Whenever i tell a very very close loved one about this suspected Dissociative Disorder of ours, and they respond with "well yeah, i wouldn't be surprised", i feel an immense amount of. Petty joy. Fuck that one guy who said "well it would be obvious, wouldn't it?" everyone else thinks it's kind of obvious!!!

Hi! I've got another Mettaton×reader request for you, if you don't mind. The setting is that Mettaton gets badly damaged, and of course his crush is worried sick. They insist on helping Alphys with the repairs, even if it's small things like handing her the right tool or something. The repairs take a week or two, and the crush just camps over at Alphys' lab the whole time. But anyway! The scenario I want you to actually write is when Mettaton is finally rebooted and wakes up. (cont.)
(cont.) So when Mettaton comes to, his crush is sitting next to whatever table/bed/thing he’s laying on. They go “Thank god!” and probably tear up a bit, smiling like a fool. Mettaton is like, touched that they’ve waited for him like that. When he asks about it, the crush gets all flustered. Mettaton ofc teases them, and as the conversation/banter goes on they accidentally mention at some point that they helped Alphys with the repairs… Que more flustering and eventually (cont. IM SORRY)
(cont.) eventually they end up telling him how much he means to them. In their nervousness, they get a bit rambly and end up confessing their romantic feelings to him. Then they hang their head and don’t look up again until Mettaton tells that he feels the same. Then they’re both awkward and happy and they smooch and stuff. // Sorry if this long, 3-ask explanation is unclear and sorry this is so dramatic. Thank you for considering this.
…this has been sitting in my inbox for over a year hasn’t it
dishonor on me, dishonor on my miltank, etc. etc. etc.
But I guess it’s better late than never…?
Below the cut: A Storm Leads to a Rainbow
(TW: Discussions and descriptions of a car accident, and the emotional and physical injuries resulting from it; brief mention of alcohol)
Two synthetic eyes open, and their owner groans, clutching his forehead. “Ugh… what happened?”
He looks in his immediate line of sight. The space-printed sheets on the bed he currently occupies, the posters displaying different franchises he likes (his own included), the star-shaped stickers on the ceiling… yep, this is definitely his guest room in Alphys’ place.
“But why–?” He reaches down and touches his hip. Just as he suspected, his charging cable is plugged securely into there. He barely has enough time to register this before he hears a familiar voice.
“Mettaton? Thank god!”
He sits up and looks over towards the source of the voice…
…and he promptly sees you sitting in one of his pink beanbag chairs, smiling like a weight had just been lifted away. And was he seeing things, or were those tears in your eyes?
“[Y/N]? I wasn’t expecting to see you here, sweetheart.” He smirks a bit. “Have you appointed yourself the president of my fan club? I’ll have you know that you’re competing with me for that position.”
“Heh…” To you, the sound of his voice is exactly what you need right now. You pull out your phone and open your text message program. “Just gonna let Alphys know you’re awake. She’s off jogging with Papyrus.”
After a few chuckles at his own joke, his smile soon becomes more genuine. “Thank you for thinking of me, though.”
“Of course.” You put your phone away after sending a message, and your smile becomes a little more sad as you try to ward off the rock forming in your throat. “When I heard about what had happened to you, I was so worried, and I couldn’t just…” You take a few deep breaths to keep the dam from bursting.
At this point, he can’t help but frown. “If you don’t mind me asking… what did happen to me, anyway? The last thing I remember was Bryan and I driving home, and before I knew it, our car tipped sideways. My whole body was in pain, I heard Bryan calling Alphys… and then I blacked out.” His hand clenches the mattress. “Is Bryan okay, by the way?”
“Yes. He had to visit the ER, but he wasn’t hurt too badly, and they let him go home after a few days. Anyway…”
After swallowing your nerves, you begin to explain the full story.
A little over a week ago, you had been visiting Alphys and Undyne and watching a movie with them. At one point in the movie, Alphys received a panicked phone call from Bryan, an orange mammal monster who seemed to be Mettaton’s frenemy of sorts. The two had been driving together to their respective homes after a production at the local theater when a drunk driver veered into their lane and crashed into Bryan’s car. When Alphys headed out to help, the scene indeed looked grisly, with roadside assistance having to help put the car upright again - and it was clear that at least half of the car would need repairs. Paramedics were helping Bryan into an ambulance…
“…and when she brought you back, I almost couldn’t look.” You shudder. “You looked like something chewed you up and spit you back out again!”
With a sneer, Mettaton folds his arms. “Oh, come on. I don’t taste that bad! Ask anyone who’s ever had one of my world-famous face steaks!” He taps his chin in thought. “Although, maybe I shouldn’t have made them so expensive at first…”
You chuckle nervously; at the time, you definitely wouldn’t have laughed if someone had made that joke, but now that Mettaton’s awake, the whole thing feels a little easier to put in the past.
