OKAY. SO.

i got this ask at around 1:40 am. it is 8 am. im. :]

TL:DR for those who dont wanna read a fucking essay novel

Shu'us and Vortigaunts are actually allies and have an unspoken respect for one another

G-Man was born out of the Shu'us who escaped the Combine

he has over 600 siblings

parents are dead. very common for that to happen in their species after birth

seen as the leader for their plan because his mind was more complex and unpredictable compared to his siblings

he was only emotionally attached to his siblings and Elders for the longest time

likes birds because they remind him of his species

felt an emotional and spiritual attachment to Alyx specifically because she was seen as a golden child and had a very big imagination, just like him and how he was seen by the Elders

wanted to take Alyx into his care immediately after the Citadel blew but the Elders stopped that by having the Vorts step in

turned out it was because he had ideas of how to actually get her on board but he thought the Elders wouldve rejected them

Elders decide to listen to him and thats how HL:A happens

also hates Breen viciously because of how he treats Shu'ulathoi larvas with the Combine

also is already very used to humans hating him because hes aware he caused all this hell

just wants things to be better tbh but hes a scary looking man so you wouldnt know that at first glance

if you wanna skip that though and read my fuckin cringe narrative fic then go ahead :]

we're gonna start with stuff given to us by the breengrub twitter.

the Shu'ulathoi got infected by a virus which greatly affected the weaker of the species and submitted them to the Combine so the stronger ones had to flee.

and those stronger Shu'us probably went to go breed stronger Shu'us so that they don't get infected with the virus as well, so they won't be victims to the Combine.

it's also said that Shu'us can choose the form they have when they are being developed, so they have their own form when they are born.

when they're young they can only talk telepathically to other Shu'us, when they've matured they then can talk to others.

Shu'us aren't material-centered creatures, whatever they can come up with in their minds and imagination is bigger and better than anything physically given to them in the world.

whatever Shu'us have been bred now that aren't part of the Combine are not the bad guys, they aren't larvas who are hellbent on getting other races and species eradicated, and they aren't children forever. they can grow and learn and be their own person, mature and get better at their abilities, most of all they fight against the Combine Shu'us.

also, Elder Shu'us had already made acquaintance with Vortigaunts millions of years ago, due to their similarities. they have an unspoken alliance together because of it. it's why there is never really an ill will shown between them in the games.

going with that-

G-Man is one of those stronger bred Shu'us. He was born in a clutch of about 630+ siblings. all of which either reside secretly as any of the Earth's species, or work along side the Elder Shu'us. both parents are deceased.

G's siblings look up to him the most because he's had that view placed on him since before he was even hatched. that he'd be the one leading his race to freedom and to stop the Combine. he's been placed on a pedestal from a very young age.

and it's all because of his head. when his egg was laid and the Elders were able to look into his mind, he clearly wasn't anything like his siblings. his imagination and mind was like the crystal he sent to Xen, unpredictable and no telling what would happen in there.

what you saw in HL:A was merely a glimpse of what the inside of his head looked like, what it sounded like, what it felt like.

that's why you never see anyone else like him, because even though his siblings also have wild minds and have the abilities that he has, they can't do it like he can. the Elders loved all the children equally, but it was clear from the start that he was the golden child.

but none of his siblings hated him for it or anything. they saw him as a good thing. he was their leader and savior, jealousy was never something in their mind, they new better than that.

and everything was going very well, for all of them. they had their leader, they had their kind masters, they all had each other, and they had a battleground they could work with, which was Earth. which they probably went to around in the 1600s maybe? probably earlier than that. they've always been there, but hid it so well. IF someone did find out, it was dismissed as just being 'alien myths', so it was fine.

but a species with intelligence will, obviously, still have emotions and thoughts attached to them. it wasn't just G-Man that went through them, of course, his siblings also followed. those who went to Earth as humans grew to have friends and even families, albeit maybe with adopted children or none at all, the ones who were animals grew to love any owners or animal packs they had. and obviously, the ones who stayed with the Elders considered them to be like their parents, a huge family.

