Week 1 Research Log
5 examples of projects im interested in https://leah.fyi/lube-river https://safelab.socialwork.columbia.edu/node/212 https://sougwen.com/ https://designmattersatartcenter.org/proj/designing-democracy/ http://designdemocracy.ac.nz/initiatives/votelocal
I am interested in these projects because most of them touch on the subject of design as a tool to create a better world for ourselves, and one of empowerment. I think that design should be something that empowers people to design a society that best serves them, and these projects speak to that. Some of these projects have more of an artistic focus, like Leah Roh’s Lube River, as well as Sougwen’s AI art collaborations. I am an artist, so I am naturally drawn towards interesting art pieces, especially those that combine art, new media and collaboration. I think the nature of Sougwen’s work is especially interesting because of her interest in collaborating with machines, and almost denounces humans’ more typical relationship with tools, which is that of dominance and mastery. This speaks to the theme of my thesis project that I hope to create - something that is collaborative and seeks to create justice in the world.
Something I found frustrating was a lack of projects around civic engagement, and participation in government. This is the topic area I’m most interested in exploring, but I had trouble finding projects relating to these interests. I need to find better ways of finding people’s work online. The only website I’m aware of is Dribbble which focuses mainly on visual design, and not on solving these higher level issues (as far as I’m aware).
My preliminary research questions included the following: How can we use design thinking as a means to get people more involved in their government? How can we combat propaganda? Can we redesign messaging? Can we manipulate current methods of design so that they actually empower us, and spread good messages? In that same vein - what messages are good messages? How can we use design as an empowering tool for education? Can we use art, VR, and AI to empower users or are these tools just dystopian, and distracting from the world that we’re currently living in? What about people who don’t have access to these technologies? Is art/design really empowering if it is not accessible to all?