“Honestly, though…” His expression softens into concern. “…my body looked that bad when Alphys brought me in?” He holds his hands in front of his face and wiggles his fingers, before peeking under the blankets and presumably checking his feet in a similar way. Next, he grabs a handheld mirror from the nightstand and studies his face, brushing his hair out of one of his eyes.
“Yeah…” You wipe away a few tears forming near your eyes. “If Alphys and I hadn’t fixed you up right away…” A shudder takes over your spine; you’re still not entirely sure how all the intricacies of his body work, and this was one situation where experimenting was not an option.
For a moment, Mettaton is silent…
…only to give you an odd look.
“Wait a minute… you helped Alphys with the repairs?”
“Uh–! Well!” Oh god, does he already know what you think of him? “She did most of the big work! I was just there to help hold you still, or to get her the right tools, or to keep an eye on you to make sure you were still stable while she was out getting more supplies and stuff. Undyne helped, too, when she wasn’t at work. Alphys and I took turns watching over you the first couple of nights, while you were still in somewhat critical condition…”
Mettaton blinks. “You even stayed over?”
“Y-yeah… I haven’t actually been home since I heard about the crash.”
By now, you can feel the floodgates open, tears rolling down your face as you explain yourself.
“I wanted to help Alphys as much as I could… I was so scared. You could have died if we hadn’t done enough in time, and if I hadn’t helped and you ended up dying… I don’t know if I could ever forgive myself if that happened. Especially because you’re my friend, and, well…”
Despite the more reasonable side of your mind not feeling ready to say it, your emotions are in full force right now, and you just blurt it out before you can stop yourself.
“I don’t know when it started, but I really wanted to tell you I love you.”
And with that, you lower your head and finally allow yourself to let out some quiet sobs as the many emotions of the past several days swamp over you: relief from knowing that Mettaton is most likely okay now, fear and sadness from the fact that he probably wouldn’t have made it if Alphys hadn’t gotten there in time, and that hard-to-describe sensation of knowing that, in the heat of the moment, you just confessed your romantic feelings towards your longtime crush. Your body and mind are just frozen like a slow computer as you try to quell this maelstrom of emotions.
It gets to the point where you can barely register it as Mettaton whispers your name and gently takes hold of your hand.
“Shh… everything’s going to be okay, darling. It was horrifying, and I was scared, too… but I feel so much better now.” A smooth thumb strokes the top of your hand as he continues. “In fact… as of late, I’ve realized that I’m in love with you, too.”
“R-really…?” You finally look up; despite your likely looking like an emotional wreck right now, Mettaton doesn’t seem to judge you for it, instead smiling.
“Absolutely, sweetheart. I’ve wanted to tell you for a little while; you’ve been such a wonderful friend to me. And knowing that you would go this far to help save my life… honestly, I’d do the same for you.”
A cheerful laugh escapes your throat; you’re not sure what to say, but you still manage a “Thank you…”
“And thank you, beautiful.”
For a few moments, neither of you are sure of what else to say amidst the glow of relief and new love, but eventually, Mettaton has a thought.
“Darling, when all of this has blown over a little more… would you, perhaps, like to go on a date with me? I can show you a few of my favorite places in town, and you can show me your favorites, if you’d like.”
“Sure.” There are still a few tears, but they come from a much happier place now. It’ll probably take a little while for everyone’s fears to disappear completely, but what’s important is that everyone is safe right now, and a potential tragedy has been averted.
Before you know it, you wrap your arms around Mettaton in a big hug, which he soon returns in kind before leaning in close to your face. He stops himself and looks into your eyes as if asking for permission, and when you smile and nod, he presses his lips to yours. It’s not the smoothest of kisses, but most first kisses typically aren’t.
Either way, you’re definitely not complaining.
You’re so lost in the kiss that you don’t hear the sound of the front door opening and closing in the other room, nor do you hear the sound of footsteps. Shortly afterwards, though, a small eep does get your attention.
The two of you break off the kiss and look towards the doorway, where Alphys is standing, still in her jogging outfit, with wide eyes.
“Oh! Uh… am I interrupting something?”
As you wave hello to Alphys, Mettaton gently smiles. “Alphys, darling, I’m so glad to see you. And don’t worry; I think everything’s going to be just fine.”
Alphys returns the smile. “Yeah… I’m so glad you’re awake. I’ll probably want to keep an eye on you for the next day or two, though. Just to make sure I didn’t miss anything.”
“That’s all right. As long as I have everyone cheering for me, I can absolutely manage this!”
You gently squeeze his hand, and he smiles at you.
After a second or two, Alphys pulls out her phone. “So, uh, want to order some pizza or something? I can shower while we wait for it to get here.”
Mettaton rests a hand on his soul casing. “Darling, I haven’t eaten in days, so that sounds absolutely perfect right now.”
“That sounds good to me too,” you say with a nod.
“Great! Let me open the app…”
As you all begin to figure out what you want, you can already picture the delicious taste of the food in your mind. Not only that, you can also picture some of the exciting, lovely things in your and Mettaton’s future… a future that you helped to secure for him.
