Watching different versions of the nutcracker is interesting because there's definitely questionable decisions made in the original, so seeing how a modern production handles it betrays a lot more than a fully faithful version.

#gay thoughts #arabian tends to get cut the most while the asian characitures are least likely to be removed #from observation #the one i saw live replaced arabian and Spanish with irish dancing and a rockettes esque number #but left in the chinese section #the professional recording im currently watching replaced the dancer for arabian with a bird woman #i cant remeber if spanish was altered costume wise #but again the chinese section wasnt #im no expert but the productions that have kept spanish make it look more like cultural appreciation than appropriation #i cant say the same of the chinese section in the versions ive seen #like what gets me is the second act is sweets/treats from around the world dancing so the stuff from the og that isnt great falls more to #the style of dance and costumes not the existence of the sections #i should be doing homework but my brain is thinking about the wrong things