G-Man never really got close to any humans, however. not emotionally. he had people who considered him a 'pal' or a work buddy or acquaintance, people who would just ramble to him about their troubles like he was a statue, or enjoyed being with him on their breaks because he was calm. but he never personally considered them close to him. he felt family love for his siblings and friendship towards any species that were allied with them, and that was it. he did at least like birds though. especially crows. he thought they were lovely to watch and fun to look after in his spare time. but that was that.

not that he didn't like humans, but it was that he held his grip as a leader, he worked in the shadows, he saw humans like teammates and soldiers. he could befriend them, get comfy with them, but he had a job. it wasnt like a normal one, but it was a role he took nonetheless.

but whatever took place at Black Mesa felt like fate to him. not just with them experimenting on the borderworld, having connections to the military, being extremely influential on the government, among other factors. but the people. they were an extreme key factor. they way the staff, scientists, security guards, engineers, mechanics, all worked together and got to know one another, despite them being in such different sectors, levels, different branches of their work entirely, yet they so cleanly kept their works private and within their own areas, was extremely fascinating to him. like ants.

talking with a group of scientists while they worked in their labs, chatting with one of his assigned security guards while they walked him to the next sector, introducing himself to Breen and his associates. something about it, how they worked and lived together. it felt like home. like a human, more fragile version of home.

that's when he met the Vance family. obviously, with the sector of where the experiment was being conducted, he had to meet with the staff there regularly. so he became close to Kleiner and Eli as even a bit more than pals. Kleiner probably would've considered him a friend even, saying that he wished he could meet Gordon personally, he probably would like him. Barney too, maybe. Eli had no ill feelings towards G' at the time. he thought he was a decent guy, more friendly than most government officials were for sure. so friendly in fact that he even got to speak with Eli's wife, and mother of their only child, Azian.

she came around a few times during break hours at the cafeteria, and sometimes the labs. she was a kind woman, liked to sit next to Eli when they were at a table or stand next to him at the counters. and she was great to have conversations with. she herself was a scientists, but in a different branch of the facility, and was allowed to take time off of work to raise their child, same with Eli, but he was forced sometimes to get to work because otherwise he'd never leave their kid alone.

and speaking of the kid, G' did eventually meet her.

it was a day when Azian was visiting Eli at the labs, and she had no babysitter to look after their daughter. children were never allowed in the facilities, except in the more safer areas for high paying school fieldtrips. Azian and their daughter were an exception due to them living in the dorm houses of the facility plus being staff. G' was visiting the labs as well with Breen at the time, and walking in, that was when he saw an extremely small child standing at the legs of her parents.

Alyx.

Azian apologized for bringing her in, not knowing they were both coming, but Breen quickly assured her it was fine, as long as G' didn't see a problem with it, which he didn't. he didn't mind children, he had to look after a few of them in his time on Earth, and most times they enjoyed his company and he enjoyed theirs. he did a fairly small introduction to her, so that she wouldnt be too afraid of him.

but he obviously was taken aback when she ran up to him and began making circle around his legs, stopping at his feet and giving a very excited 'hello'. she made her way to a counter next to him and climbed it, with Azian and Eli obviously worried she would hurt herself, and she stood up top the counter, exclaiming how tall he was, and pale, and super official looking, and that he had weird eyes, and that his hand must hurt from holding his briefcase, and eventually Azian had to grab her in her arms and both her plus Eli apologized, saying that she was a very curious and energized child. Breen laughed it off, saying how it was sweet of her to be so open and friendly. G' merely looked at her with slightly big eyes, and a very slight smile, saying

"she's a very interesting child, definitely."

something along those lines. but his thought about her were way more than that. complex, confusing, all over the place, so many trains running at the same time in his head going in impossible ways.

the most weird one had to be that he felt a sort of similarity to her.

the rest of the times that he had seen Alyx, her personality was so strong. she was curious, inventive, interested in so many things, she loved to participate in anything, she had so many ideas of her own, and importantly, her parents looked very highly to her. Eli praised her constantly, not just for how cute she was, but her bright mind and high imagination. and Azian thought she was so incredibly talented, always catching her drawing and coming up with her own ways to have fun with anyone she was with, or if she was on her own. he even heard stories about how kind and helping she was towards others, adults and children alike. she never wanted anyone to feel alone or helpless, she loved making others happy and finding her own ways to bring their spirits up. her parents held her up in such high states, they already had plans on where she'd go for schooling, and said that, no matter what she took as a career, they knew she was going to be the best at.

it felt like there was nothing she could do to ever disappoint them.

maybe thats why he felt so similar to her.

maybe thats why he felt this connection, like they shared something within the both of them, mentally, spiritually.