Sometimes, even a harsh rainstorm can leave behind a beautiful rainbow.

Wow it’s been a while since I did a personal update here huh
I’ve honestly transitioned a lot of my venting/personal stuff to twitter
(I promise I havent abandoned you for my furry friends)
(I kinda have)
(I totally have)
(sorry)
But I feel like the last couple months have been a whirlwind for me, so I may as well keep y’all in the loop. I’m gonna sort these by topic.
First off, I had some issues with my romantic feelings. There’s a guy, a very very good friend, who is just fantastic in so many ways. Friendly and kind and supportive, progressive and enthusiastic, and shares so many of my interests. Seems natural that I would fall for him, right?
Well I did, and it resulted in a lot of emotional duress.
He has a girlfriend, and I knew this going in, but I didn’t fight my attachment. In the process of admitting my feelings to him and working through everything, I learned a lot about myself and got some practice in controlling my emotional state and how I react to things. But I also relied on him as an emotional crutch and used him for validation, especially during some particularly low emotional points, which is unfair to him. It is only because he is immensely understanding that we remain close friends, and this could have easily resulted in disaster.
But through this process I have grown, and identified a new issue blocking me from being of completely sound mind: Low self-esteem and reliance on others for validation. During my more anxious periods, I would slip into joking self-deprecation, and somewhere along the way it stopped being so joking. But surely, now that I’m taking meds for anxiety it would stop, right? Well, no. Turns out, even if I stopped consciously having thoughts of “Wow, I’m so bad at this”, I didn’t automatically gain appreciation or acceptance of myself. This manifests in a particularly dangerous manner when guys who are attractive are nice to me.
I end up conflating kindness with romantic intent, and decide that obviously, if someone doesn’t have romantic interest in me, I must be irreparably flawed in some way. This is bullshit, and I consciously understand that, but my subconscious doesn’t play by the rules. So I end up in a self-loathing spiral that only manifests in periods of intense romantic desire, and a month later I’m exhausted, bruised, and have run the risk of alienating those around me who care about me.
So how to fix it? I suppose I’ll need to work on drawing validation from within, so that rejection feels less of a condemnation of my character and everything I am. It won’t be simple, to be sure, but understanding the issue is the key to overcoming it.
Here’s hoping.
Secondly: I started working out! As of today, March 24th, I have been to the gym 12 times this month (half the days, holy shit) and thats because I, last week, decided to go from 3 workouts a week to 5, solely because I wanted to. If you told me a year ago that I would, of sound mind and body and my own volition, wake up every weekday at 5:45am to go workout for an hour, and enjoy the experience, I would have called you a liar.
But I am, and I do. I think it’s benefitting my mental health and self confidence, and I’m thankful that I’m in a place where its even an option. This is only possible due to a coalition of so many factors: A free gym in my office and a natural predilection to waking up early to remove barriers, I started taking Vyvanse in January to aid in my attention issues (not sure if I have ADD/ADHD or what, but it’s helping me remained focused in all aspects of my life and for that I am grateful). And, of course, two people who aided in the impetus for beginning and making it a habit: My dad, for giving me crippling self-worth issues my entire life and then visiting in February and criticizing my health and weight (because I was sweating after walking up a hill, which more and more I realize is not actually an indicator of my exertion! I am just a person who sweats easily, and its more a function of temperature and endocrine system than anything else) and giving me the sheer spite to begin working out, and the guy I was crushing on (who is intensely into working out, and I wanted to impress him. Yeah, I was hella thirsty. Sue me).
Regardless of the reasoning, I found that (once I cut cardio because seriously, fuck cardio), I enjoy working out in the mornings. It’s calming to wake up by exertion and then cool down slowly at my desk before other people even wake up. It’s given rise to a ritual of sorts where I get to my desk, deal with my emails, make breakfast and tea, all before anyone shows up, so that I can really hit the ground running. And more than that, I don’t have a goal in mind. I’m doing this because I know it’s good for me and I want to be healthy, and I enjoy the exertion and following “good” tiredness. If I was trying to lose weight or trim  fat, or stuck only to cardio, I would have given up by now. But its a habit, and I love it, and I’m sleeping better, eating better, and feeling better.
Again, this is only possible because of an alignment of several factors, but I’m thankful for it, and I’m glad I got out of the mindset that “workouts must suck but people do them because they wanna lose weight”. You don’t gotta do anything you don’t want to do, and I wish I had realized that sooner. Im feeling way better about my body, even, because despite the fact that I haven’t lost weight or gotten trimmer from working out, I know I’m eating (pretty) well and working out, and that my body does everything I need it to. I can take pride in the callouses on my hands and the soreness of my body, because they’re proof of dedication, exertion, and effort, and those are way better things to feel good about than shape and size, anyways. If people think I’m unhealthy because I have fat, they can suck it.
