i just finished the 3rd part of mockingjay (yes this gets its own post), so i’m gonna scream about it
OKAY SO,
i just finished rereading a series that was very important to me as a teen, so im gonna just go off, okay?
SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE DIED...and the first time i read this book i was pissed. i was irate, okay? boggs, finnick, and then...prim... When I tell you my feelings were hurt!!!
But now, I understand that this is a war. There will be casualties. Finnick’s death being so quick still irked me but whatever. Prim’s death was a huge turning point and I think it was a great twist, I just wish we’d gotten to know Prim more throughout this book cause then it would’ve hit even harder. Like, she’s right there in district 13 and all we hear about is how Katniss is pissed at everyone or other’s accounts of events that Katniss was mysteriously absent from (seriously, a lot of info in this book was second-hand. Suzanne...Katniss is the protag remember? Show, not tell, perhaps????).
also, i didn’t realize that they put effie in the movies bc i guess fans liked her (ok, sure) and that she really wasn’t in this book at all lmao (big lmao at the haymitch/effie crackship btw)
speaking of the movies, they really fucked these books up huh? like, especially mockingjay. def didn’t need to be two parts (thanks hp). and jlaw as katniss...well...
REAL OR NOT REAL? - THE POWER THIS HAS
“your favorite color is...green?”
“yes, and yours is orange...not bright orange, but like the sunset.”

KILLING COIN. WHAT A GALAXY BRAIN MOVE.
I realize that coin is no better than snow, and the world would have likely ended up in the same place as it was before with her in power (“oh yeah, just one more hunger games, i promise. i’m sure the people before us, the oppressors, didn’t also go through this rationale”). i don’t really know if katniss came to the same conclusion though? would’ve loved to know more of her thoughts, but of course we have to hear it from other characters.
also, Gale isn’t really a bad character. I don’t hate him, and the bombs incident wasn’t his fault. But even he knew that Katniss could never look at him the same way and that’s kinda sad. It sucks that he just disappeared to district 2 to like...be a cop or something? idk
AND katniss’ mom disappearing AGAIN after prim died, like sis why not cling to the only family you have left this time??
AND haymitch is still an alcoholic and guess that’s okay??? huh??? like get my man some help? PLEASE?
NOW THIS RIGHT HERE????????

POWERFUL. WHAT A LAST LINE.
...epilogue?? what epilogue???

but seriously, what the fuck was that? katniss having kids never made sense to me, even as a teen who was just happy that her ship became endgame (fdsjldsdkjlgfakl). like, i see katniss as a person who understands that she is not capable of raising a child and that’s perfectly okay (i don’t think peeta would’ve kept pressuring her to have them either, but what do i know).
i think i wanted the end of this SERIES to show how katniss has changed, instead of summarizing the rest of her life?? like just show me katniss teaching kids to hunt and peeta running a bakery or something? like,,,,, things can be implied. Mrs.Collins just wanted to end her book on the line “But there are much worse games to play” and i respect that but we could’ve gotten there another way.
we saw katniss as a brave 15 year old who volunteered to save her little sister from slaughter in the first book. in catching fire we saw a 16 year old, tormented by her time in the arena, become stronger and and smarter and begin to understand how the system she was raised in could be dismantled. in this book, we saw a 17 year old become the unwitting leader of a rebellion. but we didn’t get to see her become her own person, not really. killing coin should’ve been the moment where we saw katniss finally declare that she wasn’t going to be a piece in anyone’s games anymore. instead we got an ending that relied too much on summation and less on an actual resolution.
overall, i don’t hate this book as much as i did the first time BUT catching fire is still that girl and the hunger games comes in a close second.
