional couple. i liked their dysfunction! i found it interesting that they were so terrible. chuck was awful to blair, and blair was awful to chuck right back. that was what i found intriguing, like, the balance. and i don’t mean to imply in ANY way that blair is as bad as chuck is. we all know she’s not. but within that relationship, within how chuck was treating blair & blair was responding to chuck, initially, it felt like she was holding her own. like she wasn’t letting him get away with shit. like she was causing as much chaos in his life as he was in hers, and i liked that, at the time. sometimes i’m still nostalgic for it.
gradually, though, blair’s responding to chuck like that became so much less, and i think that was what bart’s death signalled, which was why i was like. huh?? - though i will have to say more on rewatch, honestly. after a point to me it stopped being ‘chuck is awful to blair, blair is awful to chuck, chuck is awful to blair, blair is awful to chuck’ and it became ‘chuck is awful to blair. chuck is awful to blair. chuck is awful to blair.’ which was like. not what i’d signed up for, hah.