Thirdly, I’ve begun looking for a condo to buy! Housing in the bay area is STUPID EXPENSIVE (and yes everyone knows this, and I know this, but it bears repeating). But I can put a down payment on a one bedroom in a good location, and I’m prequalified for a loan, and I just need to keep waiting and pouncing on leads. I think I’ll be happier living by myself with a kitchen to myself, and still going out to social events to prevent becoming a hermit. Plus, with this setup I can maybe bring dudes back and not have to show them the pigsty that is our living room or the shoebox that is my bedroom. I was terrified at the start of this process, but my mom and the realtor have been awesome about taking this step by step and ensuring nothing is confusing or surprising, which is sweet.
Fourthly, possibly because I’ve been taking Vyvanse but also possibly because I’ve finally begun understanding what the hell I’ve been doing, I’ve really hit my groove at work. The project I’m working on is complex but interesting, challenging but well understood, and I don’t feel alone but still get to feel a sense of ownership. It’s not the most fulfilling thing ever (I don’t know that working on payments platforms for a corporation ever will be) but I enjoy work, I don’t loathe going to work, and despite the fact that I was sick as a dog all this week, I came in everyday (after working out) to work full productive days, and I was happy at the end of each of them, more or less. Its not perfect but its head and shoulders above what most people get from their jobs, and I’m immensely fortunate to be in this position.
Fifthly, this is more a continuation of already known things, but I’m making cool friends in the furry fandom. I’ve made good friends, some who I hope I will keep as friends for the rest of my life, and I’ve already made plans to go to Reno in June and Disneyworld in November to hang out and have fun with them. As nerve wracking as being an adult is sometimes, the freedom is something I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Sixthly, I’ve been taking a creative writing workshop in SF! It finished last weekend and I’m happy to not need to commute each week anymore, but I learned a lot about reading like a writer and choices you can make as a writer to achieve desired effects. The workshop focuses on narrators and how who is telling the story tells it, and the model they use for exercises is SO HELPFUL. We would read an excerpt of something, discuss how the narrator/choices/tense/mood all work together, and then we would write something in a similar format about whatever we wanted. Lemme tell yall, that is so much more helpful to me as a student than just prompts. Having a guide to format is like drawing from references, its helpful and and great for learning and gives you the tools to make your own things later on. I highly recommend it, and I can’t wait to get back to my book.
Got a lot of art to make first, though. I’ve definitely improved a lot in artistic skill and confidence, and I’m loving finding niche styles that I like and mimicking them. The stained glass pic I posted yesterday is proof of that, I feel. Its drawn from Mucha and various real life stained glass windows and a bit from Kingdom Hearts, but I took these and the tools at my disposal and wove it into something that feels complete. I figured out how to apply a cloudy “glass” texture, glows, stabilization, symmetry tools, pattern design, and more all through the process, and I know theres so much room to iterate and grow, in shading and coloring and proportion. But even knowing I have room to grow, I’m proud of what I put out and I put a lot of my heart into that piece (yes, its a birthday gift for workout boy. Shut up). I think I’m going to accept commissions for pictures in this style, even. It’s great fun.
So yeah, the last couple of months have been intense. I’ve had ups and downs, but I’ve learned and grown a lot, and I think I’m in a really good place in my life right now, and I hope that every one of you achieves a similar level of peace.

This Hemi Powered D100 Gets An Aeromotive Phantom In-Tank Fuel System
(Words and Photos by Matt Graves) Hot Rodding, at it’s core, is basically upgrading old stuff with bigger and faster stuff. Sometimes this means embracing new technology with some of us kicking and screaming all the way down. That’s hot rodding. Some people are now connoisseurs of vintage hot rod engines and parts…which is great.  They love traditional hot rodding engines such as vintage Hemis and Nailhead Buicks with multi carbs or some rare vintage intake. Much like the hipster retro tech such as vinyl records or old gaming consoles. The same thing is happening in our hobby. Online arguments break out over the use of “new” parts or period correct speed parts. No doubt those vintage engines and parts are super cool..But lets be honest some of these engines can benefit from new technology for power production and most importantly- safety.
One of these areas that has vastly improved in the world of hot rodding are fuel systems. Just a mere 6-7 years ago putting a fuel pump in an old gas tank was unheard of. The systems that were out there worked but some of them were down right crude. Modern EFI has changed the game exponentially, Now a full EFI kit is nearly under a grand and you can install it on Saturday morning and be at the car show that night. That’s IF you have a good fuel delivery system. On most of these systems the fuel pump is a small inline pump that works very hard to pull fuel out of the old tank. They have to be gravity fed from the original tank. Sometimes they work sometimes they don’t. We have all had those issues. However we are going to show you how easy these new fuel systems are to use. And we are going blow your mind that the system we are installing is not for EFI but for a vintage dual carb Hemi…..
