rewatching mlaatr w the boyfe and honestly it's a good show overall that holds up for the most part imo but we're on the Return of Raggedy Android episode and you know. It totally went over my head as a child how this episode, where the themes are explicitly about the pressures of conventional femininity (that she inherently can never live up to) haunt Jenny, and in direct contrast the villains are an explicitly all-female butch alien biker gang. Like by modern standards it's not "progressive" (masc women portrayed as villainous) but I think it's relatively cool that a show in the Aughts made a deliberate choice to portray the expectation of being a "normal" and well-behaved woman as the REAL evil in direct juxtaposition to rambunctious but autonomous and independent GNC women.

In a similar vein the Victim of Fashion (a personal fave as a child, but mostly just for the fun costumes lol) episode really focused heavily on the pressure on women and girls to always be aesthetically presentable, and especially skinny. Like the main character literally says "Make me as light as possible" and "I'd rather be fashionable than functional" and maybe it's just me but that sounds like a pretty straightforward restrictive ED allegory to me. And, again, the same Space Biker gang shows up: women of many different sizes who are living their best most reckless life, who absolutely wreck the shit out of a "malnourished" Jenny.

Idk, it's not NOT flawed. Obviously, GNC and fat female characters are put in a place of antagonism, and that's whack. But they're often there for episodes where Jenny has to self-reflect on the unfair standards and restrictions she puts on herself? Rather than being representative of a specific societal ill themselves, they're just random vandals who serve as a point of comparison for what "womanhood" looks like. I kind of vibe w a show not explicitly billed as a "girls' show" still tackling these very girl-focused issues (not that teen boys don't also struggle with gender conformity and body image), and making it pretty clear that like. You can be a girl however you want. You should keep your body fueled and running above all else. Live your life and be a teen girl and be a hero and none of these have to conflict. I think maybe too often teenage girls are derided for being teens and girls and they deserve to be represented in a way that neither stereotypes them nor shies away from discussing issues that disproportionately affect them.

redownloaded honkai star rail (on the pc this time) since i have a genshin shaped hole in my storage lol (if you dont know, i ran out of space so i didnt get to play arlecchino quest). havent been following the story at all nor do i intend to now (theres so much to catch up on...). i just like it because auto battles are a godsend. and haha anime characters.

since there might be some hsr players here who stumble on this post, here's malleus (this is his dorm uniform. instead of pulling for like weapons? i think that's the equivalent of light cones. my brain is very genshin-coded. so instead of that, or just the character with its one set outfit, you pull for different cards, which come in different outfits. that's it, although pulls dont save over banners after they end.)

i have malleus brainrot ever since book 7 so im just listening to this imagining him (i was listening to it because i realized i had eng and jp va downloaded so was trying to figure who i preferred. i like the jp ones better.) so these lines kinda remind me of him.