G' already knew he was meeting his destination. the crystals, the military, the researchers. he felt something similar when he found Gina and Colette, who seemed attached to the hip and could rely on each other. when he found Adrian and had the feeling that he could be someone greater with his abilities and power to adapt to survive. he even felt this with Gordon, knowing his vocal disability and that he had the luck of some sort of deity.

but it felt more than that. it didnt just feel like he met fate, it felt like he'd crashed into it like a brick wall. that little girl, without herself knowing, was someone special and unique, was strong in will and mind, was stubborn and determined, was brave and filled with courage, and she barely backed down from anything. this wasn't just child naivety or blissful ignorance. this was more than that.

that was the key.

she was a key to everything he needed. that last little piece to complete his puzzle.

and he wasn't going to throw any of that away.

but he also didnt want to abuse it.

he stayed out of her sight the rest of her life after the Cascade. he never even showed up to her when Eli and her got to safety and where able to find the rest of their survived friends. it was all part of the plan, the big idea to take place. plus if he even tried to go near anyone, especially her, Eli would've tried to grab him by the throat. he could take him, but he didnt want the hassle, and didnt want Alyx to worry anymore for her fathers health than she already had to deal with.

but he kept a close eye on her and watched as she grew, physically and mentally, emotionally and socially. to say he was excited about it, it wouldnt be the right word, not his context. he was proud. he was so proud of her for turning out to be the best she could have become in the situation she was placed in. he couldnt have been happier about it.

but he did go on to wonder

if this hadn't happened, and there were no dangers out there for her to worry about, and he never was in her life, what she would've been like. obviously he knew that, he looked into it admittedly, he was curious. he saw that reality in everyone he took an interest in, he wanted to know, it was only fair.

it was more of how he personally felt about it. would he have been happy staying content with the family he had now, of tens of Elders and hundreds of siblings. or would he have eventually longed for something greater. something like Gina and Colette, they were not blood related but shared a special bond. something like Gordon and Adrian, finding others not part of his gene pool that could survive like they could.

something like Alyx, where it felt like he looked into a distorted fuzzy spiritual mirror of himself.

of course, the Elders knew about it, and although they were worried as to what that could mean for the plan, G' had assured them thoroughly that, no matter what he felt towards any of the humans he encountered, it would never disrupt the plan.

but the concern was still there. and it worsened when the Citadel exploded and they had Freeman in stasis. because it meant that Alyx was still there, untouched, not bothered by the flow of time or the aftermath of the explosion. that wasnt part of it, and they got wind that he was going to do something to Freeman, probably send him out on his own while he collected Alyx. but it wasnt the right time.

why he'd want to collect her at that time is a mystery. maybe he thought it was the only opportunity he had to get to her, to have her joins his side. but it wasnt the right way. his impulses got the better of him. so the Elders contacted the only ones who wouldve been able to do something about it. Vorts came in their aid, and Alyx and Gordon were out of his grasps until he was reminded of what he had to do.

he told them he thought there was no other way of getting at her. that any idea that he suggested wouldve been refused and that he had to do at least something. the Elders realized they really had no choice, and listened to whatever ideas he had in mind.

and thats how everything past Alyx's revival happened. it was all planned out and needed to be done.

he knew she wouldnt like it, wouldnt agree to it, wouldnt be able to understand why he had to do what was done, but he knew it was for the better, that she'd one day be able to see why somethings were the way they were, and why she needed to do what she'd done to that Advisor. one day she'd know, and she'd be in a better position, with those she loved by her side. and he knew he wasnt one of them. but he was content in knowing she'd be in her own life, with her own family, and happy. besides, he was used to not being liked, what with Eli no longer trusting him, and Breen hating him for bring Gordon back to destroy the Combine. although he shouldve seen that coming given he and that army were using his species like biological weapons, like they did with everything else.

but things would be different. one day. and he and the humans and vortigaunts and all other species wouldnt have to worry anymore.

one day.

Watching The Amazing Spidernan movies so that I’m all caught up before No Way Home. Will add my thoughts as I have them. Note I am not some big Spider-Man fan nor have I read the comics so if my thoughts sound kinda stupid they probably are.

First movie:

That’s a good trick with the broom. Making a mental note as we speak.