Our victim is a 1966 Dodge D100. This truck was originally a California oval track pusher truck. My friend bought it in mind with keeping the vintage look and feel, but even the purchase wasn’t without drama. (READ HOW JON PURCHASED THIS TRUCK WHILE HIS WIFE WAS IN LABOR!!! THE STORY IS AT THE END OF THE TECH PORTION.) The truck had a slant 6 so that had to go. He had a 1959 Chrysler Marine 392 Hemi laying around and had it freshened up. But he wanted to keep it looking period correct. So he installed Edelbrock dual carbs and had the engine tuned up to run perfect with the carbs. One problem reared its head. The stock gas tank behind the seat could not keep the electric low pressure fuel pump fed with fuel. So the truck would cut out and die all the time. We swapped pumps but no luck. At that point we decided to ditch the giant load of flammable gas behind the seat in the cab to more modern tank in under the bed.
After some research we discovered the K5 Blazer tank was a popular swap on older trucks. The compact tank fit nicely under the bed and we could run the filler neck out to the step side fender. Now we needed a fuel pump solution. Most carburetor fuel systems are usually a mechanical pump or an inline style pump. Since carbs do not need high pressure most of these work but if your tank does not have a good gravity feed none of these will work right. So we found the perfect solution for it from Aeromotive.
Aeromotive is well known for fuel delivery. Everything from carbs to EFI to hard core drag racing alcohol systems. Their Phantom Carbureted Fuel System is a complete in tank low pressure regulated fuel delivery kit. We went with the Phantom 200 Kit. They include all the main fuel system components required to build a proper carbureted fuel system, including the baffled fuel pump kit with 200 liter per hour pump. It comes with a proper lower pressure carbureted bypass fuel pressure regulator, high flow billet fuel filter, filter mounting bracket, plus all the required port fittings and o-rings, the deluxe wiring kit and fuel pressure gauge.
This kit is perfect for naturally aspirated and blown, carbureted engines producing from 300-900 plus flywheel horsepower. Our engine is probably around 400hp so its perfect. Follow along as we show you how to install it.
Tumblr media
Our 1966 Dodge D100 with a cool vintage 392 Hemi that weighs a TON.
Tumblr media
This full kit has the foam baffle insert which is critical for older un-baffled gas tanks. Later model cars have baffles in the tank to keep the in tank pumps submerged in fuel during cornering. This foam bladder encases the in tank pump assembly for constant fuel feed.
Tumblr media
We picked up this new plastic K5 Blazer tank. Holds 15 gallons and is very compact. This is a popular swap on old trucks to replace the behind the seat tank.
Tumblr media
The only special tool you may to buy or borrow is a 3.5” hole saw. Since our tank is plastic it will make quick work of it. If your tank is steel. Take your time. These big hole saws can take you for a ride.
Tumblr media
We found a good spot on the tank for the pump assembly to go. Still leaves plenty of room for he sending until for the fuel gauge. Make sure to check the clearances in the tank. Also shop vac the tank out for drill shavings. The big 3.5” hole makes that easy.
Tumblr media
Here is the cool trick to this kit. This drill guide helps get all the holes for the studded flange perfectly lined up.
Tumblr media
The drill guide sits in the new hole in the tank. Drill two holes across from each other with the correct size bit. Then using the supplied bolts in place to keep it lined up, drill out all the holes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fish the billet flange in the hole using the open end to get it in the tank. Once in pull it up through the holes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now install the foam gasket and twist up the yellow foam baffle and stuff it into the hole. You have to make a measurement of the depth of the tank first then trim the baffle with a knife to the correct depth. A serrated kitchen knife works great for this. Remember this is the baffle for the pump so make sure all the depth measurements are right for the baffle and your pump assembly.
Tumblr media
Assemble the pump assembly per the instructions. Its pretty straight forward but make sure you set your depth right. You will have to trim the plastic hose for the pump. Our pump bracket was the right depth but we had to move the pump up a little therefore requiring us to trim the black hose. Use a razor for this. Makes a clean cut. Clamp it all down and hook up the wiring.
Tumblr media
Do not forget the pump screen!
Tumblr media
Tight down the billet flange of the assembly and make sure you have the orientation for fuel lines where you want them. Remember this system has a regulator and a return line line much like an EFI fuel system.
Tumblr media
We mounted our new tank under the bed floor (soon to be new wood floor) Running our filler neck out to the step side fender. We ran the new push lock AN lines to the supplied billet fuel filter up to the new billet regulator on the fire wall. Don’t forget the return line.
Tumblr media
We mounted our new billet regulator to the fire wall to feed the distribution block for the dual carbs. This regulator has a vacuum port for boosted reference if running forced induction. It also has a gauge port.
Tumblr media
Here is the completed regulator and fuel line plumbing. All we need to do now is upgrade the gauge with the supplied Aeromotive liquid filled pressure gauge. We should have no problem keeping this thing fed with fuel now and mostly importantly keeping it much safer.
Here’s the story of just how this truck came to be, and some of Jon’s adventures in getting it.
Nov 16, 2011, 9:41am
James,
My wife and I are at the hospital today, delivering our second child.
