Saving this article as a journal prompt for when I find time.

I’ve been working at Mecca every day since Thursday last week, so that’s like five days, and then I’m meant to work tomorrow and Boxing Day, so I get Xmas day off. But I think we’re seeing family on Xmas day, so that’s not rlly a day off either. And then it’s straight off to Vienna.

I also need to go to Mosman tomorrow afternoon to pick up my linen pants.

I almost bought that Mac blue lipstick today oop. Im kinda deciding against it because I feel like something else will come along and equally fascinate me, and I’ll end up just spending $40 here and there until there’s nothing left. I’m definitely excited for this week’s payslip to refill my bank acc.

So, yeah, I’m just going to pass on the Mac lipstick for now because I know it’s just a temporary fascination inspired by the makeup artist who told me mac is for ‘real makeup artists’. Because for me, if I actually wanted makeup artist makeup, I would go to one of the professional companies, not ones I can get at Mecca or anything. Nars meets most of my makeup needs atm. Because really I’m all about eye makeup, and Nars has much better eyeshadow range than mac (sorry Mac). Yes I will concede that Nars is very warm leaning (I don’t think they actually make any objectively cool shades. Maybe it’s part of their brand style to have everything a bit warm toned. Ig they have that blue eyeliner, but even that pulls a bit warm on me).

I find it so interesting talking about these brands’ makeup styles and their perspective on makeup. It’s really interesting to see which brands resonate with certain people. For example, I will never really understand people who care about hourglass. Just nothing about them appeal to me. They don’t have any edge or unique statement to make. It’s very middle of the road makeup for boring people (sorry). Kosas has some interesting products, like their brow gels and setting powders, and maybe their concealer. But I don’t really understand what their aesthetic vision is.

Those makeup brands that do the « neutral brown looks » and make that their whole market sort of annoy me, because it feels like they’re undermining the potential of makeup as an art form. Yes ik they’re not really, but I guess it feels like they’re catering to a market who doesn’t really care about makeup and who want to look good without much effort. I mean, don’t we all? But ig I’ll never quite understand those ppl because makeup for me is about self-expression and finding what works for you. I feel like people who want neutral palettes and bare minerals and Bobbi brown, don’t really know what they’re doing but they’re not going to admit they don’t know what they’re doing. Maybe it’s the wilful ignorance that rubs me the wrong way — the fact there’s so many exciting possibilities that they just walk straight past in favour of boring neutrals and nude lipsticks.

Another thing I struggle to help with is finding lipsticks. Like I really don’t get it. Either you like the lipstick or you don’t. I really can’t help you choose a shade, and most of the time you have to try them on anyway.

I think I’m much more useful for colour matches and things that require a bit more of an artistic eye. I really just feel like people are a bit boring with their makeup and I wish they would be more adventurous. I don’t even know what I would want someone to ask me, but I wish it wasn’t so straightforward. Like I feel like I’m always playing around with makeup as a medium and seeing what I can get away with: coloured mascara, lipgloss on my eyes. I feel like I live on the fringes of makeup and make it work for me, but that sort of isolates me from the average consumer who really doesn’t care that much and just wants to look presentable.