Actually seeing Peter say goodbye to his parents is horrible and I would like to never experience it again

SALLY FIELD IS AUNT MAY?! Why does this one have the good cast? (not good as in better but good as in more well known)

The sexual tension in “good morning flash…good morning Peter” (this is a joke I’m not shipping him with his bully)

Jesus roid rage much?

Shut your blinds! I don’t know who would be looking in your window at this exact moment but close them anyway!

This version of Harry is kinda creepy I’m sure the actor is swell but the character is terrifying. Original version Harry was swell whereas the actor is…

This movies shorter or at least it feels shorter

An excellent show of what happens when you tell a rich daddy’s boy no for the first time.

This makes me very sad. She’s so excited for the possibility of Oxford.

As much as Harry disturbs me, I want him to burn his entire team.

I think it’s mostly his eyes, his behaviour can be explained by trauma (why I find Harry creepy)

PLANES NEED THE POWER!

I really like SpiderAndrew, the movies are fine but as a character I thoroughly enjoy him

Captain Stacy can’t blame him! She’s clearly stubborn as hell and her own free woman

I quite literally stopped breathing (in reference to the almost plane crash)

Is this why they made it Gwen and not MJ so that he could kill her and be an actual bad guy? From my little knowledge of the comics and what I’ve seen from the movies Harry would never hurt MJ so it had to be someone else important to Peter but not super important to him for him to a real bad guy

I like that Harry actually looks like a goblin.

What was the disease he’s supposed to have?

This poor family. I know I said they gave me bad vibes in the first movie but nobody deserves this.

He looks less like a tool with his suit on…but only slightly less

Baby you better get back behind that baracade!

Nobody talk to me I’m very emotional. This child looks very much like a magical mix of all 3 of my brothers put together and seeing him stand there so brave but so scared is doing something to me.

Final thoughts:

So I think SpiderAndrew might be a close second favourite for me. I like the relationships of the original the most, the comedy of the mcu version the most but this one was like a nice in between. Im a little disappointed there won’t be a third not cos I think I would have enjoyed it just cos the original had 3 movies, the mcu version will have at least 3 movies and this one is left out with 2. Don’t think I would have loved Shailene Woodley as MJ though so I dunno. I think the only thing I would have wanted from a third movie is to know who fedora guy is…and for Peter and May to acknowledge that they both know that he is Spider-Man. Apart from that it was fine and I now feel fully prepared for No Way Home.

“You know what’s the best way to die early?” I hear someone whispering to me as my lids feel heavy and the darkness looms over my head. I open my mouth to say something but my throat feels sore from all the alcohol and my lips bruised from kissing random girls, trying to forget her. So I wait silently for the person to continue.

“It’s to love someone who doesn’t love you back.” The words are etched upon my memories and my heart.

I wake up with a start, sweats of bead all over my forehead, my breath ragged and my vision hazy. I bring my hands to my eyes and gently rub them until I can see clearer.

I move to see the person lying besides me. She’s still here, I think with a burning ache inside my chest. I reach out my hand to remove the few strands of her beautiful golden brown hair away from her forehead. She’s sleeping soundly. I smile before getting out of the bed slowly and carefully so I don’t wake her up.

I go to the bathroom and then head down to the kitchen to prepare her breakfast. She likes my cooking. She has always loved it. I start preparing her favourite: scrambled eggs and pancakes.

I am placing the plates on the table when she comes downstairs with her bed hair, a goofy smile over her lips. She looks so cute. I shake my head, grinning. She must have come downstairs without even going to the bathroom. Did she want to see me when she woke up and when I wasn’t there?

“You made this for me?” She asks in her sweet honey voice and I nod my head before walking up to her.

“I am the one who should be cooking for us,” she whines childishly. I chuckle before wrapping both of my arms around her small frame and lean my head closer to plant a small kiss on her forehead.

“Good morning to you too!” My tone is cheerful, she isn’t able to tell the fake-ness. She grins and lightly pecks me on the lips.

“Morning! I’ll go and wash up. Be right back.” She pulls away and runs back upstairs while I go back to the dinner table and seat myself. My coffee cup is sitting in front of me and my phone right next to it, already vibrating from all the messages my friends have been sending. I pick it up as I wait for her to come back.

I open the group chat and am immediately bombarded my the messages from my friends.