I am going to ask <a guy> from Philadelphia, TN if he will work with you to transact the deal.
<Jon’s Guy>, the sale price is <sale price>. You can get the funds from me today and transfer to James? Please ship vehicle to your shop. Funds are available today.
Please ‘reply to all’ if this is Ok for both of you
Thanks,
Jon
Above is the actual (some aspects redacted) email where I agreed to buy the truck. I sent the email from the hospital room where… a few minutes later, I helped my wife deliver our son. I guess this email tells the tale of probably the first in a now never-ending series of “things I didn’t know” around having a baby, being a dad and a husband. The first thing I didn’t know is that I was supposed to help with the delivery. Had I known, you can bet I would not have been sending emails. Maybe this truck never would have happened? Other stuff I didn’t know: the seller didn’t have a title. That was fun.
Scrolling through the email chain, it shows the multiple discussion threads I had going about this vehicle. This was 2011-me, so I guess I had different ideas then. Things I didn’t know was that projects change and evolve (unless you are full-time on them). In that email thread, stuff like “metalflake” and “Kustom” popped up. 2011-me got renderings made. I was gonna have a Kustom grille made and stuff. My 2011 pals dished out some harsh commentary on the deal. This was by people who, let’s say…liked one of my earlier trucks better and didn’t think I should be getting a nearly identical version; one model year newer. My squad still was nursing some wounds. What I didn’t know is that they weren’t really wrong.
Why is this truck such a deep deal? It would be simple enough to say it’s based on the origins… the birthing room of my son, John. He’s an incredible kid and I got to find out that I’m not a horrible dad. That would be enough, but it didn’t stop there. What I didn’t know in 2011 is how great it is to build a truck with your friends. There’s been a bunch of mods made on this truck that happened just because people I trust deeply said “you should do it like this.” Part of me stopped making it just about what I wanted.
Most of this is virtual, FB IM-collaborations and LOLZ but… it is an excuse for me to journey down to TN and wrench with a garagefull of ‘em. When I was 19, this was no big deal but our hobby is about the people you meet.
Stuff I had to do to make this truck happen:
Stumble around an abandoned body shop in Detroit. No electricity. No heat. Trying to liberate a vehicle which was sort of an ingredient in the material flow that would end up making labor happen on down the line. A totaled vehicle had parts that were still in demand. It had to be yanked then pushed (by my daily driver) across the ghetto to a waiting ramp truck. You can’t leave doors open and cars running while this is going on, otherwise stuff disappears. Where did the ramp truck come into the picture?
Travel to remote reaches of Westernmost Washington State. Live in a barn. Remove dead rats and rat aroma from a godawful 1970 Dodge D300 car hauler. Piece the thing back together. Fight the roached-out steering box up and down mountain passes. Catch the leaking rainwater pouring down from holes in the roof of the cab. Be totally surprised by northern lights at 2am barreling across the Dakotas. Re-learn that pal Willy and his wife are among the finest humans still trodding sod. Eat fried chicken on the hood.
Yesssssss….I drove a ratted-out car hauler across the country. Olympic Peninsula to the Mitten (SE Michigan). This is so I could move stuff back and forth to TN where the D100 was being built. Stuff that had been living, no…embedded, in the ghetto. Up-cycling.
One of the trips with the ramp truck involved a 1952 Willys, all the heavy-ass pieces of a 1958 392 Hemi and a bunch of Slant Six speed parts. That thing could haul anything.
Another TN trip, I hauled a Jeep Wagoneer through the hills and hollers of rural Kentucky where big trucks with drum brakes simply should not venture out of PARK.
And, finally. I got to use the ramp truck to bring that D100 to Matt’s house.

I purchased my first sell at 20 cents, then that went up to an intraday higher of 1.90 CAD, however today the inventory cost is actually depressed to the degree from 65 cents, this to my thoughts generally because of 3 causes: (1) impractical expectations about the velocity with which this task must advance, most particularly after the magazine from the Usefulness Research on August 11, 2017; (2) hastiness for some investors along with the rate from http://top-porady-hani.info/prostalgene-i-jego-dzialanie-w-klopotliwych-problemach-meskich/ job lending; as well as (3) questions that have been elevated concerning the venture's dependence on expected revenue off the manufacturing from Scandium. How Chessable's Scientific Teaching Methods Can Help You Improve at Chess

How Chessable's Scientific Teaching Methods Can Help You Improve at Chess
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Chess is one of the world’s oldest board games with no shortage of players and coaches online and offline. There’s a wealth of chess books and computer programs that can help you learn the game and hone your skills. Chessable, a two-year-old startup believes that it offers something unique — a razor-sharp focus on teaching chess.
