Who are some of your favorite and least favorite artists? Who do you feel really speaks to you and understands the human condition? Also whats ur favorite animal and color :) 🦆🦆🦆

ok easy ones first: my favorite animal is probably a snake and i dont really have a favorite color, im more drawn to like... palettes but i do like silver and black!

favorite artists: subject to change frequently but i will ALWAYS have a place in my heart for john singer sargent. i dont know what it is abt him but i love how he paints, i love how he places figures, his compositions are incredible, idk. its not typically what im into but he just makes me lose my mind. right now im in an Abstract Expressionism type mood, so im really into mark rothko, helen frankenthaler, grace hartigan, and cy twombly! oh also i like federic bazille bc the first art book i ever read was about him so i feel a certain unwarranted affinity

least favorite: i have one... but id like to preface this by saying i mostly like anything. like i can find something redeemable or interesting in ANY piece of art. that being said fuck salvador dalí. he’s a pretty problematic figure who gives me ample reason to hate him in a general all white men probably suck way, but i hate him in particular bc he could have been really fucking good!!!! he is an incredible technical painter (and artist in general!) and every so often you’ll come across a piece (typically an earlier piece) and it’s so genuine and really arresting. at an exhibition a year or two back, i saw one of his paintings and i stood and stared at it FOREVER. but then same exhibition he had some shit that was like “america is great” bc wwii forced him to the us and he just likes attention!!!! thats the problem with him – nearly everything is a spectacle and a front to build the persona of “the great dalí” and not from a place of like, genuine human emotion, but SOMETIMES he does it and its incredible and it drives me up the fucking wall!!!!!! you could have been something and instead you chose to be an asshole!!!!!! also he did federico garcia lorca dirty and i will NEVER forgive him for that

speaks to me: in general ana mendieta always hits, but like idk if theres like one artist or piece that i can say definitely speaks to me?? feels prententious to say this but like. idk with visual art for me, you spend a moment with it yknow? like reading is prolonged, i have to stay with it for a while, but with art every time i look at it i bring something new to it, and in that sense what speaks to me changes more frequently than other art forms??? i guess?? oh that feels really pretentious. erase that from ur brain.

human condition: the human condition is infinitely varied but i think at the core of it, always, is love. hilma af klint captures that really well.