JS: How did the night go? (≧∀≦)

M: Shut up Jackson.

BB: y r u askng bout da night? ◑○◑

JB: Dnt talk lik dat Bb.

YJ: As if youre any better.

JS: Tell me~ @(·o·)@

YG: Im also vry curious.

JB: Ignre dose ppl Jinyoung.

My eyes can’t roll any further back as I skim through the endless amount of text messages. I sigh because I don’t really have the time to read all of those because I notice footsteps coming down. I put the phone back and lift my head to see Mina coming my way.

We’re on our way to meet the guys because they’ve been bugging my nonstop to introduce Mina to them. She only saw them briefly on the wedding and she doesn’t know them otherwise. I place my free hand over hers and give it a soft squeeze.

“Are you nervous?” I ask.

“No … maybe. But what if they don’t like me?” she breathes out and I can tell she’s nervous by the way she’s fidgeting. I squeeze a little tighter.

“They’ll love you,” I assure her with a smile and she turns to look at me. “I’m sure you’ll be alright. You’re perfect, Mina. Nobody can’t not like you.” She seems a little happier as I tell her this. I stop the car right in front of the cafe that we’re supposed to meet at and ask Mina to get off.

“Wait. I’ll come back after parking the car.”

“Let’s go,” I slip my hand in Mina’s and pull her inside the cafe with me. I’m so familiar with the place that even the man behind the counter recognises me and sends me a smile after noticing Mina and I. In the farthest corner, I see the six boys sitting on a table and we head towards it. Yugyeom is the first to notice us.

“Hyung!” He says cheerfully and starts waving his hand enthusiastically. The others whip their heads towards us after hearing Yugyeom.

“Hi,” I say with a smile.

“Sweet muffins! Does your wife get prettier by the second? Because she’s even prettier than yesterday.” Jackson decides to comment shameless and Mina ducks her head down in embarrassment. Mark nudges the male in the ribs and he scowls.

“Have a seat guys.” Jae bum motions his hands towards the two seats and we sit down.

“Mina, this is JaeBum, Yugyeom, YoungJae, Bambam, Jackson and Mark and guys this is Mina, my wife.” I gesture my finger towards the respective males and Mina mumbles a small hello and nice to meet you to all of them individually. She’s really shy.

Although I have known Mina longer than I have known these guys, I didn’t introduce them to each other. Theres no special reason but just a thing I tend to do. Not mixing my friends. I once had a terrible experience when the two people became better friends and I was left behind. Albeit theres no chance of that happening now. These guys are like my brothers and Mina, well, I know she’s not going anywhere now that we’re married.

“You guys took so long so that’s why already ordered. I hope you don’t mind,” Mark says, grinning as he places a chip inside his mouth and Mina speaks, “No thats alright. I’m sorry that you had to wait.” She’s smiling now. That makes me happy. Now that she’s my family, I want her to be happy even if the reason of her happiness isn’t me.

Mina and I got married not because of my love for her, but because of our parents. I know that the sad reality is, she doesn’t love me like I love her. She loves me as a friend. And if her parents had not asked her to marry me, she would had never said yes.

It’s a month after our marriage and Mina’s been getting along with the guys extremely well. Today we’re at Mark’s house for a Saturday movie night and Mina seems extremely happy. She’s almost jumping with excitement as Mark opens the door to invite us in.

“You’re here!” He says and lets us in. I wave my hand slightly and enter with Mina. We head towards the living room and find Jackson sitting there on the couch eating something.

“You’re already here?” I ask but before Jackson can say anything, Mark says, “He practically lives with me. He never leaves.” as he glares at Jackson who only sticks his tongue out like a child. Mina giggles before seating herself down next to Jackson.

“I do not. And hey you’re here.” Jackson finishes stuffing the fish taco inside his mouth and grins at Mina. I follow Mark inside the kitchen. He’s taking out popcorn packets from the cupboards when he notices me.

“I’m glad Mina’s getting along with everyone.” I nod my head in agreement and add, “Especially you.” Mark’s smile falls away for a second.

“I guess … ” He looks away and turns to the microwave. “Jackson call the others already!” He shouts over his shoulder and Jackson yells back from the living room an okay.

I am leaving the kitchen when Mina enters, all smiles. She brushes past me and goes to Mark.