Chessable does not let you play against other players or the computer. It features interactive chess books — both free and paid — and tries to make sure that you improve at chess, no matter what level you’re at. Its approach to this is rooted in science and certain fundamentals of learning new skills. It aims at teaching chess via spaced repetition. Once you learn a set of moves, it prompts you to revise them after a few hours. If you remember the moves you won’t have to revise it for a relatively long time, but if you don’t, it’ll teach you those moves again and schedule a revision a short while after. This is similar to some of the methods Duolingo uses to teach people new languages and its efficacy has been established.
Five Websites to Learn and Play Chess Online
Chessable also has a fun points system to give you a sense of accomplishment for learning moves, a daily streak to keep you hooked to learning, and you can also earn rubies in game that let you preserve your streak for longer if you miss out a day or two, among other things. This gamification tactic is well-known in the free-to-play game industry and has even been used to great effect by apps such as Snapchat. When you combine this with chess books from experts that help you raise your game, you begin to see why Chessable is beginning to develop a significant following.
David Kramaley, the co-founder and CEO of Chessable, told Gadgets 360 over email that his friend (and later, co-founder) IM (International Master)) John Bartholomew really liked the idea of a chess education startup but the path was far from smooth. He told Gadgets 360: “At every point, if the feedback was completely negative (no one used it, I was ready to fold). However, I’m a fairly optimistic person so it’s quite possible quitting was never truly an option.”
Kramaley first came across Bartholomew’s YouTube channel when it had just 3,000 subscribers and he was impressed by Bartholomew’s ability to teach chess. He felt that the two could make a good team and the two agreed to meet for a demo of Chessable. “I honestly went to him with a self-critical point of view, wanting him to like it but at the same time wanting his honest opinion of my MVP. Fortunately, John loved my demo and my ability to recite some extremely complex Chess Theory, and we went from there,”
“I also had great difficulties improving my own chess, to the point I felt there must be some truth to the commonly held knowledge that adults are not able to improve at chess as well as kids. I’ve always found it a great joy to learn new things and I have always improved,” Kramaley said. “Failing to improve at chess time and time again, despite using the existing learning tools, indicated to me that there is a gap in the market for a site that would exclusively focus on learning and improving at chess. Concentrating on the learning would be our first and most important differentiator from the competition,” he added.
Dr. Tim McGrew, chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Western Michigan University in the US, has seen a big improvement in his game after he added Chessable to his training regimen. Dr. McGrew is one of the few chess players to actually improve their FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation) rating in their 50s, as he achieved an elusive 2200 rating in 2016 after he started using Chessable. “Conventional wisdom isn’t altogether wrong. Chess is a game that depends a great deal on mental flexibility, memory, and internal ‘clock speed,’ and these are factors that heavily favour younger minds,” Dr. McGrew told Gadgets 360 over email. “All else being equal, there is no way that someone at age 50 can learn and retain as much information as he could at half that age.”
However, that doesn’t mean you can’t improve your game once you are older. “Just because one’s mind isn’t as flexible or one’s memory as retentive as it used to be, it does not follow that one cannot improve in those departments. Memory, in particular, can be assisted by intelligent use of spaced repetition,” said Dr. McGrew, who’s been playing chess from a very young age, adding that Chessable provides just that. “…once you see it, the idea is so obvious that it’s rather shocking no one had done it before. The beauty of the idea is that the server keeps track of what you need to review for you, so that you’re reminded to review things you didn’t even realise you needed to review.”
Dr. McGrew, who came into the spotlight briefly in 1997 for spotting a move that would have allowed Garry Kasparov to draw a game that he resigned against IBM’s Deep Blue computer program, thinks that if you take Chessable’s review process seriously, you could “master an entire new opening system in a minimum time span and with maximum retention”. He said, “It isn’t going to give you a photographic memory. No system of review can do that. But I’ve found myself learning and retaining more patterns, more variations, here in my fifties than I ever did back when I was in my twenties and studying in an unsystematic way. And I’ve used what I’ve learned on Chessable to reach the National Master title.”
While Dr. McGrew was one of Chessable’s early adopters and remains one of its most dedicated users, the startup couldn’t have succeeded if beginners and intermediate players didn’t find it just as useful. Kramaley said Chessable has focused on offering something for chess players at every skill level. “Since we’ve been working with an incremental approach, we could not cater for everyone straight away. Initially the site was heavily oriented towards intermediate players and above (but not masters),” Kramaley explained. “Slowly, with the work we’ve been doing, we’ve been adding features and content that helps cater to more beginning players as well as masters… For instance, at the end of last year we launched 1001 Chess Exercises for Beginners, a great book that is suitable for anyone who at least knows the rules of chess. If they go through this book I am confident they’d come out the other end as intermediate players.”
The site also has books for experts such as Hyper Accelerated Dragon by IM Raja Panjwani, one of Canada’s top chess players, and 100 Endgames You Must Know that’s geared towards advanced players such as Peter Newhall, a 37-year-old from Minnesota, USA. Newhall told Gadgets 360 via email that the book has helped him feel more comfortable going into endgames, something he wasn’t as good at as opening games.

