this is gonna be a twofer bc i havent read the other reply yet but wanted to just say in response to the first-
‘as for fic that feels OOC to you; if you don't like it, i recommend you learn to spot it early and avoid it.’
yes absolutely!! ive been reading fic for. an uncomfortable number of years & its very important to me that people self-police rather than relying on others to format the world to your own requirements. theres been a trend appearing where people are… ‘critical’ of people writing (and reading) fics that don’t align with their own personal morals and it makes me very frustrated.
also, tbc bc im not sure i was clear - i dont really have too much of a problem w ooc too! some are too far for me but theres plenty ill read (especially if its framed as an au) where characters arent aligned to canon & are just who the writer would like them to be. and many times that actually works very well!
people who get mad at reading smth that upset them which was either clearly tagged (which they ignored) or could not reasonably be expected to be tagged (like an incredibly specific trigger (i.e. ducks, toothbrushes, some every day thing no one would think to tag unless asked), or just a characterization they didn't personally like) and hate on the author and/or call for an internet police are. i won't say "the worst" but god they're close. (you can be upset!! but you cannot reasonably say it's the writer's fault.) so i absolutely feel you XD
and yes, a fic with a (to you) new characterization, which inevitably will feel OOC at first, can also turn out very interesting or even make you rethink your opinions and preferences for the future! always interesting when that happens tbh. .. also frustrating. but also interesting! XD