“Can I help you with something?” She asks with a cheery tone and Mark raises his head to look at me. He looks at me like he’s asking for permission. I don’t understand. I swallow hard but say nothing and leave.

I squeeze myself between Jae Bum and Jackson after everyone arrives and settles in the living room. The lights are out and I’m assuming thats because we’re watching a horror movie. I’m not to happy about the fact because I know Mina doesn’t enjoy horror movies. I glance at her, seated next to Mark on the carpeted ground with Bambam on the other side. She’s smiling heavenly and hasn’t even noticed the dark. They’re chatting about something in hushed voices. I scowl but stop the negative thoughts forming inside my head. She just clicks well with Mark and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I sit restlessly throughout the first half of the movie. I am being so annoying that even Jackson has to ask me to stop moving. I am restless because I know a jump scare is about to come. I’m sure of it. And I’m uneasy because I am aware of the fact that Mina will react to it. I want to be the one sitting next to her. I want to be the one she jumps into when she gets scared but I don’t say anything. My lips are pressed into a hard line and I say nothing. There’s this feeling inside me that is so sure that Mina will reject my offer to sit next to her. She’ll say its fine when its not. But I keep quiet.

I sink back into the couch, my eyes glued to Mina. A scream erupts from her side and I find Bambam shouting, almost standing up with fear when a figure appears on the screen. My eyes go back Mina and she is still. Maybe she didn’t get scared, I think in relief.

Maybe I’m being weird. I focus my attention back to the movie which has almost reached its climax. The main lead is slowly walking towards the spooky room at the end of the hallway. She places her hand on the door knob and twists it open, another dismembered and horrifying person pops out and Jackson screams directly into my ear.

Jae Bum groans and smacks Jackson in the back of his head and he winces in pain. I can hear the maknae line stifling their laughter and Mark chuckles loudly. I look at him and he has in arm wrapped protectively around Mina. I clench my jaw. Her head is buried into his shoulder and she’s letting out a muffled cry. I knew she gets scared easily. Mark pats her back.

“Are you okay, noona?” Before I can open my mouth, YoungJae asks her.

Mina retreats her head and nods her head, “I get scared easily,“ she admits and gets up.

“Where are you going?” I ask, standing up from my spot.

“The bathroom,” she replies in a soft tone and I move up to her, grabbing her forearm. The guys have paused the video briefly to observe us.

“Follow me,” I say before pulling her with me to the bathroom.

“Are you okay? We can go home if you want to,” I say quickly as soon as I see her exit the bathroom. She grimaces.

“It’s fine.”

“We can go. It’ll be fine. We don’t have to stay.”

“I said it’s alright, Jinyoung. And I’m sure Mark wouldn’t like us leaving like this in the middle of the movie night. It’s just a movie. I can handle it.” Her tone is almost aggravated and I frown.

“Okay whatever you say.” I shrug and follow after her back to the living room.

“Noona~ Hurry up. Mark hyung didn’t let us continue until you came back,” Yugyeom whines childishly and I notice Mina smiling at Mark.

“Well…I’m back now.”

I am coming downstairs when I notice Mina standing by the front door, all dolled up. My brow raises in curiosity.

“Are you going somewhere, Mina?” I ask in a quiet tone as I make my way towards her, she’s on her phone — texting someone with a big smile plastered on her face.

“Yes,” she replies distractedly.

“Where?”

“Shopping with Suzy.” She shrugs, eyes still on the phone. I’m kind of irritated by the fact that she isn’t paying full attention to me but I remind myself not to be too greedy.

“Why didn’t you tell me? Let me go grab my jacket, we’ll go together—“ I haven’t even completed myself when Mina’s head jerks in my direction, her eyes wide open.

“No,” she says harshly and I flinch, narrowing my eyes at her. This is new. She never spoke to me with such a rude tone so why now?

“Why not?” I crease my brow. Mina rolls her eyes before speaking up, “You must remember the last time we went shopping.”

I purse my lips, “What about it?” I try to remember and get her hint but nothing special pops up except for…

“The time when some guy was harassing you?”

Mina exhales exasperatedly and her hand is on her forehead now, massaging her temples. “Yes that time, when you embarrassed me.”

“Embarrassed you—? Mina, I was defending you from that guy. What are you trying to say?”