“Previously I had tried reviewing chess openings with my own Chessbase files and with Chess Position Trainer. Both should work in theory but in practice I simply wouldn’t do the studying. Neither interface was fun or felt that easy to use. However, with Chessable I’ve studied openings almost every day since they started and currently have a 530-day studying streak,” Newhall, who runs the day-to-day operations of a web design and development company, said. While earning points, rubies, and maintaining a daily streak might seem like something that experts may frown upon, Newhall is among those who’ve found it to be very useful.
Newhall’s rating has gone up from around 1800 to 1950 since the time he discovered Chessable thanks to John Bartholomew’s YouTube channel. He explained: “I would say my game has definitely improved. However, I’ve been studying in other ways too the past couple of years so it’s hard to say what’s made the biggest difference.” Chessable wasn’t the only method of study for him, but it remains one of the factors that helped him raise his game.
“I am never caught completely off guard in the opening any longer and at least have some idea what to do even in lines I’ve reviewed but haven’t played before. However, I do not play super sharp openings where one can be winning in the opening at my level very frequently. So I still need to play well the rest of the game — knowing my openings better is not an instant ‘magic bullet’ or anything like that,” Newhall added, describing his style of play and what has helped him improve his ranking. “I have definitely noticed that I probably get the type of position I want 90 percent of the long games I play. It is very nice to go into a game at any time and feel confident you will not be losing or much worse after 5-10 moves in the opening. It takes a lot of initial pressure off and I can ease into the game better without immediately feeling like I have no idea what’s going on,” he said.
Getting into a game and not feeling completely lost or being caught off-guard is something that many casual players strive for and Chessable does offer tools to help you avoid that. As Chessable’s co-founder Kramaley puts it, “I guess in short, Chessable is a tool suitable for all, what matters is what course you choose once you are inside. Our goal is to keep adding new courses so that there is something for everyone.”
It’s clear that the users are behind the product, but Chessable is committed to growing only at a sustainable pace. Kramaley said his previous startup Sharkius failed because he expanded it too soon, and a prominent US-based VC told him that “chess is a market where it pays to remain lean”. That is why Chessable, two years into its journey, only has a full-time team of four, with four more working part-time. While staying lean gives Chessable a longer runway, it comes with its own challenges as new features take longer to implement. However, with around 1,500 weekly active learners and 20,000 unique visitors per month, Chessable does appear to be on to something. At the moment, most of the people using Chessable are based in US, UK, and Germany, and around 3 percent of them are from India. Kramaley says the site still has some work to do before pushing for international growth but he expects that to happen sometime in 2019.
Chessable makes money from pro subscriptions at $10 (roughly Rs. 640) per month, or less if you pay yearly. Pro subscriptions offer the ability to find and focus on moves that are difficult for you, and removes lots of limitations on the free tier. The startup still makes about half of its revenue from subscriptions and the rest from selling interactive chess books. The startup also has an interesting “lifetime” subscription tier at $300 (roughly Rs. 19,000) that gives you access to all pro features for as long as the site’s around.
Chessable hasn’t yet become profitable but Kramaley says that at some point in 2018, he expects Chessable to cross over into the “default alive state” as Y Combinator’s Paul Graham puts it – “Assuming their expenses remain constant and their revenue growth is what it’s been over the last several months, do they make it to profitability on the money they have left? Or to put it more dramatically, by default do they live or die?” Chessable has raised two rounds of funding, “so we are completely ok for years to come”, Kramaley tells Gadgets 360.
Chessable does not have any apps but it works very well on desktop and mobile browsers that we’ve used. Kramaley, in his email, says, “Ironically this past month I’ve had some of the worst internet for a while… in the south of France. Chessable works pretty well still; if you can put up with the odd page not loading here and there. We’ve used current (non-app) technology as well as possible to allow for poor connections and if can find more ways to optimise it we will.”
The users whom we spoke with over email feel that Chessable does have some room for improvement. Newhall told Gadgets 360: “The one area I’ve always wanted Chessable to improve but it hasn’t yet is to have an export feature. I know it is coming but for a player like me, who mainly has my own opening lines on the site to review, it is tough to have to manually keep Chessable and my own .pgn files up-to-date and matching on my own.”
PGN files are widely used to record chess moves and you could think of them as the mp3 of the chess world (everyone uses them). “Especially strong players have their own routine figured out long ago and it always involves Chessbase and .pgn files. They are less likely to switch to something like Chessable since they already have a routine that works for them on openings,” Newhall added.
Dr. McGrew on the other hand said that there are more forms of study that the site could support. “I think there is room for the introduction of some new study methods – all founded on the same learning science that shapes everything they do at Chessable – that would increase the extent to which the system not only trains memory but also activates the more deliberate analytical section of one’s mind,” he added. He would also like the site to implement some more methods to create new training programs. “I’d tell you what those methods are, but I’m saving them to tell to David Kramaley in the hope that I can persuade him to implement them before someone else does.”