“I know your intentions weren’t bad but look. It was a small incident and I could’ve easily shrugged it off but you had to make it a big deal by punching that guy. I can’t take you with me today in case you try and be a hero again,” She says as if everything was my fault.

Was I wrong by defending her? Did I commit a sin by trying to save her?

My throat feels dry as I stare at Mina with sadness filled in my eyes. I’m unable to say anything.

“How about you go out with the guys while I go shopping, hm? I don’t want to fight over this, kay? I’m going now. See you later.” She clearly doesn’t see the hurt in my eyes as she cups my face and leans to kiss my nose — I can’t help but feel like she’s treating me like a child.

I stay frozen to the ground as I see her leave, closing the door behind her and saying a small and forced, “Goodbye.”

I am roaming the quiet streets of Seoul in the night, looking for a gift for Mina’s upcoming birthday. I was on a trip to Hawaii and came back today but no one was home. She didn’t pick her phone up. It might be because I came a day earlier and Mina isn’t aware. I tried calling her but the mobile’s turned off. I decided that I should take this time until she gets back home or calls me back to look for her birthday present. So that’s what I am doing right now as I enter into a toy shop.

I remember Mina loving all things childish so I plan on buying her a big teddy bear or something similar. I walk down one of the aisles filled with different kinds of stuffed toys. My eyes stop at a doll with big blue eyes and rosy lips. She has curly brown hair and I smile to myself because she reminds me of Mina. She used to have a doll like this, taking it everywhere with her.

I reach out to pick it up.

“Aren’t you too old for this?” I hear someone say from behind so I turn around and find myself looking into a pair of dark chocolate eyes. My brow shots up and I squint my eyes at the name tag she is wearing.

“I don’t think you’re supposed to say that too your customers.” I hear her snort.

I give her a pointed look before placing it back. “I’m looking for a big white bear for my wife.” I grin at her and she brings her hand to her chin, tapping it.

“I swear I’ve seen it here around somewhere.” Is she being serious or is just kidding me? Does my face say it so clearly that I need cheering up. If that’s so, then why hasn’t anybody else noticed.

“Follow me,” She says with a sigh and we walk towards the last aisle and I find the perfect bear I’ve been looking for.

“I’ll buy this, Ms. HyoSung.”

Mina and I almost reach home at the same time, she’s getting out of someone’s car when I turn around the corner. I recognise the car as Mark’s. I immediately frown. Was she with him?

She gets out and then walks over to his side, Mark rolls the windows down and I can see him smiling at her. My grip on the teddy bear tightens and my heart aches as Mina leans down to kiss Mark’s nose. I stand there frozen as Mina walks back to the front door of our house and Mark’s car drives past me, he doesn’t even notice me.

I suddenly feel how cold the air is. I shiver and there’s a stinging pain in my chest. My hands clutches the coat I’m wearing and I feel I can’t breathe. It’s like the air has been knocked out of my lungs, it has left me empty.

“I saw you with Mark … yesterday …,” I manage to choke out over breakfast. I can’t even look straight into her eyes. It hurts. Everything hurts. It’s like I’m drowning. But like always, she’s unable to see my pain.

I know I’m the one at fault. Because I should’ve expected this. Heck, I did. But it still hurts. My breathing is shallow.

Upon hearing me, the glass from Mina’s hands slips and it falls on the floor, shattering into a million pieces just like my heart. She turns around slowly, her expression is mortified. I don’t want her to feel that way.

“I- Jinyoung! I—“ I swallow and stand up. Her eyes are wide and I know she’s scared.

“It’s okay, Mina,” I breathe out. Mina rushes towards me, circling her arms around me from behind.

“No no no…! It’s not like that Jinyoung! I swear there’s nothing between us!” There’s a pang in my heart as Mina starts sobbing.

I turn around, also wrapping my arms around her small shaking frame.

“I’m sorry Jinyoung! So sorry! I swear you’re the only one for me!” She buries her head in my chest, crying loudly.

My hands move under her chin and I lift her face up, trying to shush her. “I know I’m not.” I cast my gaze onto the ground, where the glass shreds are. I glanced back up at Mina whose eyes are red and swollen now. She’s looking up at with a pained expression.

What she did, does and will do doesn’t matter to me, I am willing to forgive anything. It doesn’t hurt, what hurts is the lie.

“Mina … don’t lie to me and please … don’t lie to yourself.”
